Maleny State School Annual Improvement Focus 2021
- English
Welcome Back
It is great to see such a buzz and a high level of energy around the school to start the Term. With three long weekends this term teachers are valuing every day they have with their students. Our school focus this year is English so I take this opportunity to remind parents of the importance of reading to your children and listening to them read on every opportunity you can find, especially in a real-life context. Class newsletters coming home will outline the Key Learning Area tasks your children will be participating in this Term. I encourage you to look closely at the English (especially writing) tasks students will be assessed on and discuss with your child what their English learning goal is. Students will receive their Semester One report card at the end of this term with parent teacher interviews occurring early in Term 3. Parents are always welcome to meet with teachers throughout the term at their request.
ANZAC Day Service
Thank you to all parents that attended our moving school ANZAC Service last Friday. I would like to especially thank George Thomas from the RSL for addressing students and reflecting on the importance of ANZAC Day. I was extremely proud of our student leaders that spoke beautifully and the respectful behaviour and manner of all students in attendance. A special thank you must be given to Deputy Principal Paula Heiniger who coordinated our ANZAC Ceremony and prepared students this year.
School Review 2021
This week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we welcome Sandra Perrett internal school reviewer from the Education Improvement Branch (EIB), Bruce Torrens peer reviewer, Pam Hall external reviewer and Zowie D’Amico-Thompson - Research Team EIB who will conduct our 4 yearly review. The review plays an important part in how the Education Department supports school improvement. The review will provide our school with independent feedback, tailored to our context and needs. We will use the review findings to work with our school community and assistant regional director to develop clear actions to move our school forward.
Reviewers will look closely at our school’s performance data and speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school. Unlike many other review systems, schools are not ranked or given a performance rating. Instead, the school is given a comprehensive report for consideration. The report details key findings and recommended improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. This report will be shared with staff and the school community to help shape the school’s strategic direction.
Parent and community participation feedback from parents and the community is an important part of school reviews, with everyone encouraged to have their say.
Karen Sherwell Retiring
Congratulations Karen on an amazing 30 years of service to our community as a Crossing Supervisor. This Wednesday on assembly we will officially farewell Karen and thank her for keeping our children and community safe for such a long time. Parents are welcome to attend and express their gratitude in person.
Students, staff and parents will certainly miss Karen’s happy smile and warm greetings each day on the crossing and around our school. We wish you all the best in Retirement Karen and look forward to catching up in the future.
COVID Check In Qld App in use at Maleny State School
We are endeavouring to make it easier for you to help keep us all COVID safe at our school for major school events. We are using the COVID Check In App because it is safe, secure and convenient.
Download the Check In Qld app today
http://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/check-in-qld
You will need to use the Check in Qld app for the following types of events if you are planning on staying or may have other family members also attending:
Sports Days |
Meetings and Events |
School Concerts |
School Fetes |
Working Bees |
P&C Meetings |
Assemblies |
Colour Fun Run |
Cross Country |
The school will post the Check in Queensland posters clearly in and around these events for quick and easy check-in processes. You are not expected to Sign-in at the school office for these events.
Volunteers do not need to use the Check in Qld app when performing normal volunteer activities (tuckshop roster, class reading, mentor activities etc.). Instead, as per normal procedures, all volunteers are to enter via the school office and use the Sign-in iPad so your details are available in the event of an emergency at school.
Parents or guardians are not required to use the app when dropping off or picking up students from school each day.
Please remember to always be COVID safe and socially distance when at school.
Playing our part to build a national picture of child health
On the 20 -21 May, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fifth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it isn’t an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole and that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website:
http://www.aedc.gov.au/
If you have any questions, you can contact principal John Byrne.

Naplan 2021
The 2021 NAPLAN Online test window is from 11–21 May, see NAPLAN Online test timetable for detailed test information. Naplan testing will be undertaken by our year 3 & year 5 students during this time.
As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
Federal, state and territory education ministers agreed to gradually transition NAPLAN online by 2022. NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, providing better assessment and more precise results.
An information package was sent home with all year 3 and 5 students prior to the practice tests that were undertaken in week 9 and 10 of term 1. For more information please read the NAPLAN Online information brochure for parents and carers (PDF 182 kb) .
The below timetable indicates when the Naplan Tests will be scheduled during week 4 & 5 of this term. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak with your child’s class teacher or myself.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Respectful - “Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn”
Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed a lovely Easter holiday break.
Our new Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is a Be Respectful rule, with the BUZZ phrase “Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn”.
This means we encourage students to think about:
- Use whole body listening.
- Listen without interrupting.
- Raise your hand if you have a question, or don’t understand.
- Wait until a person has finished talking before you start.
To help our students be learners we can:
- Demonstrate / discuss with them what full body listening looks like.
- Play games with them that encourage listening (e.g. eye spy, guess the mystery sound).
- Use descriptive and encouraging statements to highlight your expectations.
From the PBL Team.

Zero the Hero – 50 days of Prep
Who can believe this week we celebrated 50 days of Prep? Each day the Preps count how many days they have attended Prep since their very first day. We add a paddle pop stick to our one’s jar and when we reach 10 we make a bundle and add it to our 10’s bucket. We are learning to count in 10’s. This week we reached 5 bundles of 10 and our friend Zero the Hero arrived to celebrate 50 days at Prep. We all had lots of fun making our crowns. The Preps felt extremely proud leaving at the end of the day wearing their 50 days of Prep crowns.

Year 2A & 2B
We would like to welcome everyone back to term 2. The children have settled back into the school routine, and we are working towards our new curriculum tasks. We would like to remind you all our assessments will begin around week five on, so attendance is important now. Please notify the office if your child is away for any reason.
We will be sending some notes home soon about this term's home projects needed for assessments. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions or concerns during the term.
Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain (2A) & Libby Ferguson (2B)
3A and 3B extend a warm welcome back to students, parents and carers. Here’s to a positive and productive Term 2.
What a difference a year makes when looking back to the same time last year. Normal really is great! Normal routines, normal play times, normal expectations. We look forward to the challenges ahead and the rewards that come with improved efforts. Our students are eagerly awaiting their first NAPLAN challenge and aiming for a personal best.
Cross country is being held for P-6 on 5th May so our P.E. lessons will focus on track and field events. We are welcoming donations for the Mother’s Day Stall. These can be placed in a box in the classroom. This is fast becoming a very busy term but after the challenges faced last year we are confident that we will sail through.
