Principal’s Report
Where has the year gone? It is almost the end of another term, with only one more term of 2021 left. Once again it has been a busy but exciting 10 weeks. As we finish the term we have lots to acknowledge. Last week we were able to view our preliminary Naplan results and our Year 3 and Year 5 students have done exceptionally well, particularly in the area of writing, which had been our focus. The table below is a quick summary of our results.
Year 3 Writing |
Year 5 Writing |
Above Nation in mean, top 2 band % and NMS |
Above the nation in the top 2 band % |
Highest Mean Scale Score ever - 426 |
Above the state in the mean scale score |
Lowest ever in the bottom 2 bands |
Highest mean scale score ever - 480 |
Highest ever top 2 bands – 55% |
Equal to National average - mean |
Highest ever top 2 bands |
Year 3 and 5 students will receive their Naplan reports at the start of next term.
We recently held our first school disco in over a year, which was well supported, thank you to the volunteers and staff who helped out on the night. There were some amazing glam rocker outfits.
Last week we paid tribute to our amazing teacher aides and support staff during ‘Teacher Aides and Support Staff week’, the gratitude shown to each of these wonderful people shows clearly just how much they are valued and that we would be lost without them.
On Thursday 9 September, as a staff we wore yellow as part of RU OK? Day. The message of this year’s day was Are they really OK? Ask them today. If there is someone out there, adult or child, that you haven’t checked in on, make the time today. For more information on starting the conversation and supporting someone in need go to:
https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day
I would also like to thank Mrs McMahon for organising and running our Father’s Day stall. I am sure there were many Dads out there that loved the gifts that they received. In 2022 we welcome some volunteers to assist Mandy with the stall.
This week we have our Colour Fun Run to look forward to, I can’t wait to be colour bombed!
Happy early holiday to Mr Byrne
John is currently on long service leave for the remainder of this term and is hopefully having a wonderful time swimming, snorkelling and relaxing.
Supporting our School through the Parent and Community Code of Conduct
Our school strives to be a safe place for students to learn and for staff to work. We have a staff code of conduct and a student code of conduct and to continue this support, we have adopted a Parent and Community Code of Conduct so that all visitors to our school can understand what is expected of them. This Code was presented to our community at our last P&C.
The Parent and Community Code of Conduct sits alongside our Student Code of Conduct and the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service which applies to all staff.
A copy of the new Code can be found at:
https://education.qld.gov.au/parents-and-carers/community-engagement/parent-and-community-code-of-conduct
We have 10 simple expectations of parents, carers and visitors that help to keep our school a safe place to learn and work.
Congratulations to Mr Greig
Congratulations to Mr Greig on being selected as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert for 2021-2022! Each year, Microsoft selects Innovative Educator Experts to be part of this exclusive global community paving the way for their peers to share ideas, try new approaches, and learn from each other. This is the second year in a row where Adrian has been selected as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert.
Farewell and happy retirement to Mrs Rapley
We also congratulate Mrs Trachel Rapley our Business Manager who will retire at the end of this term. Trachel has been a valuable member of our school team since 2013 and she has worked for the Department of Education for close to 26 years. Trachel is one of the most professional, organised and efficient business managers I have worked with and I know that Mr Byrne has also found Trachel to be an incredible support to himself, the school and P&C in her role as Business Manager and her vast knowledge and experience will be missed by the whole school community. We wish Trachel all the best in this next chapter of her life as she makes the move to live an idyllic life in the bush.
Happy holidays to you all
Once again, this term Covid hit us and we had to endure a lockdown in week 5. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that we have a holiday break that is clear of lockdowns and that there is beautiful weather to experience the magic that is around us all in this great State of ours. Enjoy the time with your families and we look forward to seeing you all again next term.
Have a magical holiday from Paula (Acting Principal)

