Principal’s Report

Champion Show Chickens

Congratulations to our Poultry Club for their recent success at the Maleny Show. Students spent many hours washing and grooming our rooster and his girls to ensure they looked their absolute best for the Maleny Show. Their efforts were rewarded with two 1st and 2nd prizes being collected. Well done kids and Mrs D.

It was also great to see that many of our students were successful with their individual and class show entries in a number of categories including art, cooking and leggo.

Rock Band, Choir and Concert Band Entertainment

The highlight of my Maleny Show experiences this year was watching the performances of our school rock band, choir and concert band. Our rock band aptly named the ‘Professionals’ kicked off proceedings with their first public gig ever. Pre-show nerves disappeared and these guys smashed out two songs leaving a healthy sized crowd wanting more. Our choir, while still growing in number, sung beautifully producing a very smooth and in tune performance. It was lovely to see the excitement of students and real sense of worth from being a part of a team that was able to produce a wonderful result. Full credit to Mrs G who has spent many hours developing and supporting our rock band and choir. New students interested are welcome, just see Mrs G.

Our concert band concluded our school performances for the day and they certainly didn’t disappoint. It is wonderful to see our student’s individual musical development under the guidance of our Instrumental Music teacher Mr Nathan Hill, however to see them combine so well as a concert band was something very special. Each of them deserves to be congratulated. Thank you, Nathan, for reinvigorating our school’s participation at the Maleny Show after so many years. It was a proud moment for myself and many parents to see their children show casing their talents. The final performance of the day from the Maleny State High School Band was outstanding and great for our students to see where their music can take them in the future. Mr Hill also works at Maleny State High School and as a result has strengthened the musical collaboration between both schools.

P&C Lunchtime Meeting This Week on Wed June 9, 12:30pm -1:30pm

The P&C is trailing a lunchtime meeting this month to see if this time slot is more suitable to parents than our normal evening meetings which is a busy time for families. Please support our P&C who are keen to increase meeting membership to ensure they are as inclusive as possible and truly representative of our parent body. If you would like to help out with our Country Fair or have some new ideas please come along as we are always looking for new faces. You will also be able to SKYPE in if you are unable to attend in person. The log in link has been emailed to all parents.

Purchase your new School Jumper and School Hat

Our Uniform Shop is stocked up with new polar fleece jackets. No doubt with cool weather coming these jackets will sell quickly. Students without the correct school jumper will always be offered a clean second-hand jumper from the office until they have their own. We ask parents to wash and return the jackets to the school. A reminder that all students require a school hat every day at lunch time and for outside lessons. Please check your child has a named hat and it is in their bag each day. Hats will not be lent to students by the school.

New uniforms can be ordered through Flexischools

https://www.flexischools.com.au/

Second hand uniforms and excess stock can be ordered through the link below:

Robo Rave

Congratulations to our students that attended the Robo Rave invitational competition at the Sunshine Coast University on Sunday 30th May. Students participating have been a part of our school Lego Robotics Club this year. The aims of the day were to provide our students the opportunity to put their Lego robotics designs and coding skills to challenge in an interschool setting. The day also provided the opportunity for our students to get a glimpse of the future pathways in the STEM programs at the high school level. Our students performed very well showcasing their robotic and cooperation skills and received some excellent overall praise for their participation and behaviour from organisers. A huge thank you to Mr Adrian Grieg and Mr Dave Sanderson who prepared and coordinated students and acted as coaches on the day.

Check out the Innovation Centre New for more information, photos and even a video.

Under 8’s Day

Please come and celebrate Under 8’s Day with us next Wednesday 16 June from 9:00am – 10:30am. This year’s theme is ‘Children celebrating play and outdoor learning’. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate in activities with their children. All of our Prep, Yr 1 and Yr 2 students will participate along with kindergarten children from C&K and Good Start centres. A number of our Yr 6 students will assist with activities and support students to ensure they have a successful and memorable Under 8’s Day.

