Principal’s Report
Cross Curriculum Priorities in the Australian Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum identifies three key priority areas that give students the tools and language to engage with and better understand their world at a range of levels. The priorities provide national, regional and global dimensions which will enrich the curriculum through development of considered and focused content that fits naturally within learning areas. They enable the delivery of learning area content at the same time as developing knowledge, understanding and skills relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia and/or Sustainability.
Incorporation of the priorities will encourage conversations between students, teachers and the wider community. Cross-curriculum priorities are only addressed through learning areas and do not constitute curriculum on their own, as they do not exist outside of learning areas.
Exploring our local Indigenous Culture
Our Year 4 and Prep students enjoyed a visit by Jinibara elder Jason Murphy on Monday 30 May during Reconciliation Week. Jason guided our Year 4 classes through the school’s rainforest, teaching us about the close connection between Maleny’s First Nation people and Country. We learnt that animals and plants have to be cared for to ensure their sustainability and how tools were crafted and used by the Jinibara people.

Jason also yarned with each of our Prep classes about the Glasshouse Mountain stories and how they teach families to care for each other. The children enjoyed seeing Jason demonstrate how the grasstree flower stalk and hibiscus base are rubbed together to create fire.
Tazzie, one of our Prep students, inspired by Jason's visit, wrote, "Jason told Prep that Tibrogargan is the dad of the mountains.'

2022 begins the United Nation’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages which recognises the importance of protecting, revitalising, preserving and promoting Indigenous languages around the world. Maleny State School and our P&C are collaborating with JPAC (Jinibara People Aboriginal Corporation) to create resources for our school. Our teachers are enjoying learning from elders and look forward to incorporating more local Indigenous perspectives into our classroom activities to enrich learning for all students and positively impacting the Maleny community. This initiative is proudly supported by the Queensland Government through the Indigenous Languages Grants program.
Please join us for NAIDOC celebrations in the afternoon of Wednesday 13 July.
Semester One School Reports
Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.
Purchase your new School Jumper and School Hat
Our Uniform Shop is stocked up with new polar fleece jackets. No doubt with cool weather coming these jackets will sell quickly. Students without the correct school jumper will always be offered a clean second-hand jumper from the office until they have their own. We ask parents to wash and return these after use to school. A reminder that all students require a school hat every day at lunch time and for outside lessons.
Second hand uniforms and excess stock can be ordered through the link below:

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Australian Curriculum
In the Australian Curriculum, students develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school and in their lives beyond school. ICT capability involves students learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment.
To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, at home, at work and in their communities. Information and communication technologies are fast and automated, interactive and multimodal, and they support the rapid communication and representation of knowledge to many audiences and its adaptation in different contexts. They transform the ways that students think and learn and give them greater control over how, where and when they learn.
The nature and scope of ICT capability is not fixed, but is responsive to ongoing technological developments. This is evident in the emergence of advanced internet technology over the past few years and the resulting changes in the ways that students construct knowledge and interact with others.
Students develop capability in using ICT for tasks associated with information access and management, information creation and presentation, problem-solving, decision-making, communication, creative expression and empirical reasoning. This includes conducting research, creating multimedia information products, analysing data, designing solutions to problems, controlling processes and devices, and supporting computation while working independently and in collaboration with others.
Students develop knowledge, skills and dispositions around ICT and its use, and the ability to transfer these across environments and applications. They learn to use ICT with confidence, care and consideration, understanding its possibilities, limitations and impact on individuals, groups and communities.
Organising elements for ICT Capability
Applying social and ethical protocols and practices when using ICT Investigating with ICT Creating with ICT Communicating with ICT Managing and operating ICT |
ICT capability supports and enhances student learning across all areas of the curriculum. Students develop and apply ICT knowledge, skills and appropriate social and ethical protocols and practices to investigate, create and communicate, as well as developing their ability to manage and operate ICT to meet their learning needs. All learning areas provide the content and contexts within which students develop and apply the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that comprise ICT capability. However, it is more explicit and foregrounded in the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
SMART GOAL - The PBL Rocket is back!
We are challenging all students to “First Time Every Time” to earn a ball during weeks 5 - 8. Each class has a bucket and enjoy emptying the bucket into the rocket on Assembly. Once the rocket is full, the whole school gets 20 minutes extra play time. So far, all students are doing an amazing job filling up buckets!
First Time Every Time
That means:
- Doing what you are asked by an adult immediately
- Caring for all property
- Following adult instructions
- Respecting the right of other students to learn
- Respecting the right of teachers to teach
- Using good manners
- Having self-control
We can’t wait to see the rocket filling up fast now!

