Maleny SS Vision : Connected Learners - Creative Leaders

Maleny SS School Values

  • High Expectations
  • A Supportive Learning Culture
  • Being a Reflective Life Long Learner

Harmony and Anti Bullying National Day of Action Free Dress $1 donation this Friday 18 March. Join us for a special assembly on Friday 18 March at 9:00am.

These two events fit beautifully together and, as a school, we will celebrate them both this week. All classes will be participating in a number of activities to promote respectful relationships, build resilience and develop strategies to deal with bullying.

We ask students to wear orange or bright colours as free dress (sun safe) this Friday 18 March to support our anti bullying and harmony day message. Gold coin donations will be collected and donated to Welcome2Maleny which is a local group that supports refugees on the Sunshine Coast. Welcome2Maleny donates stationary, school uniforms and school supplies to refugee students living on the Sunshine Coast as well as providing resources for the Refugee Learning Centre in Cisarua, Indonesia to support young students with their learning.

All classes will be participating in special activities this week to ensure our children are clear on what bullying is and how harmful it can be as well as developing skills to assist them in reacting appropriately if they are bullied.

Students from Yr 1 to Yr 6 will participate in a survey to identify student concerns and knowledge of using the ‘High Five’ strategy. Our Preps will discuss this as a class and share their ideas.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Talk Friendly:

  • Tell the person in a calm voice that you don’t like what they are doing.

Ignore:

  • Go back to what you were doing or do something else and ignore what happened.

Walk Away:

  • Take some time to calm down (do a lap around the oval, walk somewhere else)

Talk Firmly:

  • Tell the person to STOP doing what they are doing in a strong voice.

Report:

  • Tell the adult on duty FIRST that there is a problem. You can tell your own teacher if you need to later.

Maleny State School is an incredibly supportive school and we continually work hard to ensure that everyone feels like they belong and can experience success. Every child has different strengths and needs, thus different support needs and levels of support are required for different students. This includes academic, social, emotional, physical and behavioural supports, which enhances our ability to create equity and ensure all students can access learning and achieve success. We consider individual circumstances in all of our decisions on how we support children and may not always be able to share these for confidentiality reasons. Our school, like our town, is made up of people from incredibly diverse backgrounds, which I see as a strength. We welcome different views and strive to continually improve.

It is important everybody knows what Bullying is and what it is not.

This is because the manner in which bullying is addressed needs to be treated differently to get the best outcome. A shared understanding of common language and terms allows us to ensure we minimise any misunderstandings in communication in relation to bullying. Often, anytime someone is nasty to someone else the term ‘Bullying’ is used, when this may not necessarily be the case even though the incident may be very serious.

To be classified as bullying the act needs to be: (some behaviours are hurtful and appalling but are not bullying, often because they are a one off so will be dealt with differently to a bullying scenario)

  • Harmful
  • Deliberate
  • Ongoing
  • An unfair balance of power is occurring

It is important to identify the roles people play in bullying situations so that you know how to act to prevent potential bullying situations. Ask your children to explain and identify the 3 B’s in various situations you discuss or observe.

The 3 B’s

The Bully - person doing the bullying.
The Bullied - the person being bullied.
The Bystanders - the people present when the bullying occurs.

Bystanders Make A Difference

Once the 3B’s are understood our main focus needs to be on the Bystanders behaviour. Research shows the bystanders have the most power in being able to make a difference. Bystanders will make a positive or negative difference.

Thank you Merrick Ilett and our 2021 P&C

I would like to thank the 2021 Maleny P&C members and Executive led by President Merrick Ilett for an incredibly successful year in what has been, for the second year in a row, very challenging conditions. As Merrick trades places with our 2021 Vice President this year, I would like thank him for his dedication and leadership, and acknowledge his time and commitment over the last 4 years in which he has been President of our P&C committee. This places Merrick as the longest serving President on our two honour boards. With only a small membership group, an incredible amount was achieved in 2021. Financial contributions of over $70 000 were donated to the school which have been very much appreciated, especially in a year where a number of major fundraising events (eg. Country Fair etc) have not been possible. I thank our hard-working executive team who have certainly done the heavy lifting throughout the year, finding new opportunities when faced predominately with hurdles.

