Principal’s Report
Year 6 Camp
This week (Wednesday – Friday) I will be heading off on camp with the Year 6 students and staff to Noosa North Shore. It is always a great experience for students and one where we focus on the importance of our school rules and values in a setting away from school, to ensure everyone on camp enjoys a valuable and challenging real-life learning experience in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Maleny Country Fair – 26 November 2021
As this event is only 5 Fridays away it is crucial we ramp up our organisation to ensure this will be a truly successful event for our entire community and profitable for our school (major P&C fundraising event of the year). Our community sponsorship has been amazing and bigger than ever before. We now ask that all families assist where possible by donating items to assist our class stalls. All donations can be taken to classes or the office.
Donations required now:
- Bottle stall prizes (small items to fit in a bottle)
- Christmas stockings and items to put in them
- Lollypops
- M&M’s (plain not nut)
- Cakes, slices, sweets wrapped with ingredients listed
- Cans of soft drinks and poppers
- Lucky Dip prizes
- Secondhand books and shopping bags to put books in (buy a bag of books)
Note: Specific items (e.g. mustard sauce, serviettes etc. Classes will request from individual students to avoid double ups)
World Teacher’s Day
This Friday is World Teacher’s Day so please join with me in acknowledging the incredibly important work our teachers do, each and every day of the week. Our Teachers do an amazing job in supporting all of our students and well and truly deserve recognition for their professional skills and supportive culture that they create for our students to thrive in.
Walk for Daniel
Recognise, React and Report - these are the key components that we teach our children to keep them safe. On Friday, we will join in with many other schools right across the nation in what is a very important safety message for all students and families. Students are asked to wear red clothing and donate a gold coin, which will be passed on to the Daniel Morecombe Foundation. As part of our Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL) we have had a specific focus for two weeks around personal safety. We teach students the components around what Recognise, Report and React mean, and how they can enact strategies in real life situations to keep themselves safe. Please take time to reinforce personal safety with your children at home and ensure that they understand what Recognise, Report and React mean and can name 5 safe adults that they would be able to turn to and seek support should they need.
This Fortnights Rule |
Be Safe |
BUZZ Phrase |
RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT |
What does RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT mean?
RECOGNISE encourages students to be aware of their surroundings and to recognise body clues in situations where they don’t feel safe.
REACT helps students to consider choices that may keep them safe or help make them safe again as quickly as possible.
REPORT encourages students to report unsafe incidents to an adult.
Please ensure all children can list 5 trusted Adults and who they would talk to at school and home that would help and support them.
P&C Meeting Lunch Time Meeting
Our next P&C meeting for the term will be held on Wednesday 10th November at 12:30pm Face to Face in the Meeting Room and face to face by Skype. Please click on the link emailed to you to join our Skype meeting. With our Country Fair only two weeks after this is an important meeting. The more parents we can have attend the better. We welcome and encourage new parents and citizens to attend our meetings.
Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

World Teachers’ Day
World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated across Australia on Friday 29 October 2021, a bit later than the International day due to our school holidays. It’s a great chance to thank teachers.
Easy ways to thank a teacher on World Teachers’ Day
The ideas below, make it super easy for you (or your child) to thank a teacher.
1. Thank you note/drawing
A short note, email or drawing from you or your child will be sure to make any teacher smile. Try thinking of something the teacher might have done recently to make it more personal.
2. Personalised card
A personalised card is another easy and thoughtful way to say thanks.
3. Simple thank you gift
Flowers from the garden, tea, apples or even a packet of native plant seeds are popular small gifts for teachers.
4. Give a virtual ‘happy’ apple
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (Aitsl) are aiming to share a million virtual apples with teachers to let them know they’re appreciated. Visit at the ink below from 14 October to add some virtual apples to their collection as a super easy way to say thanks. Click on the apples that are tumbling down the screen and see how many you can grab in 30 seconds to add to the million apples target!

