Principal’s Report

Lockdown Extended

As you would be aware, the Premier has this week announced that we will be extending the current lockdown until 4pm Sunday 8 August 2021.

I will continue to email parents with updates as they come to hand.

We have refined our approach to online learning and will be using a more personalised approach this time. Please monitor your emails and stay in daily contact with your children’s teachers to enable learning to continue during this period. Our staff have been working tirelessly to organise. plan, create and copy learning materials for students online, hardcopy and at school all in one day. This has been an amazing effort. This lockdown does have a number of different complex issues that schools need to cater for that we haven’t had to consider in the past. We do request that only students of essential workers and students that are vulnerable attend face to face to ensure we can safely and effectively cater for all students with our current reduced workforce at present. As a school community we have managed previous lockdowns extremely well and I am confident we will do so again.

Access to school is not permitted outside school hours

Sadly, last weekend we had some unwanted visitors to our school who caused quite a lot of damage and some graffiti to a number of areas including buildings and our rainforest area. Our chook pen was their primary target where they destroyed new netting recently put in place and the actual wooden structure where the chooks have roosted safely for many years. Evidence would suggest that this is the third week in a row that trespassers have been in the school grounds and on these occasions only minor damage was caused. A pink scooter, blue males push bike and a soccer goal post were thrown on the chook pen roof and netting, along with several bricks and large rocks used to damage this area. Fortunately, our chooks were unharmed, although they would have experienced quite a deal of trauma from having their walls bashed in. Thankfully Mrs D is looking after our award-winning chooks and providing them a safe home until we can repair the damage caused. The police are investigating this incident for us. In my 9 years at the school I have been so thankful and proud that vandalism has never been an issue at our school (as unfortunately it is a reality for many schools on a regular basis). If you ever notice suspicious activity occurring at the school please contact school watch 131788 or the police immediately.

Parent Opinion Surveys – We value your Feedback

The School Opinion Survey has been extended to Friday, 6 August 2021.

Currently only 17% of parents have responded. We really value your feedback as it helps us to continually improve our school processes and ensure we know what things we do that you value. The more responses we receive the more representative these views will be of our whole school community.

Parents will have received a link to this survey by email 2 weeks ago. Please take the time to complete this survey as your feedback is extremely important to us.

Colour Fun Run – Register online now!

Currently only 54 students are registered online with 36 of them actively raising funds.

This event is quickly getting closer as the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day is on Wednesday 25th August 2021.

Step 1 is to register your children online so they have an ‘online profile’.
Step 2 participate on the day, this is the best bit, Wednesday 25 August at 1:30.
Step 3 is to collect from sponsors, money due back 26 August.
Step 4 select a prize and order this online 26 Aug – 2 Sep.

To get our event off to a flyer, we’re starting with a super easy competition! The class with the greatest percentage of online profiles registered by 20th August 2021 will win a class treat. To help your child’s class win, simply create your profile at the link below:

https://www.schoolfunrun.com.au/

Online Registration Prize:

  • Class with highest percentage of students registered will win Free Popcorn for all class members.

Highest Amount Raised Prize:

  • Class with highest amount of funds raised (avg per student) by 25 August will win Ice Cream Sundaes for all class members.

White T-Shirts:

This year, the P&C have specifically sourced the cheapest plain white T-shirts for the children to wear – starting at $3! They have been able to price-match Big Chain Stores and make them available here, in the School for your convenience.

Sizes 01-09 are $3 each and sizes 10-16 are $4 each.

If you are happy with the price on this limited special offer, why not order some extras for your family or friends!!

Secure your child's T-shirt now in the  Store  before pre-orders close at 5pm on Monday 9th August. Orders cannot be accepted after this time as the dispatch and delivery of pre-ordered T-shirts must occur before the event!

We hope you will support our school and students in fundraising to enhance the educational outcomes of all students at Maleny State School in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM).

Thankyou Kylie McAuliffe for co ordinating this event along with Kath Fernance, much appreciated.

Spelling Competition

It was great to see so many students participating and having fun in our spelling competition recently. Warenga for the third year in a row were once again crowned our spelling champions. This event is all about valuing the skill of learning how to spell, having fun and achieving success by participating in small groups. The spelling challenges and quiz style games are designed at the ability level of each individual. Students from each year level were presented with their medals last week at a special assembly. Congratulations to all students that participated and to Mr Heiniger who coordinated this event along with the assistance of our staff.

New P&C Meeting Time

Thank you to the new faces that joined us at our July General Meeting. With a stronger participation of a morning it has been decided that our August Meeting (Wed 11 August) will be held at 8:50am. Parents dropping students off early are encouraged to grab a friend and come for a coffee and chat before the meeting from 8:30am in the Innovation Centre. The stronger our attendance ensures a greater range of ideas and opinions which makes our P&C even more effective.

Have a Magic Week in Maleny.

The Read Aloud

Many of us already know the benefits of reading aloud to our child/ren on a regular basis. But sometimes this can be hard to fit in to an already busy day. So, another option is to use websites where someone else reads the story aloud. A simple google search and you’ll find a plethora of authors reading stories. One highly recommended site is through Penguin:

https://www.penguin.com.au/articles/2744-puffin-story-time

What is lovely about this site is that they have many of Australia's favourite authors and personalities reading some of their most-loved picture books. At the moment there are a number of ‘Bluey’ books being read aloud by people such as Julia Gillard, Sam Thaiday, Jamila Rizvi and John Wood.

