Regular School Attendance
Did you know? Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.
Why is regular attendance at school important?
Regular school attendance will mean that your child gets a better chance at life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day:
- they learn better
- they make friends
- they are happier
- they have a brighter future
Having problems getting your child to school for some of these reasons?
- won’t get out of bed in the morning
- won’t go to bed at night
- can’t find their uniform, books, school bag …
- slow to eat breakfast
- haven’t done their homework
- watching TV or playing on devices
- have a test or presentation to do, have an assignment to hand in
- it’s their birthday.
A set routine can help
- have a set time to go to bed
- have a set time to get out of bed
- have uniform and school bag ready the night before
- have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- set a time for daily homework activities
- speak about school positively
- be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term!
What should I do if my child won’t go to school?
You should contact the school as soon as possible for advice and support.
Have a great week
Paula

PBL Team
Lost Property
There are many jumpers in lost property without names. Please ask your children to have a look in Lost Property, which is in the alcove next to the Yr 4 eating area. It’s a great time to check that jumpers and track pants are named, that way they can be returned to their owners.

Writing our Traditional Stories to Read to the Preppies
Both year four classes have been busy planning and writing their traditional stories with a message to share with the Prep classes. The purpose of writing the traditional story is to entertain and to deliver a message to the audience. We have read many different stories including Dreaming stories to help us identify the moral and focus on how the personality traits are revealed by the different characters. The students are using the Learning Wall to assist them with ideas, specific language features and vocabulary to help polish their stories. It has been wonderful to observe the students referring to the set criteria and identifying how they can incorporate more detail to create a better picture for the reader.
For Science the children have all chosen a local endangered or vulnerable animal to study. The animals selected have included the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, PInk Underwing Moth, platypus, koala, Marbled Frogmouth, Giant Barred Frog, Maleny Spiny Crayfish and the Spotted Tailed Quoll. They are studying how the relationships of living things impact on an animal's life cycle and what can be done to assist their chosen species survival.

Media Arts
The students have been presenting their PowerPoints on our school rainforest to their peers and receiving feedback on whether they have used persuasive techniques to promote this very beautiful place.
HASS
4B has been investigating the impact of the Industrial Revolution in England before colonisation to New Holland. 4A has been interviewing different people to find out about the groups people belong to. They have had to collect information and then summarise what they have learnt about the person.

Disaster Hits Maleny
Recently the Year 5 classes had a visit from the council as part of our HASS unit. We learned all about the 4 main disasters that impact the Sunshine Coast (Flooding, Storms/Cyclones, Bushfires and Heatwaves). Did you know that every household should have an Emergency Plan and an Emergency Kit? We all need to “GET READY” in case there is a disaster by cleaning out gutters, drains, ensuring that there’s no loose equipment around the house and having an emergency plan (where to go and what to take) and an emergency kit (first aid kit, tinned foods, valuables, water, torch, batteries, radio....). During an event we should all keep up-to-date with any important messages (text, radio, TV) and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. After an event we should always check on our family, friends and neighbours and then help with the clean up if it’s safe to do so.

War on Waste
WOW, What a Great Surprise
I’d like to thank Mrs Mackay, Imogen our Sustainability Captain and her wonderful family, Merrick, Julieann, Isobel, and Bella from Garden Club for giving up their own time in transforming the garden over the weekends while I was away. I appreciate all the time and effort shown by these very generous people. The garden has been tidied up and so many new plants have been donated and added to this very special place in our school. On my return to work, the Garden Club members were very proud to show me all the new additions including trellises, a huge potting table, hose heads and a new watering can which were kindly donated by the Ilett family. The plants are thriving especially after an overhaul of the compost bins and some added ingredients.

SHOW ENTRIES From Our Garden
We are very excited to be entering a variety of garden produce in the Maleny Show this year.

We received a number of first prizes for our Bok choy, silverbeet, lettuce and very odd vegetables!
Completing our New Compost Bins
The garden club members were extremely busy on Thursday and Friday adding our worms and all the ingredients to our three compost bins down near the chook pen. We will be using these bins as well as the ones in the garden area to add our food scraps from our lunch areas.

Many Thanks
Lou Walsh
Sustainability Update (includes Garden and Poultry Club)
The past few weeks in the garden have been focussed on getting ready for the Maleny Show and entries to the Farm Produce section. As Mrs Walsh says we were giving all the plants some love to encourage them.
Well it really paid off as our garden produce achieved the following awards:
- First – Bunch Silverbeet
- First – Two Heads of Lettuce
- First – Ugly Fruit or Vegetable (we really wanted to win this category!)
- First – Bunch of Bok Choy (we also won Reserve Champion for this and got a great big ribbon)
- Second – Collection of four or more Vegetables
- Third – Collection of four or more vegetables
Our large baskets of produce for the school garden section looked amazing. However, Peachester won this section. We have spoken to the judges and got some good tips for next year.
Thanks to Mrs Walsh and Mrs Mackay for helping get our entries ready and there!
The chickens from our Poultry Club also did really well. With all Firsts and Seconds. They were washed and blow dried by the Poultry Club members. They are on the school Facebook with pictures of us getting them ready if you want to have a look.
Thanks to Mrs D for coordinating and preparing the chickens.
Hope everyone enjoyed the show and got to see our entries.

Celebrating families
Was so lovely to see so many family members join us for our Families week afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago. Thank you for all that attended, was lovely to meet you and have a chat. We held this event to celebrate our school's families. Students created artworks to represent their families and these pieces were displayed in our wall of families in the hall. This display will stay in place until the end of term, so pop in and have a look at the artwork sometime. Parents and carers came and shared in some yummy afternoon tea and casual conversation. Thank you to the staff and community members that donated food for the event. Thank you also to Maleny IGA, Maleny Woolworths, Maleny Dairies, Maleny churches and Maleny and Hinterland Real Estate for their donations that made the event possible and enjoyable. Also thanks to my sister Chappy Vicki who was on loan from Mapleton State School for the day (actually it was her day off) for assisting. We were even able to gift some family fun bags with some little bits and pieces in them to spark some family interaction and family togetherness.
It is so nice to take some time to think about and be thankful for our families. National Families Week was a good opportunity to do just this. However, I am also reminded of the importance to make the most of our family time and look for the rays of sunshine daily. For some family interaction may be difficult, relationships may be strained or stressful. For those individuals friends may become family and so I encourage you to continue to invest time and energy in those friendships.
Chappy's quote for the week "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's lives" Richard Bach
