Principal’s Report

Country Fair

Thank you to everyone for supporting our Community Country Fair. It was a huge success! I would like to acknowledge the tireless work of our P&C, staff and volunteers for making this event possible. Thank you also to our many sponsors for their generous donations, their support is greatly appreciated and without them our Fair would not be the success that it was.

Please note: The above are the 2023 Attraction Sponsors (as at 24/03/2023):
All donated amounts over $1,000 were recognised as a ‘Major Sponsor’ of the Maleny Country Fair. Amounts above $2,500 were recognised as ‘'Partner Sponsors’ with logos taking priority in advertising.

ANZAC Day 2023 & Maleny State School’s ANZAC ceremony

ANZAC day is a day on which we commemorate the gallantry, bravery and sacrifice of our Service men and women in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations. In Term 2, ANZAC Day will be commemorated firstly at a school ceremony on Monday 24 April at 9:00am-9:30am in our school hall. Parents and carers are most welcome to attend.

As a school, we will also be marching as part of the Maleny ANZAC parade on Tuesday 25 April at 10:30am (the school will assemble as part of the march in Maple Street, near Cooke Park at 10:15am) and attend the RSL Maleny’s main service. Our School Captains and Vice-Captains will lay tributes at the cenotaph. As this day is a public holiday, it is not compulsory for students to attend, but we are encouraging as many students as possible to participate, by marching and/or attending the main service, to support and honour our Service men and women and march together under our school banner. Students who attend this day need to be dressed in full school uniform (including school hat).

This year our School Captains, Isabella and Archer, will be speaking at the Maleny Hospital Service at 9:45am on Tuesday 25 April.

Energy Drinks

Over the past few days we have had numerous reports of a drink product called PRIME being consumed and/or brought to school by some students. We have concerns regarding this drink and the impact it could have.

There is a warning label on the back of this product that clearly states the following:

‘Not suitable for children under 15 years of age, pregnant or lactating women: should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision”

We are encouraging parents to talk to their children and discourage them from purchasing it and other high energy drinks. Parental support in discouraging this drink being brought to school would be greatly appreciated.

Have a Magic week in Maleny.

Parent support is key to unlocking missing social skills in children

Working in a school, you get to see how changing times may affect children's social skills. It can also be tough for parents and carers to help their children manage big emotions, be kind, stay calm under pressure and get along with others.

That's where Triple P Online (Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®) can help.

You might have seen or heard information about the program on TV, radio or social media. The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has now made it simple and easy for all parents and carers of children under 12 to access the FREE evidence-based, online positive parenting program.

In just a few minutes a day, busy parents and carers can learn simple, evidence-based tips and strategies with Triple P Online. And it won’t break the budget - because it’s free! Along with making relationships stronger, this fully researched program improves child emotional wellbeing, problem solving and all-important social skills.

The separate Fear-Less Triple P Online program includes much of the above and also helps parents to teach children ways to reduce and overcome anxiety, while Triple P Online for Baby helps parents to take a positive approach - right from the beginning.

Children’s social skills - particularly in these changing times - are a hot topic in all school education settings. Visit the following website for more information:

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

QParents

QParent invites are continuing to roll out. By the time you read this newsletter, most, if not all, invites to the first listed parent in our school management system OneSchool will have received the unique invitation link and code.

We are seeing a constant flow of parents and carers signing up to QParents. We are processing approvals after parents/carers complete the ID verification step, as soon as we can. Once the final school approval occurs parents can then add your child/ren and start using the service.

Please do not hesitate to contact the office if unsure of any aspects or if you are simply wanting an additional parent to have access to QParents as well. If the additional parent is the one that is going to be responsible for paying invoices via QParent make sure you let us know this too. A setting change will need to be made so that your 2nd parent/carer can see and make payments.

It is great to see parents already using QParents for student absences and even invoice payments. By all reports it is simple, easy and very convenient to use.

If you haven’t chosen yet to sign up for QParents, check out the following two videos that highlight what QParents is about and how the ID verification process works. Both are very informative and useful.

Be Responsible – Big Effort, Big Results

It’s hard to believe we are already in the last fortnight of Term 1 for 2023. Our final PBL Buzz Phrase for the Term is a Be Responsible rule, “Big Effort, Big Results”. This Buzz Phrase helps us to focus on:

  • I stay with a task and never give up.
  • I show commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks.
  • I am patient and willing to work hard.
  • I set goals and stay focused.
  • I always do my best; I strive for excellence.
  • I am willing to risk failure for a worthy goal.
  • I am self-disciplined.
  • I make sure to learn from my mistakes and failures.

Thank you for a wonderful start to 2023 and the fantastic positive behaviours we have seen. Wishing all students and their families a happy and safe holiday.

Year 4A & 4B

Learning About Poetry

The Year 4 students have been learning about different poetic devices and how poems are structured. Over the last week we have focussed on spoonerisms, alliteration, onomatopoeia, neologisms, Puns and playground rhymes. We have been identifying rhyming patterns and writing our own poetry.

