Principal’s Report
Country Fair
Thank you to the hundreds of families that attended our Country Fair on Friday Night to be part of a record crowd. An event that has been 2 years in the making came together beautifully, all be it in very challenging wet set up conditions. Thank you to those that responded and assisted in this process. With so many moving parts to an event like this involving 4 local schools and many community groups our P&C did a marvellous job in hosting such a truly unifying Community Country Fair with something for everyone. There are too many people to thank personally but please accept my sincere gratitude for whatever role you played to assist us before, during and after. I will single out our P&C executive (led by Zoltan Bourne). Without their personal commitment and months of generous time giving and organisation there simply is no Country Fair. Well done everyone on a very successful and enjoyable Fair. Please come to our next P&C Meeting to reflect and give your feedback to ensure our events continue to build upon each other. Independent feedback is incredibly valuable to us.
First Day of Term 4
A reminder that Term 4 commences on Tuesday, 4 October.
Thank you to everyone for such a supportive and collaborative term. We welcome some Spring weather and look forward to our final term in the lead up to Christmas.
Father’s Day Stall
Thank you to Kate Stassen and helpers who organised and ran the Father’s Day Stall. Stories indicate Dad’s woke up to some great surprises and gifts that will be cherished.
Disco
Our recent Disco was also a record breaker in student attendance. Great to see so many children engaged and having fun. Excellent behaviour of student reflected our current school culture and made for an enjoyable evening for all.

2023 Classes
Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4
Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by Friday 21 October 2022 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2023. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels will have two full class cohorts. This does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and an incredible amount of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form. Any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered. Once classes are formulated changes will not be made. Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2023 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2023 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.
Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.
It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2023 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one-minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2023. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2023 please encourage them to contact us immediately.
Prep Enrolment Interview Dates:
If you have not booked your Prep enrolment interview with your child please do so as soon as possible.
Interviews will be held on Thursday 6 October, Wednesday 12 October and Thursday 13 of October.
Please Call 54998333 to book your 20 min interview with your child collect enrolment forms from office or on the Web Site.
Welcome to Prep and Transition Days
Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on the 2, 9 and 16 November from 9:00am to 10:00am. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with Good Start Centre staff.
Prep Information Session
A Prep information session will be held in our school Innovation Centre on Wednesday 26 of October at 5:00pm. Teachers will explain in detail to parents what Prep is all about and answer specific questions on matters of interest.
Next P&C Meeting Time
There will be no P&C General Meeting in September as it falls immediately after the Country Fair and during our Year 4 Camp.
Our next meeting will be Wednesday 12 October at 8:50am in the Innovation Centre.
Have a Magic Holiday in Maleny.

From the Deputy Principal
R U OK? Day
Last week we, as a workplace, promoted R U OK? Day. Teaching can be very stressful and teacher stress can have a huge impact on wellbeing— statistically it is something that nearly half of all teachers say they experience at a high level every day.
Teachers are actually tied with nurses, with 46 percent of both groups reporting high daily stress. Such reports are comparable with other notoriously demanding occupations, such as physicians and business managers.
If you have a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it.
Learn more about the signs and when it’s time to ask R U OK? here.
By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow the conversation steps, in the link provided above, to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.
National Child Protection Week: 4th -10th September
Last week was National Child Protection Week the NAPCAN website: has helpful tips for parents on keeping children safe.
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation produced ‘Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson’ (ABCSL). The ABCSL was live streamed last Tuesday 6th September, there is an Early and Lower Primary lesson and an Upper Primary lesson. The Early Years and Lower Primary Lesson focussed on boundaries and body parts for children aged 4 to 7. The Upper Primary Lesson focussed on boundaries and body parts for children aged 8 to 12.
In Australia, 96% of abused children are abused by someone known and trusted by them. ABCSL explore concepts of personal safety and removing the secrecy, stigma and mystery around private body parts, while also teaching children about body ownership. These lessons are an easy way that we can all help to keep children safe. They are available to view and discuss with your children at Daniel Morcombe - ABCSL
Monday Afternoons – Staff Meetings
Just a reminder that every Monday from 3pm-4pm we hold our weekly staff meeting, this is a vital time for staff to take part in professional development, discuss student data and student wellbeing and to hear and discuss important messages. We ask that parents and carers who wish to make meetings with teachers please choose a time outside of this time. Thank you.