Maleny State School Scholastic Book Fair Monday 14th - 16th June

After a 1-year hiatus the Maleny State School Scholastic Book Fair is on once again. This is a major fund raiser for our Innovation Centre Library. Every purchase made by our school community puts dollars in our virtual bank to spend on new books for our school. Every year we have been able to add piles of books onto our library shelves.

How does it work?

  • On Monday 14th June, children will do a brief walk through the Book Fair with their class and write down up to 5 books on a wish list. These lists will have the book details and cost of the book they are interested in. On the back of the wish list form are the online payment details.
  • Parents can make the payments online for the books they wish to purchase (just because it is on the list, it doesn’t mean you must buy it).
  • Write the payment confirmation information (receipt number) and how much was paid onto the wish list and return it with your child to school the next day. Children can come in during the open hours and collect the books that you have paid for. If we run out of a specific title of a particular book, these are placed on back-order and usually arrive with in the week.
  • •There will also be opening hours where parents/ community can come in and purchase books. Check out the times below.
  • NB: we will NOT be accepting cash purchases. Online or EFTPOS card transactions (Debit or Credit) only will be available at the Book Fair.

Book Fair schedule:

  • Monday 14th June -
    - 9:00am – 2:50pm Student walk throughs and wish list creation.
    - 2:50pm – 4:00pm Open for parent purchasing (EFTPOS card transactions only)
  • Tuesday 15th June -
    - 8:15am – 10:00am Open for parent purchases or students wishing to bring on online payment slips to collect their books.
    - 2:50pm – 4:00pm Open for parent purchasing (EFTPOS card transactions only)
  • Wednesday 16th June - (Under 8’s Day)
    - 8:15am – 10:30am Open for parent purchases or students wishing to bring on online payment slips to collect their books.

So, come along to check out some great books and help the school get some new books in the process!

Semester One School Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week 2 of next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email shortly describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.

Language Development in Children

Learning to understand, use and enjoy language is the first step in literacy, and the basis for learning to read and write.

The best way to encourage your child’s language development is to do a lot of talking together about things that interest your child. It’s all about following your child’s lead as they show you what they’re interested in by waving, babbling or using words.

Talking with your child

From birth, talk with your child and treat them as a talker. The key is to use many different words in different contexts. For example, you can talk to your child about an orange ball and about cutting up an orange for lunch. This helps your child learn what words mean and how words work.

When you finish talking, pause and give your child a turn to respond.

As your child starts coo, gurgle, wave and point, you can respond to your child’s attempts to communicate. For example, if your baby coos and gurgles, you can coo back to them. Or if your toddler points to a toy, respond as if your child is saying, ‘Can I have that?’ For example, you could say ‘Do you want the block?’

When your child starts using words, you can repeat and build on what your child says. For example, if your child says, ‘Apple,’ you can say, ‘You want a red apple?’

And it’s the same when your child starts making sentences. You can respond and encourage your child to expand their sentences. For example, your toddler might say ‘I go shop’. You might respond, ‘And what did you do at the shop?’

When you pay attention and respond to your child in these ways, it encourages them to keep communicating and developing their language skills.

Reading with your child

Reading and sharing books about plenty of different topics lets your child hear words used in many different ways.

Linking what’s in the book to what’s happening in your child’s life is a good way to get your child talking. For example, you could say, ‘We went to the playground today, just like the boy in this book. What do you like to do at the playground?’ You can also encourage talking by chatting about interesting pictures in the books you read with your child.

When you read aloud with your child, you can point to words as you say them. This shows your child the link between spoken and written words, and helps your child learn that words are distinct parts of language. These are important concepts for developing literacy.

When to get help for language development

You know your child best. If you have any concerns about your child’s language development, ask your child and family health nurse, GP or paediatrician. They might refer you to a speech pathologist.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

It’s rocket time!!!

Our new smart goal for the rest of Term 2 is “Be Your Best Self”. This goal focusses on positive behaviour, both inside and outside the classroom. Each time a student is ‘caught’ being their best self, they get to put a ball in their class bucket. We expect to have the rocket filled halfway with balls by our next assembly. Of course, once the rocket is full, the whole school wins 20 minutes extra play time!