The 29th October is also our Day for Daniel Walk. We encourage students to Wear Red and Donate a gold coin donation with all proceeds raised going to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Day for Daniel is Australia's largest child safety awareness and education day.
Our walk will occur on our school oval with all students meeting in the oval shed at 9:00am to walk proud in their red colours around the oval.
Our goal is to make Australia a safe place for all children.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Recognise, React and Report – Be Safe
Our latest BUZZ Phrase this term is a Be Safe rule to coincide with Day for Daniel on Friday 29th October “Recognise, React and Report”.
This means:
- Our bodies can tell us CLUES when we don’t feel safe.
- We can run away from danger or scream out loudly.
- We can get help from an adult, the school Principal, a teacher, our parents and grandparents.
- I can ring 000 to get the police.
As we get older, we also need to remember to always tell someone:
- Where are you going.
- What time you will be home.
- Who you are with.
- If you change your plans.
Remember to talk about with your parents, carers or trusted adults about:
- Safety rules
- Body clues
- Discuss your Safety Network.

Year 4A & 4B
Creating and Enjoying Drama!
The year 4’s, have been very busy completing their written responses to a chapter of Rowan of Rin and explaining our observations. In Drama, we have been focusing on writing a script for an extra scene to the story. Last week we were very lucky to have Locky Pountney (Riley’s cousin) who is a first year Drama student from Sippy Downs University come to talk to us about Performance. He demonstrated different skills required when performing to an audience. We know that the audience has a special responsibility to support the actors as well. We thoroughly enjoyed the session, and it was wonderful to have Locky give up his time and to be so enthusiastic and encouraging of the students.
This week the students have been working in their groups to complete their own scripts and fine tune their performances. We have been practicing on the stage in the hall and will start presenting to the class tomorrow and next week.
This week we have been learning about Advertising for our English unit. We have been watching different ads and identifying the language features used to persuade us to buy their product. We understand that exaggeration, commands, special offers and jingles all have a purpose to manipulate the audience to spend their money!

Year 4/5C
English
This term we are investigating Humorous Poetry. This has involved experimenting with poetic devices and language features. We have really enjoyed sharing Puns (and some really BAD Dad Jokes):
RIP boiled water, you’re mist. (Latrell)
What did the mouse say to the keyboard? “You’re not my type”
(Latrell).
Did you hear about the two beans travelling around Australia? They ended up
in Cairns. (Ashton)
What do you call a rabbit with lice? Bugs Bunny (Olivia)
Why did the tomato blush? It saw the salad dressing.
What did the cop say to his belly button, “You’re under a vest!”
(Archer)
The real estate salesman was showing a house to a lady. She asked “What’s
upstairs?” The real estate salesman replied, “The stairs don’t talk sorry.”
(Johnathon)
What did the traffic light say to the truck? “Don’t look, I’m changing.”
(Sunny, Toby)
Why was baby strawberry crying? Because mum and dad strawberry were in a
jam. (Kai)
What did baby corn say to mummy corn? “Where’s Pop corn?”
Why did the orange lose the race? It ran out of juice. (Zoe)
Science
Both year levels are currently investigating Matter. The Year 4 students are looking at the properties of Matter and the Year 5 students are looking the different states of matter. Here are some photos from recent experiments: Oobleck and Soft Drink Fizz.

Garden Club Members are preparing to showcase our whole school Recycling Program to the Community for Recycling Week in November.
This week the students have been busy completing some weeding in the garden. Some of our plants have gone to flower and have grown wild so we have been cutting back and adding cuttings to the compost bin. We have also replaced succulents in our vertical gardens and have admired the sunflowers growing that the Prep and Year One classes planted before the holidays. The pathway is taking shape…..

Our Wonga Wonga vine is at the top of the fence now and our Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine is also growing well.
Our Sustainability leaders and Garden Club members have been busy designing pamphlets for our school stall for Recycling week in the town centre on the 10th November. We have been busy brainstorming all the great things we do to reduce our carbon footprint at Maleny State School.

Some of our Garden Club members have volunteered to talk with the public and showcase our recycling systems at our school.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
