Principal’s Report
Munimbah Yuddi Guddi!
Jinibara elders Uncle Noel and Uncle Jason visited our school this week. Uncle Noel shared his artwork with the children of 2A and 2/3C. He spoke of his love of drawing and encouraged the children to draw with patience and attention to detail. The students enjoyed colouring Uncle Noel’s drawing of goroman (kangaroo), djunben (goanna), guyur (fish) and njarinbam (turtle), and practising the Jinibara language words. Uncle Noel told the children about the amazing taste of roast echidna and how people cook them over coals after the spines have been removed. We look forward to working more with our Jinibara elders into the future and join Uncle Noel about being excited to bring more Jinibara language into our school. A huge thank you to Kate Stassen for coordinating the visit of Uncle Noel and Uncle Jason to work with our students.

Congratulations to Jodie Deagon and Dr Zoltan Bourne
It was great to see two of our very passionate and hardworking volunteers receive an award at Andrew Powell’s Glasshouse Volunteers Award Ceremony on Friday.
Jodie has been volunteering in our junior classrooms every day for the last 28 years, an amazing effort of service that won’t be beaten in my lifetime. Jodie has been assisting our teachers and students with everything from reading to students (which has had a big impact for some of our Yr 1 students who have had one on one reading each day), photocopying, preparing resources, to tying up shoe laces.
Zoltan, as president of our P&C, has introduced and implemented a number of new initiatives such as the re-branding of our Country Fair to be a true Community Country Fair by inviting other local schools and community groups, which has resulted in a tripling of our profit raised. Zoltan has also been instrumental in the introduction of our new Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service that enables parents’ peace of mind that their children can be left safely before or after school and during the school holidays, to be cared for and engaged in motivating activities with wonderful staff and facilities. Zoltan has created a P&C website that allows easy access to information for parents online, in addition to being able to purchase uniforms and other items from the Maleny P&C Store. Zoltan has also assisted us in designing our new P&C Store (Uniform Shop) that will be complete soon. Check it out at the link below. To find out the many other things that Zoltan does for our school come along or log in to our next P&C Meeting.

Many thanks to both Jodie and Zoltan for their volunteering efforts at our school which are making a positive difference for our students, staff and community.
Volunteers Morning Tea
All school volunteers who have assisted our school in any form are invited to attend our Volunteers Morning Tea on Monday 28 November at 10:00am in our hall. Please ensure you have sent your RSVP to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au
Funky Friday Free Dress Day – Gold Coin
Next Friday 2 December, our Student Council will hold a free dress day with the theme being FUNKY FRIDAY FREE DRESS DAY. Students can come with crazy hair, crazy socks or just their favourite free dress attire which needs to be sun safe (requires sleeves), shoes and appropriate dress standards and slogans.
School Crossing Update
We welcome two new School Crossing Supervisors who will be sharing the crossing duties at our school with David. Scott and Dulcie have recently been recruited and trained by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. They are part of the team of over 2100 crossing supervisors operating at 708 schools across Queensland.
Please help the Crossing Supervisors to maintain a safe environment for the school community. Children and carers can assist by following the supervisor’s directions and play their part by waiting behind the yellow line until the supervisor has checked the traffic and signaled by two whistles that it is safe to cross. When crossing please walk straight across and dismount if on a scooter or bicycle.

Semester Two Reports 2022
School reports will be emailed to parents in the last week of school.
Leaving our school or have a 2023 Prep student enrolling
Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2023 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that all 2023 students including Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now to ensure our prediction of our class structure is accurate.
P&C Meeting
Our next meeting will be Wednesday 8 February 2023 at 8:50am in the Innovation Centre. We hope that you can attend our first meeting of 2023.
Have a Magic Week in Maleny.
John 😊

Semester 2 Reports Emailed
Semester 2 Reports will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Wednesday 7 December. We remind parents that OneSchool, which is the Department of Education’s Statewide Management System, is set up in a way that it will only email out to parents whose emails are recorded as the primary carers in the system. Usually these emails are provided at enrolment. If these email details have changed please contact the Office on 5499 8333.
To receive your child’s report please add Application.ONESCHOOL@qed.qld.gov.au ( mailto:Application.ONESCHOOL@qed.qld.gov.au ) to your list of safe senders to ensure report card emails aren’t sent to the Junk folder. Please note, the school’s email address won’t show up as the sender.

QParents is coming at the beginning of 2023
QParents Showcased at Prep Open Days
At the recent Prep open days, parents of Maleny State School were shown QParents and had aspects of the benefits of what the system can do to make parents’ lives much easier. Many parents commented at the open day that the system sounds like a great idea and it will help make communication easier with the school on such things like student absences, school bill payments and the newly released Consent Management system (excursion permissions, online services, etc), which can all be done within the app/website for immediate notifications to school. No need to make calls.
A number of systems are included in QParents. Check out the videos below on some aspects to look forward to in 2023.
QParents - managing student attendance
How will I get access to QParents?
Once the school has launched QParents in 2023, parents will then be nominated by the school as QParents Account Owners (QPAOs) for access to student information. Email invitations will be sent directly to parents, so make sure we have your most current address in our records. The nominated QPAOs will then need to register with QParents to access this information. See 'Registering for QParents' for further information. Once registration and ID check has been submitted, the school makes a final check and, if all OK, activates QParents so the QPAOs can start using it.
For detailed information on QParents and registration, visit - Help (qparents.qld.edu.au) or download the QParents Registration Factsheet - QParents registration fact sheet (education.qld.gov.au)
PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Responsible – Make Good Choices
We have only one week left of our last SMART GOAL for 2022 “Make Good Choices” and our rocket is already half full! Students and staff alike are all looking forward to filling the rocket at our next assembly and 20 minutes extra play time.
Make Good Choices
This rule covers so many all in one. It means:
- I try my best
- I am honest
- I am responsible for my behaviour
- I follow the 4Be’s
- I am a positive role model
- I take responsibility for solving my problems
PBL Team
Year 4A & 4B
Over the last two weeks, the Yr 4 students have been learning about advertising and the persuasive techniques used to convince us to buy products. We have investigated language features like exaggeration and commands as well as visual techniques like the importance of colours, placement and framing of products.