Be Your Best Self

This means:

  • I do my best and never give up.
  • I show commitment, pride and a positive attitude.
  • I am patient and willing to work hard.
  • I make sure to learn from my mistakes and choices.
  • I am a supportive class and school member.
  • I take responsibility of my actions and I am proud of my actions.
  • I treat myself and others with respect.
  • I am a role model to others.
  • I have a positive mindset.

Poultry Club News

Cluck, cluck, cluck….Cock-a-doodle-doo!

There has been a flurry of feathers being done at the pen this term! Our treasured fluffy friends have been busy getting glamourous for the Maleny Annual Poultry show as well as the Maleny Show.

At the Maleny Show Speckles competed against adult entries and placed 2nd!

Chicken Little, Stellar-Luna and Dotty all placed 1st in the Junior Entries section!

We were very lucky to have the local Gazette visit our school to learn, understand and share with our community the great sustainable practices that occur at Maleny State School. We even made the front page!

In Chicken Club we are a team. We all work together to achieve these great results but these results are not able to be achieved without the support of our wonderful P&C who continue to support the Poultry Club with funding and working bees. All of the kids in Chicken Club are very grateful to Mrs D for everything she has done, including bringing chickens into our friendly and caring school community.

Writing Traditional Stories with a Message

The Yr 4s are busy completing their English assessment on writing a traditional story with a message. We have read many stories from other Asian countries and have discussed the importance of doing the right thing by others. We are looking forward to sharing our stories with children in the lower school to see if they can identify the message.

In Science we are investigating life cycles and completing research on endangered species of our local area. We have enjoyed completing life cycle wheels of our chosen endangered species and illustrating the different stages.

Our caterpillars are still enjoying the cotton weed and we can now see the wings of the new butterfly through the chrysalis. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our newest monarch butterfly.

Today our butterfly arrived

The students are working well with their persuasive ad campaigns to promote our school rainforest. Each group has been busy putting their PowerPoints together including photos that they have taken and adding special effects to make their presentation more interactive.

Over the last week we have been looking at the importance of Reconciliation. The theme this year is “More than a Word. Reconciliation Takes Action.” In HASS we have been researching and discussing the devastating effects of colonisation on our First Nations people. Last week 4B completed research on a prominent Aboriginal warrior from our local area called Dundalli.

He was a very powerful and courageous man who was chosen by his people to lead the struggle against the settlers and authorities throughout the 1840’s and 50’s around South-East Queensland. We have been able to compare Dundalli to other influential warriors like Jandamarra, Pemulawuy and Bennelong.

English Persuasive Assessment

Our last unit saw students investigating the impact of palm oil farming on orangutans. After much research students wrote a persuasive multimodal article detailing their opinions on the issue. Here are a few introductions which strive to gain the reader’s attention.

“Imagine a terrified orangutan sitting alone in a bulldozed rainforest. This sounds like a nightmare but it’s true because of palm oil farming.” (Oliver)

“Imagine losing your family due to a terrifying and destructive bulldozer knocking down your family home making you wonder, are they dead, or are they alive? This is what life is like for our orangutans. You might not realise this, but our poor orangutans are smart with emotions like us, but sadly they are dying, soon to be extinct with numbers dropping rapidly.” (Hopi)

“What is more important, an orangutan or palm oil? The palm oil problem is becoming deathly for the orangutans and other animals of the rainforest.” (Olivia)

“Do you know what horrid thing you are doing? Obviously you don’t because you’re still doing it. You are killing many unique animals and you must stop! What would the world be like without half of its animals?” (Imogen)

“Do you know or ever stop to think about how horrible the impact of your actions can have on our home planet? It’s disastrous! That chocolate you ate, that soap you bought, that candle you lit are all actions that leads to habitat loss for tigers, hippos, leopards, elephants and many other animals. We are privileged to have these one of a kind creatures roaming our countries. One product in particular is having a devastating impact on the habitat of orangutans.” (Aisha)

“Orangutans are just managing to hold on to their existence as monster machines are destroying their homes in front of their eyes. Palm Oil farming is good for money but is devastating for the orangutans and their rainforest.” (Sunny)

“A beautiful paradise that has hundreds of animals and lush trees with coconuts growing on them. Well that’s not what we see.... Rainforests are dying. How you ask...because of YOU!!! We must stop destroying habitats for palm oil.” (Alfie)

Students also needed to select images which supported their opinions and helped to make the audience feel certain emotions. Here are a few that were chosen.

