A/Principal’s Report

A big welcome to our new families

Since the start of this term we have had a number of new enrolments. We welcome these families and students to Maleny State School.

Familiarisation with the new Australian Curriculum

This year, 2023 sees us at Maleny State School, beginning to familiarise ourselves with the updated version of the Australian Curriculum subjects of English and Maths. In Queensland there will be a gradual roll out of the different updated subject areas over a number of years.

The latest Australian Curriculum Review made improvements to the Foundation to Year 10 curriculum by refining, realigning and decluttering the content.

The Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0 is a more stripped-back and teachable curriculum that identifies the essential content our children should learn.

Overall, there’s a reduction in content, as well as better alignment between achievement standards and content descriptions, and improved links between learning areas and the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

Summary of key changes

  • the removal and reduction of content so the curriculum can be taught with depth and rigour, including a 21% reduction in the number of content descriptions, which describe what is to be taught and what students are expected to learn
  • a stronger focus on phonics in English
  • a stronger focus on students mastering the essential mathematical facts, skills, concepts and processes, and being introduced to these at the right time
  • making clear what mathematical computations need to be done without a calculator, reinforcing the importance of achieving proficiency in foundational skills
  • a revision of the sequencing of content in Mathematics; in particular, telling time, introduction of fractions, recall of multiplication facts (“times tables’) and solving equations
  • lifting standards for Mathematics in Year 1 in relation to addition and subtraction, with additional content setting expectations about recall and proficiency with multiplication facts, beginning in Year 2
  • prioritising Australian history within a global context in Years 9 and 10
  • deepening students’ understanding of First Nations Australian histories and cultures, the impact on - and perspectives of - First Nations Australians of the arrival of British settlers as well as their contribution to the building of modern Australia
  • strengthening and making explicit teaching about the origins and Christian and Western heritage of Australia's democracy, as well as about the diversity of Australian communities
  • strengthening the explicit teaching of consent and respectful relationships from F–10 in age-appropriate ways
  • addition of privacy and security in the Digital Technologies curriculum
  • strengthening the focus on students being physically active and increased content with a focus on activity in natural and outdoor settings.
  • strengthening the Foundation year by identifying the essential content to teach in the first year of school across all 8 learning areas.

The Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is also undertaking further work in the important area of mental health for young Australians. This will be reflected in later updates to the Health and Physical Education curriculum.

In 2008, all governments agreed a national curriculum was needed to deliver an equitable, quality education for all young Australians and the national curriculum was then developed over a number of years. The national curriculum is reviewed every 6 years and the 2020– 2021 review resulted in the Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0.

States and territories implement the Australian Curriculum according to their own timelines. Version 8.4 will remain available on the current Australian Curriculum website.

During the transition period over the next few years, both Version 8.4 and Version 9.0 will be available.

If you have any questions about the English and Maths Curriculum and your child’s progress in these areas, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Have a Magic week in Maleny.

How to view and make payments

You can view invoices with outstanding payments as well as details of paid invoices and receipts for your child on the payments screen within the individual student profile.

You can also make online payments against outstanding invoices with Visa or MasterCard. These payments are processed through the Commonwealth Bank's BPOINT facility. It is possible to make partial payments, or to pay multiple invoices for a student at the same time.

Click the ‘To Pay’ checkbox next to any invoice to make a payment.

Note: If you are viewing the payment screen within the combined student view (accessed through the Payments tile on your home screen), click on the student name which will navigate you to the individual student profile where you can make a payment.

Watch this video for an overview of the payments screen and making online payments in QParents.

Viewing upcoming events

You can view a list of upcoming events for your child through QParents.

The 'Upcoming Events' tile on your home screen provides you a snapshot of the number of upcoming events recorded for the students you have linked to your account. Click 'View all' to see the upcoming events. The upcoming events can also be filtered by event type, student, school and dates. NB Maleny State School only publishes Excursions and School Events.

Events are organised into four categories. These are:

Exams (E) – any exam dates upcoming for the student.
Assessments (A) – any dates where an assessment is due for the student.
Excursions (X) – any planned school excursions for the student.
School events (V) – any school events that involve the student. These may also include events such as upcoming public holidays.

To view events for a single student you can use the filters on this screen, or, when accessing the individual student profile events specific to that student will display.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

This Fortnight’s Rule:

Be a Learner

BUZZ Phrase:

I Can, I Will, I'll Have A Go!

Brainstorm and list your/school expectations.

I Can, I will, I’ll have a go!

  • Encourage children to take risks (in their learning)
  • Mistakes are ok (it is how we learn/improve)
  • Positive self-talk is essential, tell yourself “I Can Do This!”

Year 5A & 5B

Science- Our Place in Space

Students are currently researching facts about the Solar System using the QLearn platform and educational websites. Some interesting facts that we’ve discovered so far include:

  • The sun is a star and uses nuclear fusion
  • Mercury’s days are long (66 Earth days)
  • Jupiter’s storm is twice the size of Earth
  • Uranus is an ice giant that rotates backwards and on its side (and smells like rotten eggs).
  • Pluto is a dwarf planet because it doesn’t clear its surrounding path. It also has a heart shaped ice plain called “Tombaugh Regio”.

English- Let's Be Persuasive

In this unit, students are fine-tuning their persuasive skills to convince readers of a particular point of view. They will then write a feature magazine article for their assessment. The classes will be looking at different contexts for their assessments- Sharks in captivity vs sharks in the wild and Flying Foxes being relocated or left in their natural habitat.

From little things big things grow

I am currently replanting my veggie garden at home. The seeds and seedlings are so small and yet they can supply us with quite an abundance of produce. Makes me think about seeds that we can plant in our families, schools and community. At home we can plant seeds of kindness, love, hope, generosity and encouragement with our children that will grow to them feeling loved and passing this on to others. At school on a daily basis I see our teaching staff planting seeds of thought, challenge and investigation into our students. All these little seeds planted at home and at school can go a long way to helping our children grow in to adults who are wonderful functioning members of the community.

Our schools’ kindness club in conjunction with our student leadership team have decided to do something little that has the potential to grow to something quite substantial for our local community. They have decided to make the month May ‘Food Can Collection month’. CAN you help? We are asking school families to bring in cans of food that we will donate to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Suggestions are cans of lentils, tomatoes, vegetables, tuna and soup. It is a small thing added to your grocery trolley that can have a big impact on someone in our community that is going through a challenging time. Collection points for these cans will be in our year level eating areas. Please support this project and plant seeds of support.
