Religious Instruction

Religious Instruction lessons will begin this week for Yrs 1-6.

Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide Religious Instruction (RI).

RI is required to be consistent with legislation and Department of Education policies and procedures.

All RI Instructors must hold a blue card and participate in compulsory Student Protection and Code of Conduct training. RI instructors are only entitled to deliver the RI program outlined and approved. A school staff member will be present during the delivery of RI lessons.

Participation in RI is not compulsory. Any student (except Prep students) may participate in RI if a parent has provided written instructions to the school.

Students are allocated to RI based on information provided by parents on the completed Application for student enrolment unless other written instructions have been provided to the school.

Note: This consent remains in effect unless the parent informs the school otherwise in writing.

At Maleny SS each of the instructors provide a Cooperative Arrangement Religious Instruction Program under the provisions of s.76 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (The Act) and the Education (General Provisions) Regulation 2017.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Change of Date: Bullying No Way Day!

Due to NAPLAN being on when ‘Bullying No Way day’ and ‘Harmony day’ are on, we have made a school decision to shift the day to the Friday of the Country Fair, that way none of the Yr3s and Yr5s miss out. We will have an assembly in the morning of 24 March – our Yr 4s are going to sing at the Country Fair a song chosen to celebrate these days, Ms Abbott will also be getting the Preps and Yr1s to do a song at this assembly.

Thanks everyone, mark it in your calendars

2023 Glasshouse District Swimming Carnival Report

On Friday 17 February the Glasshouse District Swimming Carnival was held at the Beerwah Pool. Maleny State School sent an enthusiastic team of 12 swimmers to compete against 17 other schools in our district. Throughout the day, swimmers from all schools swam strongly with many great times being recorded.

A very special thank you goes to the Maleny State School P&C who provided all school representatives with our school swimming caps to compete in. Our school looked amazing with their school caps.

Maleny State School swimmers showed great determination and endeavour in all races. This helped them secure 3rd place just behind the winners, St Michael’s College and Mooloolah State School. All Maleny swimmers are to be congratulated for their achievements and outstanding sportsmanship.

Year 4A & 4B

Writing our Chapter For The Twits

The Yr 4s have been busy planning a chapter to write for The Twits. We brainstormed different types of pranks and have shared lots of laughs together. We have been using our Learning Wall to plan our writing and to check off criteria to achieve our individual goals. The purpose of the writing the chapter was to entertain others. We found it useful to complete a story map to help sequence our ideas.

4A has been using the Witness Box to try role playing of different characters. The judge kept order in the court and Mr and Mrs Twit both had to explain their actions before the jury decided who was guilty.

In Science we have been learning about weathering and testing different soils.

Both classes have been visiting the rainforest to take notes on special attractions. We started taking photos in our groups to upload and use in our persuasive PowerPoint presentations.

Lou Walsh & Trish Mackay (4A) Sarah Martin (4B)

Year 5A & 5B

Design Technology

This term 5A and 5B have been busy investigating various packaging and services. They have been looking at the purpose or reason for the service as well as special features and materials used in the packaging. Soon students will start designing and creating their own packaging to provide people with herb. To accompany the packaged herb students will provide helpful care information and a recipe which they have researched.

Visual Arts

Over the last few weeks students have been looking at how heroes and villains are portrayed. This has involved modern day versions as well as ancient Greek and Roman mythical creatures. This week students will start designing their own hero/villain using design elements to create a 3D model/sculpture.

Report from Imogen (Sustainability Captain)

Garden Club and Sustainability News

This fortnight in Garden Club we have seen changes in our garden including the clearing of beds and the rotation of crops, introducing a fresh generation of seedlings to our garden. We also have planted three new Davidson Plums in our rainforest which hopefully will continue to look as amazing as they are now! Speaking of the rainforest we have refreshed our signs at the entrance and throughout the forest itself. We also have added a new gardening system which is straw beds! Yep, we cut a hole in a hay bale, believe me it’s not easy (thanks to Mark (our lovely groundsman) for the help!).

We have also been able to get an awesome gardening book by Hannah Maloney, called The Good Life – How to Grow a better World. Many thanks to the Bandicoot Book Club members for donating to the Garden Club so we could buy this.

There was also this year’s first Great Obi Clean Up organised by one of the school’s mums Joanne Turner. A great morning out with my family with a sausage sizzle at the end. There is another one coming in March a great way to support our platypus – stay tuned!

A big thanks to Mrs Walsh and all the Garden Club members who participated throughout this fortnight. We appreciate all the help we can get!

By Imogen Ilett, Sustainability Captain

Our New Signs for the Rainforest

Thank you to the P & C for funding and purchasing our Jinibara Language signs for the rainforest.

We have been very busy doing some weeding in the rainforest and adding some Davidson Plum seedlings.

In our school garden the garden club members have been weeding, adding topsoil and mulching the beds. We have added new vegetables and herbs to the garden including – garlic, corn, broccoli, beans, carrots, lemon verbena and beetle leaf.

Our new compost chests are on their way and we will be looking for some volunteers to help install these in the garden area.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Changes

We all experience change, there is no getting away from it. There have been some changes at school, new year level for students, a new teacher or two, new uniform shop, new tuckshop menu, even a change of name to the Mewar Café. However, many things have stayed the same at Maleny State School which is wonderful too as it gives us a sense of stability.

I have decided to change around my lunch time programs a little. Wednesday and Thursdays at first break we are now having Lego club. Students are invited to come along and play with a plethora of Lego and create a build that correlates to the theme of the week. They are also free to do free Lego play if they aren’t wanting to take part of the activity. Why Lego some may ask? Well a few reasons. This activity is good for fine motor, socialisation, negotiation, sharing and creativity skills, just to name a few. Lego gives some of our students opportunities to show skills and confidence in an area other than gross motor or athletic skills. We have had a good roll up thus far to this club and a lot of amazing Lego builds. Fridays at first break we are having ‘Random acts of kindness’ club. We are seeking out opportunities for kindness to others. So far, we have made some cards with notes of encouragement for others.

These are only little changes that are not life changing, but it prompted me to think about bigger changes that we may be experiencing. My son has just started Year five at Maleny State School. That is a big change for our family after 6 months of home schooling and moving from Logan last year. He has coped fairly well however it is a day by day thing for him, some days are better than others.

Change can be a good thing, it also can be a challenge, depending on the circumstances. How do you cope with or embrace change? I encourage you to learn about and model some good practices in this area to pass on to your children, they learn from you in these types of circumstances. Experts say the top strategies in this area are a positive mindset, connection to friends and family, self-care, planning as much as you can and working out what you can control and what you cannot. Talking about changes coming up with your family also helps them to be mentally prepared. Anyway, my aim is to continue to practice these skills as we go through changes, I encourage you to think about them as well.

A request from Chappy this time. Breakfast club needs some bits and pieces. Are you able to donate a jar of jam, a tin of milo, a packet of disposable cereal bowls or some serviettes? If so, can you please drop them to the school office for us? Thank you.

Chappy’s quote for the day “Change is inevitable, growth is optional” John Maxwell.
