Listen More Not Spoken For
On Saturday I had the great pleasure of attending one of the many events that have been organised as part of this year’s Horizon Festival. This event organised by local indigenous artist and Maleny SS parent Libby Harward (Quandamooka) included all of our Year 5 and Year 6 Indigenous Students and River School Students. Our students have been completing workshops with Libby and teaching River School students how to listen to Country and speak back. The culmination of these workshops saw students take members of the public on guided listening tours of the Maleny Botanical Gardens on the weekend where phone apps (Echoes) and speakers were used for participants to hear our students describe the many different elements of each environment (Sky Country, Rock Country and Water Country) and how Country made them feel. It was wonderful to see such a large turnout to this event and the confidence of our students giving rise to their individual voices. A huge thank you to Libby, her son Harvey (who engineered the sound) and Kiara (art work) from Maleny State High School along with Alita from the River School and BJ Murphy who also participated and shared with students his knowledge of Jinibara culture with us. Students also enjoyed participating in printmaking and weaving activities.

Collection and Drop off of students of a Morning and Afternoon
Please note our only allowable drop off and collection points are from the front of the school (Bunya Street) for safety reasons and for the courtesy of our neighbouring properties.
A few parents have been asking students to jump the back fence and meet them at the back of the school behind the Bowls Club after school, or dropping them there of a morning. This practice is unacceptable and is not safe for students. It is unsupervised and when parents are late children are left in compromising positions that are unsafe.
I thank you for your compliance with our safe drop off and collection procedures.
2023 Classes
Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4
Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by Friday 21 October 2022 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2022. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels will have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and an incredible amount of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form. Any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered. Once classes are formulated changes will not be made. Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2023 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2023 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

Individual Learning Goals for Students
In the last Familygram I wrote briefly about students’ Individual Learning Goals, which each teacher establishes with each student in English. Goals are crucial to school success (and areas of life beyond the classroom). Learning how to set goals should be started when your child is young so he or she can develop goal-setting skills over the coming years, which is why every student from Prep through to Year 6 has an English Learning Goal. Teaching your child about goal setting at a young age can ensure he or she develops certain skills—whether they’re academic skills or life skills.
Setting and tracking goals helps your child learn important life skills such as planning, organization, and time management while also building communication skills, self-awareness, and confidence.
Creating and tracking goals is a great way to understand your child’s current academic standing and allows you to focus on determining direction for the future.
7 WAYS GOAL SETTING HELPS YOUR CHILD SUCCEED
- Provides A Clear Path To Success
When your child sets goals, it gives him or her steps to follow so tasks are completed according to importance. This allows more time and energy to be spent on the next step in achieving his or her goal rather than tackling tasks as they come up. - Teaches Time Management &
Preparedness
Having a clear plan also reduces procrastination. If your child knows exactly what he or she wants to achieve and knows the steps required to achieve it, there is less room for procrastination.
Setting effective goals also teaches your child organization, planning, and time management skills he or she can use in the classroom and at home. - Increases Motivation
If the big picture seems too overwhelming, breaking bigger goals into short-term goals, assists in separating long-term goals into smaller, more manageable steps so your child doesn’t get discouraged and quit. - Measures Progress
Setting clear goals makes it easier for your child to track his or her progress. Seeing how far he or she has come and how much is left to do motivates him or her to continue working toward (and achieving) goals. - Gives Focus & Purpose
Setting goals determines a clear pathway to success, allowing your child to focus on what needs to get done. This goes a long way to preventing your child from becoming overwhelmed, frustrated, or discouraged. It lessens feelings of being disheartened and encourages your child to spend time on activities that contribute to his or her goals. - Boosts Self-Confidence
When your child starts making progress toward achieving his or her goals, it’s a big confidence boost! Your child’s confidence in his or her abilities is important for self-image in the long run, helping him or her tackle future goals with less anxiety. With that new-found confidence, your child can continue to set more ambitious goals. - Provides Challenges
If your child seems uninterested in a certain subject or school in general, set a small goal to work toward. This will keep him or her engaged in the classroom and encourages your child to think of new areas he or she can continue to improve.
Ask your child what their Individual Learning Goal is and ask them how they are going.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Rocket challenge finishes this fortnight, all of our students are working hard to fill the rocket.
New SMART GOAL - ROCKET Challenge! “BE YOUR BEST SELF”
What a fabulous focus for the next 4 weeks. This new focus encompasses so many other strategies we have already learnt such as: Bounce Back, Make Good Choices, Big Effort Big Results, I Can, I Will, I’ll Have a Go, Leaders Inspire and Manners Matter.
What is YOUR best self? We can ask ourselves:
- WHO ARE YOU?
- WHAT MAKES YOU "YOU"?
- WHAT DO YOU DO WELL?
- WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF?
- WHAT DO OTHERS LIKE ABOUT YOU?
When we focus on being our best self we also think about:
- Goal is to do your best
- Looking at yourself
- Comparing what you have done in the past to the present
- Focus on YOU
When students show 4 Be behaviour in the classroom and other learning environments, the teacher/ adult will ask students to put a coloured ball in the bucket for their classroom. On parade each class will empty their bucket into the rocket. Hopefully by week 8 the rocket will be full and the whole school will get 20 mins free play!! Good luck everyone, we are loving seeing your best selves.

