Principals Report

Outstanding Term One

Thank you for your support and contributing to the smoothest first Term I can remember. There is a real positive buzz around our district of what a supportive and successful school we have. This is something that we can all be proud of and it is important to reflect on and celebrate. Our attendance rate is sitting at just under 94%, which we hope we can sustain with great attendance at school every day this week.

Farewell Mr Flamank

This week on our Tuesday assembly we will celebrate Eric Flamank’s distinguished teaching career which has spanned over 43 years with the Department of Education in a number of roles. These roll include teaching in Special Education and Learning Support, Classroom Teacher, Deputy Principal and Principal.

We have been privileged at Maleny State School to have Mr Flamank’s as a key member of our teaching and leadership team for the last 7 years. Eric’s distinguished career included teaching posts including Calliope, Principal of Pasha (130km East of Clermont), Bereserker, Maleny SHS and Mountain Creek before joining us at Maleny State School. We thank Eric for his friendship, professionalism, caring nature, love of children and passion for teaching. Students will very much miss Mr Flamank’s supportive approach to teaching and warm personality.

Eric has been instrumental as our Learning Support teacher and coordinator of our volunteers within the school for many years. Thankfully, Eric has already returned to our school as a volunteer himself after retiring officially at the beginning of this year.

I, along with all other staff at Maleny, will miss Mr Flamank dearly not only as a truly professional colleague but also for his positive vibe, sense of fun and friendship. We wish Eric all the best in retirement and thank him for the many years of dedicated service to our community. Eric is so highly respected that a poster in our Enrichment Centre reads, “Try to be a bit more like Eric every day.” Congratulations Eric on a magnificent Career.

P&C Obi Open Golf Day

This was a fantastic inaugural fundraising event held on Saturday afternoon. A big thank you to John and Fiona who coordinated this event along with tremendous support from a number of P&C members. Well done to all parents and community members that participated in the day. It was my first game in 15 years, which was obvious to my supportive teammates. Amazingly one lucky shot and I walked away with a tremendous prize for nearest to the pin. Proves anyone can play in this event and have a great day. Keep your eye out for next year’s event. A special thank you to our sponsors Maleny Hotel, Maleny & Hinterland Real Estate, Purple Palate, Brouhaha and Newstead Brewery.

Knitfest Donations of Felt / Wool Required

This year our students will be decorating our front fence for Knitfest (last weekend in June) and we will require quite a lot of felt and wool. It will be an Australiana theme so all colours will be required.

If you see some cheap felt/wool or have some that you don’t require please drop it in to the office. If you would like to help we would be very appreciative even if it is attaching complete items on to the hessian. Many hands make light work.

Harmony Day Town Performance

This magnificent community event last Thursday morning brought together our three local schools (Maleny State School, River School and Independent School) who came together as one in harmony and presented reflections on what Harmony Day means. Students performed three songs and an expressive dance. The energy, beliefs and enthusiasm shown by student’s performances was outstanding and brought the Community Hall to life. Lou Walsh (Year 4 teacher) once again has done an outstanding job to coordinate this annual event that just keeps getting better each year. A huge thank you to all our staff (Lou Walsh, Tammalee Johnston, Carolyn Hartley and Kylie Hulm – Year 4 teachers) and parents (Will Audley, Max Sportelli, Tim, John Mays and other River School staff and parents) who prepared students beautifully. The event was held in the Community Hall (A huge thank you to the Community Hall for allowing this to occur).

Keeping our school safe

Please keep an eye on our school over the holidays and report any suspicious activity that you may notice as unusual. It is a credit to our community that we thankfully have not experienced any of the vandalism etc. that many other schools do struggle with. This being said we realise that we must all continue to be observant and play our part collectively to ensure that this continues. A big bonus for us is that parents do not allow their children to come to the school over the weekend/ holiday period and know where children are at all times. Our local police also do a wonderful job and regularly patrol our school out of hours. I very much appreciate their continued efforts.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday. I look forward to catching up in Term Two.

School Resumes on Tuesday 23 April. (Monday is Easter Monday)

Have a Great Easter Break

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Our school's current 4Be focus is:

Buzz Phrase

Our School Buzz Phrase for the last two weeks of term is “Quiet Talking, Quiet Eating.” Students are encouraged to be respectful in the eating areas and at the tuckshop. They need to speak considerately and politely to those around them, keep eating areas clean and tidy and wait for teacher directions to line up quietly.

News from the 4’s

The students from Year 4 sang from their heart for our Harmony Day Performance at the Community Centre last Thursday. The audience were captivated with not only how well they sang but also with the message the students wanted to share. Molly, Eli and Diya delivered a speech to the audience explaining the meaning of Harmony Day. Diya stated, “Harmony Day is celebrated all over Australia and this day is special because we recognise our differences, our similarities, and the need for peace.” The Year 4 teachers and Mr Byrne were so impressed and very proud of the united group of students from Maleny, The River School and The Independent School.

In English, we have been investigating poetry and different poetic devices used to entertain readers. We have started looking at Puns, Spoonerisms, Alliteration and Limericks.

In Science, we have completed many hands-on activities on weathering and erosion. In our science assessment task, we investigate soil erosion and looked at how natural processes and human activity can cause changes to the Earth's surface.

Some of the students from Year 4 were lucky to have no homework, sit with a friend for a day, extra game time or even enjoyed a Posh Picnic for their Be Super Award.

In Hass, we have been learning about Early Explorers and the impact their arrival had on different countries. This week the 4’s have been looking at Captain James Cook and his discovery of the East Coast of Australia. The students have selected to role-play different people of that time, like Captain James Cook, a crewmember on the Endeavour or an Indigenous person that lived in our country. They have spoken to members of the jury to express their perspective on what actually happened.

Science Create A Creature Assessment

Students have completed their Science assessment for the term. This assessment required students to create new creatures with various behavioural and structural adaptations. These adaptations then enabled the creatures to survive in their own particular environments. Students then completed a PowerPoint detailing facts about their newly discovered creatures.

Hero or Villain- Art Assessment

Students have been busy creating their own 3D sculptures of villains and heroes for Semester 1 Assessment in The Visual Arts. First students designed their own character, taking into consideration artistic elements like colour, texture, shape and size as well as investigating existing symbols which make heroes and villains recognisable. The final step was to bring these designs into a sculptural form. This was a perfect activity for wet weather afternoons.

Here are a few that are almost finished.

GRATITUDE

This week I have been completely amazed at the generosity in our school community. Last newsletter I put a shout out for any families who could help donate some fresh fruit and vegetables for people in need. I have been so touched by the parents who have approached me wanting to help meet me fulfil this need. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The power in coming together to help is so wonderful.

Many still don’t understand the role of a chaplain, (and it is so varied from day to day) but one of the key areas that is part of my job description is being a practical support for families and children in this school. To do this effectively I need your help. I am one person who can co-ordinate and solve problems that a family may have and this is why I am so full of gratitude to the help I have received this week. I hope that as the year goes by we can come together and make this school an even more positive place, a place where people feel cared for and valued. None of us are exempt from facing hardship of some kind or another, so I urge you also to reach out and be that person who is pro-active in helping solve problems. Have a great week.

HOW YOU CAN HELP…

Spreads (Vegemite, jam, cream cheese), Milo and butter needed for Wednesday morning Breakfast Club. Please see Chappy for more information.

Mentors Needed. If you have a spare hour a week and love spending one on one time with a child this might be the thing for you. Please see me for more details.