Congratulations to a small group of members that have been consistently in attendance at meetings and have organised, contributed towards and/or participated in fundraising activities.

The continued efforts, time and hard work of the Executive has been very much appreciated by myself, our school and by our parent and community body.

The deliberate strategies of engaging with our parent body (eg. beginning of the year welcome afternoon teas) and our business community, and focusing on governance has been very beneficial both financially and collaboratively to our school.

The new governance processes including budgeting processes, the P&C Website, P&C Store, storage of documents on TEAMS and the tweaking of uniform and tuck shop operations, places the 2022 P&C in a great position moving forward, making the running of the P&C a much more effective and efficient support to the school.

We are looking forward to the implementation of the refurbishment of our Uniform Shop this year and the transitioning of O Block into the new OSHC Room.

Congratulations to our new P&C 2022 Executive

President – Zoltan Bourne
Vice President - Merrick Ilett
Treasurer – Kathy Fernance
Secretary – John Cassidy

Our next P&C Meeting will be held on Wednesday 11 May at 3:00pm and we are looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible in attendance.

Questions to ask your children

What questions do you ask your children after school? Do you get frustrated when they say, "I don't know”. Here are 5 questions parents can ask their children, that will create opportunities for informative conversations with their children.

  1. What did you learn today?
  2. How did you do?
  3. What did you do if you didn't understand?
  4. How can you improve your learning?
  5. What are you most proud of?

Give it a try and see how you go! (Research: Clarity - What matters most in Learning, Teaching and Leading. Author: Lyn Sharratt)

Paula Heiniger – Deputy Principal

From the Engagement and Well-being Teacher

During Term 2, I am gearing up to run the 123 Magic Parenting Program for any interested parents of young students attending Maleny State School. The Program consists of 3 sessions that will be run over two consecutive days (Monday and Tuesday) with the last session delivered on the following Monday. The first two mornings run for approximately 3 hours each, with the last session wrapping up within 2 hours. The associated cost is $10 for the workbook, along with a fridge magnet that gives a visual reminder of the options you have learnt during the course. Morning tea will be provided.

For me to gauge the interest level, I’d appreciate receiving an email from you, giving me an idea of what you are hoping to get out of attending the 3 sessions and what parenting problems you are wanting to address. If you can supply the age of your children, that can also be beneficial in future conversations. Feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding the delivery of the course. If you can make the email subject 123 Magic, it will make it easier for me to keep a track of those who are interested. I will follow up at the beginning of Term 2 to provide more information once I know if the interest is there. I look forward to hearing back from those of you who are ready to join me for fun, problem-solving and learning. Here’s to getting lots of enjoyment out of raising children!

Feedback from 2021 - 123 Magic – “I absolutely loved the content that Peta delivered. I feel this course could benefit all parents through learning new skills to help their children. I really feel the emotional coaching is a great tool.”

Looking forward to hearing from you.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be Respectful – “Everyone Belongs”

This is one of our favourite Buzz phrases of the year and coincides with Bullying No Way! Day (18 March) and Harmony Day (21 March). This Buzz phrase reminds us that we accept everyone with open arms, regardless of where they come from, what their abilities are, what they look like or what they believe.

Even though we are all DIFFERENT we show RESPECT and ACCEPT others and their ideas. WE don’t have to agree with them, but we need to acknowledge them and remember they are important to others.

Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was the same!

What "Everyone Belongs” means for us at school:

  • I am kind.
  • I am inclusive.
  • I use polite and positive language online and in person.
  • I treat others the way I want to be treated.
  • I encourage and support others.
  • I listen to others and accept their ideas.
  • I take turns and include others.
  • I show good sportsmanship.

2022 Maleny State School Cross Country

The Maleny State School Cross Country will be held on the main oval on Friday 1 April.

Students will need to bring:

  • Water bottle
  • Appropriate running attire and joggers
  • Sports shirt

Special Parade

A special parade will be held at 2:30pm to announce house winners and recognise 1st-3rd place.

We look forward to seeing students and parents at our Cross Country. Please remember to follow our social distancing protocols wherever possible and to stay home if you are feeling unwell. If you have any questions please contact the school on 5499 8333.