Prep A & Prep B
Question of the day
Each morning, as they arrive at school, the Preps look forward to reading the “Question of the Day”. This all began with our Maths learning about collecting data and has turned into a daily routine. It’s awesome listening to the children using their decoding skills to read the question and then later discussing what they find out about each other. What a great way for us to compare numbers!
Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Jenny Jenkinson (Prep B)
Year 2A
Busy Times ahead
2A are well on our way in looking closely at Information Reports about a variety of animals found in Australia and around the world. We are working closely with note taking and using these to make some great compound sentences and extended noun groups. Skimming and Scanning is our current reading strategy. Do you know what a cut away is or a closeup?
Math is focussing on Calendars, the seasons, months, days of the week and so on. In Science we have completed our seed experiments and are amazed at how our mealworms are changing. They are well on their way in the pupa stage, beetles are next!
Country Fair
Notes have gone home asking if any volunteers are available for a time slot during the few hours. Please return these and we will slot you in. Thank you in advance for your help. We are definitely looking forward to this event!
The spelling bee has been postponed so hopefully that will occur in the next few weeks as well. Premier’s Reading Challenge Forms are also due so if they have been completed could they be sent into the class. Thanks to all the students this term, it has been busy as usual but they are all making great choices and progress and we are working on filling our rocket, ready for some reward time. Until next time, take care and only 3 weeks to go until the end of term!
Sarsha Anthony, Tam Johnston (2A)
Year 2/3C
2/3C have just begun our unit on informative text and have been extremely excited to select an Australian animal to conduct research on. We are currently working on the reading strategy of summarising; this allows students to find the main points from a text and create simple and compound sentences from this information. For our assessment students will create a poster with all the information they have researched. The class goal for this piece is to use topic specific vocabulary and noun groups in our writing.
We have enjoyed doing fractions with pizzas and pop art as well as vertical addition and subtraction in maths. We have moved onto measurement this week and have been focusing on length. We will be moving onto capacity and weight.
We are looking forward to the Spelling Bee and will be in touch with a revised date.
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to be part of our hotdog stall. Your time is genuinely appreciated. We still have a few times available, please email Mrs Cox at ocox11@eq.edu.au if you can help us out!

Balance
We are in quite a busy time of term. Working in schools for the last 5 years I have noticed that in term three, especially toward the end of term, people at school get tired. This includes students, school staff and even Chaplains (yes indeed). As parents/care givers we also can feel worn down with the pace of life and trying to balance it all and give our children the best start in life. I am impressed that Maleny State School prioritises personal wellbeing both in the student body as well as staff. Students can find their inspiration from academic as well as social and emotional pools of knowledge. Students are also encouraged to uncover and pursue their personal gifts and talents through sport, music, language and visual arts. Students are encouraged to have brain breaks, to learn inside and outside of the classrooms and in nature. What a great opportunity our students have to balance their learning with play and discovering new things about themselves and their world.
How are we as adults at balance though? As life gets busier leading up to the end of the year are we finding time to balance work with play or indeed balance time for ourselves with time for others? This balance can be hard to find sometimes and it is different for each person. However I encourage you (and me) to find something that brings you joy and incorporate it into your week. It might be exercise, socialising, a hobby or volunteering. If you are an introvert you might like to prioritise a little time alone. There is a strong correlation between proper rest, relaxation and productivity. If you feel content with your life balance you are more likely to function better. So go out and find that thing that brings you joy, it is good for you.
Chappy Chris’ quote for the day, as Dolly Parton says “Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”.
