Principal’s Report

NADIOC Week

The 2020 NAIDOC theme: ‘Always Was. Always will Be.’ seeks to get teachers, students and community to explore and learn about, and appreciate the wealth and breadth of Indigenous Nations, languages and knowledge of this continent.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for everyone, of every age and from everywhere, to celebrate

the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students at Maleny State School this week will participate in lessons that explore some of the ways of the Jinibara people, the traditional owners of our area.

Some facts about the JINIBARA NATION

The Jinibara people are the MOUNTAIN PEOPLE.

Jini = lawyer vine Bara = people

They lived in the mountains and valleys where the lawyer vine grows.

Area:

West of Old Gympie Rd and Blackall Ranges, including Maleny.

Neighbours:

Gubbi Gubbi Nation in the coastal plains and Mary River Valley areas, known to the Jinibara as the ‘Saltwater people’.

Sub groups:

  1. Dungidau (Kilcoy, Villeneuve and Mt Archer)
  2. Dala (Woodford and Mt Mee area)
  3. Nalbo (Blackall Range and much of Glasshouse Mountains)

Language:

  • Closely related to the neighbouring nation Gubbi Gubbi’s language
  • Hello = “Ngara” (nah-ra)
  • Welcome = “Wunya” (wun-ya)

Food

A most prized food was the bunya nut which flourished in the region.

The ripeness of bunya nuts was signalled by the onset of bark loss in stands of sugar and white gums. Messages were sent to relatives and nearby tribes to meet up and feast on the harvested nuts at Barun, a bush clearing set in the mountains as Baroon Pocket, a site described as a paradise in the wilderness by a German missionary who saw it, and one now flooded out by the Baroon Pocket Dam.

Adult Jobs / Roles:

Men

Women

Fisherman

Singing and settling babies

Hunter

Weavers

Possum cloak makers

Maker of utensils & weapons

Gathering foods

Events:

  • Festivals (The Bunya Festival was held in Barun, now called Baroon Pocket)
  • Ceremonies
  • Sporting / wrestling games

Trading:

  • The Jinibara people were famous for their “gugunde”, the black possum fur cloaks they produced.

Colour Fun Run

Our Colour Fun Run will take place on Wednesday 18 November (Week 7). Unfortunately it will be a student only event. Students will require an old white T-shirt and a change of clothes if travelling home by bus.

Successful Year 4 Camp

Our Year 4’s enjoyed a magnificent 3 days at Currimundi Camp, participating in numerous activities including: body boarding, Giant Swing, rock climbing, archery, Alpine Team Rescue, making catapults, mini Olympics and circus skills. Student behaviour, participation and teamwork was excellent. It was personally very satisfying to spend so much time with students and staff in such an engaging environment, watching children shine and develop new skills. Amazingly this camp had a 100% participation rate from students. A big thank you to all of our wonderful staff that worked so hard before, during and after to make this camp happen. Awesome Year 4, so proud!

Book Week

Our very own Gregosaurus.

Last Friday was an incredibly exciting day at Maleny State School with students and teachers bringing to life many of our favourite book characters.

Have a look on our Facebook page to see some of the wonderful costumes on display.

The Facebook post link is:

After searching all day, Captain Hook finally found Peter Pan in Prep. A furious battle broke out in front of the office which saw Captain Hook well and truly defeated and even having a pot of Wombat Stew thrown on him for good measure. Defeated, but not beaten, Captain Hook turned his eye to a very cute and tasty baby Gruffalo.

Thank you Mr Grieg for organising, staff and students for participating and to all of our creative mums and dads for making costumes and bringing so much joy to everyone’s week.

GEMS RoboClub compete at Maleny High School Sumo Competition

Last week our 15 student strong RoboClub team headed up the hill to compete at the 2020 Sumo Lego Robotics Competition. Our club was invited by Maleny State High Technologies Teacher, Mr Scott Day, to attend the first of these events. Our RoboClub entered 5 teams against the 10 teams from the high school.

The day was organised as a fun day to help test out our Sumo Lego robot designs and coding strategies. Whilst the kids were initially nervous to compete against high school teams, after only a few rounds in of the 15 round preliminary battles, many were faring much better than they expected. At one stage all 5 of our primary school teams were in the top 10.

The end of the preliminary rounds saw two of our teams make it into the 8 team finals. Both ‘War Machine’ (Eli and Jasper) and ‘Winnie the Pooh’ (William and Ollie) teams did exceptionally well to get into the finals against some very challenging opponents. Special mention goes to team ‘Winnie the Pooh’ who were placed top of the leader board after the preliminary rounds. A fantastic job! Sadly, ‘War Machine’ was knocked out in the quarter finals. ‘Winnie the Pooh’ made it into the semi-finals but was beaten by the eventual grand final champions.