We are continuing to create our group PowerPoint for Media Arts to promote our beautiful rainforest.

In HASS, we have been plotting out Captain Cook’s voyage on the HMS Endeavour and have learnt about Tupai from Tahiti who was also a great navigator and could help translate the language with the Maori people.

In Science, we have been busy looking at how both natural and human processes can cause erosion. We completed an investigation about water erosion with sandcastles. In our special science assessment, we will compare water run off from different surface; grass, mulch and bare soil.

The Year 4 students have been busy practicing our song for Harmony Day – Kind Hearted Hand and is sounds amazing. The message for the song is that Kindness Matters.

Year 5A & 5B

Writing- Quest Narrative

Year 5 students have been busy over the last few weeks writing their own short fantasy narrative for their English Assessment. Students have investigated developing their setting and characters by using great descriptions as well as similes, metaphors and personification. Now they are completing the final stage of editing and publishing their final drafts

Art- Heroes or Villains

This term students have investigated some modern-day heroes and villains, characters from Greek mythology and the Terracotta Army to design and create their own versions of heroes and villains. Consideration was given to various elements of design before making their creations. Here are a few of their designs.

Education Queensland eBook Digital Library

Once again we have confirmed access to all students at Maleny State School to be signed up the Education Queensland eBook Digital Library. This online repository of books has over 80,000 eBooks, audiobooks , read-along books , and magazines . That is twice the number of books in our entire school library.

To log in, they can visit the Sora website , or download the free Sora app on a mobile device, find the school ‘Education Queensland’, and log in with their MIS ID. If not sure of your child’s MIS ID check in with your child’s class teacher.

With the school holidays starting soon and many families travelling these holidays, this is the perfect way to still access heaps of books to keep the kids entertained.

Great Progress with the Garden and Rainforest

Our Garden Club members are truly inspirational and have completed a huge amount of work in the garden and the school rainforest over the last two weeks. We have managed to add three of our composting pods into our garden beds and will put the remaining pods down near the chook pen. It was very hot and hard work, but they persevered and were pleased to enjoy an ice-block by the second lunch.

On Friday we added 1000 worms and some compost to each pod which was very satisfying.

On Friday Chad Oliver from (Land for Wildlife) came to help us identify weeds in the school rainforest as part of a grant we received. We were so lucky to have Merrick (P&C), Mark our fabulous groundsman, Kate Stassen and even some of our wonderful senior Garden Club members attended for a session as well. We managed to clear away piles of Wandering Jew and lantana and remove Madiera Vine seedlings. We found some native grasses and small rainforest plants regenerating as we carefully cleared out the weeds. It was exciting to locate the beautiful fungi (Wanga) on a number of trees. We are hoping to create a Yarning Circle in the future near the entry of our rainforest so classes can complete work within the forest.

Chappy News

Chappy’s Champions

I have the privilege of presenting a ‘Chappy’s Champion’ award every fortnight at assembly. The winner of this award receives a certificate and an opportunity to participate in an afternoon tea with a few friends and myself in the ‘Chappy room’. What a joy it is to highlight a student’s success in their positive learning and behaviour. There are so many amazing students here at Maleny State School that I find it difficult to just choose one person. So many of our students display kindness, patience, understanding, thoughtfulness and care. It is wonderful that the school teaches, encourages and supports our students in these positive character attributes.

This prompted me to think about how we acknowledge positive experiences at home. Do we take every opportunity to point out the positive character traits in our children? I think busyness and pressures of life sometimes interferes with us giving each other positive feedback as often as needed. I know that I personally get stuck in fault finding cycles at times with my own children. Yet research has shown that positive feedback when used appropriately (not overused) can develop our children’s self-esteem, positive mindset, resilience and determination.

So, let’s look for opportunities to build our children up. Let’s make the words we say to them realistic, personalised and supportive. Yes, we still need to guide and correct our children when they are on the wrong track however, we can also balance this out with words of encouragement. I urge you to take time to think about the character traits that you see displayed in your family members. Speak these out, make sure your young ones know that they are learning and growing in a supportive environment. I am going to make it a goal to look for my ‘Chappy’s Champions’ at home as well as at school, I hope you are able to do this as well.

Chappy’s quote for the day “Affirming words from Mums and Dads are like light switches. Speak a word of affirmation at the right moment in a child’s life and it is like lighting up a whole roomful of possibilities” Gary Smiley

Breaky Club

Hello everyone,

Firstly, just to let everyone know there will be no breakfast club week 10 of term as I will be away at a PD.

Secondly, I have told the students every Thursday this term that they must eat their breakfast at breakfast club and not take it with them. They are reminded every week, they are asked to sit down until they eat their breakfast and if they get up to leave with food I tell them to finish first. I will also endeavour to finish up as close to first bell as possible.

So, if you see a student eating food from breakfast club around the school I apologise but if I turn around to do something some students may be slipping away. However, the students know what the desired behaviour is and if they choose to do something other than that I will leave it with you to remind them and/or give out consequences as needed (hope that's the right wording). Trying to make it work for everyone, thank you for your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Chris Boughen