Six really great reasons why we should try and make the time to share books with children through reading aloud is that:

  1. Reading aloud to children creates a lifetime interest in reading.
  2. Reading to young children extends their attention spans.
  3. Reading aloud to children aids in language development.
  4. As you read aloud, the power of a child’s imagination is strengthened.
  5. Reading aloud helps build a child’s  comprehension.
  6. Last, but certainly not least, read-aloud time is great one-on-one bonding time.

But as already mentioned if you don’t always have the time to do this with your child, use the assistance of real authors who have been videoed reading some of the classic and most loved picture books!

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Be a Learner – Bounce Back!

During Week 3 and 4 we introduce a new Be a Learner Buzz Phrase “Bounce Back”. This focus helps our students to be resilient.

It means we think about:

  • I can identify and manage my emotions
  • I can problem solve
  • I can use my support network to bounce back
  • I can recognise feelings in myself and others
  • I can label and track the physical signs of emotions in myself
  • I can use a range of self-management strategies to act in an appropriate way

I can also learn:

  • How to be resilient
  • To label emotions and sensations in my body attached to emotion
  • To use a calm box or calm area in my classroom
  • To use breathing and calming strategies

Evergreen Theatre Company Visit

The Prep classes enjoyed a puppet show about the Rainforest by the Evergreen Theatre Company. We would like to thank our P & C for generously funding this experience.

The visit inspired some beautiful writing and artwork from the Preps:

The talking tree watched all the animals so the animals could be safe from people who break the trees down. Buzby, PB

The python slithered over the log and he slithered home. Jimmy, PB

The talking tree is very nice, he is very old. He looks out for the animals. Fox, PB

The cat bird made a meow sound. The tree snake slithered down the tree and upside down. Lydia, PB

My favourite part was when I learnt to be quiet in the rainforest. Violet, PA

I learnt to keep the rainforest clean. Faith, PA

I really liked the talking tree and watching the spider winding up and down and watching the frog croak. Rory, PA

I learnt that kingfishers live in the rainforest and blue bower birds collect blue things. Harry, PA

105 day party!

On Friday, Year 1 Students celebrated 105 days of learning in Year 1. Students enjoyed an author’s visit and then got down to party and celebrate our learning journey so far. After many cries of “this is the best day ever!” we are so pleased to see so many students happy with their time at school and we hope days like this will be cherished memories for the children.

Year 3A & 3B

Hello from Year 3

It’s hard to believe that we are well into Term 3 and again immersed in new curriculum topics. Last week our students enjoyed attending the spelling competition where it was fantastic to see them working collaboratively to achieve their highest score. It certainly brought out their competitive side. Then we had more excitement on Friday attending the author’s visit.

Don’t forget to mark August 25 on your calendar for the Colour Fun Run.

3A are planning to hold a bottle stall at the Christmas fair and need clean, plastic jars (any size). We will then fill them with treats and novelties. Jars can be left at our room from early August. Any donations are most welcome.

3B are planning to hold a Christmas Sock Stall. We would love the following donations: New Christmas socks and stockings (adults and kid's sizes) as well as small items to place in them. We would love a theme of slime and fidgets to place inside.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Chappy News

Chappy News – COMPARISON

This term I have been doing a wonderful program with the Yr 6 girls called Shine. The topic I spoke about this week was to do with the danger of comparison and what happens when we compare ourselves with unrealistic and unattainable people. We discussed the deception around social media and the trap of believing everything they see and hear. As part of this teaching, the girls watched a very short clip that DOVE soap put out years ago, depicting the use of photoshopping. The video showed a normal looking girl go through the transformation of being photoshopped. The main focus of the lesson was to encourage the girls to embrace themselves and celebrate not only their own unique and distinct differences, but to choose to celebrate the differences of others around them.

We also discussed the negative reactions we can have when we compare ourselves to others, ranging from jealousy and resentment, to acceptance and inspiration. Everyone admitted that having an attitude of acceptance for themselves, allowed them to be happy for the strengths and abilities they could see in other people. So please encourage your children to realise their own strengths and uniqueness. We all need encouraging and we all need to be told these things from the adults around us. I encourage you to reflect on what you see in your child/ren this week and verbalise that to them. Sometimes we fail to realise that a parent’s opinions matter more than anyone else’s.

BREAKING NEWS!! 2 BREAKFAST CLUBS

There will be another Breakfast Club happening on Mondays as well as Wednesdays. The school has been fortunate enough to receive funding from the YMCA to run a second breakfast. I would like to thank those volunteers who have agreed to help run this with me and if anyone would like to be part of this, please come and see me.

BE BRAVE lunch activity…every second break I run a program called BE BRAVE. Anyone is welcome to watch people brave enough to stand on the stage and sing, dance, lip sync or whatever! Come along and encourage those brave enough to participate.

Have a wonderful week!

Chappy Becky
