Clean Up Australia Day

This Sunday is Clean up Australia Day which seems very appropriate after the wild weather and flooding we have experienced over the last week. We will be cleaning up our school this Friday. We are very proud of how clean we keep our school and this is often commented on by visitors.

The Great Obi Clean Up occurs quarterly and is taking place in Maleny this Sunday 13 March from 7:30am to 9:30am.

LOCATION: 5 Coral Street, Maleny QLD, Australia
Council: Sunshine Coast Regional Council (QLD)
Site Type: River/Creek
Meeting Point: Tesch Park, Coral Street, next to the library, by the roundabout.
Site Supervisor: Joanne Turner

I have asked our students to make a sustainability pledge of something they will commit to that promotes recycling, reusing or help reducing litter. Imagine if every family were to commit to one sustainable practice. What an amazing difference our school would make to our community and planet.

You can see examples of pledges on the link below.

Click on the link below, scroll to the picture above and click on Share Your Pledge.

https://www.cleanup.org.au/

Will you make a pledge towards reducing your own waste contribution?

The message is you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing!
Thousands of small steps make a big difference - together we can all be part of the solution.

Some pledges you can make by: Saying no to straws? Recycling your soft plastics? Taking empty bottles and cans to a Container Refund Scheme? Bringing your own water bottle? Composting? Buying recycled items, Choosing not to buy fast fashion, Rinsing your recyclables or Refusing to purchase fruit and vegetables pre-wrapped in plastic?

"We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." (Anne Marie Bonneau, the Zero-Waste Chef)

NAPLAN Online update

Our students in Years 3 and 5 will be undertaking NAPLAN testing online in May this year, at various times from 10 May – 20 May. Moving to NAPLAN online brings many advantages including a test design that offers test items tailored to students’ knowledge and ability.

We will also be participating in national practice tests at various times over the next couple of weeks, see timetable below for details. This is an excellent opportunity to fine tune any technical and logistical needs, as well as familiarise students and teachers with the online testing process.

The practice test provides a familiarity experience ahead of the May tests. It offers two tests - writing (Years 5, 7 and 9) and omnibus (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9). The omnibus test is comprised of sample items from the reading, conventions of language and numeracy test domains. Each test is approximately 45 minutes of testing time. The tailored test design is not applied to the practice test. No student results are available from the practice test.

For further information, please visit Queensland’s NAPLAN Online website, ACARA’s NAPLAN Online website and ACARA’s Assessment Platform. Advice for parents and caregivers about NAPLAN in general is also available.

Parents and caregivers of children in these NAPLAN year levels will need to be aware of important information relating to privacy, which can be found on the NAPLAN Online Queensland website’s parent information page.

Parents of students in these year levels will also receive a note this week with further details about NAPLAN online and the NAPLAN Privacy Notice.

We will keep you up-to-date in the lead-up to May, but in the meantime if there are any questions you have please contact your child’s class teacher or myself.

BUZZ-Phrase Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn

SWPBS- Fortnightly Focus / Rules -

Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn

  • I use whole body listening – posture, eyes, mouth, hands
  • I listen without interrupting
  • I raise my hand if I have a question or don’t understand, but I wait until the person speaking has finished
  • I wait if people are speaking to stop before I join in.
  • I actively listen to what others are saying so I can understand and comment on what they are saying rather than thinking about what I am going to say next.
  • I am silent in a group when someone is speaking and my eyes are on the speaker.
  • I do not engage in side conversations when someone is speaking.

Year 4A & 4B

A Fantastic Start to the Year

The students in 4A have all settled in well and we are so impressed with seeing such beautiful manners. We have been learning different languages to say hello as we mark the roll. Yuddi Guddi is the way to say ‘Hello, come in’ for the Jinibara people of this land.

In English we have been reading The Twits and have been focusing on identifying and writing noun groups to describe Mr and Mrs Twit by Roald Dahl. Some of the noun groups that the children have made up include; the filthy dirty brute, the grizzly old grunion, hideous horrible hag. Last week we completed a cline for the word ‘said’ ordering different ways to use the word and intensifying it to show the feeling of the character, for example said, moaned, mumbled, yelled, squealed, screeched, roared, bellowed. We also used the witness box to interview Mr and Mrs Twit about their actions.

In Science the children have enjoyed being young geologists exploring characteristics of different rocks and soils. We looked at igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and completed a "Rock Hound" activity. We have also conducted different tests on soil types to get the "Dirt on Soils". Please look out for erosion in our environment as this will help children in the next section of our science unit.

This week we welcomed our new teacher partner Shalisa Dennis to 4B. We look forward to having the two classes work closely together over the year.

Hello there! My name is Shalisa Dennis (Mrs Dennis) and I am the new teacher for our new 4B class this year. So far everyone has settled in well to their new classroom and we are enjoying making it our own. In English, we have been reading The Twits by Roald Dahl and it has been fun hearing about the many pranks that Mr and Mrs Twit play on each other. We have also been discussing the routines and procedures for our classroom, as well as talking about our Maleny 4Be’s. It’s going to be a great year of learning in 4B.

Kind regards
Lou Walsh & Trish Mackay (4A)
Shalisa Dennis (4B)

Year 5A, 5B & 5C

A Wonderful Start to the Year

Our students in 5A, 5B and now 5C have all settled in well and we are really excited about the leadership potential already being observed in our groups!

In English we have been reading Deltora Quest and FING! and have been focusing on planning and writing our very own chapter that could be found in either book. Learning about and then using the various Language Features and Literary Devices that we have identified in the novels is what we have been focussing on this week.

In Science we have been investigating Adaptations of living things. Learning about Behavioural and Structural adaptations which allow a living organism to survive in a specific environment will be very important once the students begin to “Create their own Creature”....keep an eye out for some very interesting “new species” our classes will be generating.

War on Waste

Cleaning up our Garden Area

It is lovely to be back with some new students joining the garden club. Our very efficient groundsman, Justin, has been busy tidying up our garden area. Over the last two weeks we have been weeding, adding our own compost, planting new seedlings and mulching. Our scarecrow had a facelift and is looking very bright and snazzy. This week we planted bok choy, pak choy, lettuce, kale, shallots, beans, beetroot, rocket, dill, coriander and tomatoes. Our Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines and Wonga Wonga vines are growing well.

We have new composting monitors who have taken over the job of filling our big compost bins every Friday and emptying the compost bins in the classroom. At the end of last year, we were successful in a new grant application to manage our organic waste. We will receive $2500 to purchase new composting bins for all classrooms and lunch areas and we will be adding several different worm farms (above and below the ground) in the garden as well.

It is certainly lovely to be back and have such positive and motivated little helpers in the garden.

Kind regards
Lou Walsh
