Principal’s Report

Tremendous Term Two

Thank you to all staff, students, parents and community members for your support this term. Our universal level of student behaviour has been excellent, and after reading student reports for most of this weekend it is clearly reflected in not only student effort but in academic results. Please take the time to celebrate your child’s successes first and then collaboratively make a plan to grow areas that could assist your child’s future progress. It only needs to be the smallest plan focusing on one specific area (e.g. reading) once a week for a short amount of time.

The value gained has a multiplying effect of firstly your child seeing that their parents value education, secondly that they are getting additional positive attention from you, thirdly that they are developing the skills of reflecting, self-evaluating, making a plan and putting it into action to achieve a goal (arguably an essential life skill) and of course achieving success.

Hopefully you will find some down time over the next two weeks to enjoy some fun and restful times with your family, certainly it is a goal of mine.

Maleny Out of Hours School Care

Introducing our Director of Maleny OSHC.

My name is Emma and I am looking forward to joining the Maleny State School community in Term 3 as the Inaugural OSHC Director. I have worked in the outside school hours care industry for a little over 5 years and offer experience in providing educational experiences in line with the National Quality Standard, Early Years Learning Framework and My Time Our Place Framework. I am committed to providing the children in my care an environment that is inclusive, safe, nurturing and supportive. I am extremely honoured to have the opportunity to provide a positive and enriching environment for the children at Maleny State School. I look forward to meeting you all and welcoming you to our OSHC family 😊

Kind Regards,
Emma
oshc@malenyss.eq.edu.au

If you have not yet registered an interest in putting your name on a waiting list for your child(ren) to attend Maleny OSHC service, please do so by completing the pre-enrolment registration form.

In addition, families will need to download the App to connect to OWNA to manage their enrolments, book desired sessions, allow Child Care Subsidy linkage, communicate with Educators, etc. A family ‘cheat sheet’ has been provided for how to use the App. To download, choose one of the following: iOS App or Android App.

For the Educators to be allowed to also use the App, families will need to complete a consent form for each child and email it to: oshc@malenyss.eq.edu.au .

We are almost ready to open our online enrolments (through the App and parent portal) and families who have completed all of the above will get direct notification through the App.

For more information, please visit the link below:

If you want to be involved in the development of this service by families for families, please request access to this private Facebook group: MOSCH families and carers

Instrumental Beginner Band Workshop and Concert

This Wednesday 22 June we will be hosting (in the hall) the Instrumental Beginner Cluster Band Workshop (Montville SS, Glenview SS, Conondale SS and Maleny SS). Wavell State High School Touring Concert Band will also be performing a special one-off concert from 9:30am until 10:00am for our whole school. The Beginner Workshop will conclude with a parent concert from beginner band students at 2:15pm.

Junior Sports and Senior Athletics Day this Week

Our Junior sports day will be held this Thursday from 9:00am until 11:00am. Our Senior Sports Day will commence at 11:40am on Thursday and continue on Friday, culminating with a short assembly to announce the winning Sports House. Please come along and support your children. Programs for both events have been previously emailed home with approximate times of events included.

Semester One School Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed on Wednesday this week. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher. There will be no formal parent/teacher meetings this term as we have not long ago offered them. However, you are welcome to request and interview with your child’s teacher at any time.

Purchase your new School Jumper and School Hat

Our Uniform Shop is stocked up with new polar fleece zip up jackets and pull overs, shorts, skorts, socks and hats. No doubt with cool weather coming these jackets will sell quickly. Students without the correct school jumper will always be offered a clean second-hand jumper from the office until they have their own. We ask parents to wash and return these after use to school. A reminder that all students require a school hat, every day at lunch time and for outside lessons.

Second hand uniforms and excess stock can be ordered through the link below:

https://www.malenypandc.com.au/

Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 13 July – We need You!

New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting Wednesday the 13 July at 2:50 pm. This meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online access.

Our P&C is achieving some wonderful outcomes and welcomes all new comers to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.

Have a Magic Holiday in Maleny.
John 

Semester 1 Student Reports Emailed

Semester 1 Reports will be emailed to parents/caregivers on Wednesday 22nd June. We remind parents that OneSchool which is the Department of Education’s Statewide Management System is set up in a way that it will only email out to parents whose emails are recorded as the primary carers in the system. Usually these emails are provided at enrolment. If these email details have changed please contact the Office.