The students had a great day and competition. It was an excellent opportunity to test out their skills against other teams as well as check out how the high school robotics program operates. In 2021 our GEMS RoboClub will be offered again and we hope to have another shot at the title against Maleny State High School!

Early Finish to 2020 School Year

Leaving our school or have a 2021 Prep student enrolling

Our staffing formula is based on student day 8, 2021 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2021 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2021 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2021. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2021 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

Transition to Prep Days

We will be holding a series of Transition to Prep days to ease the children’s transition from home, kindy and day-care to Prep. Children are invited to attend any or all of these days with an adult. These transition mornings will provide you with an opportunity to visit the Prep classrooms and playground and meet the friendly staff. Please bring a hat. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days.

These days will be held on:

  • Wednesday 11 Nov - 9.00am – 10.00am
  • Wednesday 18 Nov - 9.00am – 10.00am

Remembrance Day - 11 November 2020

Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year and although this year has been a challenge, we will still be marking our respects and paying tribute to the brave men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our freedoms, through our Virtual Assembly presentation that will be made available to each classroom to view. Each class will also lay a tribute at the foot of our ‘lone pine’. Our lone pine seedling originates from one of the pine cones brought back to Australia from the battle site of Lone Pine, where the original ‘lone pine’ stood.

Enrichment Centre

Social Club

Social Club is an alternate education program that focusses on social emotional needs of students, in particular students with disabilities. The program uses Science, cooking, art, sport and ICT as mediums to develop social, emotional and communication skills.

The program has three main areas of focus:

  • When faced with a social problem, there are socially acceptable ways to deal with the situation.
  • In order to communicate effectively, appropriate non-verbal and verbal skills need to be implemented.
  • Teamwork is essential when working in groups.

Through the engaging activities the students explore:

  • How they can develop friendship and positive relations with one another
  • What steps can they take to improve their self-image
  • What are emotions and how can they identify them
  • What are feelings and what are several ways that they can cope with them.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)

Prep A & Prep B

Daily Writing

The Preps have listened to and innovated on familiar imaginative stories to create a new story for a favourite character. We enjoyed reading many stories from the “The Lighthouse Keeper” series. The characters Mr and Mrs Grinling and their cat had many new adventures during the Preps daily writing. This week we have listened to fractured fairy tales to inspire our budding writers to complete their story planner with a new event and ending to the story. Have a look at some examples of our great writing.

Move it Move it

The Preps have continued learning all about movement. They have been experimenting with ramps as they explore the concept of sliding and rolling. They have also been constructing some amazing things with parts that move.

Day For Daniel

Thank you for supporting this day by wearing red and making a gold coin donation to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The Preps watched Australia’s Biggest Safety Lesson and enjoyed a walk around the oval together.

Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)

Year 2A & 2B

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the term!

Students are still enjoying their swimming lesson each week. Well done to those participating, and it is something to look forward to during the warmer days we have had.

At this point of the Term we are working hard on completing assessment in preparation for report cards. It is, therefore, extremely important that students are attending school each day.

Students have been thoroughly enjoying the English unit, writing an event for a familiar story “Spirit of Hope”. They are also extending their knowledge on conservation of the Earth’s resources in Science, sharing their prior knowledge of water conservation around the home and learning about the importance of conserving soil and resources found under the ground. If you are an avid gardener, this is the time to get the kids out to help you prepare the soil with compost, mulch and worms to help reinforce what we have been learning.

The excitement around the school fun run is building. It has been great to see so much enthusiasm around the fundraising. The day will be a huge amount of fun and something to look forward to as we near the end of the school year.

Please remember students need a hat each day.

Homework is due on Fridays, as are Library books for borrowing during their time at the Innovation Centre with Mr Greig.

Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain (2A) & Libby Ferguson (2B)

Year 3A & 3B

Halfway through our very last term for 2020! Where is the time going?

Both classes are working hard to complete assessment tasks this week.

The children have been enjoying their swimming lessons and have learnt valued skills for safety in and around the water. The swimming lessons are going well now that the weather has warmed up!

Presenting Our Poetry

The Year 3’s have been busy writing their own poem using their senses after listening to the poem, Desert Community. Over the next week, students will be presenting their adaption to this poem to their peers in an oral presentation. It has been amazing to see the students being so descriptive and expressing emotions about a location of their choice.

Just a friendly reminder to families that attendance every day is very important as we are carrying out assessment. Also, all students need to have a hat. Please make sure your child has a hat and it is labelled.