The students have worked in groups to write their own ads to advertise different items and to use language features to convince their peers. We are now looking at different cereal boxes and identifying persuasive techniques, the specific audience that it is intended for and making comparisons between different cereal boxes.

The students are using the information from our Learning Wall to complete comparisons and incorporate new vocabulary into their writing.
4A has been completing some self-portraits using grid art and they are outstanding. They will be exhibiting these next Wednesday when the children attend parade. Thanks to Maggie Walsh for offering some assistance with this over the last few weeks.
The Yr 4’s enjoyed our Interhouse spelling competition, and everyone did a great job working together for their team.
Kind regards
Lou Walsh & Trish Mackay (4A) Shalisa Dennis (4B)
Year 5A, 5B & 5C
Leadership Positions
Recently the Yr 4 and 5 students have completed the voting stage of the leadership positions for 2023. This process involved candidates nominating, completing a passport with a page addressing selection criteria, an interview and delivering speeches, even before the election stage. All students who undertook this process impressed the Yr 5 teachers and we would like to congratulate them for all of the time and effort that they put into it. We are very proud. The announcements of some of these positions will happen later this year and others at the start of 2023. Some students have also opted for joining the Student Council and applications for that will happen early next year.
Year 5 Camp
After a year of waiting, the Yr 5 camp to Maranatha (Yandina) is here. The focus of this camp is leadership and teamwork. Students need to work as a team in different activities and co-operate to achieve a common goal. There will be:
- Opportunities to challenge themselves
- Chances to shine
- Times to be a TEAM member and an individual
- Lots of Activities to have FUN! (Kayaking, Tower of Tremble, Giant Swing, Archery, Bridge Building and a Ropes course)

Final borrowing for 2022
Most student book borrowing will be completed this week. Any books borrowed over the week will be due within two weeks. This will mean that children will have all books due by the end of the second last week of the school year. The last week will be for anyone who may forget and need an extra day or two to get their books in.
Lost or damaged books
In the next week, children with overdue books will get a small note listing any books they have overdue along with the associated replacement costs. If you get one of the notes home, please assist your child/ren to have a good look around the house to locate them. Most overdue books end up being found in cupboards, under the bed or in other children’s rooms after a sneaky borrow at home. If you are unable to locate any book or are sure they have been lost, please make a payment for the cost of the book at the office.

War on Waste
Hopeful for a New Grant for Recycling our Organic Waste
I have just submitted a grant for $2500 to purchase new Subpods to collect our compost in. These are a new design from Byron Bay and will be easier to use for all children in the school. If we are successful, the Prep classes will obtain two for their area and four new ones will go in the school garden area. Four of our eight old compost tumblers are starting to deteriorate and need to be replaced so fingers crossed we’ll be successful. The beauty of the new subpod is that worms will be added to help break down the food scraps and these new pods will be positioned near the garden and wicking beds so we can empty the compost into the beds without as much trouble when it is ready. We should hear back before the end of the year so I will keep you posted.

Trying out a New Recipe
Today the garden club members made up a new recipe using spearmint and mint with pineapple. It was a great success and enjoyed by us all.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Meaningful family time
What do you define as family time? How do you best utilise time together? In this age of busy-ness and technology I find it is hard to make meaningful family time happen. My children are 11 and 10 yrs old and they love their technology time when it comes around on the weekends. However, we find this time has its advantages and disadvantages. The good thing is the kids are occupied and more independent so the grown-ups can have some relaxation time. The not so good thing for us is we feel a little disconnected from them during this time. So how do we as adults help balance alone time and together time and use it for the best family connection?
Experts suggest that little things like eating a meal together at the table distraction free, family board game nights, day trips and such are simple ways that we can build our connection with each other. Our family has found these types of small activities to be invaluable. We also try and make the most of the school holidays and plan some day trips or holidays away. I know that is not always easy due to work commitments or finances, however it is so important to help our children make positive memories with their family members. Family is not always blood relatives and this is understood, however we all need a group of people that we feel safe and accepted in regardless of our and their imperfections. So I encourage you to plan some meaningful time with your family. Blank it out in your diary, make it simple and achievable. Ask your children for some simple ideas of activities you can do together.
As a chaplain I am informed of various camps and activities in the school holidays that are available for children and their families. January 3 to 7 there is a Father Son camp coming up in Noosa. It is for students that are in Yrs 5 to 9 and their Dad or Father figure. It will be a fully catered camp with such activities as laser tag, water activities and build activities. I need to inform you that this is a Scripture Union camp so it will have some Christian content. However, it looks like a great opportunity to make meaningful memories. If you are interested you can email me on cboug13@eq.edu.au or give me a call at school. Additionally, if you would like to discuss help with fees to go to this camp or another Scripture Union camp let me know also as I have some avenues for helping with financial contribution to Scripture Union camps. Scripture Union run various camps on school holidays, have a look if you are interested at sucamps.org.au. These camps all have some Christian content.
Anyway, not long to go until we have our children home for a longer time. Let us all enjoy these moments and make some meaningful family memories.
Chappy’s quote for the day: “In the end, kids won't remember that fancy toy or game you bought for them, they will remember the time you spent with them” Kevin Heath.
