Principal’s Report
Welcome Back
Thank you for such a beautiful start to Term 3. Students have come back settled and teachers are eager to jump straight into learning. As Week 2 commences all students should be aware of what they will be learning in English, especially, (our school focus this year) and know what they will need to do for assessment. Ask your child to see if they can tell you. Each class will develop a ‘Learning Wall’ throughout the Unit that clearly sets out what students are learning in English with modelled exemplars of the assessment tasks they will be required to complete by the conclusion of the unit and a variety of information and word walls to support children.
Parent teacher interviews are occurring in Week 3 this Term so if you haven’t booked in for an appointment with your child’s teacher please do so asap.
As per the directions from our Health Minister until Friday 23 July.
- Students are not required to wear a face mask when on school premises or when travelling on dedicated school transport.
- School staff are not required to wear a face mask when working with children.
- Adults, including volunteers and family members, are required to wear a face mask if they cannot maintain physical distancing from each other at school (e.g. a gathering of adults in a staff room if they can’t socially distance in the room).
The COVID-19 pandemic is ever changing and the Education Dept encourages everyone to remain vigilant in staying safe and following health advice including:
- stay home if you are sick
- get tested if you have any COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild,
- wear a face mask when you can’t physically distance
- use the Check in Queensland app if attending special school events, however this is not necessary with regular drop offs or assemblies.
Parent Opinion Surveys – We value your Feedback
You are invited to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey and provide your opinions about our school. Parents and staff will have received a link to this survey by email last week. Please take the time to complete this survey as your feedback is extremely important to us.
The survey will be available until Friday, 30 July 2021 and should take less than ten minutes to complete.

