Principal’s Report
Maleny Show Holiday this Friday 27 May
At this stage our School Concert Band will be performing at the 2022 Maleny Show this Friday the 27th May, at the Maleny Showgrounds - weather permitting.
Students will need to meet at the Performance area at the Maleny Showgrounds at 9.30am. All band members will have the opportunity to watch the other performing primary and high school ensembles and bands performing throughout the morning. An order of the bands performing is yet to be finalised. Students, friends and family are encouraged to support the other bands performing after their own performance.
Students will need to be in full band uniform for this performance – long black pants, black shoes, black socks and the Maleny State School uniform shirt. Students will need to bring their instrument, music, instrument extras (valve oil, spare reeds etc) and water bottle.
Don’t miss the Poultry Pavilion where Chicken Little (our rooster) and his girls will once again put their best feathers forward in the school’s division. Thank you to Jo and all students in the Poultry Club that are assisting to prepare our chooks.
Under 8’s Day
Due to the weather forecast we have postponed this event until next Term when the sun comes out. Stay tuned and we will let you know when this is occurring.
Graffiti and Vandalism
It has been disappointing to see our town and school fall victim to recent vandalism and graffiti attacks. Please alert the police in the first incident if you notice any suspicious behaviour or see anyone in our school grounds out of hours that should not be there.
This Wednesday our students will have the opportunity to join the National Simultaneous Storytime across Australia by listening to an electronic download of the story.
Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 8 June – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting on Wednesday the June at 8:50 am. This meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online access.
Our P&C is achieving some wonderful outcomes and welcomes all newcomers to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.
Have a Magic Week in Maleny.
John
From the Deputy Principal
What works in promoting reading for pleasure?
There is a growing body of evidence which illustrates the importance of reading for pleasure for both educational purposes as well as personal development which ultimately leads to independent reading.
Strategies to improve independent reading include:
- Having access to resources and having books of their own has an impact on children’s attainment. There is a positive relationship between the estimated number of books in the home and attainment (Clark 2011). Children who have books of their own enjoy reading more and read more frequently (Clark and Poulton 2011).
- An important factor in developing reading for pleasure is choice; choice and interest are highly related (Schraw et al, 1998; Clark and Phythian-Sence, 2008)
- Literacy-targeted rewards, such as books or book vouchers have been found to be more effective in developing reading motivation than rewards that are unrelated to the activity (Clark and Rumbold, 2006).
- Parents and the home environment are essential to the early teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading; children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued (Clark and Rumbold, 2006).
- Reading for pleasure is strongly influenced by relationships between teachers and children, and children and families (Cremin et al, 2009).

Yummy Yummy Fruit Salad
Students in 2A have just completed creating some delicious fruit salad bowls for their Design and Technology unit, some very creative fruits (and vegetables) were put together and enjoyed. Well done!
We are well on our way to completing our next unit of work on Preferences for a character in our English work. Who will choose the Shark or the Wolf..? We are waiting to see who will come out on top!
Science Push and Pull Toys are also due next week and we are waiting in anticipation on the creations we will share.

Pinball Machine Fun!!!
The 2/3C class have been busy researching and designing their pinball machines. They have been asked to create a pinball machine that is fun to use. However, there are some rules they must follow which will be the biggest part of the challenge! One of the parts we are most excited about is having a theme for our pinball machine. Obviously from a teaching perspective we are hoping that students gain an understanding of the forces that are placed on the ball whilst in motion.
