Term 2
Welcome back everyone, hopefully you all enjoyed a beautiful holiday with family. The weather was fantastic for taking part in outdoor pursuits.
Term 2 has started well and is always a busy, fun-filled term, with activities such as ‘Under 8’s Day’, ‘The Kids in Action Project’ and ‘Band Performances at the Maleny Show’ just to name a few. Students will be finishing off units off work and assessments prior to reports coming out in week 10 of this term. For the first time reports will not only be sent via email but parents who have signed up for QParents will be able to access reports via the app.
Term 2 will also bring some changes. I will be taking this Term off to care for my mum, Paula Heiniger our Deputy Principal will be taking on my role during this time. Supporting Paula, in the Deputy role will be Kate Stassen for weeks 1 & 2, Greg Corkin for weeks 3-6 and Greg Barry for weeks 7-10. Sonya Rutledge will be replacing Kate and Greg Barry; and Eric Faulkner will return to replace Greg Corkin.
I look forward to returning and catching up with you all in term 3.

Cross Country
Last week our annual Cross Country event was held. Well done to all the students who participated and who showed such great sportsmanship. Also thank you to Mr Turner for once again planning and facilitating such a wonderful event and thank you to all the staff and volunteers who assisted.
ANZAC Day
Thank you to the students and parents who attended the Maleny ANZAC Day march and/or Service. It was lovely to see our student’s marching with pride to honour the service and sacrifice of the original ANZACs and all the service men and women who have followed in their footsteps. Well done everyone!
Have a Great Week.

From the Deputy Principal
It’s Guidance Officer Week from 24 April to 5 May
This Guidance Officer Week Queensland State School’s celebrate 75 years of guidance support.
Guidance Officers contribute to the development of a comprehensive student support and wellbeing program, which is responsive to the needs of the school community.
Support provided by guidance officers includes advice and counselling on educational, behavioural, vocational, personal, social, family, and mental health and wellbeing issues.
Psychoeducational assessments also form an important part of the work GOs undertake to enhance positive educational outcomes and career pathways for all students.
In addition, GOs are able to provide training and support to staff in order to build their understanding and capability about how best to support students' mental health and wellbeing.
Guidance officers provide leadership, support and case management in responding to some of the most complex and challenging of circumstances, including student protection matters, critical incidents, mental health issues, and suicide prevention and postvention support.
Maleny State School’s Guidance Officer is Kirsty Brady, we thank her for her ongoing commitment to supporting the students, families and staff of our school community.
Paula Heiniger – Deputy Principal
Acknowledgement of Country
Incorporating Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country into meetings, gatherings, and events shows respect by upholding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols. If a Jinibara person is with us on these occasions at Maleny State School, they may like to provide a Welcome to Country and ask us to show respect for the Country on which we are meeting.
Our Cultural Captain Xanthie Abel has written some beautiful Acknowledgements of Country, that are personalised and specific to school occasions, for example:
We acknowledge the Jinibara people and the knowledge they have passed down through generations through stories, dance and culture. We thank Jinibara elders who have shared some of that knowledge with our school community. We are grateful for our school as a safe and beautiful place to learn and play.

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
QParents
QParents uptake has continued to increase. We have now past 20% of children at the school, whose parents are using the service to notify the school of absences, address/mailing change notifications and pay invoices in a quick and easy to manage method. It has made such a difference already to quickly updating absences in the office each morning. Saving parents and the school the costs and time spent making phone calls is another great time saver.
Parents seeing the app will also start to notice upcoming important dates/ events appear in the app for each child. It will include excursion dates (for each child) and when whole of school events are scheduled. It is a quick and easy way to check when events are on so you don’t forget.
Mr Greig will be at the office every Friday afternoon between 2:30pm and 3:30pm for any parents who want to ask any questions, request additional parents access to QParents and approve low-document ID approvals. Don’t hesitate to stop in at the front desk or call as ask to see/speak to Mr Greig.
A reminder invitation will go out to any parents who were sent email invites previously, that may have forgotten to sign up or may have completely missed the email. These will come out next week.
PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Respectful – Manners Matter
Welcome back everyone! It’s so great to see everyone after the Easter holidays and welcoming new students. We start the new Term off with a Be Respectful rule – Manners Matter.
This means we focus on:
- Using please, may I, thank you etc.
- Waiting (approximately 1m back) until adults have finished talking before interrupting.
- Let adults walk in front or go first through doorways or on paths.
- Pedestrian manners on footpath, keep to the left.
- Thanking parent helpers and volunteers in our school.
- Saying good morning/good afternoon to staff, adults and students when you pass in school grounds.
- Knock and wait before entering a classroom when on a message.
- Saying “Yes Mrs (or) Mr ……” not just yes.
- Displaying all these manners throughout the whole school including the office, tuckshop, playground, bus lines and on the bus.

Garden Club
The School Garden is looking magnificent. Mrs Lou Walsh, our garden guru, in on long service leave but the Ilett family, Julieann, Merrick, Imogen and Isobel have done a mighty job over the holidays weeding, watering, planting, fertilising and mulching. Thank you so much!! This week, Garden Club members have also done some more planting and mulching but better still they have done some harvesting of butter beans and corn. Nothing beats fresh produce.

Friendship
I recently joined a friend to watch the sunrise on the morning of her birthday; what a delight that was! She is a friend that I have had for over 25 years and I feel blessed to have her in my life. Friendships are so valuable. Friends can help us feel like we belong, boost our happiness and reduce our stress, and support us through problematic times. However, as adults we have come to understand that friendships are not perfect and that they go through their ups and downs. As adults we are more emotionally mature. We understand that our friends don’t always agree with us, like the same activities as us or have the same passions or viewpoints as us. We have our ways of thinking, reasoning and understanding that we have developed over time to help us enjoy friendships even when things go awry from time to time.
However how do we help our children navigate these friendship issues as they grow and mature through developmental stages? Firstly, as always with these types of issues we need to be available to listen to our children. Listen to their friendship stories and experiences both positive and not so positive. To start a conversation on friendship you may need to ask some open ended questions or share a story about when you were young and developing friendships. Parenting experts suggest rather than jumping in and trying to solve the issues straight up, to listen and prompt the child to try and find some solutions with minimal help from you (until needed of course). Thus, you are brainstorming the answers together.
If I can share one really good tip I have learnt over my years of working with children and also having my own is to talk with them about what we can control and what we can’t. We can control our own responses, our ways of treating others, however we can’t control what others are going to say or do most of the time. We can set a good example for others on friendship, that is display positive friendship skills but we can’t manipulate others to be the way we would like them to be in a friendship. We feel more comfortable and powerful operating in our own sphere and not getting overinvolved in others’ behavioural choices.
We as teaching and support staff here at school aim to encourage our students to have the balance between speaking up for others when required (like when bullying or risky situation is happening) but also allowing others to sort their own friendship issues. This helps to discourage the “us versus them” mentality that can develop within friendships groupings at school. Let’s help our children by continuing to teach them positive and pro-active friendship skills. If you would like a bit of a refresher on this some good places to start are the kids helpline or raising children websites.
