Principal’s Report
Welcome back to Term 3
It has been an exciting start to the term with BJ Murphy, Jinibara cultural man and parent of our school, conducting a Welcome to Country at the entrance of our rainforest last Wednesday. Uncle BJ sang a welcome song with our Year 6 Indigenous leaders and shared stories related to Jinibara ways of the past. In difficult weather conditions, BJ also was able to demonstrate traditional fire making and explain why smoke from eucalyptus leaves is used in smoking ceremonies.
It was great to see such a large turnout of parents and community members that were also entertained by our Year 1 and Prep students who sang and performed while our Year 6 students played the ukulele. A number of parents took the opportunity to walk through our rainforest which is surrounded by the Obi Obi Creek where we have sighted platypus swimming 3 days in a row. It is a unique and amazing resource that we have on our school grounds and one that we are looking to conduct future working bees to ensure this area continues to thrive and not be hampered by non-native weeds. This week we were successful with a Council Grant application that will train us in weed control techniques and management in this important environment.

NAIDOC Week - Welcome to Country
Welcome Chappy Chris
Please give a warm Maleny welcome to our new chaplain Christine Boughen – ‘Chappy Chris’. Chris has a wealth of knowledge and has worked in the past as a child welfare officer, social worker and teacher aide.
Chappy Chris will be working each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this term. Chris will be restarting our Breakfast club on a Wednesday morning and would very much like the support of volunteers to assist her in providing this service to our students. If you can assist please email Chris or contact the office who will pass on your details.
If you would like to be on our Chaplaincy Committee please contact Chris or myself as we would very much appreciate your support.
Email Chris on: cboug13@eq.edu.au

Hi all My name is Chris Boughen and I am so happy to be your school Chaplain. My family has recently moved back to the Blackall Range from Logan where I was working in a student well-being role. I grew up here on the range and love being a part of this community again. I am a Mum to two children, an 11 and 10 year old. Our family love the beach, camping and all things nature. My training and background are in Social Work. I have worked in a school context for the past 5 years. I love working alongside students, school staff and families to help with their social, emotional and/or spiritual goals. I am really enjoying getting to know the students and staff here at Maleny State School and look forward to meeting family and community members in the days to come. When you see me at drop off and/or pick up come and say hello and have a chat, that’d be great. |
Maleny IGA Community Benefits Club (CBC) helps create flexible computer lab space
In 2020 via an Education Queensland School Refresh Project, one of our school building blocks was upgraded to modernise the learning spaces. One of the spaces in that block was our computer lab. This space previously housed 26 computers, all lining the walls on built in benches. Whilst the space served its purpose for many years it needed a new, more modern and flexible design to better suit the learning of today. Unfortunately, the project did not include furniture.
Thanks to the Maleny IGA Community Benefits Club (CBC), Maleny State School has been able to outfit the space with all new flexible furniture. With new chairs, mobile whiteboard tables, teacher desk and teacher standing station, it is now a wonderful space to teach and learn in. The flexible tables alone make the space a pleasure in which to work. Easy to reconfigure at a moment's notice, allowing collaborative work, teacher conferencing or focused taskwork, the space is so much more versatile than before.
I would like to thank the Maleny IGA Community Benefits Club (CBC) for enhancing our technology space and making it a pleasure to work and learn in.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rob and Sam Outridge for the continued support and commitment that they have provided to our school and community over many years. I wish them both all the best in their future endeavours.

Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 10 August – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting Wednesday 10 August at 8:50 am. This meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online.
Our P&C is achieving some wonderful outcomes and welcomes all new-comers to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body. With our new OSHC up and running by this meeting our focus will be on organising our Country Fair on 9 September.
Have a Magic Week in Maleny.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Responsible – “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths”
Welcome back everyone. We have started off Term 3 with a Be Responsible Rule for weeks one and two, with the Buzz Phrase “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths”.
This Means:
- Moving around the school in a quiet, respectful manner.
- Keeping to the left when walking on paths or using the stairs.
- Following adult directions.
- Modelling sensible behaviour.
- Lining up quietly.
This helps all our students be respectful during transition times and when moving around our school at lunch or play times.
Have a great fortnight everyone!

Year 4A & 4B
Our Journey Through Time
In English, the Year 4 classes have started focusing on The First Fleet and looking at the different perspectives of white settlement from the Indigenous people as well as the convicts and settlers. Over the next few weeks, we will be reading a variety of historical recounts and the children will be required to write their own historical recount as a convict child, a surgeon’s child or an Indigenous child at the time. They will then be presenting their recount in role in a spoken presentation to the class.

In Science we have started our unit called "Properties Matter". 4A explored a mystery material and used words like flexible, stretchy, opaque and mouldable to describe its properties.
NAIDOC Week
The Year 4 classes have been focusing on the Jinibara people and other neighbouring clans of this area. We have looked at different traditions before white settlement and have researched the importance of the Bunya Nut Festival. We went for a walk through the rainforest and had to find different things on our walk. We were also learning Jinibara language. We were very fortunate to see a Mewar (Platypus).
We loved our Welcome To Country from BJ Murphy. It was very special to share this ceremony with our whole school and many parents.
In 4B, we have been getting back into the swing of things after holidays by practising our classroom routines and procedures. We have begun looking at the features of historical recounts in English as well as working with mixed fractions in Maths. In Science, we have been discussing the properties of different materials and we investigated a “Mystery Substance”. We thoroughly enjoyed participating in the whole-school Welcome to Country ceremony on Wednesday afternoon and we have also learnt about the Bunya Nut Festival as part of NAIDOC Week activities.

Stop Motion Animation
At the end of Term 2, the Year 5 students broke into groups to shoot their own stop motion animation. The assessment involved students creating a storyboard with an ethical dilemma and a resolution to that problem. Students collaboratively planned their stories and then used the i-motion app on the i-pads to record their story. Students enjoyed the task and created some great productions. Here are some photos of the process.

NAIDOC Week Activities
As part of our NAIDOC activities in the first week of term, students researched indigenous warriors. During the research we discovered some interesting facts. After students researched the warrior in pairs, they created their own $50 notes featuring the warrior and some important details in a pictorial form.

War on Waste
Unpacking All Our New Equipment for the Garden and Classrooms from our Organic Waste Grant.
This week the students from the garden club have been unpacking our new Bokashi bins (compost bins) for each classroom and some of the students have been visiting classrooms to explain how to use them.
In addition to this we have three new worm farms and four worm towers that we also put in the garden area. The Garden club members gave one worm farm to the Prep students to have in their eating area.
We have been busy burying our worm towers in our garden beds and filling them up with worms.

We will now be feeding some of our compost to the worms to enjoy.

Garden Club Members Complete a New I Spy Sign For The Rainforest
This week we are celebrating NAIDOC week and many of the Garden Club members are feeling very proud of their new sign for the rainforest. The sign has been used as an activity for all classes to read and refer to as well as learn some of the language of the Jinibara People.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
