Principal’s Report
Welcome Back
We have had a very smooth yet exciting transition back to school, hosting our school ANZAC Service and Cross Country last Friday. Thank you to the healthy crowd of parents that participated in both these events and the excellent coordination of the Cross Country by our Health and Physical Education teacher, Mr Turner.
The start of the term is a great time to review your children’s home reading routines and set a new goal for them. Our main school focus this year is English, so I take this opportunity to remind parents of the importance of reading to your children and listening to them read at every opportunity you can find, especially in a real-life context. Parent teacher interviews will be held over the next two weeks, please book a time with your child’s teacher. Students will receive their Semester One report at the end of this term.
ANZAC Day Service
Thank you to all parents that attended our moving school ANZAC Service last Friday. I would like to especially thank past student Luke from the Maleny State High School for playing the Last Post, which he did so professionally. I was extremely proud of our student leaders that spoke beautifully, the choir that performed so confidently and the respectful behaviour and manner of all students in attendance.
A huge thank you to all students that participated in the ANZAC Parade and Service on Monday in very challenging conditions. Our school was proudly led in the march by our school captains Anna, Archer, Zara and Toby. Anna and Archer had the honour of addressing the crowd at the main ANZAC service and did an excellent job. Well done!
Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 11 May – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting on Wednesday 11 May at 3:00 pm. This meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre where parents can attend face to face or can tune in from their own home using Teams online access.
We would love to see many more faces come along to our meetings to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.
Have a Magic Week in Maleny.

Year 6 Mediation and Playground Leadership
This term, students from 6A who have volunteered to take what they learnt about Peer Mediation and Playground Leadership last term, are practising and honing their new skills in the Junior areas during both play breaks. As mediators, the Year 6 students are there to help our younger students work through any playground issues that may arise. In addition, the Year 6s will also be running games for those who are interested in participating in organised play. Each Year 6 class will have the opportunity to take on the mediator’s role for the remaining terms. Thank you to those 6A students who volunteered their time during Term 2. Your efforts and commitment go a long way to supporting the pro-active ethics of our school.

- How to sort behaviour
- How to handle challenging and testing behaviours
- Choosing your strategy, the three choices
- Using emotion coaching to encourage good behaviour
- 7 tactics for encouraging good behaviour
Should you like further information or to register your interest, please email me before the end of this month at pcave2@eq.edu.au

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Respectful – Manners Matter
Welcome back everyone! It’s so great to see everyone after the Easter holidays and welcoming new students. We start the new Term off with a Be Respectful rule – Manners Matter.
This means we focus on:
- Using please, may I, thank-you etc.
- Waiting (approximately 1m back) until adults have finished talking before interrupting.
- Let adults walk in front or go first through doorways or on paths.
- Pedestrian manners on footpath, keep to the left.
- Thanking parent helpers and volunteers in our school.
- Saying good morning/good afternoon to staff, adults and students when you pass in school grounds.
- Knock and wait before entering a classroom when on a message.
- Saying “Yes Mrs (or) Mr” …… not just yes.
- Displaying all these manners throughout the whole school including the office, tuckshop, playground, bus lines and on the bus.

Robotics Club
What is RoboClub?
Maleny State School, under the school's GEMS program, is delivering a specialised Yr5 & 6 invitational program for a maximum of 16 students (8 - Yr 5 & 8 - Yr 6 students) to delve deeply into the world of robotics. Students will work in active teams (pairs and groups up to 4) to build, program and explore the potential of the Lego robotics systems. This program will run for the majority of the school calendar year. Each week, students will participate in sessions with Mr Greig and Mr Sanderson.
Aim of the GEMS (STEM) - RoboClub Yr5&6 program
The aim of this program is to develop a deep understanding of Robotics/Coding and extend relevant knowledge and skills in the traditional subject areas of Science, Technology (Design and Digital) and Mathematics. Students will engage in various programmed lessons and challenges to boost student critical thinking skills, design, problem solving complex scenarios and develop team-work skills. In previous years we have participated in regional school robotics competitions.
We intend to participate in the robotics competition RoboRave International right here on the Sunshine Coast. RoboRave Australia ( http://www.robocoast.tech/roborave-australia ) is on Sunday July 2022 at the University of the Sunshine Coast Queensland. We are planning to send a number of teams to this event. Please note it is a weekend event. More details to come on this exciting opportunity.
When is RoboClub held?
For the first time the program will run after school on a Thursday between 3:00pm - 4:30pm every week. Children, when released from class, will need to head directly to the school Innovation Centre building (school Library) to complete attendance. It will be a good opportunity to grab a quick snack, grab a drink and go to the toilet before the session starts at 3:00pm sharp. NB If students are absent for the day please notify Mr Greig ( ajgre2@eq.edu.au ) of their absence.
We are looking for students eager to learn and problem solve challenging tasks in a team-based activity. No previous skills are required. If interested, contact Mr Greig as there are still some places left.
We hope to start on Thursday 28 April.
Students who have already registered will be notified confirming their placement, important information and the starting date.

Conor Conor took on the challenge of his second ever Aquathon at the Queensland State Aquathon Trials in Hervey Bay. This was his first ocean swim as the Regional trials were in a lake. An Aquathon is a 1km run, 200m swim and 1km run. Conor narrowly missed out on being selected in the Queensland team but is already looking forward to trying again next year. He came 27th out of 90 boys (11 and 12 year olds combined) and 6th out of 35 (11 year boys). He was first in his age group for the Sunshine Coast region (boys). The Maleny State School community is extremely proud of Conor’s achievements and looks forward to more amazing achievements in the future. ![]() ![]() |
Special mentions
At Maleny State School we love to acknowledge sporting achievements through our school programs but also what our students can achieve in community sports. If you would like your child’s achievements acknowledged, please email sturn171@eq.edu.au with any details.
Term 1 SPECIAL MENTIONS This term, Levi and Bryce competed at the Queensland State Athletics Championships in Brisbane. Both boys qualified at the Regional event and represented Maleny Little Athletics against the best of the best in our great state. We are extremely proud of their achievements and wish them all the best in the future. |
|
|
Levi competed in high jump for the under 9s. He came 5th out of 22 competitors on countbacks. All 7 finalists cleared 1.10m but not 1.15m, so there was a 3-way tie for 1st, 2-way tie for 4th and 5th. |
|
Bryce qualified for states in Brisbane for Little Athletics after coming 3rd in discus at Regionals held at USC. He came 6th at states with a throw of 27.86m. He competed against 32 boys from all around Qld. This not only gave him a PB, but he also broke the club record for Maleny Little Athletics in the U11s Boys 500g discus. |

Welcome Back
It has been great to see everyone back after the Easter break and already moving on with all our unit activities. We did have a great end to last term, with students creating some great recyclable lunchboxes. There are a few photos below and we have begun planning for our new Science Unit and working towards creating a plan for our Push Pull toy. We are also preparing to make our delicious Fruit Salad for Design and Technology in Week 4.

We are looking forward to a busy and productive term ahead.
Sarsha Anthony & Hayley Chamberlain (2A)
Year 2/3C
Art and Drama
It is lovely to be back after a wonderful Easter Break. Students in 2/3C are extremely excited to be starting their puppet making for our Pig the Pug drama poetry unit this term. They will be bringing home scripts to practice over the next few weeks and will be working on their voice (tone, volume, and pitch). They will also include actions and movements that match the script whilst performing.
We are also eager to begin designing our pin ball machines for our technology unit. We will be bringing home our designs shortly to start collecting the items we need to create our own pin ball machine.
We are looking forward to another busy term ahead!
