Principal’s Report

Maleny State School Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) & Student Code of Conduct

We are currently reviewing our behaviour / rewards systems and writing our Student Code of Conduct Policy (which will replace our current Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students, Statement of Expectations and Code of School Behaviour). As a school we value your opinions and would like your feedback and ideas to assist us in our decision making.

The 2020 behaviour survey will be emailed to all families this week and should take about 5-10 minutes to complete. We hope that as many families as possible can complete this survey, which closes on Friday 30 October at 5:00pm. A draft of our Code of Conduct is on our website for you to view. We are seeking input from staff, students, parents, families and the wider community before it is endorsed by our P&C before the end of the year.

The Student Code of Conduct clearly sets out expectations about staff responsibilities to support students to understand and meet discipline expectations of the school, and guidance on the application, where required, of disciplinary consequences. This document will be available on each school's website and provided to newly enrolled students and their parents.

Year 6 Camp

Last week I had the privilege of going on camp to Noosa North Shore with our Year 6 students. This was a wonderful experience for children and staff alike. In a year where there have been many cancelations it was great to see 98% of students attend this camp. I extend my gratitude to our wonderful teachers that made this opportunity possible for students. It was a proud moment as Principal to hear very experienced camp instructors congratulate our students and comment they were the best group of students they have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Student behaviour and participation was excellent.

World Teachers’ Day

This Friday is World Teachers’ Day please join with me in acknowledging the incredibly important work our teachers do, each and every day of the week. Our teachers do an amazing job in supporting all of our students and truly deserve recognition for their professional skills and the supportive culture that they create for our students to thrive in.

Day for Daniel – Friday 30 October 2020

Recognise, React and Report - these are the key components that we teach our children to keep them safe. On Friday, we will join in Australia’s Biggest Safety Lesson along with many other schools right across the nation. Students are asked to wear red clothing and donate a gold coin, which will be passed on to the Daniel Morecombe Foundation. As part of our Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL) we have had a specific focus for two weeks around personal safety. We teach students the components around what Recognise, Report and React mean, and how they can enact strategies in real life situations to keep themselves safe. Please take time to reinforce personal safety with your children at home and ensure that they understand what Recognise, Report and React mean and can name 5 safe adults that they would be able to turn to and seek support should they need.

This Fortnights Rule

Be Safe

BUZZ Phrase

RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT

What does RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT mean?

RECOGNISE encourages students to be aware of their surroundings and to recognise body clues in situations where they don’t feel safe.

REACT helps students to consider choices that may keep them safe or help make them safe again as quickly as possible.

REPORT encourages students to report unsafe incidents to an adult.

Please ensure all children can list 5 trusted Adults and who they would talk to at school and home that would help and support them.

Colour Fun Run

Thank you to all families that participated in the fundraising component of our Colour Fun Run. We were amazed at your fundraising efforts in such a difficult year. This event has raised a gross total of $25,128.47 (cost of prizes and colour run organisation, powder etc. yet to be deducted). Prizes are expected to arrive in the next 3 weeks and will then be distributed to students. Our actual Colour Fun Run will take place on Wednesday 18 November (Week 7), unfortunately it will be a student only event. Students will require an old white T-shirt and a change of clothes if travelling home by bus. A big thank you to Kylie McAuliffe, our coordinator of this event, and all families that have participated.

Leaving our school or have a 2021 Prep student enrolling

Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2021 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2021 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

Prep Information Session – Save the Date

A Prep Information Session will be held on Wednesday 4 November at 5:30pm at our school in our Innovation Centre. Please phone 54998333 to RSVP by Friday 30 October.

Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2021 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2021. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2021 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

Transition to Prep Days

We will be holding a series of Transition to Prep days to ease the children’s transition from home, kindy and day-care to Prep. Children are invited to attend any or all of these days with an adult. These transition mornings will provide you with an opportunity to visit the Prep classrooms and playground and meet the friendly staff. Please bring a hat. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days.

These days will be held on:

  • Wednesday 11 Nov - 9.00am – 10.00am

Thank Your Teacher! – World Teachers’ Day Friday, 30 October

Celebrated in more than 100 countries world-wide, World Teachers' Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1994 to recognise the role of teachers in society. This year UNESCO's theme for World Teachers' Day is, ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future’.

World Teachers' Day is held internationally on 5 October. As the day usually falls during Australian school holidays, Queensland is celebrating this year on Friday 30 October 2020.

World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank your child’s teacher and for your children to thank their teacher for the important role they play - inside our classrooms and out in the community.

Our amazing Maleny State School teachers go above and beyond for our students each and every day.

A simple gesture of ‘saying thanks’ in a handwritten note or card would brighten up a teacher’s day and be something that they can cherish forever.

This Fortnights Rule - Be Safe

BUZZ Phrase RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT

That means:

  • Our bodies can tell us CLUES when we don’t feel safe.
  • I can run away from danger or scream out loudly.
  • I can get help from an adult, the school Principal, a teacher, my parents and grandparents. I can ring 000 to get the police.

All children are encouraged to list 5 trusted Adults.

Year 4A & 4B

Everyone Is Excited about Camp - only a few sleeps to go!!!!

Over the last two weeks the Year 4’s have been focusing on co-operative games to prepare for team activities for camp next week. Tolerance and patience are lifelong skills to master to make us happier and supportive people. The facilities at camp are fantastic so the children should have a ball!!

