Principal’s Report

Colour Fun Run – New Date – 15 September 2021

Register and start collecting sponsors now!

Due to disruptions caused by our recent lock-down and current restrictions, the P&C Colour Fun Run has been postponed and re-scheduled to 15 September 2021 (restrictions permitting). This is a major fundraising activity for the P&C for 2021, with the money raised going to support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) in the school curriculum. All children in all levels of the school will benefit from the funds raised.

The recent lockdown shows how planned fundraising, such as the Term 4 Maleny Country Fair, can be cancelled at short notice. It makes the Colour Fun Run critically important to support enhancements to ALL students experience and learning at school. Please help your children participate through registering on-line and raising funds.

Student Competition Ends Tuesday 14 September (this has been extended)

Online Registration Prize:

  • Class with highest percentage of students registered online will win Free Popcorn for all class members.

Highest amount raised Prize:

  • Class with highest amount of funds raised (avg per student) and registered online by 14 September will win Ice Cream Sundaes for all class members. (Free Tuckshop Pizza Lunch and a Week of no duties, redeemable Term 4, for their Class Teacher)

Currently we are well behind our $20 000 target, we are hoping with an extra 2 weeks to fundraise we will still meet this goal. It will require many more students to register and commence fundraising if we are to be successful.

Classroom Air Conditioning

This week our Air Conditioning team have commenced the installation of our reverse cycle air conditioners in classrooms. School blocks will be completed one at a time and all classes in that block will be relocated during installation (this could be up to 4 days). We will be utilizing the Innovation Centre and our LOTE (Japanese) Rooms to relocate classes.

Blocks with 4 classes (Yrs 5/6 and 3/4) and the Prep classrooms will be completed during the September holidays. We are aiming to implement this roll out within our school with minimum disruption to staff and students. Come summer I am sure you will agree a little disruption now will certainly be worth it.

Father’s Day Stall 2021

This year’s Father’s Day Stall will be held in Week 8 from Tuesday 31 August to Thursday 2 September from 8:15am to 8:45am and it will be run from the Uniform Shop. Please see P&C parent Mandy McMahon (contact the office 54998333) if you can assist during this week. A huge thank you to Mandy for coordinating this event this year.

Note Friday 3rd Sept is a Pupil Free Day.

Pupil Free Day – 3 September 2021

Please note that Friday 3 September is a Pupil Free Day for all State Schools. Our teachers will be participating in professional development and planning activities on this day.

Disco – 2 September 2021

Our Disco is planned for Thursday 2 September, the night before the Pupil Free Day in Week 8. At this stage we are not allowed to host this event due to Covid restrictions. We are hoping these restrictions may be lifted so this event can proceed. We will communicate by email as soon as we have been made aware of any relaxation of restrictions around events like discos.

District Athletics – Maleny SS First Place

Two weeks ago, 42 Maleny State School students competed at the annual Glasshouse District Athletics Carnival. 17 other schools in the district converged on Beerwah State High School to battle it out in all disciplines.

Overall, it was a successful day for the school with Maleny finishing first on average (points divided by students at school) and second overall. The students were well-behaved and enthusiastically cheered on their school and friends. Our students should be very proud of their efforts.

Individual Achievements:

12yr Boys Runner Up Age Champion- Byron
12yr Girls Runner Up Age Champion- Savannah
11yr Boys Age Champion- Elijah

Additionally, we had 7 students selected in the Glasshouse District Athletics team to compete at the Regional trials in September. Unfortunately, the Regional and State trials have now been cancelled for 2021.

Prep Incursion – The Rainforest Experience

Prep students were captivated by their recent incursion, especially the talking tree and rainforest animals. They learned to Stop, Look and Listen and the importance of our rainforest trees and animals. Teachers will build on these concepts with students and utilize our own school rainforest to consolidate concepts.

This incursion was fully funded by our P&C and one we would look at again next year. We are very grateful for the financial support of the P&C allowing all Prep children to attend free of charge.

New PA System donated by our P&C

We wish to sincerely thank our P&C for everything they do for our students and the school. This is highlighted with a new PA system being donated recently by our P&C. This system will be used in a variety of settings from sports days, discos and the country fair.

Year 6 Relationships Education Sessions

Thank you to our P&C for funding our Year 6 True Relationships and Productive Health - Sunshine Coast (formerly known as Family Planning Queensland) sessions regarding Human Relationships Education (Sexuality Education) for our Year 6’s this term.

Reminder of Birthday Celebrations at School

Our P&C, along with the school, promotes healthy food choices for any celebration.

Please note that our policies changed last year in relation to the sharing of communal food. This has an impact on practices around birthdays that would have been acceptable in the past.

Students are allowed to bring in commercially made and individually wrapped items to be distributed by the teacher e.g. cupcakes purchased from a shop or ice blocks. The tuckshop can organise ice blocks with notice. Students are not allowed to bring in food made at home e.g. cupcakes, slices, biscuits etc. or distribute party bags etc.

New P&C Meeting Time

Thank you to the new faces that joined us at our August General Meeting by Skype. The stronger our attendance ensures a greater range of ideas and opinions which makes our P&C even more effective.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 8 September and it will hopefully be face to face, We will communicate this closer to the date.

Thank you

Thank you to all parents for complying with our current rules around not entering the school and the adjusted pick up and drop off times. Interestingly we have seen a much calmer transition to school for students of a morning and leaving school of an afternoon. We are very proud of the independence and resilience that our Preppies have shown which is an excellent lead into Year One.

There is always a positive in every situation we face and difficult situations become much easier when there are smiling faces around all working together. Well done Maleny.