Nationally Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability.
All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability.
All Australian schools participate in this annual data collection.
The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:
- number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
- level of adjustments we provide for those students; and
- broad category of disability.
Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you.
While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.
Information and fact sheets are available to help you decide from the:
- Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html
- Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability
Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact me directly.
Spelling Competition
- Our Inter-house Spelling Competition will be held this Wednesday for all year levels in our hall. Students will compete in their House Teams and we encourage them to wear their Sports Shirts on this day. This day is entirely about fun and participation, spelling words are differentiated for students and many of the activities are game based where students work together in small groups. Parents are welcome to pop in and see how this day runs.
- The timetable will be:
9:00am – Year 5 and 6
10:00am – Year 3 and 4
11:45am – Year 1 and 2
1:50pm – Prep
Term 3 Disco
Our Student Council will be holding a Disco on Thursday 2 September, please save the date. Parent helpers in the tuckshop are welcomed. Stay tuned for more information closer to the date.
Year 6 Relationships Education Sessions
True Relationships and Productive Health - Sunshine Coast (formerly known as Family Planning Queensland) will be presenting sessions regarding Human Relationships Education (Sexuality Education) for our Year 6’s this term. A parent information video link will be available for interested parents on Monday 19 July that has been sent to Year 6 parents. Student sessions are currently fully funded by our P&C for all families.
Year 6 Boys Honour and Year 6 Girls Shine Programs
Last week we commenced both our Year 6 Boys Honour and Year 6 Girls Shine Programs. Both programs look at developing student’s self-worth, inner strength and encourage students to dream and set goals. We are very excited to be offering the Honour Program to the boys for the very first time. Honour is being run by John Byrne, Greg Corkin and Greg Barry. Our successful Shine Program is being run by Chappy Becky, Peta Cave, Kylie Hulm and Emma Back.
Responding to Our School Review
Last Friday our leadership team attended a Professional Development day in Caboolture that looked at responding to our school Review in preparation for developing our next 4-year strategic plan. At our next August P&C meeting I will share the findings of the Executive Summary of our review with parents.
Working Bee Success
Thank you to Merrick, Jorg, Satoko, Greg, and Barry (along with 6 of our year 6 students) who attended our working Bee on the last Thursday of school. We replaced all of the pavers around the Gallipoli Pine at the front of the school, spread some soil and planted turf back in this area. All this was achieved in just over an hour. An excellent result and a very fulfilling sense of achievement for all involved. Much appreciated as this saved our school money and time.
Arrive on Time and Ready to Learn- Schools starts at 8:50
It is essential that students arrive at school on time and have time to organise themselves for the day. Students arriving late are required to obtain a late slip from the office before moving to class. When students arrive late they more often than not miss crucial information at the start of the day and often find it difficult to settle in quickly. With only one administration officer this also blocks our office delaying parents/clients who are required to wait for late students to be processed before they are served. This unnecessarily puts staff under presssure at one of the busiest times of the day.
Parents can support students by:
- Making sure your children get a good nights sleep
- Provide them a nutritious breakfast and food for lunch to fuel their brain
- Teach them to organise and pack what they need for school the night before
- Have a regular morning routine and get up early enough to get dressed in full school uniform, have a good breakfast, brush hair, clean teeth, get organised and out the door
New Method to Order School Uniforms
Please note the Flexischools ordering system function for uniform items is no longer available and has been replaced with the P&C online Store Flexischool ordering is currently now only available for Tuckshop items.
https://www.malenypandc.com.au/s/shop
The Uniform Shop is still currently open every Friday 8:30am – 9:00am.
Winter Uniforms
Thank you for supporting our uniform policy and expectations, our kids look quite smart in their uniforms. Well done to all parents who have purchased a school hat, black shoes, white socks and a school jumper or plain navy jumper for their children over the break. It is cold and will continue to be that way for some time. I am proud of our school and my expectation is that parents show they are as well by ensuring their children wear the correct uniform every day. Students in the incorrect jumper will be asked to take it off and use a clean secondhand jumper provided by the school ensuring that no student is ever cold or left without a jumper to wear. If finances are an issue please don’t hesitate to call me as I am very willing to assist you or a family you may know that are doing it tough. See Desley at the front office who has a number of good quality secondhand jumpers that students can borrow for free. The best way to stay warm on our coldest days is to wear layers. Jeans are not part of our uniform and should not be worn. Congratulations to the huge majority of parents that send their children to school every day regardless of the weather in the correct uniform. We very much appreciate this and see this as a sign of your support and thank you for the support that our staff give to your children every day.
New P&C Meeting Time Success
Thank you to the new faces that joined us last Wednesday at 9:00am for our July General Meeting. With 15 participants at this meeting it has been decided that our August Meeting (Wed 11 August) will also be held at 9:00am. Parents dropping students off early are encouraged to grab a friend and come for a coffee and chat before the meeting. The stronger our attendance ensures a greater range of ideas and opinions which makes our P&C even more effective. If you couldn’t make last Wednesday you will have the minutes emailed out to you if you are a member. Not a member - join up now.

A Parent Information session recording is available via this video link:

Year 5 ‘2022’ Leadership Process Begins
Students in Year 5 will begin their 2022 journey to school leadership positions this term. All students have been given a letter outlining the Leadership Passport and the process involved. The Leadership Passport document will be used to allow students to nominate themselves for leadership positions in Year 6. We are looking for leaders who represent the school across a variety of activities. To be eligible to nominate for leadership positions in Year 6 students must; follow the 4Bs, wear their uniform correctly, regularly attend school and have at least 4 examples of responsibilities or commitments that they have completed in their Passport.
Passport Process:
Students in Year 5 who wish to be considered for any leadership positions (Sports Captain, Sustainability Captain, Music Captain, Student Council or School Captain) will need to complete a passport this term.
Students who complete a leadership task or activity will need to see the teacher responsible for a signature (verifying that the task was of a leadership standard and completed fully– eg . Sports shed duty).
Once signatures have been collected by the student and the Demonstrating Leadership table is complete, students will be eligible to nominate for a 2022 Leadership position early next term.