Learning about Synthesising
In English we have a new reading strategy for the next few weeks which is Synthesising. This is where we have obtained some knowledge about a topic from reading or talking with people and then we learn new information and then our knowledge changes. After our visit from Jason from the Jinibara Council on Monday, we were able to use Synthesising. Over the term, we have been focusing on the different plants in our rainforest and we found out that the Black Wattle can be considered an invasive tree species and has a short lifespan (up to 20 years).
Then …... Jason told us on Monday that the wood from the Black Wattle was used for making tools and weapons and it was important for the limbs and tree to rot back into the soil as it helped make the soil more fertile.
So, after hearing this information, our ideas changed about the Black Wattle.
During our English session we read more about the Black Wattle and found out that it saves all the microbiota in the soil and it fixes nitrogen in the ground. The seeds are highly nutritious and packed with protein. When the wattle tree flowers, the wild honey is ready to harvest as medicine and that people can make guitars out of the Black Wattle wood.
So, through Synthesising, we have formed a new understanding about how precious the Black Wattle tree is and understand why it was and still is treasured by the Indigenous clans of this area.
In English we have been listening to traditional tales from Asia. We have looked at dynamic dialogue in stories which helps the reader understand the different characters and their personality traits. This week we are planning our own story with a morale to share with our peers.

Over the last two terms we have been busy creating PowerPoints promoting our school rainforest. We have inserted photos that we have taken in our groups and have added sound effects, a scribble map to show location and have incorporated historical photos from the original development of the rainforest 18 years ago. Many thanks to Mr Greig for his extra help with practical advice. This week we are adding speech to our slides and we will be presenting our final PowerPoint to entertain and inform our peers.

Animation
Over the next few weeks in English we will be looking at different forms of animation- Stop Motion, computer generated, comics and cartoons. We will explore “Ethical Dilemmas”. From there we will work in small groups to create storyboards for our own Stop Motion Animation using i-motion. Students are excited about using technology to tell their stories.
Natural Disasters
This term Year 5 classes have looked at Natural Disasters, in particular cyclones and flooding. Most students had some recent experiences or stories to discuss with their class about flooding due to the recent serious weather events. Part of this unit was to look at what happens before (preparing), during (managing) and after (responding). Students discussed “Emergency Kits” and “Emergency Procedures” they have at home. What do you do at home to keep everyone safe?

Music
Ukulele
Students all the way from Prep to Year 6 have been learning the Ukulele and singing in groups. We will also have a select few performing on parade in week 8. I am so proud of all students and how well they have performed their Ukulele assessment in class this term.

Hip Hop Crew
Maleny Hip Hop Crew are training every Tuesday lunch and are working on a piece to perform at the Maleny Country Fair.

War on Waste
The rain has been a bit of a pain over the last few weeks so, unfortunately, we haven’t been able to work in the garden. Today we weeded all the garden beds and tomorrow we will be planting new seedlings. We are looking forward to having a big crop of snow peas again this year.

Our Wonga Wonga vine is growing well and we are redirecting its growth along the fence.
While it has been wet the Garden Club members have been busy creating a letter S for the Sunshine Coast Refugee Week Display. Many groups, schools and organisations have been asked to decorate a letter to add to a display for Refugee Week. The final work will say “The Sunshine Coast Welcomes Refugees.” We were very proud of our letter S and being a part of this positive initiative.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Tuckshop Survey Outcome Response
The results of the recent Survey are under active consideration by Members and the Tuckshop Staff. Analysis of the Menu Options and the actual sales of items from the menu are shown below:
Whilst the Menu provides 54% Green-rated (Healthy) options, these only account for 19% of all items purchased. Concerningly, it appears that Red (once a Term) and Amber (sometimes) options cover 81% of all items sold through the Tuckshop by volume.
As such, the P&C and Tuckshop Staff are undertaking design of an entirely new menu considering the above analysis and the comprehensive feedback from families. This new menu will be implemented from the commencement of the 2023 School Year.
The process officially starts at our next P&C Meeting at 8.50am on Wednesday 8th June in the Innovation Centre Meeting Room. Members and non-members are invited to participate!
