Principal’s Report
Welcome Back
It is wonderful to now have all families returning to school. While most students have only been back one week, it is actually already Week 4 of Term One. A special welcome to our new Preppies and new families that have commenced their first year at Maleny State School. We have 49 new Preppies and 19 new students across other year levels commencing with us this year. Please ensure you assist us to enact our school values by actively supporting all students and families, especially those new to Maleny.
I congratulate all our staff who have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks in creating a Supportive Learning environment for all students and setting High Expectations by embedding school / classroom rules and routines.
Maleny SS School Values
- High Expectations
- A Supportive Learning Culture
- Being a Reflective Lifelong Learner
Each year our teachers commence the year by embedding our school values into everything they do. Setting high expectations for students with rules, routines, behaviours, uniforms and learning outcomes. We also realise the importance of creating strong positive relationships with students and families to ensure we create a supportive learning culture in which our students can thrive. By teaching children how to learn we aim to mould students into becoming reflective lifelong learners.
School Focus
This year our school will be focusing on refining and aligning systems in our school, namely:
Learning Walls, High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS), Feedback-individual goals.
School Targets
Our main academic targets include:
- 95% of students in English, Maths and Science achieving a ‘C’ or above
- 50% of students achieving an ‘A’ or ‘B’ for English, Maths and Science
- 95% attendance
New School Based Psychologist
In a new initiative this year, school psychologists have been employed by our North Coast Region. I am very pleased to announce that Krystelle Pobar has joined our Student Wellbeing Team and will be working at our school each Friday. Krystelle will be based at our school and will also work at 5 other schools that include Maleny SHS, Mooloolah SS, Woombye SS, Burnside SHS and Beerwah SHS.
The focus of the Wellbeing Workforce is to provide individual support to students with mild to moderate mental health concerns, thereby intervening early and alleviating some of the challenges teachers experience in supporting these students in the classroom.
General eligibility criteria for referral to the program are:
- Mental health concerns (school refusal/anxiety; general anxiety; anxiety re: COVID; signs of depression; sleep difficulties; social difficulties; and those who may be managing stressors at home {eg. parent separation, custody arrangements} to name a few)
- Mild – moderate severity
- Barriers to mental health care
Teachers and parents can make a student referral to our Enhanced Learning Committee that meets every second Tuesday.
Krystelle is very much looking forward to being a part of the Maleny SS community and supporting students who may experience mental health difficulties.
For further information please contact our Guidance Officer Kirsty Brady or myself.
COVID-19 Cases at School
We are slowly seeing cases of students testing positive across different year levels or needing to isolate due to being a close contact with another family member. Thank you to all families that have quickly informed the school of their situation.
Our school procedure if a child develops symptoms while at school is:
- Child is isolated from other students, cared for while still under adult supervision and provided first aid if required.
- Parents are called and ask to collect student immediately.
- Parents are given a RAT test to administer at home (the school will not be administering any RAT tests to any child)
- If the RAT test shows a positive result the child stays at home recovering for 7 days. Parents notify the school immediately and QLD Health, and seek medical advice. If the test is negative the child can return to school if they are symptom free.
- School notifies the parents of the class that the student is in the same day by email that a positive case has been identified in the class. Students will not be identified in any communications. (Note that other class members are not considered to be close contacts, only members of your own household are classified as close contacts when there is a positive case in the household.) If further cases are still occurring after 5 days in the class an email update will be sent to parents.
- If the child has no symptoms they may return to school after the 7th day, they do not need to have another RAT test as they will most likely still test positive as they may be shedding dead COVID cells.
Managing COVID-19
This is essential to the success of keeping everyone safe and preventing the spread of COVID-19.
If your child is unwell or displaying any COVID-19 symptoms, they must not attend school. I cannot emphasise this message strongly enough – it is critical to keeping our school community safe.
The following procedures and information outlines current Queensland Health procedures, please be aware this may change in the future.
https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/stay-informed/i-have-covid/first-steps-if-you-have-covid
(Queensland Government website last updated 9 February 2022)
In summary if your child tests positive.
If you learn you have COVID-19 using a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) at home, report your positive RAT result to Queensland Health.
1. Immediately isolate for 7 days
If you get COVID-19, you need to immediately isolate yourself at your home, or other accommodation, for 7 full days from the date you had your test.
Isolate means you need to stay away from other people as much as possible so you don’t give the virus to someone else.
2. Tell your household contacts to quarantine and get tested if they have symptoms
Tell the people that live with you that you have COVID-19. They need to quarantine at home with you for the same period of time. They need to get tested on Day 6 of their quarantine period, or earlier if they develop COVID-19 symptoms. Read more about testing and quarantine for close contacts.
3. Manage your symptoms and health
Most people who are fully vaccinated will be able to care for themselves at home, like you would for other viruses.
You may have symptoms like a fever, cough, headache or a sore throat. You will probably feel unwell for a day or two, and then start to feel better. Some fully vaccinated people will have no symptoms at all.
You should seek medical advice if you:
- are not improving after 2 or 3 days, or are getting sicker
- have a chronic health condition
- are pregnant.
While you are staying home, use our tips on looking after your mental wellbeing and keeping healthy and active at home.
If you are worried about your mental health, read about when to seek help and the mental health services available to support you.
If you need any other support while you’re in isolation, read our guide on where to get help.
4. Get the things you need delivered like food and medication
You will be in isolation for at least 7 days. It’s important you have everything you need for staying home. Any deliveries must be no contact. Ask friends or family members you don’t live with to get food and medication for you and leave it at your door.
5. Advise your School, social, work and education contacts to get tested if they have symptoms
It’s likely you will have been in contact with other people while you were infectious.
It is possible you may have spread the virus to others (without knowing) in the 2 days before you had symptoms or found out you have COVID-19.
If you have been in contact with anyone during that period, you need to tell them you have COVID-19 so they can monitor their own health and get tested if they feel unwell.
Close Contact
Students are classified as close contacts if anyone else in the household tests positive to COVID-19. This means they need to isolate at home and have a RAT/PCR test on Day 6 of their quarantine period.
If the test result is negative and they have no COVID-19 symptoms at the end of day 7 of their quarantine period, they can end quarantine.
If the test result is negative but they have COVID-19 symptoms at the end of day 7 of the quarantine period, they must wait until they have no symptoms before ending your quarantine.
The days of your quarantine period start counting:
- if you live with the person diagnosed with COVID-19, from the date that person took the initial test that returned a positive result
- if you do not live with the person diagnosed with COVID-19, from the date you last had contact with them. (If you have been with a person that has COVID-19 for more than four hours in a house or other accommodation, a care facility or similar.)
Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)
Our school has a supply of RATs which will be provided to staff or students who, while attending school, develop COVID-19 symptoms. Please note if your child has COVID-19 symptoms while at home they must not attend school, as a close contact neither should you or any other household members. If your child has COVID-19 symptoms, you can visit your local Queensland Health testing clinic and will be given priority access to a free RAT. Note: Schools will not be providing parents RAT tests that call and ask for one at the office.
Limiting Access for Parents/Volunteer/Visitors
Limitations on parent and visitor access are now in place. If you are a parent of a Prep or Year 1 student, you may enter the school with your child. All other parents and volunteers are not permitted on school grounds at this point.
Please ensure if you are entering the school grounds you wear a mask and socially distance from others. Please also avoid coming into our office area unless absolutely necessary.
Volunteers
Currently volunteers are not permitted on site, we will update you as soon as we are able to allow volunteers back at school. All volunteers will need to be double vaccinated and show proof of this at the office before commencing.
Morning Drop off
Please drop children off as normal and allow them to enter the school by themselves. Please do not send children to school before 8:30am.
Only Prep and Year One parents and parents of vulnerable students are currently permitted to come on to school grounds
Afternoon Collection (to avoid mass gatherings)
Parents/carers please socially distance while waiting and avoid gathering in groups.
Prep students will be collected from classrooms at 2:00pm for first 2 weeks (7-18 Feb) and then 2:40pm from then onwards.
Teachers in Years 2 to 6 will escort children to the footpath via gates below for parents/carers to collect:
- Office Gate at 2:45pm Years 6 & 5
- Office Gate at 2:50pm Years 3 & 4
- Crossing Gate at 2:50pm Year 2
- Under Year 1 building at 2:50pm Year 1
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
This week’s Rule: Be Respectful
Our Buzz Phrase: First Time Every Time (Parents love this one, use it at home to reward behaviour when it occurs and you will see more of the desired behaviour displayed.)
Our school is a Positive Behaviour for Learning School. This means we teach our children what our rules and routines expectations are and reward them for meeting or exceeding these expectations. An important element is making clear what our expectations are. For this reason, I have outlined some of our before and after school expectations below.
Before School Routines
Note that supervision is only provided from 8:30am onwards, students are encouraged not to attend before this time.
- Arrive at school from 8:30am onwards (Preps go straight to classrooms)
- Students may go to the Innovation Centre and borrow a library book
- Sit in year level area until the first bell goes
- After the first bell at 8:30am students may play handball on courts in year level area only
- Running or hanging around toilet areas is not permitted
- When second bell goes students line up for class or move directly to classrooms
- Students coming to school by bus must come directly into the school and are not permitted to go to shops or wait outside the school.
After School Routines
Walking or Riding
After students are released from school they should head directly home promptly.
Bikes are to be kept in bike racks and scooters in the enclosed area provided near the staff room.
Students, for safety reasons, should wear a helmet and must dismount inside the school grounds, on footpath and when using the crossing. It is important students are respectful of all other footpath users. Smile and acknowledge our Crossing Supervisors (It’s Free).
Students waiting for parents in cars (arriving at 2:50pm)
Students are to wait quietly along the Prep fence or behind the pedestrian crossing area on School side only, not on the fence across the road. Parents can park on this side of the road and students can then cross and meet them when they arrive. (This is for their safety and a courtesy to our neighbours.) If parents are ever later than the time the Crossing Supervisors have finished, children must move to the office, call home and wait there safely.
Waiting for High School Siblings
All students waiting for older siblings need to wait in the supervised area under B Block with Bus students. Staff will escort them out on time to meet their older siblings. No students are to wait on the other side of the road near the crossing.
Bus departures
2:50pm Buses (early buses)
Students move promptly to the footpath and wait along the fence in front of the appropriate bus zone and wait for the bus driver to load students. Prep and Year 1 students are collected from their class and directed to the correct areas (until they board their bus) by school staff.
Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.
Once loaded students must remain seated at all times and talk quietly.
Students must follow the QLD Transport Code of Conduct and I will be meeting with all bus students this week to discuss the expectations of bus behaviour and the Code of Conduct for Students travelling on buses. All parents will be emailed this information. Bus drivers will enforce this policy and any issues occurring on the bus should be conveyed to the bus driver in the first instance as soon as possible.
3:05pm Buses (late buses)
Students move directly under B Block at 2:50pm and wait quietly in bus lines.
Staff will take students and load on to buses just after 3:00pm which coincides with the time High School students start to walk past our school.
Good Start – After School Care
Students attending afterschool care must sit and wait quietly under B Block where they will be collected by Good Start staff and transported by mini bus.
After School Drop off / Pick up Zone 2:50 pm (to the right of pedestrian crossing on the school side)
Students wait quietly next to the Prep school fence until parents arrive and NOT across the road.
Students load quickly when parents arrive.
Students need to ensure they are not waiting on the walkway as this impedes pedestrian traffic.
If parents have not arrived before crossing supervisors have finished their shift students move to the office and wait to be collected.
Note: This is not an area to park and leave the car.
Swimming
Swimming will commence this week beginning 14 February on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and continue for the rest of the term. Shane Turner, along with 2 other qualified coaches, will conduct lessons. One of the major benefits of having our own school pool is we are able to keep costs to a minimum for parents. Cost for parents is $20, your immediate payment is much appreciated.
Students of the Week
Students will still be presented with student of the week awards in class until we are able to hold school assemblies.
Reminder: Slow down in 40km/h School Zones
Police across the Sunshine Coast district are urging all motorists to take extra care, slow down and be on the lookout for pedestrians near schools. The school zone speed limit is designed to ensure motorists have a greater chance to react if something unexpected happens.
Children can be impulsive, unpredictable and inexperienced, which is why motorists need to exercise caution in the vicinity of a school.
Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to pedestrians as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.
For further information on school zones, visit the link below.
http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/schoolzones
P&C Meeting AGM
Our P&C AGM will be held on Wednesday 9 March at 3:00pm in the Innovation Centre (library). Younger children are welcome, where parents can occupy them and be responsible for them, we have lots of fun things in the library to assist. Please join us face to face or online, new faces are always welcome and encouraged. Further notification of this meeting will be emailed in the future.
Free Furniture in Hall (this Friday 18 February)
4 of our classes in A Block will be receiving new classroom furniture this week. We currently have a massive amount of second-hand chairs, desks (student and teacher), bookcases etc. If you would like any or all you are welcome.

Come directly to the Hall this Friday between the following times only 9:00am – 2:00pm or 3:10 – 5:00pm. For the safety of our students, we do NOT want vehicles or parents in the school grounds between 2:00pm and 3:10pm as this is our busy go-home time. Besides being dangerous it will also be very disruptive to buses and traffic. Please wear a mask and socially distance.
Have a Magic week in Maleny
John
From the Deputy Principal
Volunteers Mandatory Training
This year we will not be holding a face-to-face training session for our volunteers, the information booklet that we provide will contain all the information that volunteers need to know. Each year Education Queensland produces a new mandatory training booklet for volunteers so it is important that you again read through the information carefully and seek clarification on anything that is contained in the booklets that you are unsure of. The mandatory training is ultimately a requirement that helps keep our children safe. The booklet can be picked up from the Office and again dropped off at the Office. On its return we will also need to site your vaccination certificate, as volunteers currently will need to be double vaccinated. We look forward to the time when we can again have our wonderful volunteers working in classrooms. We will inform our school community of this when the Department of Education releases any new guidelines.
RI – Religious Instruction
Our Religious Instructors are also volunteers and as such will also need to fulfil the above-mentioned mandatory training requirements. If you do not wish for your child to participate in RI lessons and you did not indicate this on your child/ren’s enrolment forms, please put in writing your wishes for them not to participate. When the time comes for RI lessons to be able to be conducted, those students who do not participate in RI will be involved in Virtues lessons.
Paula Heiniger – Deputy Principal
From the Engagement and Well-being Teacher
Welcome back!....and for some of you, welcome to Maleny State School for the very first time.
My name is Peta Cave and I work at the school on Mondays and Tuesdays in the role of Engagement and Wellbeing Teacher. I love the role as it gives me the opportunity to work across all year levels, supporting both students and teachers, helping in the delivery of social programs and working with individuals and small groups when the opportunity presents itself. I also get to meet up with parents, both on an individual level and in groups during the year, when the 123 Magic Parenting program is offered. Should you like to touch base with me, please find my email address below.
The first week of school can bring up a lot of mixed emotions for you and your young ones. As parents who are getting their children prepared for a brand new year of learning, you have probably already dealt with their excitement, apprehension and a myriad of emotions in between.
Your job to guide them through the peaks and troughs of developing emotions, can never be underestimated, so let’s reflect on what their emotional development encompasses and what you can do to support them.
During the beginning school years, your children are not only learning to identify and understand their own feelings, the school environment gives them a great opportunity to read, interpret and respond to the feelings of their peers. With conversations that address feelings, they are better able to link their thoughts with their feelings and become more adept at describing their emotions. With this development comes the growing ability to tolerate their own frustration levels more effectively and find ways to calm themselves down when needed.
The critical role you play in modelling how to respond to strong feelings gives them a guide to managing their own emotions. Let’s look at what can be done at home to ensure your child’s emotional development is being supported:
- As much as possible, keep the emotional climate of the home calm, warm and predictable.
- Be accepting of your child’s emotions and describe their feelings back to them. “It seems you are feeling frustrated at the moment.” I think you may be pleasantly surprised as to how quickly this type of descriptive feedback can accelerate the calming process. Coming up with another two descriptive sentences involving feeling words increases their emotional vocabulary and helps them to de-escalate.
- Encourage your children to discuss different situations they are involved in and the emotions attached to them. What makes them feel excited, happy, angry or worried. Using a story book can be a great resource to get the conversation started.
- When your child manages to remain calm rather than losing control, let them know that you are aware of the positive choice they made and acknowledge them for it.
- Help them to separate feelings and behaviour. “I know that you are feeling annoyed but it’s not ok to throw things at your brother.”
- Help children to understand the difference between their own and other people’s feelings. “I know you are feeling frustrated right now but what you are doing is making your sister feel sad.”
Should you have any feedback or questions regarding the information above, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Peta Cave – Engagement and Wellbeing Teacher

Welcome to Music at Maleny State School
Welcome to all our new and returning families. My name is Miss Abbott and I am the new Music Teacher at Maleny State School. I am looking forward to meeting you all this year. We hope you are well rested and ready to begin a new year. We have a very busy and exciting year ahead, full of many music and arts events.
Maleny Year 3-6 Choir
Choir is an extra-curricular Music Excellence program open to students in Years 3-6 and will run from Term 1 through to Term 4. Choir members will participate in a weekly 30-minute vocal training session which will explore various genres of music. There will be multiple performance opportunities throughout the year, both at school and within the community.
Choir will be run by Miss Abbott, our Music Teacher. It will be held in the music room every Wednesday at first lunch break. Choir numbers will be capped at 50 students and will be determined by the first 50 students to return their permission note. Therefore, we require 100% dedication and attendance to every lesson, rehearsal and performance from those who participate. Extra rehearsals may be necessary leading up to performances and will be held during lunch breaks on alternate days.
Maleny Year 3-6 Hip Hop Crew
The Maleny Hip Hop crew is an extra-curricular Dance Excellence training team open to students in Years 3-6. Members will participate in a weekly 30-minute training session that works on specific dance skills, technique and dance sequences and provides various performance opportunities within the school throughout the year.
The Maleny Hip Hop Crew will be run by Miss Abbott in the hall every Tuesday lunch break beginning in week 5. Members of this group are expected to give 100% commitment in attending every training session. Being part of the training team also gives you the possibility of performing on assemblies, local events and eisteddfods.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Maleny State School is a PBL school
What are the PBL guiding principles?
- Teaching expected behaviours through explicit instruction, with opportunities for students to practice behaviour and get feedback.
- Stepping in early can prevent more serious behaviour problems.
- Schools gather and use data to make decisions about behaviour interventions.
- School staff members are consistent in how they encourage expected behaviour and discourage misbehaviour.
Why is PBL important at Maleny State School?
- increase teaching time and improve academic outcomes
- reduce rates of inappropriate behaviour across the school
- keep the school's Student Code of Conduct updated, relevant and ensure consistent management of inappropriate behaviours
- improve the positive feeling tone (climate) of the school and classrooms.
What is the PBL team?
Maleny SS staff work together as a team to implement PBL. Our PBL team has a mission statement to ensure we keep on track.
Mission Statement: Our school community is dedicated to promoting respectful, responsible and safe learners in a caring and inclusive learning environment. Our mission is to celebrate diversity, foster resilience and support children to be their best selves.
We encourage children to:
- make good choices;
- take responsibility for their behaviour; and
- develop effective communication skills for positive participation in society.
What are our 4 Be Rules?
Be Safe; Be Respectful; Be Responsible; Be a Learner.
