Principal’s Report
NAPLAN 2022
The NAPLAN online test window starts on Tuesday 10 May and finishes on Friday 20 May 2022. The NAPLAN online test window is nine days. This is to accommodate schools that may have fewer devices.
All Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper. Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are more engaging for students. One of the main benefits is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test presents questions which may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. Tailored testing allows a wider range of student abilities to be assessed and measures student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN result is based on both the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions challenging; they may be taking a more complex test pathway.
What does NAPLAN assess?
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN test materials.
Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided by your child’s school later in the year.
How are NAPLAN results used?
- Students and parents/carers may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
- Teachers use results to help identify students who need greater challenges or extra support.
- Schools use results to identify strengths and areas of need to improve teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.
- The community can see information about the performance of schools over time at myschool.edu.au.
Year 3 students do the writing test on paper (on day 1 only) • Year 5 writing must start on day 1 (schools must prioritise completion of writing across days 1 and 2 only)
Year 3: 40 min. Year 5: 42 min. Students are provided with a ‘writing stimulus’ (sometimes called a ‘prompt’ – an idea or topic) and asked to write a response in a particular genre (narrative or persuasive writing)

Supporting your child’s learning at home:
Teachers are often asked by parents how they can support their child’s learning at home. A good place to go to better understand what is taught at each stage of a child’s schooling is the Australian Curriculum website.
The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life – wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.
Download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. There is also information about how schools can use the Australian Curriculum to support students' needs and interests, and links to further information.

Year 4A & 4B
WOW...Week 4 already!
It has been a busy start to the Term 2 with public holidays, school photos, ANZAC services and the Cross Country. We have been very proud of our students in these special events. Here are just some of the proud students from 4B.
We started the term finishing our English Unit on examining humorous poetry where we had fun identifying poetic devices such as puns, spoonerisms and neologisms. Now we have started our Unit on Traditional Stories with our first focus being Dreaming Stories.
This term we are looking at Media Arts by examining the persuasive features in multimedia advertisements and how they can be used to persuade others to protect an important place.
Science: Ready Set Grow
As an introduction to our Unit, 4A has had fun creating ‘Grassheads’ to observe the characteristics of living things and the life cycle of plants. 4B has set us an experiment on seed growth. We are also looking at the life cycle of animals. We have been observing the life cycle of the Monarch (Wanderer) butterfly in our classroom. We were amazed at how tiny the caterpillars were at the start of their life cycle and how they spend their days eating and eating. The best thrill was when we came to school after the weekend and saw that one of our caterpillars had turned into chrysalis. Now we wait patiently and see if the butterfly emerges in a few days.

Persuasive Powers
This term Year 5 students have been using their powers of persuasion to convince readers to feel a certain way about various topics. There have been some VERY strong biases towards homework, pocket money and school as we learn skills and prepare for the assessment task. Here are some short examples that students have completed during class:
- “Sharks in captivity get extremely confused and their intelligent brains are wasted in a small glass box just for our entertainment.” (Conor)
- Sharks. “Being an apex predator, they should remain free in the ocean. How would you feel if you were stuck in a glass box with no way out?” (Loic)
- Flying Foxes. “Not only do they leave a mess everywhere they go, they also carry diseases and are atrociously loud... (Isla)
- “Sharks lurk in the depths of the sea, waiting, hunting. That is until they strike out wildly, throwing their heads about, ripping their prey to shreds.” (Imogen)
- Testing on Animals. “Imagine poor defenceless animals made to go into labs, suffering to get tested on medicine or make up before it is used on humans. This is a real terrifying ongoing nightmare for animals. Now imagine you getting tested in the same way. Animals should and must be treated like us.” (Isabella)
LOST IN SPACE
Recently the 3 classes have been “Lost in their learning about SPACE”.
Some interesting Facts that we have discovered from our own research:
- Mercury has 1 sunrise every 180 Earth days. (Matilda)
- Neptune is named after the Roman God of the Sea. (Riley)
- Jupiter is more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined. (Levi)
- Black Holes suck up everything including light. (Henry)
- In 140million years, Earth days will be increased to 25 hr days (Matthew)
- The planet Venus has lots of volcanoes. The air is filled with thick clouds of poisonous gas. The gas smells like rotten eggs. (Priya)

Next P&C Meeting 11 May @ 3:00pm
Mother’s Day Stall
The P&C would like to express its gratitude to Mandy McMahon, Kate Stassen, Senior Students and their crew of fabulous volunteers for their generous time in preparing and running our beautiful 2022 Mother’s Day Stall. It was a delight to see the joy and wonder of the students’ faces when exploring the selection of gifts available. A special note of thanks goes to the Seniors who showed their amazing maths skills in professionally running the till and the care with which they named and packaged the gifts being purchased. Finally, the P&C wants to acknowledge Miss Mandy who has been the driving creative force behind this Stall for many years. Without her dedication and commitment, this event would not have become a special part of the students’ greater experience of their journey through this School. This was Miss Mandy’s last Mother’s Day Stall and we sincerely thank her for the immeasurable devotion she has given to the P&C.
