Principal’s Report
QParent Rollout – May ‘23
The rollout for QParents is going well with over 25% of all children now enabled after parents/carers registered for accounts going through the approval process. We are encouraging as many parents/carers as possible to sign up to access all of the activated services at Maleny State School (see included flyer below).
We will be starting the 2nd phase roll out of parents who are listed 2nd in our school systems. A number of parents listed 2nd have already requested access to QParents through invites. This roll out will go to all those listed 2nd who had not already requested access. This will provide all primary parents/ carers who are listed as ‘receive correspondence’ in our systems an invitation to sign up for QParents.
With various camps and excursions coming up along with the reporting period fast approaching, having access to QParents will help make it easy to:
- access report cards,
- pay invoices,
- notify the school of absences,
- provide consent permissions digitally (no lost notes)
- access the school calendar for upcoming events relevant to your children or the school as a whole.
Mr Greig will be in the Office on Friday afternoons between 2:30pm and 3:30pm to help with any QParents queries or help action parent approvals. Don’t hesitate to call or drop in to see him.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Commenced on Monday 8th May. The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge children and students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language, and additional languages, and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts.
Children and students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.
A consent form has been added to the state school reader record form in 2023. Read below for more information about consent and third party providers.
An information form, including the consent has been sent home. If this has been misplaced please contact your child’s class teacher or see Desley in the office to get another one.
Staff Meetings – every Monday from 3pm-4pm
Any team needs to have clear, actionable objectives in order to be successful. This is no different for staff in a school. Teachers are responsible for students across multiple subjects and areas of the curriculum so to support the learning needs of all children in our care it is important to have a set time each week, where all staff can come together to discuss the needs of our students and hear the same messages so that consistency and alignment in teaching, pedagogy and curriculum knowledge is achieved. Staff meetings are also used for staff training and professional development. At Maleny State School our Staff Meetings occur every Monday from 3pm-4pm, we ask that parents or carers don’t request a meeting with teachers during this time so all staff are available at these meetings.
This year during our Pupil Free Days and a number of our staff meetings, we have worked with leading educator Steve Francis, who developed the ‘Happy School’ program. Steve has assisted us in building highly effective teams; worked with us on time management and highlighted the importance of taking on coaching and feedback as an educator. If we can get all these things working well it will ultimately help our students.
Have a great week!

Prep A & Prep B
Our Material World
Our Science learning this term has been all about materials and their properties. We have been observing and experimenting with different materials to find out their suitability for being outdoors. We have been on a material walk in the playground, made kites, tested hats, played with sponges and water and are almost ready to choose materials to make our garden ornaments to hang outside in the Prep Area.
Retelling Stories
We’ve had lots of fun retelling our favourite Fairytales with puppets and props. We have been using a five finger retell to help us think about the setting, characters and events. The children are very good at telling what they like and don’t like about familiar stories and are working on making personal connections. For example, The Little Red Hen reminds me of eating fresh bread.

Year 2A & 2B
Full steam ahead
Year 2 students are well on their way to completing our final assessments for this semester. In English we are delving into the world of persuasion. Students will be writing some interesting reasons why the Big Bad Shark or a Big Bad Wolf should be their preferred character.
In Science we will be reporting on our Push Pull toy to look at the forces that help toys move. In Math we are looking at measuring time, money and number concepts. We are looking forward to our Under 8’s Day activities next Wednesday along with the National Simultaneous Storytime reading on the same day.
A friendly reminder to wear appropriate coloured jumpers now that the weather is cooling down as well as bringing a broad brimmed hat every day.
Below are some photos from 2A showing their fabulous Unit 1 Science Lunchboxes 😊

Chappy News
It’s Chappy Week!!
It’s National School Chaplaincy Week in Australia right now. I thought I would let you know a bit more about School Chaplains. They work as part of our School’s Support Team. They are a safe person for all students to connect with at school, providing a listening ear, caring presence and emotional or spiritual support. Chaplains are trained professionals, providing pastoral care for students struggling with personal or family issues, friendship difficulties, bullying, depression and more. Below is a little bit more about our Chaplain.
I became a chaplain because I love helping people of all ages. It’s true, I find joy and meaning in this type of role. As a person of faith I believe the gifts, talents and personality that my God has bestowed upon me has given me the right perspectives and abilities to suit this role. Before working in schools I was a social worker employed in the disability field. I have always been drawn to helping others and finding solutions even when out and about it my community.
Some of the things I do at school are running Breakfast and Lunch Clubs, coordinating the Mentor Program, helping in classrooms and individual student support. I am here at this school to support the students, staff and families when and where needed.
I work Wednesdays to Fridays. For Chappy Week I will be doing special lunch time activities on each of those days including craft activities, Chappy games and a mini disco. I will also be doing a pancake breakfast for Breakfast Club on Thursday morning.
If you have any questions about the Chaplaincy Service and the support we are able to provide to you or your children, or you’d just appreciate someone to chat to, please feel free to contact me, Chappy Chris on 54998333 or email cboug13@eq.edu.au . You can also find out more at the link below:
