Excellent School Review
In week 2 of this term we participated in our 4-yearly review. Reviewers spoke with all staff on the final day and verbally communicated that we have a wonderful school with some excellent teaching and learning systems embedded in place. All reviewers were glowing in their praise for the wonderfully positive and supportive culture that hit them from the minute they walked into our school and continued to be extremely evident in all facets of our school. We were very proud to hear this coming from our senior reviewer who has conducted over 100 school reviews. We will officially receive our written feedback in the next week or two, which we will analyse, share and use to set our strategic direction for the next 4 years. A huge thank you to all staff, students, parents, volunteers and community members that participated in discussions with our reviewers to support this process.
Cross Country
Thank you to all family members that were able to attend our cross country last week. Despite some weather challenges Mr Turner managed to ensure all classes completed their races on the day. Excellent work Shane. Participation from all students was excellent and the benefits of pre-race training from many students stood out on the day.
Next P&C Meeting Wednesday 12 May – We need You!
New parents are welcome and encouraged to attend our next general meeting on Wednesday May 12th at 6:30 pm. This meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre where parents can attend face to face or tune in from their own home using SKYPE online access.
We would love to see many more faces come along to our meetings to ensure that our P&C is truly representative of our whole school parent body.
Knitfest Donations Required
Wool and Felt in particular is required. Please see your child’s teacher who will advise what materials their class requires. All classes will complete a ‘There’s a Dragon in my Garden’ theme mural to be displayed on the front fence.
Knitfest is an exciting weekend Yarn & Fibre Arts Festival held July 3rd-4th 2021, celebrating fibre arts and crafts, embracing the whole community of Maleny. Organisers yarnbomb and decorate the main street of Maleny so the town becomes a centre of art, creativity, yarnbombing, workshops, music, trade stalls and craft markets. It is a magical festival for families to discover new skills, talents and creativity using fibre arts including knitting, crochet, basket weaving, spinning and weaving, felting and lots more.
The theme for this year is “There’s a Dragon in my Garden”.
Playing our part to build a national picture of child health
On the 20-21 May, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website:
http://www.aedc.gov.au/
If you have any questions please contact the school.
Mother’s Day Stall
Another fantastic coordination effort by Mandy McMahon and all of the volunteers who assisted each morning last week. A special thanks to all of our wonderful helpers who made it possible to ensure our stall ran smoothly each day. Our final profit figure this year was $1505.62. An amazing effort. Thank you to all our families that supported this P&C fundraiser.

Have a Magic Week in Maleny.

Australian Curriculum Review - Feedback
Many of you may have seen or heard in the media over the last week that there have been revisions made to the Australian Curriculum. The new draft curriculum is available for consultation. The curriculum review is to ensure that the curriculum continues to meet the needs of students now and into the future.
The Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is seeking feedback from the community. All feedback will be reviewed and considered in finalising revisions to the Australian Curriculum, which will be provided to education ministers for their consideration and approval.
If you are interested please go to the following website, the consultation period is from Thursday 29 April to Thursday 8 July.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be a Learner - “I can, I will, I’ll have a go!”
This fortnight our new BUZZ phrase is a Be a Learner rule - “I can, I will, I’ll have a go!” We love this Buzz phrase at Maleny State School as it really encourages all our students, big and small to have a try. It is amazing how much learning happens when we have a go.
This means:
- Have a positive attitude towards learning.
- Give our best effort when working.
- Always have a go to begin and finish our work in the classroom.
- Being an active learning inside and outside the classroom.
- Having an “I can” attitude and feeling proud of our work.

Year 4A & 4B
Promoting Our School Rainforest
This term the Yr 4s have been working on a Media Arts project where the students are working in small groups to create an advertisement to promote our school rainforest. We have discussed the importance of having a special place where we feel calm and connected. 4B found out the rules for sitting in a yarning circle and discussing topics.
We have been using our senses to write descriptive persuasive sentences about the rainforest.

Science
In Science we have been researching features of plants and animals. 4A completed labelled drawings of the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly
We are now beginning to look at life cycles and stages of development. The students are watching caterpillars move through their life cycle and it was exciting to see a chrysalis appear today.
We had lots of fun creating our own grassheads and planting new seedlings that will be transplanted to the garden.

This week the students have completed beautiful still life drawings for their Mum.

Breakdance
As part of our Art unit, parents (Kester and Kirsty from Heartspace) have been generously coming to school on Thursday afternoons to teach us some Breakdance moves. The assessment for this unit is to perform some taught dance moves and add some dance moves.

English News
At the moment students are finishing off their persuasive news article so that they are ready to create a multimodal article. Here are some DID YOU KNOW facts that we will use as evidence:
- 205 000 orangutans have died over the last 30 years
- Rainforests are being destroyed to plant Palm trees to make palm oil
- Palm oil is found in some of these products: chocolate, shampoo, noodles, toothpaste, soap and margarine.

Garden Beds Are Blooming
Our Preppies planted out their seedlings before the holidays and they made signs to tell us what they were growing. Everything is looking so lush. Our lemon tree is overloaded and the snow peas are climbing up the trellis.

The garden club members are keen to enter some of our produce in the Maleny show this year.
Our two garden sustainability leaders, Hazel and Lily have visited the Prep and Yr 1 classes to give instructions on what goes into each bin in their eating areas.
SOME EXCITING NEWS
Next week Dean from Brymac Native Bees will come and harvest the honey in our garden hive. This was donated by Barung Landcare two and a half years ago. The garden club kids will get to see inside the hive and taste our own honey. We are hoping to enter our native bee honey in the Maleny Show this year.
Promoting Our Special School Rainforest
We have just been advised that our grant application with Woolworths Landcare was successful. We have been allocated $1,580 to add a new nature beehive in our school rainforest. We will also be planting some bush tucker and special vines to create a habitat for two endangered species. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and The Pink Underwing Moth. The students will also be designing signs for the rainforest. We are all very excited!!
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