123 Magic Parenting Course
Last call out to interested parents who would like to attend the up-coming parenting course being offered at the school this term over 3 consecutive Tuesday mornings, beginning on the 27th July. From 9am-11:00am, parents will be meeting with Peta Cave who will facilitate the course in the Innovation Centre Meeting room. The cost for the course is $10. Parents were originally going to have an invoice generated from the school but for simplicities sake, those who are attending can come to the school where payment can be made directly to Desley Cole in the office.
A workbook, morning tea and childcare for younger children will be included in the price. Please confirm with the school within the next two weeks if you are going to require the childcare service, along with the age of your infants/toddlers. I am looking forward to sharing the skills and information covered in 123 Magic to support you in your parenting role.

Year 4A & 4B
A NEW TERM BEGINS!
It was lovely to see everyone back eager to begin our new units of work. In English we have started looking at the First Fleet and we have been investigating the crimes of convict children and how life was aboard one of the 11 ships that sailed in the First Fleet.

We have started reading Eliza Bird which tells the story of a young orphan girl who was sent out to New Holland on the Lady Penrhyn and separated from her brother. It has been interesting to understand different people’s perspectives on events that changed their lives. We have used the Witness Box to incorporate drama so as to take on the role of different characters and identify their feelings.
Life was very different to our time.
During our reading rotations we have been learning about the Eora people who lived along the coastal area of what is now known as the Sydney basin in NSW. We have been reading about Bennelong who was a prominent Indigenous man who tried to build bridges with the white settlers and his people.
In the second week of the holidays our country celebrated NAIDOC week. 4A completed messages that showed the importance of this celebration.
In Maths we are investigating fractions and have been learning to order mixed and improper fractions.
In HASS we are busy learning about the continents of the world and looking at how to interpret a scale on a map.
Kerry Lees (4A), Lou Walsh & Trish Mackay (4B)
Year 4/5C
A glimpse at what’s coming up this term..
English
For our first unit this term we will be researching the Eureka Stockade and life on the goldfields to write an historical recount as a fictional character of the time. We will look at the events that lead to the Eureka Stockade and then express how a person might have felt, how they lived and what they might have done around that time.
Health
In health lessons we will be looking at cybersafety and online protocols. This will include applying strategies that can be used in online situations to ensure we feel comfortable and safe when faced with cyberbullying or online nastiness. As part of this we will explore the importance of being respectful and empathetic when online as well investigating what “personal digital footprint” means.
Deb Darcy (4/5C)
War on Waste
Our garden club members enjoyed seeing all the new growth in the garden. We finished off our second bee hotel and have been busy doing lots of weeding.

We have finished planting some native shrubs for our native bees to feast on.
Some of the garden club members finished off a new sign for the rainforest. ‘ Yuddi Guddi’ is the Jinibara word for Hello and Come in. We thought it was the perfect words for our entrance to our special and much-loved school rainforest to add with our welcome sign.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

PERSPECTIVE
Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a wonderful break and reconnected with their families. I had a very amusing scenario the other afternoon that made me think humorously about the importance of perspective in our lives. A friend was sharing with me that she had been out and about and had felt something drop onto her shoulder and scuttle down her back. She had tried to flick whatever it was out of her shirt, but soon after she felt an intense itchiness down in her “lower back” and by the time she got home and sat down to relieve herself, out fell a caterpillar! It was all very funny and we were laughing about her day and how awful it was, until my husband said, “Well not as awful as the poor caterpillar’s day!” I did find it taught me a valuable lesson about where we can choose to focus our attention. Do I choose to focus on just the negative experiences, or do I focus more on the positive aspects of my day/life. We only see the things we look for, so make a conscious effort to deliberately look for the good. I hope that you have a fantastic week
Breakfast Club
Will resume this Wednesday morning at 8am at the Tuckshop. Parent’s feel free to come over with your children and have a free breakfast. It’s a great way to get to know other adults and if you can help out once a fortnight, please let me know.