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
Lost Property
Lost property is checked every week and named items are returned to their owners.
Currently there is an overwhelming number of jumpers in lost property, many of which have been there for many weeks. Thank you to the Year 5 students who have been helping Miss Mandy to sort/tidy and return items to their owners. If not collected by the end of the term, these will be washed/cleaned and donated to local charities. Please ask your children to have a look, or yourself, in the alcove next to the Year 4 eating area.
We also have students who have lost items of clothing. Could parents please check the names on uniforms, especially jackets and hats.
PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
The Rocket is full!
Congratulations to all students, we not only filled the rocket, but it also actually overflowed on parade during week 8. We are so proud of all our students working together on this SMART Goal to be their best selves. Enjoy your well-earned 20minutes extra play time!
Be Your Best Self
What a wonderful SMART Goal and PBL focus to end Term 3 on. Incorporating all our “4 Be Rules”, being your best self means:
- I do my best and never give up
- I am patient and work hard
- I made sure to learn from my mistakes and choices
- I am a supportive school and class member
- I take responsibility of my actions and I am proud of my actions
- I treat myself and others with respect
- I am a role model to others
- I have a positive mindset
- I act safely at all times
Have a happy and safe Spring holiday, we look forward to welcoming you all back in Term 4.

Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will be visiting the school on 17 October 2022 to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year. Your child does not need a Medicare card in order to participate in screening. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete the online Consent Form by Wednesday 5 October 2022. Parents do not need to be present for screening, however if you would like to be, please contact the school to arrange this.
If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment. If a vision concern is identified and your child requires glasses, eligible health care card holders may be assisted with free basic glasses through the Spectacle Supply Scheme.
Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the online consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
Please click on the following link to access the Online Consent Form and Parent Information Letter. Alternatively you can scan the QR code below:
https://visionscreening.health.qld.gov.au/ParentalConsent/1608L6DH
Please note: The consent form link will close on Wednesday 5th October 2022.
If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.
Year 4A & 4B
Enjoying our Quest Novel, Rowan of Rin
Both classes have started reading our new quest novel called Rowan of Rin. We are completing online responses with our class peers when we finish reading three chapters at a time. We have to refer to evidence in the text to back up our opinions. We are completing a visual mural on our wall to show the journey of the characters and the challenges they face.
The students are investigating language features and have chosen a learning goal to work on for their writing.
Maggie (Mrs Walsh’s daughter) came in to teach 4A some Art techniques. The students in 4A completed a beautiful drawing of a bunya tree for Father’s Day or for someone special. Each one was different and completed with great pride.

In technology we have been investigating wicking beds and have all designed a dipstick to measure water in our garden beds. We looked at the dipstick in the car to see how it shows the amount of oil in the car. We then designed our own dipstick for the wicking beds.
We have also been learning to complete an excel spreadsheet to record the number of ten cent containers in our collection bags in each eating area. We sorted the containers and poppers seem to be the highest money maker for our garden club budget.

Next week we are heading to camp at Currimundi Recreational Centre and we are all very excited about completing all the challenging activities and learning how valuable it is to work as a team.
Many thanks to all the parents who donated beautiful cakes for our country fair stall. Our stall looked amazing and was very popular.

Multimodal English Assessments
In the latest unit of English students transformed an Australian poem by Banjo Patterson into a narrative. Students chose between Waltzing Matilda or the Man from Ironbark to present as a powerpoint with text, images, audio and navigation buttons. We have been learning how to use various functions in the software. Here’s some of unfinished work from 5A:

Digital Technology
This semester we will look at components of a computer and digital networks. We have looked at various parts and their functions like CPU, network interface controller, ethernet cables, hardware and software, input and output functions before looking at coding with Scratch. Next term will see students collaboratively creating a maze game for a young audience which solves a problem (healthy lifestyle or being prepared for natural disasters).

Parade Presentation
The Garden Club members put together an entertaining and informative PowerPoint presentation for parade last week. Well done to all our brilliant girls!
Snow peas are growing tall.
Our new wicking beds arrive soon and the Year 4 students will be putting these together for their technology unit.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
Chappy News
Holidays
I have been at Maleny State Primary School for a term now. I am really enjoying it. I feel privileged to be here working alongside the beautiful staff, families and community. Thank you for making me feel welcome. Breakfast club will continue next term. It is on a Wednesday morning from 8.15am outside the tuckshop. It is completely free so come along, adults and children alike and enjoy some free breakfast and conversation.
In my last Chappy News I wrote about having a break when it is needed. We are almost at our school holiday time again, it comes around fast! For students, school holidays are a good opportunity to have a break from classroom learning and the school routine. For parents and care givers it can give us an opportunity to spend more quality time with our children. I am looking forward to spending some time with my 10 year old and 11 year old without the pressure of routine. If you are fortunate enough to have a break with your children this holiday I encourage you to make the most of it. Get out there and explore the area, soak in nature and all it has to offer. Take time to connect with each other through play and conversation. Make memories for your family that will last. That’s my plan.

Next P&C Meeting 12 October @ 8.50am
Thank you from the Preps
A big thank you to our wonderful P&C who generously funded the Evergreen Theatre Company’s presentation of the Great Barrier Reef for our Prep students last week. This puppet show was both informative and entertaining. The children were enraptured from the moment they stepped under the seaweed archway and put on their imaginary diving gear. They were introduced to a spectacle of colourful sea creatures. They also learnt valuable lessons about caring for the reef which directly links to our HASS learning about caring for special places. We are very grateful for this experience.
