Harmony and Anti Bullying National Day of Action Free Dress $1 donation – Friday, 16 March 2018
These two events fit beautifully together and as a school we will celebrate them both this Friday. All classes will be participating in a number of activities over the next two weeks to promote respectful relationships, build resilience and develop strategies to deal with bullying.
We ask students to wear bright colours as free dress (sun safe) this Friday to support our anti bullying and harmony day message. Gold coin donations will go to Welcome2Maleny which is a local group that supports refugees on the Sunshine Coast. Welcome2Maleny donates stationary, school uniforms and school supplies to refugee students living on the Sunshine Coast.
We will hold a special assembly on Friday morning at 9:00 on the 16 March to share our schools strong stance on Anti Bullying. All classes will be participating in special activities over the next couple of weeks to ensure our children are clear on what bullying is and how harmful it can be as well as developing skills to assist them in reacting appropriately if they are bullied.
Harmony Day Celebrations
Wednesday, 21 March is Harmony Day. As part of our Harmony Day celebrations this year all of our Yr 3 classes will unite with the Ananda Marga River School and the Maleny State High School to perform songs in the Maleny Township at 9:15 (in the middle of town between real estate and Peace of Green).
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.
Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live.
The Day is held every year on 21 March and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
School Photos (Ensure shoes are black and socks are white)
School Photos will be on Thursday, 22 March please ensure students are at school on time and have full and correct formal uniform on this day, not sports shirts. Note: all Sports captains will need to wear formal uniform for initial class photo and bring sports house shirt to change into for special House Captains photo.
Disco - Harmony Theme, Wear – Bright Colours Thursday 22 March
Prep – Yr 3 - 5:00 - 6:15 (For Safety - Parents must collect students from inside the Hall, 15 minute change over. All P-3 students must go home and not stay for the Senior Disco. Little ones that have stayed in the past become stressed, sometimes hurt and require one on one adult supervision).
Yr 4 – Yr 6 - 6:30 – 8:00 (Students are to be collected from inside the hall on time, late pickups will be called and politely reminded to collect as we are often waiting for parents that have pick up times wrong)
Cost: $4.00
Parents support is required in the Tuckshop at both Discos. Please just walk in to the tuckshop, introduce yourself and you will quickly learn how to serve or prepare food.
AGM P&C Meeting Wednesday, 14 March @ 6:30pm
New members welcome - all Executive Positions are declared vacant each year.
We would love to see many more faces come along to meetings to ensure our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.
Milkin It for Chappy
This event was bigger and better than ever before and was most enjoyable for the hundreds of people that attended. Congratulations to Chappy Becky and event coordinator Misty Bland for organising such a high standard event that is becoming part of Maleny culture and uniqueness. The site of the event is simply stunning and wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of the Maleny Dairies of which we are incredibly grateful. If you didn’t attend, this is a great event to invite your friends from out of town and book a table for next year. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.
Have a Great Week

Bullying No Way Day of Action!
On Friday 16 March 2018, Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA).
The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.
We at Maleny State School believe strongly in putting a stop to bullying that classes will be use the week leading up to the ‘National Day of Action’ to highlight the anti-bullying message. Classes will be taking part in a number of activities within their class and displaying their culminating activity in their classrooms as a reminder of the anti-bullying messages that have been discussed over the week.
Increased Police Monitoring!
The local Police will be increasing patrols over the next couple of weeks. Please make sure that you are:
- Using the pedestrian crossing
- Walking bikes, scooters, skateboards on footpaths
- Not parking in Bus Zones
Students have also been advised about:
- Student behaviour out in public to and from school eg. at the park, in local shops and bus travel code of conduct
Every Day Counts – School Attendance
We remind parents of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.
Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year.
More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at
http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/index.html

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)
Students have been working hard this term to follow our School 4 Be Rules and achieve rewards through the Be Super, Be Awesome and Be Epic Clubs. They have been keeping record of their achievements on a 4 Be Tracking sheet by trading 4 Be cards for stamps. Those students who have achieved the Be Super Club (10 stamps) will receive a classroom reward. Students who have achieved the Be Awesome Club (20 stamps) will be invited to attend a games session on the oval. Be Epic students (30 stamps) will be rewarded with a free swim. When Be Clubs have been finalised, a note will be sent home to Be Epic Club members with more information. Term 1 rewards day for the Be Awesome and Be Epic students is Thursday 29 March.
Fortnightly Buzz Phrases
Our current focus rule is a Be Respectful Rule - "Say No to Bullying" to link in with the National Day of Action against bullying. Classes will be discussing a number of issues around this topic in their class activities.
Our Buzz phrase for the last two weeks of term is " Quiet Talking, Quiet Eating". Students are encouraged to be respectful in the eating areas and tuckshop. They need to speak considerately and politely to those around them, keep eating areas clean and tidy and wait for teacher directions to line up quietly.
Prep A & B
Mrs Price, our Engagement and Well-being Teacher had her final visit to Prep for circle time. She talked to the children about the ways we interact with others. We learnt that most of us are similar to dolphins most of the time. Dolphins choose to play fair, use their manners and take care of others. They stay in control of themselves.
Sometimes even dolphins can act like sharks. They may forget to use their friendly words and faces or they may forget to keep their hands and feet to themselves. Sharks hurt others with their words or actions. Sharks may lose control of themselves.
Jellyfish keep their feelings to themselves instead of talking about them. Jellyfish may give into others when they don’t want to and they may cry or sulk without trying to deal with the problem themselves first.
At Maleny State School we encourage students to be dolphins and solve their problems using the High 5 Poster. It would be great if you could support your children with using this language at home.