In English we have just completed a written response to the novel Rowan of Rin. The children chose a chapter to investigate language features and to explain how a pivotal event changed Rowan in a positive way. We are now focusing on our Advertising Unit and our learning goal is to use language to express and explain an opinion.

The Year 4’s have completed one section of our vertical garden and the plants are blooming.

This week we are evaluating our design and suggesting what we would change to make the vertical garden more successful.

In Maths we have been working on decimals and fractions, collecting and representing data and money transactions. 4B have been completing an artwork of a new $50 note and incorporating a picture of Adam Goodes and illustrating his story as an inspiring Indigenous Sportsman, Former Australian of the Year and Activist.

The artwork is impressive and the kids are keen to send Adam a copy of our work. 4A have been completing artwork that requires them to create a picture from different shapes and to use their imagination. Each piece is different, so the students are showing their unique flare.

Digital Technology

Last term Year 5 students looked at various components of computers and how they can be networked. This term students will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of coding when they collaboratively create a maze game looking at teaching young children about “Being Healthy” or “Being Prepared for Natural Disasters.”

Here are some groups working on their plans and games.

Green Screen Drama

In Semester 1 part of our HASS studies involved us looking at being prepared for Disasters. This has helped us to create our Dramas using Green Screen Technology. Small groups planned, rehearsed and are currently recording their performances. Some students have created news reports where people have been trapped or injured during disasters like floods, bushfires and droughts.

Here are some snapshots of our Green Screen performances and recordings.

Exciting things coming up...

  • Leadership interviews, speeches and voting for School, House, Music and Sustainability Captains
  • Year 5 Camp in Week 9 (Wed 2 Dec- Fri 4 Dec 2020). Please remember to return notes and pay by the due dates.

Winners of the Kendama Championship

Kendama is a traditional wooden toy in Japan. Playing with it creates a full body, low impact exercise. The legs learn to move up and down in flow with the rise and fall of the wooden ball. Using Kendama improves hand eye coordination, gross motor skills and fine motor skills.

Congratulations to the winners of the Maleny State School 2020 Kendama Championship. Each landing on the ken (spike) was worth 10 points and each landing on the cups (sara) was worth 5 points, within 3 minutes.

Teaching Calming Strategies

It is important for children to take time to relax for their well-being and to prepare their minds and bodies for learning. The Enrichment Centre teaches and employs a number of calming strategies for students.

We teach the Zones of Regulation, a framework which uses four colours children can use to describe their emotional state. The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.

Meditation apps such as Smiling Mind are used to help students to focus on their breath and body sensations to promote relaxation. Sensory toys can be provided to calm students and promote concentration. An uncluttered learning environment is also important as overstimulation can occur, distracting and even upsetting some children.

Lessons and strategies are tools for a child’s toolbox that they can draw upon when needed.

Book Week Celebrations in Week 5 (2 - 6 November)

The 2020 Book Week was changed this year. Due to camps being shifted we have decided to hold our own Book Week celebrations in Week 5 of Term 4. We have a 'Draw with an Illustrator' competition planned for the week. This can be done with your family at home or during lunch breaks in the Innovation Centre during week 5.

Here are 3 examples of great drawing tutorial videos by Illustrator Jim Field (from the Oi Frog, Oi Dog, Oi Cat and Oi Duck-billed Platypus books) that you can follow along with to create a book character.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyCe11JJmk8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA9cYstl4FE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBQkLVSc41E

Lastly here is an entire play list of nearly 60 book characters by Rob Biddulph. He is an author/ illustrator of a host of books with some amazing looking characters. The “#DrawWithRob is a series of draw-along videos that you can watch with your kids and, hopefully, make some nice pictures together.” Check out his playlist below and try out one of these tutorials. Don’t forget to bring in one of your drawings to enter the competition. Make sure to add your name and class on the drawing.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYbUsFfT50EI-5luLJ7mBzGIlummnjwby

The week culminates in a free dress day on Friday 6 November, when you can dress up as your favourite 'curious creatures' or 'wild minds' book characters. Otherwise any book character will do. The Student Council will be collecting a gold coin donation on the day.

The highlight of the week is thanks to the wonderful Dymock's Children's Charities at the link below and their amazing Library Regeneration Program. Thanks to this program our school has hundreds of brand-new books in our collection, to the value of $4,000! The objective of this program is to improve the resourcing of school libraries by providing books for the use of all students within the school.

https://www.dymockschildrenscharities.org.au/

These books have all now arrived and have been prepped for release into our Library. They will be released for borrowing officially in Week 5. There are a number of students eagerly awaiting to get their hands on these new books.

Again, a huge thank you to Dymocks Children’s Charities for such a wonderful gift this year.

Check out the short video below about the Book Week and see some of the books we received.

War on Waste

A New Season – Adding More Seedlings!

We had an amazing crop of snow peas this year and the Garden Club members have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the snow peas climb high up the trestle and producing an abundant crop. It has been fantastic to see some of our garden beds blooming after our compost has been added. We now have a garden bed overflowing with tomato plants.

Kale is proving to be a highlight and we have been practicing making the perfect kale chips which the children want to sell on the days Tuckshop isn’t on, to raise more money for new seedlings. Garden beds have been designated now for growing 3 varieties of kale.

Jobs for this week were pulling out the old plants and weeding with some children adding new seedlings (tomatoes, cauliflower, chives and corn).

The Year 5 students have been training some of our Year 4’s to take over the recycling and composting duties for next year.

Thanks to Serena for coming in to help the Year 4 students complete their vertical garden, the flowers are blooming.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