These 4 Be Rules are spoken about in all areas of the school by all the staff at Maleny State School. The PBL team encourages you to have a conversation with your child/children about the 4 Be’s and what they mean. Some examples of behaviours that each 4 Be means are listed below (these form our PBL lessons):
Be Safe
|
Be Respectful
|
Be Responsible
|
Be a Learner
|
Parent participation:
- If you are interested in being a parent representative on the PBL team, please let your child’s teacher know or you can email Jodie Kyte – jkyte2@eq.edu.au
Be RESPECTFUL - “First Time Every Time”
A warm welcome to our 2022 school year everyone. Although this year looks a little different, our Positive Behaviour for Learning approach stays the same. By giving all students ‘unconditional positive regard’ we help foster the best environment for learning.
A great way to start is by learning / remembering our school routines and expectations. By focussing on “First Time Every Time” it helps us to:
- Be organised and ready to start learning without any reminders.
- If asked to do something by an adult, do it without delay.
- 3,2,1 Shhhhhhh - react immediately First Time Every Time.
- Teacher needing to talk to another adult in class time- continue learning task silently.
- Do the right think in toilet areas – Be respectful, Quiet and Quick.
- Walk always on concrete areas.
- Only be in the correct areas at lunch time.
- Have a hat at school every day.
- Be Proud and Proper without the teacher having to remind you.
We are looking forward to another great year in learning together.
The PBL Team
Physical Education
Welcome to all of our new and returning families. 2022 has once again thrown us a curve ball but we are very excited about the upcoming events and activities related to sport at Maleny. This year I will be teaching both Health and Physical Education resulting in me being at the school full time. For those who are new to our school, I have been our PE teacher for over 10 years in a part time role, while working at Maroochydore State School as their PE Teacher. I am very excited to be back at Maleny full time and being able to be involved in interschool sport.
Shane Turner – PE Teacher
Prep A & Prep B
First Year of School
It is our pleasure to welcome our 2022 Prep students and their families to our wonderful school.
Students have been very busy exploring their new classrooms, getting to know their teachers and making lots of friends. They have been really quick to learn new rules and routines and have even started writing in their writing books.
They have enjoyed many stories about starting school and staying connected to their loved ones while they are away from them. Some of our favourites are “The Invisible String” by Patrice Karst and “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn.
The children had fun having their hands painted, making handprints, adding some love to go with a special poem for their parents after reading the Kissing Hand.
Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Jenny Jenkinson (Prep B)
Year 1A & 1B
Welcome Back!
Year One have been very busy this week getting to know each other and their new routines. We have been discussing our classroom rules and learning where we have Music, Library and HPE. Our classes have really enjoyed writing about our holidays, showing our teachers our reading skills and singing the days of the week. We are looking forward to getting our thinking caps on when we design and create our own boats in Science next week.
Jo Dykes (1A) and Sarah Chesney (1B)
Year 2A
Welcome to 2A 2022
A lovely warm welcome to all our families this year. We have started on a great journey together and the students are settling in really well. Ms Chamberlain and I look forward to sharing all our learning experiences together and hope to see some great gains in all of our students learning. Please don’t forget swimming starts next week on Tuesday and hats are required every day. Here’s to a great Term 1.
Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain (2A)
Year 2/3C
It is fantastic to be back at school in 2022! We have had a remarkably busy week learning routines and getting to know each other. We have started the adventure that is Fantastic Mr Fox, and we cannot get enough! We have also been telling time and learning about living things. Homework will start next week and just a reminder of swimming on Tuesdays. Please make sure your child brings a hat to school every day. Looking forward to the rest of the term with 2/3C.
Olivia Cox
Year 3A
Welcome to our firs term for 2022
It was lovely to finally meet my new students this week and introduce them to their classroom. I am pleased to state they have settled quickly and happily into class routines and have commenced their required tasks. The children appear enthusiastic to have normal routines and I am delighted by the way they have embraced learning. They have taken their homework tasks home already. It’s always exciting to be using new books and pencils.
Many thanks to the parents and carers for supplying the book packs efficiently and quickly so that we are super organised with books already labelled and in use.
Looking forward to a busy and productive Term 1 and getting to know each other a little better. Hopefully, in the near future, we will be able to invite volunteers to assist with reading.