To receive your child’s report please add Application.ONESCHOOL@qed.qld.gov.au (mailto:Application.ONESCHOOL@qed.qld.gov.au) to your list of safe senders to ensure report card emails aren’t sent to the Junk folder. Please note, the school’s email address won’t show up as the sender.

If you have any questions about your child’s report please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.

Paula Heiniger – Deputy Principal

Lost Property

Thank you for naming and looking after your belongings.

Lost property is checked weekly and named items are returned to their owners. Last Friday, Miss Mandy returned over 20 items to their owners but there are quite a few things remaining and, if not collected by the end of the term, will be washed/cleaned and donated to local charities. Please ask your children to have a look, or yourself, in the alcove next to the Year 4 eating area.

Now would be a great time to write your name on your jumper as there are another 15 jumpers currently in lost property that have no owners!

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

ESafety Check-in BEFORE the school holidays

With the holidays fast approaching it is a great time for all parents and carers to do a self-check on their knowledge, skills and understanding around eSafety as it relates to your own children. Whilst the Internet and digital devices can be a great resource and provide many hours of relaxation and enjoyment, they do have risks which need to be understood and managed.

A site we have shared many times before is the Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner which has a range of resources for parents on the challenging and ever-changing digital devices and Internet. The site itself is easy to navigate and showcases aged-based information to support the very youngest to the very oldest in our communities.

mailto:https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

The Parents section is filled with lots of information around eSafety. For example:

It is well worth the time for all parents and carers to update their knowledge and skills. Being prepared with the knowledge and skills helps to prevent so many issues kids may go through.

Book Fair

Thank you to everyone who made our Book Fair a success again. Whilst we are still working out all the final figure, I am sure we will have sold a large pile of books to families at school. This helps us to get free books for our school borrowing collection as we get to keep stock from the Book Fair to an amount based on the total sales to parents. In previous years we have managed to keep approximately $1000 worth of books. This year it looks like we are on our way to doing a similar amount again. Thank you.

Sora eBook Digital Library

A reminder before the school holidays that the school pays for all students to get access to the eBook digital library for Education Queensland. All students (and their parents) need is:

  1. Download the Sora app (on Andoid or iOS) or to visit the Sora website on a computer - https://soraapp.com/welcome
  2. Search for and select the Education Queensland Library.
  3. Log in with your child’s MIS-ID (school username). Once done you can search and select books from thousands of ebooks, audiobooks and read-to-me books in the collection. Prep – Year 3 children have access to an age appropriate select of titles based on their year level. Students in Years 4-9 have access to an expanded selection.

For more details on how to access Sora visit the link below -

https://malenyss.eq.edu.au/calendar-and-news/news/welcome-to-another-year-of-reading

If unsure of your child’s MIS-ID school username please contact your class teacher or Mr Greig in the Innovation Centre/Library. If you are having any access issues please contact Mr Greig so he can check your account setup.

Have a wonderful school holiday reading! Of course, you don’t have to wait till then to get started.

Adrian Greig- Innovation Teacher

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

I choose to Defuse

This fortnight’s new BUZZ phrase is a BE SAFE rule, “I choose to Defuse”.

For our students, this means:

  • I say STOP if someone or something is upsetting me.
  • I WALK away from the situation to a safe place.
  • I TALK to someone I can trust.
  • I CONTROL myself and keep my COOL.
  • I can solve problems in a calm manner

How to help

Across the school we help students think about:

  • What is a peaceful resolution?
  • Providing students with strategies to use when faced with a social/emotional problem. (Count backwards, breathing, have a drink, go for a walk)
  • What happens if I don’t keep my cool! What does it look like? Is it appropriate? How does it affect others? Would others’ think it is COOL?

Enjoy the holidays.

Glasshouse District Cross Country Trial & Sunshine Coast Regional Trials

Maleny State school took a team of 10 students to St Michael’s College to compete at the Glasshouse District Cross Country. Maleny finished 6th overall and had some terrific results across all senior age groups. In Particular, Conor who finished first in 11yr boys age group. This was a tremendous result. Furthermore, Conor went on to win at the Sunshine Coast Regional trials finishing first giving him the title of the fastest 11 yr old, 3km runner on the Sunshine Coast.