Have a Magic Week in Maleny.
John

From the Deputy Principal

Helping your child with their learning at home

When your child becomes overly frustrated with their learning or with their homework, the best way to solve this is to create a plan to tackle it. This can be done by:

  • reading through and understanding the homework task
  • breaking the homework task into smaller logical chunks
  • discussing how much time is required to complete each chunk
  • working backwards from the deadline and creating a timeline
  • putting the timeline somewhere where your child can see it
  • encouraging your child to mark completed chunks to see the progress made on their task

If issues still persist, please discuss with your child’s class teacher.

But a parents’ ability to support their child’s learning goes beyond helping with homework. Parents can engage their child in discussions, read with them, and provide them with other ongoing learning opportunities (such as going to a museum, watching a documentary or spending time online together).

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

PBL - Fortnightly Focus / Rules
This Fortnights Rule Be a Learner - BUZZ Phrase Bounce Back

That means: If I keep on doing the same thing I will get the same result.

Building resilience is the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress.

We need to help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

  • Take some time out to cool down
  • Use positive talk, I will be ok, I am ok, I will bounce back
  • Talk to someone (friend, teacher)
  • I can identify and manage my emotions
  • I am a problem solver – talk, negotiate, scissors/paper/rock, seek teacher help
  • I use my support network to bounce back
  • I can recognise feelings in myself and others and I am compassionate
  • I can label and track the physical signs of different emotions within myself
  • I will use a range of self-management strategies to act in an appropriate way

Thanks, have a great fortnight.

Year 4A & 4B

Great To Be Back!!!

Well the week before last week was a very quiet one and we certainly missed all the class being here! Well done to everyone for working hard at home. The weather was absolutely beautiful and it was great to hear many of our students were enjoying the outdoors. Will, Tyler and Zade helped empty the compost bin in the garden area and then spread it into the garden beds. They did a great job weeding and finishing off another bee hotel.

This week we will finish off writing our historical recount and getting ready to present them orally to the class.

For Technology all Year 4 classes spent a session sorting through the waste bin to check if the students were using all recycling bins correctly. In each eating area of the school, we have a compost bin, chook bin for meat and bread scraps, ten cent container bag, soft plastic tub as well as our large yellow recycling bin. We will be collecting data on our ten cent containers and each class will have to complete a summary of which containers raise the most money for our school. The Year 4 classes will complete an excel spreadsheet to represent our data.

This week we will be investigating how wicking beds are used for gardening and reducing water wastage. The students will be constructing four wicking beds for our Prep classes to use. This week the students will be designing a dipping stick that can show measurement of water in our wicking beds. They must create something that is durable, weather-proof and include measurement marks. Last week 4B looked at an oil dipstick in a car. We could see the marks on the dipstick that told us if the oil was low or at the right level.

In Music, the students have been learning how to play the Marimbas and they are all becoming very confident at playing different combinations of notes and echoing different rhythms to music. Thanks so much Mrs G!

Year 4/5C

Week 4 = Home Learning

Thank you to everyone who completed work at home and at school. There was a range of how this learning was accessed - paper, online and face to face. Quite a few students used TEAMS and accessed their work, chat and collaboration features within it. Congratulations to those who had a go. It was a steep learning curve for all of us and we will continue using it in our classroom now to help with separate year level tasks. Here is how we stayed connected with our favourite and memorable moments of the Olympics.

Science

The Year 5 students have been studying light. Recently students in 5A and 5C made periscopes in groups, then used them to see how the light reflecting off mirrors at different angles made the periscope work.

The Year 4 students have been looking at forces. Here are some photographs of our recent magnetic forces investigations.

Council Visit - Talk about Extreme Natural Events/Disasters

Recently Lynda from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council visited the Year 5 classes to talk about being prepared for extreme events like storms, floods and cyclones. Students participated in quizzes and looked at images of local places and the impact extreme events have had on those locations. Students also received a bag with extra information and goodies.

Deb Darcy (4/5C)

War on Waste

Many Thanks to Julieann and Merrick. This week the garden club members planted a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine and a Wonga Wonga Vine on the fenced area in our garden. We are very grateful to have such supportive parents who have kindly donated plants and bird boxes to our school rainforest. Thank you so much Julieann and Merrick for your support and generosity.

New vegetable seedlings were planted and our second bee hotel is ready to be installed in the rainforest.

It was lovely to have the garden club kids back at school last week and to enjoy their enthusiasm in the garden.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Build Others Up

I was reading a practical and encouraging text the other day which I would like to share with you. It was all about what attracts people to us and highlighted a few key things that may be causing the opposite of this to be happening in our lives. The first point was about PRIDE. Nobody wants to follow someone who thinks they’re better than everyone else. INSECURITY. If you are uncomfortable with who you are, others will be too. MOODINESS. When people never know what to expect from you, they stop expecting anything. PERFECTIONISM. Others respect the desire for excellence but dread unrealistic expectations. CYNICISM. People don’t want to be rained on by someone who sees a cloud around every silver lining.

SO how do you build others up? The first thing is to change your focus or perspective. If we are self-centred we cannot strengthen and encourage others, so become self-aware. Observe how you are interacting with people over the next few days and notice how much you talk about yourself then decide to change that. And lastly, try to make a good first impression. Choose to learn a person’s name and ask what their interests are. Listen to them and be encouraging. You can make a difference in this troubling time so be a person of positive influence!

Have a great week everyone.

BREAKFAST CLUB

There will be no Breakfast Club for the next 2 weeks, however, there will be two breakfasts per week after this as the YMCA has kindly provided some sponsorship.