Prep A & Prep B

20 Days of Prep

Last week the Preps finally reached their 20th day of Prep. Zero the Hero visited with a letter about the number 20 and a “20 days of Prep” badge for everyone. These were worn proudly on the day and some even for a few days afterwards. Zero the Hero helps us to count and learn about numbers. Zero the Hero’s favourite number is zero and Zero pays us a visit every ten days when there is a number that ends in zero.

Science Fun

Both Prep classes have been very busy constructing Zoos in their classrooms to help with their learning about living things. The children have created habitats for their chosen animals and even set up an Animal Hospital to help care for sick and injured animals.

We’ve also been learning about plants and what they need to survive. We visited the School Garden and used our senses to observe the plants growing there. Some of us enjoyed tasting the mint and smelling a variety of herbs in the garden. Each child made their own grass head that they will take care of and observe over the next few weeks. We hope their grassy hair will be long enough to style by the end of term. Watch this space!

Poetry Fun

Year 2 have made a wonderful start to their writing this year. We have just completed some great poetry writing which incorporated rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, nouns and verbs. We are practicing our spelling/phonics every day with a variety of activities. We have now begun our unit on writing a narrative about family and friendship.

In Science, students have been given their assessment for this unit – Creating a Lunchbox that is not only strong but also waterproof. We are looking forward to sharing our creations with each other in a few weeks.

Please remember library is now on Mondays. We look forward to the remainder of term

Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain (2A)

Year 2/3C

2/3C have almost completed their narrative writing on friendships and have enjoyed creating characters for the story. The focus for this writing unit has been around compound sentences, noun groups, verb types and banning the boring with some fantastic vocabulary. Our next unit will be based on persuasive text.

We have just completed number in maths and will be moving on with the unit of chance and probability for the next couple of weeks.

In science we are looking at life cycles and Australian mammals, students are interested in learning about living things and how they grow and survive in an environment.

Reminder: We have had a change to our library day and it is now on Fridays.

P & C News

Welcome to your new 2022 Executive!

  • President: Zoltan Bourne
  • Vice President: Merrick Ilett
  • Treasurer: Kath Fernance
  • Secretary: John Cassidy

Thank you to the 30+ Parents and Staff who have already applied and been accepted as Members – your input (even if it is just an email or joining a single meeting – online or in person – to vote on something) is gratefully accepted! Sadly, less than half of our Members participated in our AGM leaving the P&C almost unable to continue to operate….

Traditionally, people think that P&C’s are about roping Members into endless volunteer roles.

Your P&C is anything but ‘Traditional’!

This year we are not only thinking outside of the box but we are shredding and composting it to welcome comments, feedback and partnering from anyone who has an opinion about what we are planning & funding with and for our School. If you see something on Facebook or hear something on the street, please redirect everyone to your P&C.

Over the coming year, we will be running a series of online surveys (anonymous and open to all) to seek everyone’s opinion on significant ideas and the allocation of funds. Of course, if you want a final say on any of these, just spend 60 seconds and join up online to have the power to cast your vote at one of our meetings!

School families and the wider Maleny community have recently been “chatting” about several important things that need to be addressed:

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)

1. The Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) service is progressing through planning with a projected opening date either late in Term 2 or at the commencement of Term 3. Employment Positions are planned to be advertised in April/May.

School’s Pool (the ‘Centennial’ Maleny Pool)

2. The School’s Pool (the ‘Centennial’ Maleny Pool) is currently listed for consideration regarding upgrades and refurbishment in light of its imminent 40th Birthday in 2023. If you are interested in commenting or being involved in any potential Pool upgrade or have other ideas, please email.

Maleny Country Fair

3. The Maleny Country Fair, which was postponed in late 2021 due to wet weather, has been scheduled for Term 3 and a date will be released once major external providers have confirmed their bookings. ** All pre-purchased rides wristbands/tickets, stalls tickets & hay bales will be honoured in full. **

With your input, Member or not, we can make targeted differences to not only the School but to our children’s learning experiences and the services & facilities made available to our wider community.

Thanks!