Deb Darcy (4/5C)

Year 5A & 5B

The Yr 5s have been busy working on their news article regarding the relocation of flying foxes at Larossa Bay. We have been very impressed with the persuasive arguments that our students are constructing and the vocabulary they are choosing to use. We are sharing some students Writing Warm up examples from this week. Students use a picture stimulus to create a writing piece of their choice within a 15-minute time frame.

Wild Horses

“A scamper of hooves padded along the grass covered soil. Icy wind whistled through the trees, lightly brushing against the clean, white coat of fur that lay over these elegant animals. Suddenly it all came to a holt. A rush of silence filled the forest air as the horses skid to a stop and began stomping their feet as if scaring something away. The gushing water of the creek nearby kept on flowing but nothing else stirred. Then it started. A soft, yet unsettling voice whispering. The horrifying sound filled the area. It took control.” Zara

“Like mist the whimsical horses ran on, never second guessing themselves or thinking their wrong. The distant sound of the birds echoed around like a song, and the trees that stood so silently, grew long.

Soon enough I recognised, as rain fell like tears that I cried. But they continued, never ashamed, while I stood tall but very afraid.

They are free, proud and free, while I am begging them to help me. How I longed to stay and see, but I had to go back and face reality.” Anna

The Stadium

“The clouds danced with the wind, not daring to go near the abandoned stadium that sat carelessly on the top of the never-ending landscape. I cautiously approached the lonely arena that was once filled with crowds of excited people. Ever since last year, when a terrible tragedy had occurred all humanity rarely walked the earth in the now destroyed landscape. I ambled on, occasionally coming across small bits of the unforgotten past.” Luci

“A quiet chirp echoed through a narrow tunnel as glass fell like rain to the ground. Even the smallest gust of wind could shatter the glass surrounding the old stadium as the destruction weakened it. The sun laid on the horizon but it was almost impossible to see, thick lumps of white snow sat against the ring of the abandoned stadium and blocked off the glowing sunrise.” Ebony

Maleny SS RoboRave Team and robots

On the last long weekend, a team of Maleny SS students went to compete in the huge RoboRave robotics competition hosted at the USC Sports Stadium. The Team had a huge day competing against many students from across Queensland. It was truly amazing to see some of the robots in action on the day competing against other school teams. One team the Assassins made it into the finals. A huge effort.

Highlights of the day were seeing some amazing robots in action like ‘Spot’ from Boston Dynamics. This yellow dog like robot is amazing to see and truly showcases what is possible these days in the robotics field. Check out a few of the Boston Dynamics robots in action doing an amazing dance routine. Sadly, we didn’t get to see Spot dance like this on the day.

A Huge Honey Harvest!

Last week the Garden Club members enjoyed watching Dean from Brymac Native Bees remove honey from our garden hive. This hive was donated to the school by Barung Landcare two and half years ago. We all watched and were amazed at how much honey our little native bees had made for us.

Dean told us that the honey we harvested was worth $200 and we enjoyed tasting the citrus flavour. We then took Dean down to the rainforest to work out where we would put our new beehive which we were successful in obtaining in our latest grant application. The Garden Club members will be completing their bee hotels next week.

Grandparents Meet

On Monday 17th May, in Week 5, about 12 grandparents in our school and local community met together for scones and tea at The Sitting Room which is the big blue shed at the Baptist Church in Maleny. It was such a lovely morning of coming together to encourage and uplift one another. I want to thank Kyle and Adam Gallagher for allowing me to use such a beautiful facility to host this wonderful morning. I hope to have another get together in the next couple of weeks.
