Principal’s Report
A Great Start to Term 4
Term 4 is always exciting and extremely busy. In the last 2 weeks I have attended this year’s State Principals Conference with 1400 colleagues and been on camp with our Yr 6 students last week at Noosa North Shore.
A strong theme coming from the Principals’ Conference was our new State focus over the next 5 years of ‘Equity and Excellence’. A theme that sits beautifully with how we already operate on a daily basis.
Our Yr 6 students were brilliant on camp and received glowing accolades from camp instructors on their respectful behaviour and enthusiastic participation in all activities. This was extremely pleasing as the weather was questionable but didn’t dampen our experience or students’ attitudes.
Most Profitable Country Fair
Congratulations to our P&C for transforming our Country Fair this year, ensuring it was our most successful Fair on record. I commend them for their creative thinking and being prepared to take significant calculated risks by implementing a number of new ways of operating. Some of these included: making it a cashless Fair, inviting other local primary schools to participate making it a truly inclusive community event (and allowing them a share in the profits) and introducing an online raffle.
Our P&C have finished reconciling this event and we can report the following net profit of $32,122.20 for our school. This is the largest profit that we have had and it would have been higher if we didn’t have the held over expenses of wastage from the cancellation of the 2021 Fair.
It was estimated that there would have been over 2,000 people pass through the event in over 4 hours with reports of people still queuing on the footpath trying to get in before the fireworks at 7.45pm. We allowed the rides and remaining stalls to go over time until 8:30pm to allow those that had purchased single tickets to utilise these.
There has been significant positive and robust feedback that our P&C will look to implement, making refinements to layout, number & types of games/food stalls plus a larger selection of rides that will better reflect the ages in attendance.
To be able to achieve this we will need a bigger commitment and involvement from a larger number of parents, especially in the lead up and set up on the day. A lot of heavy lifting for this event was done by only a small group of parents and staff to whom I am extremely grateful. I would also like to thank our local businesses who also provided the greatest community financial support that we have experienced in hosting this event.

Swimming Term 4
Swimming commences next Monday 31 October (Week 5). All students will participate in Swim and Survive Lessons. Swim and Survive is a national swimming and water safety program to teach children essential foundation skills in swimming, water safety, personal survival and basic rescue. These lessons will continue until Tuesday 29 November (Week 9).
Leaving our School or have a 2023 Prep Student enrolling
Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2023 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that all 2023 students, including Prep students, enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now to ensure our prediction of our class structure is accurate.

From the Deputy Principal
World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated across Australia on Friday 28 October 2022, a bit later than the international day due to our school holidays. It’s a great chance to thank teachers.
Easy ways to thank a teacher on World Teachers’ Day
The ideas below, make it super easy for you (or your child) to thank a teacher.
1. Thank you note/drawing
A short note, email or drawing from you or your child will be sure to make
any teacher smile. Try thinking of something the teacher might have done
recently to make it more personal.
2. Personalised card
A
personalised card is another easy and thoughtful way to say thanks.
4. Small gift ideas
Flowers from the garden, tea, apples or even a packet of native plant seeds
are popular small gifts for teachers.
9. Come to school with a smile on your face – ready to have a wonderful day of learning!
Day for Daniel - Friday 28 October - Recognise, React, Report!
The 28 October is also our Day for Daniel Walk. We encourage students to Wear Red and Donate a gold coin donation with all proceeds raised going to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Day for Daniel is Australia's largest child safety awareness and education day.
Our walk will occur on our school oval (weather permitting) with all students meeting in the Hall at 9:00am to hear some safety messages before walking proudly in their red colours around the oval.
Our goal is to make Australia a safe place for all children.
Thank you from one of our Volunteers
Last week one of our Volunteers slipped as she was walking up the steps, she was so overwhelmed by the support given by two of our students to assist her that she wished for this to be noted in this fortnight’s Familygram – so well done to Elaina and Minti for helping out and checking to see if Mrs McKinnon was OK. She is truly grateful and we at Maleny State School are so proud of you.

