Some of the things Chappy Becky does at Maleny State School:

  • Breakfast Club
  • Mentoring students along with wonderful volunteers from our Community
  • Supports families & friends that need a little extra help
  • Runs a fabulous program for the Year 6 Girls called “SHINE”
  • Lots of fun lunchtime games for all year levels
  • Hosts a regular Grandparents catch up
  • And so much more for all the Students & Staff at our School

"As a Chaplain for almost 7 years now I still have people who are unsure about what a Chaplain is and what I specifically do at Maleny SS. After having a discussion with a parent in the school, I requested that they write a list of questions that the typical parent would like to ask me. This interview is the culmination of those questions. I have answered honestly and openly about who I am and what my role is and my hope is to clarify any misunderstandings or preconceived ideas that people may have about school Chaplaincy."

Chappy Becky does an amazing job at our school and has a positive impact every day, especially to the social and emotional wellbeing of our students, parents, grandparents, staff and community. The school Mentoring program coordinated by Chappy Becky was highlighted in our recent school review as an incredibly effective program that positively adds to our supportive school culture. Chappy works 3 days a week at our school but is only funded for 2 days. Donations are always welcome to assist her extra day at our school. Contact the office if you are in a position to donate, every little bit counts.

Learning Vocabulary, no matter what age is a vital component of every child’s development

Learning vocabulary is a continual process of language and literacy development, which begins in the early years of life, and continues through schooling and beyond.

Knowledge of vocabulary meanings affects children’s abilities to understand and use words appropriately during the language acts of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

It is crucial that children have rich, implicit and explicit opportunities to learn new, and more advanced vocabulary.

Vocabulary knowledge influences the complexities and nuances of children’s thinking … and how well they will understand printed texts. Having more complex language allows children to make meaning from what people say, and engage with new concepts. These are relevant for early numeracy, science, and literacy (and other disciplinary) knowledge, as well as for equipping children to share their own thoughts and feelings.

According to the latest brain-research principles, children’s cognitive and language development is maximised when they are provided with meaningful opportunities to engage in independent and shared discussions, and exposed to many different forms of text that are appropriate to their world.

Research shows that when young children have meaningful interactions and are exposed to lots of words, they quickly develop wider vocabularies. The landmark research by Hart and Risley (1995) revealed the importance of interacting with children and exposing them to a high quantity and quality of language learning experiences. They also demonstrated that having more advanced vocabularies in the early years led to greater educational achievement in the middle years of primary school (Hart and Risley, 1995). Later research has echoed this importance of adult interaction for children’s vocabulary and general oral language development.

Innovation Centre News

Scholastic Book Fair Monday 14th - 16th June

After a 1-year hiatus the Maleny State School Scholastic Book Fair is on once again. This is a major fund raiser for our Innovation Centre Library. Every purchase made by our school community puts dollars in our virtual bank to spend on new books for our school. Every year we have been able to add piles of books onto our library shelves.

How does it work?

  • On Monday 14th June, children will do a brief walk through the Book Fair with their class and write down up to 5 books on a wish list. These lists will have the book details and cost of the book they are interested in. On the back of the wish list form are the online payment details.
  • Parents can make the payments online for the books they wish to purchase (just because it is on the list, it doesn’t mean you must buy it ).
  • Write the payment confirmation information (receipt number) and how much was paid onto the wish list and return it with your child to school the next day. Children can come in during the open hours and collect the books that you have paid for. If we run out of a specific title of a particular book, these are placed on back-order and usually arrive with in the week.
  • •There will also be opening hours where parents/ community can come in and purchase books. Check out the times below.
  • NB: we will NOT be accepting cash purchases. Online or EFTPOS card transactions (Debit or Credit) only will be available at the Book Fair.

Book Fair schedule:

  • Monday 14th June -
    - 9:00am – 2:50pm Student walk throughs and wish list creation.
    - 2:50pm – 4:00pm Open for parent purchasing (EFTPOS card transactions only)
  • Tuesday 15th June -
    - 8:15am – 10:00am Open for parent purchases or students wishing to bring on online payment slips to collect their books.
    - 2:50pm – 4:00pm Open for parent purchasing (EFTPOS card transactions only)
  • Wednesday 16th June - (Under 8’s Day)
    - 8:15am – 10:30am Open for parent purchases or students wishing to bring on online payment slips to collect their books.