Mark West Cup

Mr Corkin has been extremely busy this term training our Year 5 & 6 students to compete at the annual Mark West Cup in Beerwah. Students from all abilities trained tirelessly at lunch times to be ready for the competition. Maleny entered two teams into the round robin competition with the winner moving on to the next round. Maleny played in the grand final against Baringa State School with the score at full time 4 tries a piece, ending in a draw. We are extremely proud of all students who competed in the competition and thank Mr Corkin for his outstanding work in organising this event.

Junior and Senior Sports Day

Community Sport Acknowledgements

BMX

Eva has been extremely busy on the track while racing at top speed on her BMX. Currently Eva has placed a 3rd with the potential to take 2nd in SQ (South QLD). This is not an easy sport however she trains hard and has a great attitude to the competition on track. All going well, Eva should receive a Q plate at the State titles coming up later this year and this is a very prestigious honour. We wish Eva the best of luck and look forward to following her achievements.

Rugby Union

Maleny State school are proud to announce that Sonny has been selected as a part of the 23-man squad in the under 12s Sunshine Coast Stingrays squad, in the SQ Rugby Championships against Darling Downs and Gold Coast. This selection is a terrific result for Sonny and reflects his hard work and dedication.

The Preps have been enjoying the sunshine as they participate in the daily obstacle course set up by Mrs J. Beyond having fun and using energy, the obstacle course builds stamina, coordination and gross motor skills.

Sharing Stories

The Year 4’s visited us this week to share the stories they have been writing in class. We LOVED listening to these fantastic stories. Thanks Year 4!

Year 2A

Ending on a High note

We have just said a sad goodbye to our wonderful Prac teacher Miss Hay. She has been a wonderful addition to our classroom over the last 4 weeks and we will miss her greatly. She presented all students with a kind and thoughtful gift and we look forward to her visiting us next semester.

We are looking forward to our last few weeks where we are finishing off our writing task and our preference for the Big Bad Shark or the Big Friendly Wolf. Our Science, HASS and Art units have also concluded so we are looking forward to completing some great activities toward the end of our busy semester, this includes Pyjama Day and Junior Athletics.

Thanks to all our parent helpers in class this semester your help has been greatly appreciated. We hope you have a safe and happy, well-deserved holiday and we are excited to see you in Term 3.

Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain (2A)

Year 2/3C

We are almost halfway through the year!

This term we have completed persuasive writing tasks to try and convince Mrs Cox to purchase a classroom pet. In maths we have started learning our times tables and completed units on time and money. We performed Pig the Pug puppet shows and completed the unit on materials and matter in science. However, the most exciting task by far was building our pin ball machines! It has been lovely to watch students gain an understanding of forces and use their creativity to build some amazing pin ball machines.

Remember - activities still to come at the end of our busy semester include our Junior Athletics.

I hope you all have a safe, enjoyable, and well-deserved holiday and cannot wait to see you in Term 3.

Olivia Cox (2/3C)

Year 3A & 3B

Welcome to the end of Term 2

How quickly time passes. It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of second term and what a busy academic term it has been. The students have worked with utmost effort to complete their assessments. We are very pleased with their co-operation as we’ve had to deal with many absences and catch-up sessions, also many shorter school weeks.

Congratulations to our students for their wonderful efforts during NAPLAN. They approached the tasks calmly and gave it their best.

Don’t forget to update your Premier’s Reading Challenge recording sheet. Make it a part of your daily reading program. It's a great thrill for the students to receive that certificate later next term.

The athletics carnival is on Thursday 23 June - a great conclusion to the term! Make sure your child has their correct coloured sports shirt. Competition is fierce and we don’t want points being allocated to the wrong Sports House.

For the start of next term please check to see if your child has coloured pencils, sharpener, eraser, writing pencils, glue stick etc as many children have, or are close to running out. They will need their fine point, black markers for art activities and assessment tasks. Many children were keen to use them earlier on and they have exhausted their supply.

Shelly and I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout this term. I do hope you are able to wind down and enjoy the holidays that are fast approaching. Take care and we look forward to arriving back refreshed for another busy term 3.
