Principal’s Report

Find a Frog February

When asked last week, ‘What do principals do?’ I forgot to mention, they go out at night looking for frogs.

Last Friday evening I joined in with Kate and Vince Stassen and a very keen group of Year 6 Scientists looking for frogs in our rainforest area. Eva Ford from the Mary River Catchment Committee led our group teaching us about frogs and how to find and identify them. Children recorded data on all frogs spotted to assist with formal frog data within our local area.

In total we identified 11 frogs including the Great Barred Frog, the Giant Barred Frog and the Stony Creek Frog, hundreds of spiders, a bandicoot and tawny frogmouth! Thanks Kate for organising this special event and Eva who taught us all so much.

Mini Excavator Services Donated

Thank you to QCF Plumbing and Drainage who have generously offered to donate the labour and machinery to complete the upgrade to the entrance to the School’s Oval.

Yr 6 Leadership Ceremony

This Thursday 16 February 9:00am – 10:15am we will hold our Yr 6 leadership badge ceremony. Students from Yrs 1-6 will be in attendance.

Parent Teacher Interviews (Yrs 1-6)

This week and next we encourage all parents to take the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher and inform the teacher about your child and how they learn best (e.g. what they are good at, interests, motivators, special needs or considerations, medical issues, social abilities, academic challenges, behaviour). Teachers will be able to briefly communicate how your child is settling in and inform you if there are any early concerns noted. A second interview will be held later in the year where teachers will do the majority of talking, giving parents more detailed and explicit information around how your child is progressing academically, behaviourally and socially at school. You will also receive your child’s Semester One report around this time.

Note: Parents are welcome to meet with their child’s teacher at any stage throughout the year, please ensure you make an appointment beforehand with the teacher to enable this to be a productive meeting.

Email: Ensure you have your teacher’s email address to further facilitate parent / teacher communication and they have yours.

P&C AGM Meeting

Our P&C AGM will be held on Wednesday 8 March at 8:50am in the OSHC Room. Younger children are welcome, where parents can occupy them and be responsible for them. Please join us face to face or online, new faces are always welcome and encouraged. Further notification of this meeting will be emailed in the future. Our Country Fair is in Week 9 (Friday 24 March) and will be an important focus of this meeting.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John 

2023 NAPLAN Online update

Our students in years 3 and 5 will be undertaking NAPLAN testing online at various times from 15th March – 27th March. Moving to NAPLAN online brings many advantages including a test design that offers test items tailored to students’ knowledge and ability.

The timetable below is a draft outline of the days and times that the various tests will be undertaken. Please note that testing for a student does not run all day during the test window – there are only 4 tests that a student will undertake and the time taken for each is noted in the table below.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

What a great start to 2023!

What a calm and happy start to 2023 we have had. Congratulations to all our students. As students are now settled into their new classrooms and routines, we are ready to welcome our second BUZZ Phrase focus for the year.

Be a Learner – “Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn”

This Be a Learner focus helps students really focus on their learning as we start to unpack the learning goals for the Term.

This means:

  • use whole body listening – posture, eyes, mouth, hands
  • listen without interrupting
  • raise my hand if I have a question or don’t understand, but I wait until the person speaking has finished
  • wait if people are speaking to stop before I join in.
  • actively listen to what others are saying so I can understand and comment on what they are saying rather than thinking about what I am going to say next.
  • am silent in a group when someone is speaking, and my eyes are on the speaker.
  • do not engage in side-conversations when someone is speaking.

Prep A & Prep B

Welcome to our 2023 Preps and their families

It has been wonderful getting to know the new Preppies and their families.

In Prep, we are learning all about families. We are thinking about what families look like and recognising that families are made up of people who are connected to each other. We have been exploring different ways to represent our families.

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Jenny Jenkinson (Prep B)

Year 2A & 2B

Welcome Back!

What an amazing start to the school year. We have spent the last couple of weeks getting to know one another and setting up classroom routines. Students have settled back into school life and are enjoying our Poetry unit. Students should have all received homework this week with the priority being that we read every day. Please remember to bring homework folders on the days when students need to change home readers. Homework is due each Monday.

Swimming has started and we wanted to thank families for your support in providing all the required items. Year 2 has loved spending these sizzling summer days in the pool. A reminder that we have a school policy of no hat no play, so please send your child with their hat to school every day. Looking forward to a great term and some busy weeks ahead.

Practicing calmness in chaos

Recently I was reminded about the effectiveness of practicing calmness in chaos. That is for my own mental health and also for my family’s harmony. Once again, we are back in a busy term and school year and time is flying. It is so easy for us as staff, parents, students to become worked up with things happening around us and pressures from everyday life. We are living in an ever increasing busy-ness. We are prompting our children to hurry up and get ready for school as we are running around packing lunches, finding uniform pieces and socks.

I know as a parent it is easy for my voice to become escalated, for my words to spill out quicker and louder when I am in a hurry or feel pressured. Likewise, when my children are going through a tough time with a decision that was made or a negative social interaction they have experienced and they are presenting slightly chaotic or unreasonably my mood tends to escalate and I find it more difficult to stay calm.

My children have both been doing equine therapy. The therapist has told us that horses tend to calm people down. Apparently horses and their manner, the way they breathe and their heart beats and the way they walk all has a calming effect.

It is the same with people. If we can stay calm when someone else is chaotic it can rub off more easily on the other person. I remember at university when studying social work and counselling they taught us about slowing down our breathing when working with someone who is anxious in order to assist them in slowing their own breathing.

So, not always easy to be calm in our children’s chaos, but it is worth practicing. We can demonstrate to our children how to take some deep breaths, step outside or away from the situation, use calm tone and words when feeling stressed. We can assist them by mirroring the more suitable solution. I am far from perfect at this but I want to encourage you to continue to try to be their calm in the chaos as I will be doing also.

Chappy’s quote for the day “Be the calm you want to see in your child” Renee Jain.
