Principal’s Report

Emergency - Tuckshop Volunteers Urgently Required

Our current enrolment is 396 students, our parent tuckshop volunteers total is 3 (all 3 are parents of Year 6 students who will be heading to High School next year.)

It is currently unsustainable to keep the tuckshop operating for 3 days a week with current low numbers of volunteers. Our Convenor Gunnar and assistants Akiko and Jo along with our present volunteers are doing a tremendous job, however with tuckshop orders increasing and volunteer levels declining I along with the P&C are concerned that this situation cannot continue.

We require 6 volunteers a week to operate, 2 volunteers each day (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday). 24 volunteers in total would allow volunteers to work just 1 shift a month. Volunteers are required from 9:00am until 11:30am.

Please respond immediately by clicking the link below if you can assist us through this Volunteering Crisis which is common across many organisations at present.

Musical Talent on Show

On Friday night 11 of our Instrumental students performed a piece of music (they wrote with Topology) with the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra in front of a 300 plus crowd at Montville in a family friendly event as part of the Inaugural Rangebow Festival. This was a wonderful opportunity that students were able to be a part of through our Instrumental Music Program. Other schools involved included Maleny State High School, Montville State School and Glenview State School. Our students were simply amazing and warmly welcomed by the crowd. A Big thank you to Nathan Hill for preparing our students and to all parents that braved the rain to work on the combined schools BBQ stall and those that attended to support our students.

From the Deputy Principal

Class ‘Learning Walls’, ‘Third Teacher Spaces’ and ‘Individual Student Goals’

For a number of years Maleny State School has focussed on the teaching of specific aspects in English and Literacy, such as Reading and Writing. As part of our journey of unpacking how to best teach these aspects, we have worked on developing our pedagogy and resources that assist our explicit teaching. A part of our journey over the last two years has been the development of ‘Learning Walls’ and ‘Third Teacher’ spaces. In each year level classroom teachers have put aside at least one area as a Learning Wall which forms part of their ‘Third Teacher’ space.

The classroom space or learning environment is the third teacher. The first teacher is the parent, the second teacher is the teacher in the classroom, but the third teacher is the learning space and how the learning space is designed to support the students in the classroom is very important. The space should be the students own as well as the teacher’s space.

Looking at the walls in the classroom the teacher needs to be thinking, of student voice. The spaces that our students learn in must be co-constructed with what’s important for the students and the teacher. The walls of the classroom should show what students are thinking about and/or how they need to think in order to complete a particular task.

The walls of the classroom should enable the students to answer the 5 Questions:

5 Questions to ask students…

  1. What are you learning? Why?
  2. How are you doing?
  3. How do you know?
  4. How can you improve?
  5. Where do you go for help?

Each teachers’ Learning Walls and Third Teacher spaces are currently devoted to English so there will be evidence of assessment literacy eg anchor charts, word walls, examples of text structures that are the supports for students to use in the classroom. These have been co-constructed with students and are really helpful for students to use to identify their next steps for learning and their learning goals.

Each student at Maleny State School has a Learning Goal which is set up in a similar way from Prep through to Year 6, in a green folder. For each unit in English students will develop and reflect on a goal. Mr Byrne, Mr Heiniger and myself visit students every week and reflect with students on their learning and their goals. It is a special time for the three of us to have with students and see how they are progressing with their learning.

Ask your child’s teacher about their Learning Wall/Third Teacher space and your child’s individual learning goal. The main idea behind the Learning Wall/Third Teacher space and having students set an individual learning goal, is that it is set up to assist all children with their learning ie not just for a student who is at or below a ‘C’ level, it will also extend students ie from a ‘B’ to an ‘A’ or beyond the ‘A’ level.

The following 5 questions will also assist parents in engaging with their child’s learning. If a child can easily answer these questions their understanding of the learning process is clearly understood, if a child struggles to answer the questions then it is clear that the child is having some difficulty in understanding what they are learning.

  1. What did you learn today?
  2. How did you do?
  3. What did you do if you didn’t understand?
  4. How can you improve on your learning?
  5. What are you most proud of?

To find out how you can support your child’s understanding of what they are learning a conversation can then be had with your child’s teacher so that a team approach can be used to support your child. We acknowledge that you are their first teacher and we are their second teacher - and working together will always be the most effective response in any child’s learning journey.

P&C News

The 2022 Maleny Country Fair is set for Friday 9th September at 3.30pm!

Come celebrate 125 years of primary schooling in Maleny and surrounds and join in the fun being offered by the Conondale & Maleny State Schools and The River School on our School’s Seniors Oval.

With rides, games, food, beverages, stalls, community groups, a packed entertainment program and fireworks, there is something for everyone.

The event will be cashless for the games, food and beverage stalls. As these stalls will be operated by three different Schools, it has been decided to use a common Ticket system across all stalls and have one cashier (located in the Shed) where cash, cards and mobile devices can be used to purchase Stall Tickets on the day.

Similarly, admission to rides will require either a Wristband (unlimited access) or Rides Tickets (single use only) that will be available at full prices on the day.

Stall Tickets and heavily discounted Rides Wristbands can now be pre-purchased through the online Store and can either be delivered to your child’s classroom or collected at the Admission Gate on the day (you will need to show your purchase receipt at the time of collection). These are only available until 3pm on Wednesday 7th September – so hurry and don’t miss out!

