Principal’s Report

Maleny Community Country Fair

Just a reminder that on Friday 24th March, from 3:30pm-8:00pm we are holding our Community Country Fair. We will be joined by Conondale State School and the River School. This is our largest Fundraiser of the year.

Last assembly we enticed our students and parents with a slide show of some of the amazing stalls, rides and attractions that will be at this year’s Fair, including the Apex Prawn Skewers, Dodgem Cars, Laughing Clowns, Lucky Ducks, a Petting Zoo, Fireworks, Food Stalls, Bar and so much more.

There is still time to purchase your ride wristbands and stall tickets to avoid waiting in big queues. Don’t forget this is a cashless Fair so purchase your raffle and stall tickets on the link below to avoid delay on the day. Most stall tickets will cost $4 a turn.

https://www.malenypandc.com.au/maleny-country-fair

Please check-in with your child’s class teacher to find out how you may be able to assist in the lead up to the Fair, or during the Fair, your help and contributions will be greatly appreciated.

Second Hand Books

Second Hand Books can still be dropped into the office.

Homemade Cakes and Sweets

Anyone making Homemade Cakes and Sweets for the Cake Stall, are asked to drop these off to the Office on the day of the Fair. Please list the ingredients on the outside of the item.

We look forward to seeing as many families as possible enjoying the fun of the Fair!

Bullying No Way Day/Harmony Day

This year we again made a school decision to celebrate these two days together on Friday 24th March. Maleny State School has always combined these two important days together. Students will be able to wear orange on Friday 24th March to show their support for the anti-bullying campaign. Students who are wearing orange will be asked to bring a gold coin donation. The money raised goes to support the local Maleny group Welcome2Maleny which supports refugees. There will be a special assembly in the morning starting at 9:00am which will feature important anti-bullying messages and also musical presentations by our year 4’s, year 1’s and preps.

Have a Magic week in Maleny.

Support for families who are facing difficult times - Family and Child Connect

Families often face challenges, if your family is going through tough times and you don’t know what to do, you may contact Family and Child Connect for free, unlimited and confidential advice.

They are available to listen and connect you to practical support.

A range of Family and Child Connect resources  are available for families.

How they can help

Family and Child Connect can help with a range of family and parenting challenges. They can talk with you about your situation and work out the type of support you might find helpful.

They can connect you to local services that can help with:

  • managing your child’s behaviour (e.g. school avoidance, homework, tantrums)
  • building better family relationships
  • stopping any violence at home
  • budgeting and managing money
  • alcohol, drug or gambling problems
  • housing, health care or access to other community or government services.

You can use this service as often as you need. There is no limit and no cost.

Every family is different so when you speak with them you will get advice and support specific to your situation.

What happens when you call?

When you contact Family and Child Connect you’ll speak with an experienced family support worker who will listen to you and put you in touch with people who have assisted others in tough times.

They may be able to help you in just one phone call – either by providing advice or referring you to a support service – or they might arrange to visit you at home or a safe place to talk. You can also work with a domestic violence support worker.

In some areas, there are family support services run by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations. Most family support services can offer families the choice of working with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander family support worker.

How can you contact Family and Child Connect?

You can make contact by visiting them in person, calling 13 FAMILY (13 32 64) or by completing their online referral form .

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

BE SAFE – HIGH FIVE – SAY NO TO BULLYING

This fortnight we “Take a Stand and Say NO to Bullying”.

This means we think about:

  • Always speak and treat others respectfully, in person, behind people’s backs and online.
  • Teasing escalates and can turn into bullying.
  • Include rather than exclude others
  • Treat others like you wish to be treated
  • Report bullying and stand up for others rather than joining in or saying nothing
  • Use the High Five strategy

We help all students to build POSITIVE RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS and encourage all to be a positive bystander, also known as an ‘Upstander’.

HIGH FIVE STRATEGY

There are five simple steps to follow, however if someone is in danger, has been/being hurt, students are told to always REPORT to an adult immediately.