Year 1A & 1B
Year 1's have been learning about the needs of living things in Science this term. To consolidate our learning, both classes have chicken eggs in an incubator and we have been anxiously counting down the days on our calendars until they hatch. Once hatched, our Scientists can delve deeper into the basic needs of living things. The eggs are due to hatch today, Monday, so hopefully there will be a lot of excited students this week and I know that cute baby chickens will provide lots of stimulus material for our daily writing as well!
Jo Dykes and Tammalee Johnston
Year 1/2C
It is hard to believe that we are in Week 8 of our first 10 week term for the year. Time does fly when you are having fun and this has been the case in 1/2C. Over the past few weeks we have been learning a lot. Science is one of the areas in which the children have excelled this term. In this unit, students have identified that living things have basic needs, including food and water, and have a variety of external features. We have researched how living things change as they grow and we now understand that the needs of living things are met in the different places in which they live and we will be suggesting actions to improve the health of a habitat for living things. We have enjoyed creating our dioramas and researching the habitats, life cycles and the impact of environmental change on habitats and wildlife existence.
In English we have enjoyed extending and challenging ourselves with our writing. Making sure our stories have Sizzling Starts – often achieved by using a sound effect, such as bang, boom or crash to entice the reader. In Maths we have been looking at skip counting (counting by 2's, 5's & 10's), investigating length, addition, subtraction and sorting to name just a few of the concepts we have worked on this term. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter break. I look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for some major learning in Term 2!
Jenny Jenkinson
Year 2A & 2B
We have finished our Poetry unit and now investigating stories and characters in stories for unit 2. The children are all enjoying swimming and we have started computer lab where each class visits every fortnight to learn computer skills. Soon we will be starting to design and make our lunchbox in science so please keep those recycled materials coming in.
Sarsha Anthony, Jean Penny & Libby Ferguson
Year 3A, 3B & 3C
In English we have been busy working on the assessment pieces for our unit on Persuasive Texts. We have been most impressed at how the children are trying to use high modality words, exaggeration, rhetorical questions, evaluative adjectives and facts to make their writing more persuasive. All of these are very new writing techniques for the year threes to try but work in well with our Seven Steps Writing Strategies especially that of Sizzling Starts and Show Don’t Tell.
In Science we have been exploring characteristics of living things. We are currently undertaking an investigation called; “Is a seed living?” The children are making careful observations and watering their mung bean seeds every day. Lots of excitement and learning as the children see their seeds sprouting.
All the year three classes have been learning three songs for Harmony Day which they will sing along with all the other schools in the middle of Maleny at the vacant block between Maleny Realty and Peace of Green. So put the 21st March in your diary to come and show your support. More about Harmony Day will be in this month’s Hinterland Times.

Innovation Centre News
As always it is busy in the Innovation Centre. It has been very popular during lunch breaks with most spots filled with kids engaging in all sorts of activities.
Cozmo
Cozmo is a very cute little robot that has heaps of heaps of emotional traits that can be seen by his programmed actions and very expressive cartoon face. Not only can you play games with Cozmo but you have to look after him by feeding and tuning him. You can even get right into coding with a version of ScratchJr developed for the Cozmo robot to allow the user to control the little guy and get it to do all sorts of activities. The Youtube playlist below showcases Cozmo.

GEMS (STEM) RoboClub started in Week 6
The robotics club kicked off in Week 6. Eight students in all across years 5 & 6 started their sessions. Beginning with Club aims, program overview, discussions on teamwork and collaboration as well as the first upcoming challenge of the RoboSumo comp made up the first session. Held each Thursday afternoon the students will slowly develop some serious design and coding skills as they look to overcome some challenges with their team mates. Will they get everything right the first time? Absolutely NOT! The design process is filled with failure and is expected. It is how they will learn and the refine designs to get the best robots or solutions they can. Children will think of creative ideas, plan these out and implement/ build/ code the designs. Lastly, they'll see how they went and see how it can be improved again, starting the cycle once more. Later this year when the final allocation of a Robotics and Coding grant comes in an additional kit of 4 robots will allow for another 8 students to be invited into the program.
Finally, a big thankyou to Mandy McMahon and Kylie McAuliffe for stepping so capably in a replacing Shelley whilst she is on long service leave for the next few weeks.

Chappy News – Gratefulness & Thankfulness
As a parent, one of the biggest priorities I have is teaching my children to be thankful for EVERYTHING and to focus on the things that they actually have instead of what they DON’T have. I have felt so happy as I’ve listened to them, because I am passionate about raising children who are able to see the good things in their own lives and be grateful for what they have. As a parent it is so vital that we teach our children what it means to be thankful; that we teach them to see what they have and acknowledge it as a blessing. It is also vital that I show my children how to look out for the needs of others and be pro-active in helping wherever it is possible. If we as parents cannot see the good in our own lives, how can we expect to teach our children how to recognise it in theirs? Food for thought.
I want to say a big thank you to all the people who came and supported the chaplaincy fundraiser, “Maleny’s Milkin’ It For Charity” on Saturday, 3 March. The day was a great success, with about 250 or more people attending in all their finest gowns and gumboots. We had an overwhelming amount of support from our local businesses and so many prizes were won in the raffle and auction. Overall, about $15,000 was raised to keep supporting my role at Maleny State School. Thank you!

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia
The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has been a keen contributor to this program for many years.
Every year, Recycle 4 Sight Australia collects thousands of pairs of used spectacles and sunglasses. The program distributes regraded spectacles to many parts of the world for distribution to poor people in need.
Lions Clubs have provided a collection box for your school, and would appreciate the support of residents in donating glasses no longer needed – for “a second life” in Africa, Europe, Middle East, and other countries in need.
Over the 15 years that the Australian program has existed, the program has delivered 2.5 million pairs of glasses.
We would appreciate donations of your unneeded glasses by taking them to the Lions box at the admin office. Thank you!