For those families who purchased Stalls Tickets and Rides Wristbands last year, these will be honoured in full and will be delivered to your child’s 2022 classroom on Thursday 8th September.

Where families made purchases under the name of their oldest child and this child has completed Year 6 last year, these will be available for collection at the Admission gate.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

New SMART GOAL - ROCKET Challenge! “BE YOUR BEST SELF”

What a fabulous focus for the next 4 weeks. This new focus encompasses so many other strategies we have already learnt such as: Bounce Back, Make Good Choices, Big Effort Big Results, I Can, I Will, I’ll Have a Go, Leaders Inspire and Manners Matter.

What is YOUR best self? We can ask ourselves:

  • WHO ARE YOU?
  • WHAT MAKES YOU "YOU"?
  • WHAT DO YOU DO WELL?
  • WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF?
  • WHAT DO OTHERS LIKE ABOUT YOU?

When we focus on being our best self we also think about:

  • Goal is to do your best
  • Looking at yourself
  • Comparing what you have done in the past to the present
  • Focus on YOU

When students show 4 Be behaviour in the classroom and other learning environments, the teacher/ adult will ask students to put a coloured ball in the bucket for their classroom. On parade each class will empty their bucket into rocket. When the rocket is full, the whole school will get 20 mins free play!! Good luck everyone, we are already loving seeing your best selves.

PBL Team

Year 4A & 4B

Learning About the Past

The Year 4 students have been busy studying different perspectives from The First Fleet. The students have been reading through a variety of historical recounts. We have been making improvements to exemplars to enhance the writing and to make sure criteria is being met for each level. Last week each child chose who they wanted to be either a convict child, a surgeon’s child or an Indigenous child from the Eora People (Sydney Cove). They have started planning their own historical recount and have brainstormed the senses to help include detail for the reader. One criteria that must be incorporated into their writing so that language used must be from the time that their story is set.

We have been reading a selection of short stories and two texts by Jackie French called Thomas Appleby and Nanberry. They are both very descriptive and have helped the students understand events that occurred during the late 1770’s.

Last week we looked at jobs that the convict women would have done in the colony. 4A made bread the old fashion way and we could see that it was a long process. We were all involved in the kneading, and it was great to see the dough grow in the warmth of the sun.

Our loaf of bread was perfect and enjoyed by us all.

In Science we have been investigating the properties of ochre when mixed with different binders such as water, pva glue, egg yolk and oil. We looked at the smudge resistance when the ochre dried with each of the binders.

In HASS we are investigating the natural and Human features of Africa and South America.

In Maths we have started looking at equivalent fractions, proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers.

In 4B, we have been working on adding different language features to our Historical Recounts as well as studying the novel “Eliza Bird, Child Convict”. In Maths we have been looking at different representations of fractions as well as investigating different ways to collect measurement data. In Science we have been learning about setting up and completing fair tests when looking at the properties of different materials.

Year 5A, 5B & 5C

Science

This term the Year 5 classes are investigating light. Here are some of our investigations: Periscopes, reflection using mirrors and shadows. All of these will help us to complete our assessment in the next couple of weeks where we need to create a maze in shoe box that uses mirrors to transfer light from one side of the maze to the other....to answer the question – Can light Bend? (hint – it's a trick!)

Leadership Passports

Year 5 students are currently completing tasks in their passports so that they are eligible for next year’s leadership roles. These passports serve as evidence of service to the school through representative activities like band and sport and volunteering jobs like sports shed and flag duties. Students need to have examples signed off by different teachers. Next term the students wishing to nominate for leadership roles will need to submit this passport along with a short piece of writing about themselves. Good luck to all those students who have already started undertaking duties and collecting signatures.

More Additions for the Garden

The garden club members have just finished a new ‘I Spy’ sign for the garden area for classes to enjoy.

Our lovely groundsman Mark, put our new compost bin together for us.

Our worms are very happy in their worm towers.

Our worms are all very happy in their new homes and we were excited to see some strawberries in our wicking bed this week. Our snowpeas are growing well also.

Lisa from Welcome To Maleny dropped off a picture to the garden club members to show them the finished welcome sign for refugees on the Sunshine Coast. It was very special to be a part of this project.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Community

I am amazed and thankful for our school and our community. We have received generous donations of product from Maleny Dairies, Maleny Bakery and Maleny Woolworths for our breakfast club. We have received many grocery donations from school families and staff members as well. This has meant that our students have the opportunity to have a healthy breakfast to start their day.

Over the past four weeks I have also met and chatted with many of our school volunteers, whether they be mentors, tuckshop workers or on the P&C. Each volunteer brings their own story, experience and talents to support our school which is wonderful. I have seen how a successful community exists due to individuals volunteering to give a little time to help others out.

I encourage you to seriously think about volunteering here at Maleny State School. Why? Did you know that helping others actually makes you feel good! Yes it’s true. It gives you a sense of achievement, belonging and purpose. I know that the school is looking for volunteers. I encourage you to give it a go. Speak to Ms Desley at the front office or one of our lovely staff members.

Chappy Chris’ Quote for the day: “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”– Martin Luther King, Jr.
