Colour Fun Run
What a fantastic event our Colour Fun Run was last week, enhanced greatly by being able to have over 100 parents in attendance. Students and staff enjoyed a fun afternoon where laughter was prevalent and smiles were unavoidable. I was extremely proud of our staff who in less than a days’ notice of new Covid regulations were flexible enough to reorganise preparations so this event could allow parents to attend. My day was certainly brightened up after being colour bombed by 12 of our highest fundraising students. A huge thank you to all students that participated in this event and the pre-event fundraising activities that raised over $26,000 in total resulting in a profit for the school of $14,658.74 after admin and prize costs are subtracted. A huge thank you to Shane Turner for his organisation and Kylie McAuliffe (coordinator), Kathy Fernance and Zoltan Bourne from our P&C who organised prizes and distributed these to students on Friday. Visit our School Facebook page to see some great action shots snapped by Mr Greig.

Helpful things to do to help your child become a better speller
Parents can assist us, in helping their children achieve success in spelling, reading, and writing. Here are some helpful tips that will help set your child on the path to word study success!
- When reading to your child, point out patterns that occur across words “Look! The letters ‘ss’ at the end of ‘mess’ and ‘dress’ make one sound—/ s / .” Encourage your child to look for other words with the same pattern.
- When your child asks you how to spell a word, don’t automatically spell it for them. Ask them to think about phonemes (sounds) in the word, the letter patterns of other words that are similar, and the meaning of the word.
- When your child brings home their weekly spelling list, ask him to look for patterns across words and group words together according to the same pattern; we don’t want him to think that words can only be memorized.
- If your child is stuck on how to spell a word, start by asking them to think about each phoneme they hear in the word and putting at least one letter for each phoneme; make sure they write the letters at the exact same time they say the corresponding phoneme.
- Point out that words that are related by meaning often use the same base or root. “Hey! ‘Magician’ and ‘magic’ have similar meanings. I see ‘magic’ in ‘magician’ even though I don’t hear it in there.”
- When your child needs to spell a long word, encourage them to think of smaller chunks within the word that have meaning. “’Comfortable’. Well, I know how to spell ‘comfort’ and I know that ‘able’ is often spelled as ‘a‐b‐l‐e’. Let’s try that.”
- When you are helping your child learn to spell a word, associate with a word he already knows how to spell. “How do you spell ‘toast’? Well, it rhymes with or sounds a lot like ‘boast’. Use ‘boast’ to help you spell ‘toast’.”
- When spelling a word, encourage your child to say the individual phonemes – not the letter names – as they write the corresponding letters; we say phonemes and we write letters.
- Don’t dismiss spelling as something that can always be corrected by spellcheckers. That’s simply not the case!

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be Responsible - “PLAY FAIR”
This fortnight's new 4B rule is Be Responsible with the Buzz Phrase “Play Fair”.
This means we encourage all students to:
- play fairly
- include all in their games
- share and take turns, giving everyone a go
- help those that are still learning the rules and skills
- be a good loser and a good winner
- accept if others think they’re out or have made an error
- be cooperative and not bossy
- be a team player and show good sportsmanship
- use positive talk to themselves, their peers and adults
- to solve problems with their head not their hands – hands & feet to myself, think first, move away, breathe, report
- let go of what they can’t control
- use calming strategies when feeling upset
- use the high 5 to help solve problems
- move away and re-set

Year 4A, & 4B
What a busy term for the year 4s. In week 4 we had a wonderful time on the year 4 camp at Currimundi. It was most impressive that every child in year four was able to attend this fantastic camp. Body boarding, rock climbing, archery, catapults and the giant swing were among our favourite activities.
More recently, we have been working on assessment tasks for different subjects. In English our assessment task involved the children identifying and describing persuasive techniques used in cereal packaging. They are currently designing their own cereal box and incorporating persuasive techniques to appeal to their intended audience. In Maths the children completed some work on decimal numbers and money. In Science the children have enjoyed designing and investigating their own force game as part of their science assessment for this term.

Student Leaders for 2021
Recently Year 5 students have been involved in the school’s Leadership process. This has involved students interested in leadership roles in 2021 collecting evidence of service in many areas, e.g. volunteering and representing, which has been incredibly difficult this year. These were recorded in their “Passport to Leadership” booklets and verified by the relevant supervising adults. Following this, students submitted a form detailing the positions they were nominating for (School/Vice, Music, Sustainability and House Captains). Those vying for School Captaincy roles were interviewed and then the candidates presented speeches to the teaching staff and Year 4 and 5 students who voted for the people they believed were the best people to represent them. These votes have been counted and the new School Captains will be officially presented at the Year 6 Graduation ceremony in Week 10.
Last week students running for Music, Sustainability and House Captains spoke to the Year 4 and 5 classes. The candidates who were successful in being voted into these roles will be announced soon.
Congratulations to all students who nominated for any of these roles and who were involved in this process. Many students challenged themselves and stepped outside of their own personal comfort zones. The Year 5 teachers are incredibly proud of the efforts made, and by the way that students have conducted themselves throughout the whole process.
Year 5 Leadership Camp
In Week 9 the Year 5 students will be attending the Leadership Camp at Mapleton (QCC). The focus of this camp is to develop skills as the future 2021 school leaders. Students will undertake many activities which will see them work together as teams where they will show respect, care, compassion, as well as encourage and support each other. Over the years we have found that this experience really brings the cohort together forming strong bonds for their final year at primary school. The camp uses the hand symbol for students to reflect on their own values- especially their personal conduct, relationships and interaction with society and the environment. Students will participate in activities like Canoeing, the Rock Wall climb, Giant Swing and Archery where they will challenge themselves to a point where they feel that they have pushed their own personal boundaries.

LOTE Japanese
Sing songs
Singing and writing the lyrics of songs are great ways of learning how to speak, write and read a language. Students in year 5 have learned the song of ‘Oni no pantsu’, the pants worn by Oni, the ogre or troll, popular in Japanese literature, art and theatre. Oni is also the ‘it’ of a group game. Students have produced a colourful poster with the lyrics and the illustration of a ‘Oni’.
Meanwhile, students in year 6 have learned the theme song of the anime ‘Totoro’ and produce a poster with its lyrics. The song is about exploring the nature and the amazing feeling that it brings. Hopefully these students in year 6, will take away with them all the positiveness and the joy of exploring the nature as well as the cultural diversity, as they graduate primary school and move on towards the teenage and high school years in a very near future.

Enrichment Centre
Our school’s vision is for Connected Learners and Creative Leaders and one of Maleny’s past students Rory O’Chee is an exceptional example of our vision. Rory attended Maleny State School from 2008 to 2011 and participated in particular in the Enrichment Centre’s social clubs which used photography as a platform for developing valuable life-long skills. I would like to celebrate with our school’s community his amazing talent.