So come along to check out some great books and help the school get some new books in the process!

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

I choose to Defuse

This fortnight’s new BUZZ phrase is a BE SAFE rule, “I choose to Defuse”.

For our students, this means:

  • I say STOP if someone or something is upsetting me.
  • I WALK away from the situation to a safe place.
  • I TALK to someone I can trust.
  • I CONTROL myself and keep my COOL.
  • I can solve problems in a calm manner

How to help

Across the school we help students think about:

  • What is a peaceful resolution?
  • Providing students with strategies to use when faced with a social/emotional problem. (Count backwards, breathing, have a drink, go for a walk)
  • What happens if I don’t keep my cool! What does it look like? Is it appropriate? How does it affect others? Would others’ think it is COOL?
  • Discuss the STOP, THINK, DO process.
  • Every ACTION has a REACTION and only individuals can control their own Actions.

You can also help at home by choosing a calm time to discuss these strategies with your child.

Our Material World

We have been very busy investigating materials and their properties in preparation for our Science Assessment Task – Making a garden ornament.

The Preps have been exploring the materials in our playground and thinking about why they are suitable to be outside.

We had lots of fun testing a variety of hats to see if they were waterproof or not.

We’ve enjoyed reading the story of The Three Little Pigs and discussing the different materials the pigs used to build their houses. We thought about the materials that our own houses are made from, then built houses in preparation for a visit from the Big Bad Wolf.

We also made kites from a range of materials and flew them to see how strong they were in the wind.

Science – Chickens Hatching

Students continue to investigate Life and Living. 1 x chicken was pipping in 1A and we are still waiting (and hoping) for chickens to hatch in 1B. From there students will investigate what happens to living things if disasters to environments occur and how changes to environments occur. Students are very excited at the prospect of chickens in the classroom.

Year 2

We have had a wonderful few weeks of learning. We have been sharing some traditional and not so traditional fairytales and comparing characters. Math has been all about Number, Time and Shape. We are looking forward to testing our Recycled Toys next week as well. Great work Year 2.

Greetings from 3A & 3B

As we write this newsletter we are congratulating our students on their wonderful effort to complete NAPLAN. The children approached their NAPLAN tests with a positive attitude and showed great persistence to complete each of the four tasks. They can all be very proud of their efforts. Now it is time to settle back into a normal timetable and school routine. We have started some of our Assessment tasks for Term 2. Reports will be available at the end of this term. To bring balance during this hectic term we are encouraging our students to participate in some physical activity each day and will introduce them to some games from the past such as skipping and hopscotch. We welcome skipping ropes during this cooler season. It also encourages students to play as a team promoting social skills.t

GROWTH

As a person who works with children and people in general, I take great delight in seeing personal growth. I am constantly challenged in my own life, to be reflective and honest about areas that I know I need to grow in. A program that I have just finished doing with students at my other schools, involved implementing values through active based learning. One of the lessons involved teaching students about the importance of being non-judgemental and the significance of equal opportunities for EVERY one. The Yr 6’s were asked to read some scenarios and decide as a group whether the student in their scenario could go on camp. My role was to drip feed them information regarding the fictitious student, and based on their information they decided ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ and gave their reasons. As more information was given, it created a bigger picture of what was happening in the person’s life. As they made their decisions, some of the year 6’s admitted that they felt uncomfortable being in a position of power and eventually they all recognised that they never really knew what was going on in a person’s life and that every student should be given the same opportunities. It was a powerful life lesson. At the conclusion of the session I put about 50 values cards on the ground. Each person had to pick 2 values each that they could see they had grown in over the duration of the 10 weeks. They also had to choose 1 value that they knew they still needed to focus on. Each student acknowledged values such as INTEGRITY, FORGIVENESS, TOLERENCE, PATIENCE and SELF-CONTROL.
