Principal’s Report

Welcome to Term 4

It is wonderful to be back fully refreshed and energised after taking a couple of weeks long service leave and relaxing in the Whitsundays with my wife. I am full of life (not quite on the level of some of our younger students) and ready to tackle one of our busiest and most important school terms.

This week is Queensland Mental Health Week, with the theme being Take Time for Mental Health. The theme recognises the importance of taking time to engage in activities that boost our mental health and encourages help-seeking behaviours, when needed.

Research shows there are six simple actions we can take to improve our moods, build resilience, and boost wellbeing. These simple actions are from the Queensland Government’s Dear Mind initiative and are based on the internationally recognised Wheel of Wellbeing. Regularly practicing these actions is beneficial for everyone. Children and staff will be able to take part in a range of experiences which support wellbeing and help children understand the importance of being as healthy as they can be.

Book Week and Special Assembly

We are also celebrating Book Week and will conduct a special assembly this Thursday, 14 October at 9:00am in Mick’s Shed on the senior oval to enable students to display and see others costumes. Parents are welcome to attend.

Mr Grieg has organised a number of activities for students to participate in the Library throughout the week.

Welcome to the 2021 Maleny Country Fair!

Proudly brought to you by our 3 local Primary Schools....

After the cancelling of many community and not-for-profit events and fund-raising activities since the Pandemic commenced, the local Primary Schools' Parents' Associations have come together, as one, in the spirit of cooperation and mutual support to re-imagine a Country Fair that is open to everyone in our local communities.

This renewed and expanded event will see the Maleny State School’s main oval transformed, for one evening, into a traditional ‘Village Green’ filled with stalls offering fresh food and favourite homemade treats, assorted games, a licenced bar, sideshow rides and other attractions (e.g. Mobile Farm, Fire Engine, Croquet, Sports Clubs, parading of the TS Centaur Naval Cadets, etc) along with a packed Entertainment Program featuring local community groups, school bands, choirs, dance groups and associated professional performers.

Through combining all 600 students and their families across all three primary schools in our 4552 postcode AND opening the ‘Village Green’ to everyone, the Maleny Country Fair will join the Maleny Agricultural Show and the Maleny Commerce Christmas Street Party as the only three family-friendly events catering to the youngest through to those who are ‘young-at-heart’ in our local communities.

The Maleny Country Fair is open to the Public and entry is free.

This year, the event will be cashless for the games, food and beverage stalls. As these stalls will be operated by three different Schools, it has been decided to use a common pricing structure across all stalls and have one cashier (located in the Shed) and float for the whole event where cash, cards and mobile devices can be used to purchase Stall Tickets on the day.

Stall Tickets can now be pre-purchased through the online Store and can either be delivered to your child’s classroom or collected at the Admission Gate on the day (you will need to show your purchase receipt at the time of collection).

To learn more about the Maleny Country Fair and to pre-purchase Stall Tickets and heavily discounted Rides Wristbands, go to the link below:

Leaving our school or have a 2022 Prep student enrolling

Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2022 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2022 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

2022 Classes

Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4

Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by Friday 22 October 2021 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2022. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and an incredible amount of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests.

Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form. Any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered. Once classes are formulated changes will not be made.

Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2022 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one-minute phone call (Ph: 5499 8333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2022. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2022 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

Prep Enrolment Interview Dates:

If you have not booked your Prep enrolment interview please do so as soon as possible.

Interviews will be held on Wednesday 20 October, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 October.

Please Call 5499 8333 to book your 20 min interview with your child. Collect enrolment forms from office or download from the School Web Site.

Welcome to Prep and Transition Days

Students need to be enrolled to attend our Transition Days on the 3, 10 and 17 of November from 9:00am to 10:00am. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with Good Start Centre staff.

P&C Meeting

Our next P&C meeting for the term will be held this Wednesday 13th October (Term 4 Week 2) in the school Innovation Centre (face to face and by Skype) at 6:00pm. Please click on the link emailed to you to join our Skype meeting. We welcome and encourage new parents and citizens to attend our meetings.

Have a Magic week in Maleny.

