Principals Report

Milkin It for Chappy

Over 300 people from afar and local gathered on Saturday at the Cow Race that stops Maleny. After four successful years, the ‘Milkin It’ charity cow race is quickly becoming a major mark down event on the Sunshine Coast social calendar. All profits from the event are directed into the Maleny State School Chaplaincy program.

Racegoers enjoyed cheering on their cow as the 200 strong field made their way slowly out of the top paddock and along the dirt straight towards the creek causeway crossing finish line. Guests enjoyed relaxing with friends over a cold drink and meal, as well as taking part in fashions on the field (gumboots compulsory), most creative pair of gumboots, gumboot throwing and cow pat bingo.

Col Finley shone as the event MC and auctioneer introducing the crowd to celebrity McLeod’s Daughter’s heart throb Myles Pollard who played the part of Nick Ryan. Myles who himself originates from a country background was so impressed that he said he intends to bring his own social group of friends to next year’s event.

Congratulations to Chappy Becky and event coordinator Misty Bland for organising such a high standard event that is becoming part of Maleny’s culture and uniqueness. To all sponsors and attendees our school is extremely grateful for the benefits that this event provides to our children and local community. The venue is simply stunning and would not be possible without the generous support of Maleny Dairies of which we are incredibly grateful as well as the tremendous volunteering efforts of all supporters. If you didn’t attend, this is a great event to invite your friends from out of town and book a table for next year. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Parent Information on the Australian Curriculum

It is parents, families and carers who have the most influence on their children. When families are actively involved in their children’s education, children usually enjoy school and achieve better results.

The Australian Curriculum website provides information for families and carers about their children and the Australian Curriculum. The link is:

https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/parent-information/

The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.

Download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. There is also information about how schools can use the Australian Curriculum to support students' needs and interests, and links to further information.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Our Current Buzz Phrase

Our current focus rule is Be Safe and our School Buzz Phrase for Weeks 5 and 6 is “Walk or Sit.”

Students are encouraged to move safely around the school and in their classrooms. They are asked to consider what it means to be safe and the consequences of being safe/ unsafe.

Examples of this include:

  • I walk on concrete, for example (tuckshop, library, toilets, and playground)
  • I walk down stairs
  • I move safely around the school
  • I walk in my classroom and between classrooms

We are always working towards keeping our school a safe place for everyone.

PBL Team

Year 4 A, B & C

Terrific Term 1 … Halfway there!

4A, 4B and 4C have experienced a wonderful although fast-paced beginning to this year. We have dived head-first into the nasty, despicable world of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’. We have been investigating the special language feature, such as the noun groups, that are used and how they help develop the horrible characters that are Mr and Mrs Twit! We have just begun writing our own gross chapters that we are looking forward to publishing.

In Science we have been investigating the natural processes of Weathering and Erosion. This has involved examining the rocks and soil of our surrounding local area. We have absolutely LOVED the support and sharing of our own rock collections in the classroom! The recent cyclone and major flooding throughout Queensland have allowed us to apply our knowledge to the large-scale problems that people and animals in our state are now facing.

Terrific Term 1 … What we’re looking forward to ...

We have been so excited practising our singing in preparation for our Harmony Day performance at the local Community Centre. And lastly some of our talented year 4’s have been selected in the Softball teams to represent our school at Friday Inter-school sport. We are so proud and wish them the best of luck in week 6 and 8!

Tam Johnston, Caroline Hartley, Trish Mckay, Lou Walsh and Kylie Hulm

Year 5A & 5B

So far this year...

5A and 5B have been busy since the start of the year reading “The Forests of Silence- Deltora Quest” novel by Emily Rodda. We have been looking at the precise language used and are now working on analysing one of the characters from the story and how they are portrayed by the author. After that we will start writing our own quest stories.

In Science we have been investigating animals and their structural and behavioural adaptations for survival. Soon we will start creating our own creatures to survive in two different environments. We will use powerpoint to present this information.

Friday Morning Session is always a highlight in Year 5 and both 5A and 5B have started the year in style. We have had some delicious cooking and informative interest talks with many more still to come.

We’re looking forward to....

In the coming weeks we have a number of new and exciting things happening like Maths and Writing GEMS, Interschool sport, the Cross Country and we will also start our art sculptures of our own heroes and villains.