Lost Property
Parents and carers, please ask your children to check lost property before the holidays. Unclaimed items will be taken away on the last day of term, washed and donated to Maleny Salvation Army Family Store. Currently there are a lot of jumpers without names (approx 30), some which have been in lost property for many weeks. Miss Mandy took some photos of a few items that may be recognisable:
Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Respectful - “First Time Every Time”
As we head towards the end of Term 3, we are revisiting the Buzz Phrase “First Time Every Time”. This is a great simple and effective buzz phrase across all areas of learning, inside and outside the classroom.
That means:
- Caring for all property
- Following adult instructions
- Respecting the right of other students to learn
- Respecting the right of teachers to teach
- Using good manners
- Having self-control
Enjoy a safe and happy Spring Holiday!
PBL Team
Year 4A & 4B
Using our Imaginations!
The students have been enjoying reading our quest novel – Rowan of Rin by Emily Rhodda. Some of the 4A students have been plotting out the journey and illustrating the different chapters in the text. This has helped the Year 4’s to visualise the journey. 4A completed colourful and expressive dragon eyes.

OUT IN THE GARDEN
It has been fantastic for the classes to be out in the garden completing our new wicking beds and creating designs for a dipping stick to measure water supply.

The students had to brainstorm risks and think of safety strategies for working in the garden to build the wicking bed. We have learnt what some new vocabulary e.g. reservoir and void which is where the water sits at the bottom of the wicking bed.
The gardens are all completed, and we look forward to seeing the new growth after the holidays.

Technology
Year 4 students have been working with Mr Greig for Technology this year. For the Technologies unit this term students are investigating traditional and modern gardening techniques and how this can benefit people today when starting their own gardens. Children have been visiting the school Garden Club to investigate and set up the new wicking beds. Of course, there is always work to do. Weeding never stops of course. Learning to be safe and responsible with tools is also one of the activities being covered. The kids are really enjoying getting outdoors and seeing what goes on in the garden. This week we are also continuing our use of Microsoft Excel (which students get for free for home use along with the rest of the Microsoft Office suite ) and how we can use the software to track the recycled containers collections at school.

This term Year 5 have been looking at Digital technology. Recently we have started coding using Scratch. Next term for our assessment we will use our knowledge and skills to code a maze game for younger students.
Science
Recently Year 4 students have been investigating Friction as a force. Here are a number of photos as we experimented with push and pull forces on different surfaces.

Year 5 completed their unit on light by creating a maze in a shoebox and reflecting light through the maze. Here are some photos of construction and the testing stages.

Belated Book Week Celebrations
In the 2nd week back from the Sept-Oct school holidays we will be celebrating a belated Book Week. The theme for Book Week 2021 is 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds'. During the week we are planning on a range of daily activities that kids may participate in, but the highlight of the week will be a dress up day on Thursday 14th October. Students will be able to come in dressed as a favourite character on that day. We will be looking out for any costumes on the day that fit into the theme. More information on the week's activities early next term. In the meantime, it will give everyone the opportunity to dust off some old costumes or plan for something new for the week.

Our New Bird Boxes for the Rainforest
Last week we watched Angus and Dominic who are arborists, secure the bird boxes in some of the taller trees in the rainforest. The boxes are for owls and parrots to use and nest in. The students asked many questions and enjoyed the afternoon.

This week we have been busy adding seedlings (corn, beetroot, zucchini, rocket, thyme and capsicum) to the new wicking beds and the vertical gardens. Garden club members have made decorative signs to inform people visiting our special garden and have prepared some of the wicking beds.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Totally Epic Fun Club
During the first week of the September holidays, I am helping direct a wonderful day “camp” at Beerwah called Totally Epic. The program has been running for its 7th year now and has a Medieval theme. It will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the FIRST WEEK and held at the Baptist Church on the Glasshouse Christian College campus. If you would like more information, please call Chappy Becky at the school.
Be Brave
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at SECOND LUNCH, I run a very fun program I’ve called, BE BRAVE. The purpose is to encourage children to develop courage and overcome some of their fears of being in front of people. I always tell them that every person has something they are good at and it’s an opportunity to stand on a stage and speak into a microphone. Most of the acts involve lip syncing, dancing or singing, however it can be as “mundane” as speaking about themselves, or running at their top speed in the hall. Whatever the talent, I want your child to have an opportunity to show it. Parents, if your child is good at singing or beat boxing, dancing, humming - WHATEVER it may be, please encourage them to come to Chappy games in the SECOND lunch and be brave.