2022 School Leadership Positions

Last term Year 5 students were officially introduced to the first phase of their leadership journeys: their ‘Leadership Passport’.

Students in Year 5 who wish to nominate for leadership positions in 2022 require this as part of their nomination process. The students know that at Maleny State School we are looking for leaders who represent the school across a variety of activities. To be eligible to nominate for leadership positions in Year 6, students must; follow the 4Bs, wear their uniform correctly and attend school regularly and use their Passport to show as many examples of the responsibilities and commitments that they engage in as a responsible student at Maleny State School.

Students can nominate for a number of leadership roles in 2022:

School Captains/Vice Captains
House Captains/Vice Captains
Music Captains
Sustainability Captains

Student Council Positions will be decided at the beginning of next year.

All Year 5 students received an information package at the beginning of last week outlining the nomination and election process and timelines.

The process for the election of School Captain positions this term, will include completing a nomination form and 1 typed page detailing how they plan to fulfil their role as a school leader and how they meet the criteria, with Passport included. Students who are shortlisted will then take part in an interview process. Students shortlisted after this process will be required to present speeches to staff at a staff meeting, and the Year 4/5 student bodies.

The qualities that we value in our school leaders at Maleny State School are:

  1. Shows an interest in and participates in school activities.
  2. Is helpful to fellow students and teachers.
  3. Has or can develop leadership qualities.
  4. Demonstrates good behaviour.
  5. Is reliable and trustworthy.
  6. Can communicate effectively amongst all year levels.

We wish all our Year 5 students the best of luck in their leadership journeys this term.

Paula Heiniger – Deputy Principal

Belated Book Week Celebrations

A reminder that our belated Book Week 2021 celebration themed 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds' is on this week. During the week we are planning on a range of daily activities that kids may participate in, but the highlight of the week will be a dress up day on Thursday 14th October. Students will be able to come dressed as a favourite character on that day. We will be looking out for any costumes on the day that fit into the theme. In the Innovation Centre at lunch times we will be hosting, once again, the ‘draw with’ activities where student can draw, along with authors/illustrators, and create some awesome book characters. One of the draw along activities will be with ‘Draw with Rob’ series, an immensely popular series. Check out the Youtube playlist link below.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYbUsFfT50EI-5luLJ7mBzGIlummnjwby

In the meantime, it will give everyone the opportunity to dust off some old costumes or plan for something new for the week.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Welcome back to term Four - what a year.

PBL Fortnightly Focus: Play Fair

That means:

  • I will play fairly and for fun not win at all costs.
  • I will co-operate with my friends.
  • I will take turns when playing games.
  • I will follow the rules.
  • I will share and show respect.
  • I will be a modest winner and good loser.
  • I will help those still learning to play.
  • I will include all in games and not exclude others.
  • I will speak appropriately to all.
  • I will walk away and cool down by myself if I get frustrated.
  • I will seek a teacher on duty’s assistance if a problem arises.

From the PBL Team

Prep A & Prep B

Move It Move It

To introduce our science unit we shimmied, twirled, twisted and danced to the song “I Like to Move It, Move It.” We brainstormed different ways we could move our bodies and had fun moving to everyone’s different ideas. The Preps viewed a stimulus showing Australia’s First Peoples dancing. They responded to questions and shared ideas about the animals that were being represented in their movements. We enjoyed playing a game - Guess which animal I am by how I am moving?

Sunflower Pathway

Last term we planted a sunflower pathway in our school garden. We used the seeds from the sunflowers grown by last year’s Prep students, our current Year 1’s. The Year 1 and Prep students created some sunflower bunting to hang along the path until our sunflowers grow. We made sunflower diaries to record their growth. We can’t wait until the sunflowers are as tall as the children!

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)

Year 2A & 2B

Welcome back to term 4!

We have a busy term ahead. Please remember that assessments will begin from week 5. It is important that children are at school as much as possible unless they are sick. Next Wednesday we have our school history incursion. 2B will be at 9am until 10am and 2A from 10 am until 11am. Children will be immersed in a range of activities from the past. We do need a few parents for this activity so if you can help, please let your class teacher know ASAP.