The five steps are:

  1. IGNORE: Pretend you didn't hear it · Maintain a positive body posture (calm, confident) · Take deep breaths · Do not make eye contact. · Count to five in your head · Think positive self-esteem statements.
  2. TALK FRIENDLY: Use a calm voice. · Ask the person to STOP · Tell the person you don’t like it. · Use “I” statements eg. “I don’t like it when you talk to me like that, please stop.”
  3. WALK AWAY: Do not look back. Walk confidently, do not run. · Look confident - stand tall, head up high. · Walk away to a busy area or towards a teacher or adult on duty.
  4. TALK FIRMLY: Use an assertive, loud voice. · Re-state your “I” statement. e.g. “I said I don’t like that, stop!” · Look confident - stand tall, head up high. Walk away to a busy area or towards a teacher or adult on duty.
  5. REPORT: Walk away and tell a staff member. · Bystanders need to support and report. Report, report, report until somebody listens. · Reporting is helping/getting yourself out of trouble. · Dobbing is trying to get someone in trouble.

WOW Week 8!!!

Students enjoyed swimming this term and have been grateful for the opportunity to cool down. We are looking forward to the Country Fair in week 9, remember to pre-order your tickets and ride wrist bands. Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered to be on a stall we really appreciate the support.

Our next English Unit is based on narrative writing, students will write a short story that has a sizzling start, complication (pebble, brick and boulder) and exciting ending. We are looking forward to seeing some of our lunch box creations in science and will be starting our unit in design technology. Students have been singing about the seven continents in HASS and have gained an understanding of where Australia sits in relation to the rest of the world. We have been creating some beautiful artwork around colour and mood, some of these will be up on display in the school foyer from the end of week 8!

Sustainability Captain News

March 5 was the National Clean Up Australia Day and families and friends gathered at Tesch Park in good numbers. Coordinated by Maleny School parent Jo Turner, the group was divided into teams, given our safety brief and rubbish bags and sent out to 'hot spots' to clean-up. Although the areas had been cleaned in February, there was still plenty to pick up unfortunately. Happily, the morning ended with lots of rubbish removed and the Obi looking beautiful.

Chappy News

Bubbles!

For the past nine months I have been driving to Maleny from Mapleton. So, I get the joy of driving through bubbles every time I come across the range as a shop in Montville has a great big bubble machine. Every day I drive through I express the word “Bubbles!” in an animated voice. Why you may ask, well I am a little bit weird that goes without saying but the other reason is I want my children to experience fun and joy in their life.

When I was growing up my Mum always made sure that we had fun. I grew up in a working-class family, some weeks even having to sell stuff to get some money together for food. My sister and I knew we weren’t well off and sometimes we felt it when comparing ourselves to other families. However, we never missed out on fun even through the stresses and strains of everyday life. Jokes, funny stories, family holidays and finding the joy every day were a staple from my Mum. When travelling we played car cricket, eye spy and the number plate game. Mum would let us jump in puddles, walk on frosty ground, freeze our water bottles by leaving them outside in the Stanthorpe winter and build cubby houses in the bush at our farm. I have so many fond memories of having fun with my Mum and sister. I believe it has helped shape me into the woman I am today, not someone that avoids the hard parts of life but someone who also is able to let go and have fun. I again am living with my Mum to help her at this time, she still likes to have fun and we still have lots of laughs which in turn carries her through some of those more difficult times that come with getting older.

Research shows that families that have fun together build their cohesion and sense of identity and belonging. So, I am going to keep prioritising fun. This also gives me an excuse as an almost 50-year-old woman to act a little weird and embrace it. How can you include fun into your family and with your children? It is not about denying the hard stuff in life and glossing over it but it’s about a bit of balance. Is it a games night on Friday night, is it a joke book on the table, is it a fun family holiday or weekend away or a day at the beach? Maybe playing spotto or telling funny stories on the drive to school or home. Being out the front of the school some mornings I have seen parents and students dancing, racing, playing hide and seek in the entrance to prep and smiling and laughing, how wonderful. I know it takes extra effort but I reckon it’s worth it. Let’s leave a legacy of fun.