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
QParents is coming soon!
Maleny State School is aiming to make school business processes simpler for not only school office staff but for parents as well. QParents is an Education Queensland service provided by the Queensland Government, that is available to all state schools.
Maleny SS is aiming to reduce the amount of paper we print as well as reduce the need for high volumes of inbound and outbound phone calls related to student absences. The QParents app will allow for parents to send a message to report an absence, check invoices and make payments in app, access report cards, see important upcoming events and eventually when activated even provide consent for special activities (coming late 2022) all within the one app or online website.
QParents internal testing underway
We are currently doing internal testing with staff who have children who attend the school to test functionality as well as provide staff training to make sure when it is released to the parent community things will run as smoothly as possible.
Initial feedback from staff, using the app as a parent, they found the app easy to use and invoice payments especially handy.
More news will be coming soon as we get closer to a full rollout to the parent community at Maleny. In the meantime check out the overview video and basic QParents Factsheet on the school website.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Safe – Recognise, React and Report
This fortnight, in alignment with Day for Daniel on the 28th October, we have a Be Safe rule. Our Buzz Phrase is “Recognise, React and Report”.
That means:
- Our bodies can tell us CLUES when we don’t feel safe.
- I can run away from danger or scream out loudly.
- I can get help from an adult, the school Principal, a teacher, my parents and grandparents. I can ring 000 to get the police.
What does Recognise, React and Report mean?
RECOGNISE encourages students to
be aware of their surroundings and to recognise body clues in situations
where they don’t feel safe.
REACT helps students to consider choices that may
keep them safe or help make them safe again as quickly as possible.
REPORT encourages students to report unsafe
incidents to an adult.
At school, we will be having a lot of (age appropriate) classroom discussions around this topic. We will also help our students to think of 5 trusted adults and who they would talk to at school or home that would help and support them.

Year 4 Students Complete Wicking Beds for the Garden
For Technology and Design the students in year 4 had to create a dipping stick for our new wicking beds. On Thursday the students worked together to create our new wicking beds. We learnt about the wicking process which Is also called Capillary Action by observing coloured dye wick from the base up a paper napkin.

In English we have been reading Rowan of Rin and are now ready to write a written response to part of a chapter that shows how Rowan has challenged from the many challenges he faced on his quest with the other villagers. We have been completing a mural to show the journey that Rowan has made with the other members in the quest.

In Art we are working on writing a short script from the book and the children will perform in small groups on stage. On Friday we had Lockie Pountney come in to talk with the children about Drama and what rules to follow when performing and also how to be a supportive audience.
Lockie is studying to be a Drama teacher at university, so we are very lucky that he was able to practice his skills on us. All the students were very impressed!
In Science the students have been completing 60 challenges about contact and non-contact forces.

Amazing Scratch
Students in Year 5 have been SCRATCHING (digitally) like crazy as they work on their Digital Technology assessments. The purpose of this task is to educate younger children about how to be prepared in a disaster or how to have a healthy lifestyle through a coded game. Students have started to incorporate enemies such as doughnuts, lollies, takeaway foods or cyclones, storms and fires in their games. Rewards like fruits and vegetables or batteries and first aid kits are to be collected in order to score points as the players move through the maze. This assessment has both individual and group work components. Here’s a glimpse at a couple of our AMAZING maze games.

It’s ALL A DRAMA in Year 5
It’s been one drama after another in Year 5 recently. We have had floods, fires and droughts right in our classrooms (thanks to the help of GreenScreen technology). As part of Drama, students had to create a short scenario about a particular Natural Disaster. Students conducted interviews, disaster scenes or created infomercials about how to be prepared. Here are a few examples.

Lots of mulching in the garden beds
This week the year 4’s added two new wicking beds in our garden area. The garden club members have been busy mulching all the garden beds with hay donated to us from the country fair by our lovely P & C. We all enjoyed cooking kale chips and have designated one of our new wicking beds to grow only kale as it is a real favourite.

Belonging
Coming back from the school holidays was so delightful for me. I am starting to feel like I belong to the school more and more every day I am here. I enjoy chatting with students, staff and family members and feel blessed to have this job. When I return home from a day at school I experience that sense of belonging all over again with my own family.
What does belonging mean to you? What makes you feel like you belong to a family, group or community? For me it might be something as simple as a smile given or a greeting by name. Maybe acknowledgment for a job well done or a meaningful conversation. Another big part of belonging is an opportunity to express opinion and assist in goals and direction of the group.
I would like to encourage you to help someone else feel like they belong to your family, group or community. Acknowledge their presence and contribution to the group, give them space to contribute and use their giftings and don’t forget to smile, that always helps I reckon. Our children have so much to give and so much potential to learn and grow when we make sure they feel they belong.
