Principal’s Report
P&C Major Fundraiser - Colour Fun Run
So far this year our P&C has been unable to hold any fundraising events, having to cancel our major school fundraiser the Country Fair along with our Golf Day, Mother’s Day Stall, Discos etc. As a result it has been decided that our major fundraising event for this year will be our Colour Fun Run, we are also looking to run a Father’s Day Stall and an end of year raffle. We understand that this year is a difficult year financially for many families and hope that with utilizing the benefits of online fundraising this will reduce the impact on families allowing greater participation.
We will be holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day on Wednesday 18th November 2020. We are holding the event so that we can raise much needed money for Growing our School during the challenges and limited fundraising opportunities imposed by Covid 19. The fundraising will commence on Monday 3rd August until Friday 18th September 2020. Flyers will come home with students containing the below information this week.
About the Day
The Crazy Colour Day is all about Fun! It will be a huge colourful mess and is undoubtedly one of the most exciting days on our school’s calendar, with everyone’s participation the aim, so please make sure you attend the day and cheer the other kids on!
How Does My Child Fundraise?
Firstly, go to the link below and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page.
https://www.schoolfunrun.com.au/
Students who raise just $10 will be able to choose a prize! The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The great thing about online fundraising is that you can share the link to your child’s profile with friends and family via email, SMS and Social media.
Online Fundraising
The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students in the past have raised an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at the link below and share your online fundraising link.
https://www.schoolfunrun.com.au/
Getting Involved
Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the Crazy Colour Day. If you would like to volunteer on the day, please contact me on the details below. I can’t wait to see you at our event!
Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE
Please contact your school’s coordinator Kylie M if this isn’t possible.
Prizes MUST be ordered between 18th September 2020 and 9th October 2020. Simply visit the link below to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist!

P&C Meeting Wednesday New faces Welcome
Please join us on Wednesday the 12 August at 6:30pm at our next Skype P&C meeting. An invitation will be emailed to all parents to enable you to join the meeting from the comfort of your home.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Great to see so many parents taking advantage of our parent teacher interviews last week. I am keen to hear any feedback from parents about this years interview process that were conducted by phone and Skype. Please email or come along to our P&C meeting to voice your ideas and opinions. These meetings allow parents a more personal communication and information exchange around your children. If you missed this opportunity please don’t hesitate to call and make an appointment with your child’s teacher.
Book Donation
The Friends of Mary Cairncross recently donated their beautiful book “The Magic of Mary Cairncross” to our school as part of a grant funded by the Sunshine Coast Council. This book celebrates the beauty and significance of the Reserve with a fantastic collection of art, nature, science and storytelling told in an easy to understand way. There are over 100 original artworks of watercolours, acrylics, oils and carvings, all done by local artists. The book is available in the library and is well worth a look. We are very grateful for this donation to our school.
Have a Great Week. John

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. These details include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
Enrichment Centre Notes
At the Enrichment Centre we organise age based social groups for girls. These intensive sessions have provided an opportunity to focus on friendships skills and emotional regulation. We also include elements of the ‘Exploring Feelings’ program by Dr Tony Atwood. This program asks the girls to learn about themselves and each other through topics such as Strengths and Talents, Being Happy and Feeling Relaxed. Art and craft activities are also used as tools for self-expression and relaxation.

SWPBL (School Wide Positive Behaviour Learning)
Be a Learner – “Bounce Back”
This Fortnights Rule is a Be a Learner rule, with the BUZZ Phrase “Bounce Back”
A major part of bouncing back is building resilience. Resilience is the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress. We need to help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.
- Take some time out to Cool down
- Use positive talk, I will be ok, I am ok , I will bounce back
- Talk to someone (friend, teacher)
- I can identify and manage my emotions
- I am a problem solver – talk, negotiate, scissors/paper/rock, seek teacher help
- I use my support network to bounce back
- I can recognise feelings in myself and others and I am compassionate
- I can label and track the physical signs of different emotions within myself
- I will use a range of self-management strategies to act in an appropriate way
The PBL team.

100 days of Prep Learning
Great excitement for the Prep classes as they reached their 100 days of Prep. Zero the Hero popped in for his final visit and brought with him some crowns for us to make. These went well with the superhero capes we had already made and decorated with a glitter 100. We have learnt a lot about numbers as we counted each day of Prep with a paddle pop stick. Every time we reached a number with a zero, we bundled our sticks into groups of ten. This helped us to count in tens. Finally, our collection reached 100. We decorated our classrooms and each drew a delightful portrait of what we might look like at 100. Our writing for the day was “If I was 100 ….” At the 100 days of Prep Celebration, both classes enjoyed playing musical chairs, singing and dancing to number songs and whacking the piñata. What a surprise when gold coins came tumbling out. We counted the coins by placing each one on a 10 frame and amazingly, there were 100.

100 Day Party
Students had a wonderful celebration of 100 days at school. There was much revelry amongst the students and teachers. Copious amounts of yummy food were counted and then eaten. The celebration wasn’t complete without painting, games, party crowns and balloons with just a sprinkle of Fun Friday Free Time thrown in.
Thank you to all parents/carers who helped to make this day a success for all.
Jo Dykes (1A) and Jenny Jenkinson (1B)
Year 2A & 2B
What a wonderful start to the term! It is just incredible how quickly students have settled into routines and have jumped back into their learning with such enthusiasm.
In English we are travelling along with procedures which the students have thoroughly enjoyed. Following on from the story ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl, students will create a procedure to make something disgusting for Grandma. Exploring those adjectives that make something truly stomach churning and using fabulous verbs, has been fun.
In science we are learning about life cycles and no doubt your child has spoken about the mealworms we have in the classroom. These will give us an opportunity to observe a life cycle up close and see what happens during the metamorphosis stage when our worms will turn into Beetles. This is a truly engaging unit and you may find your child out in the garden searching for critters and plants to observe.
For those families that have Netflix there is G rated documentary series called the Magical Land of Oz that you might find interesting to watch. It’s narrated by our much beloved Barry Humphries and is all about Australian animals.

Year 3A & 3B
It’s hard to believe we are almost half way through term 3! In the last few weeks the children have been working industriously on various assessment tasks. We have been enjoying reading The Lorax book in English and writing a retell of the story from another character’s perspective. This story is about Sustainability which has fitted in beautifully with our Health Unit.
We have been exploring length, capacity and mass in Mathematics, with hands-on activities that are great for learning. We have been very pleased with the creativity shown in the children’s assessments. How fortunate we are to have such a rich and varied curriculum for children to experience today.

Shine
This term I am teaching a program with the Yr 6 girls called Shine. It is such a powerful program that looks at 3 key thoughts about Worth, Strength and Purpose. During the first week I spoke about having value that cannot be added or taken from. I explained that no amount of money, fashion, material possessions, good looks, talent or skill can either add or take from their value as a human being. A very powerful visual activity that demonstrated this was using a dollar bill. I held up a $50 note and asked them how much the note was worth. I then scrunched it up and threw it on the ground and asked them again if it still held its same value to which they replied, ‘of course’. I then stood on the note with my dirty shoe, rubbing mud on it and again asked the same question. They all agreed that it still had the same value. Lastly, I asked them if it would still have the same value if someone were to spit on it and throw it away. By this time they could see the object of the lesson and it is one that applies to all of us. No matter how badly you are treated by people in your life, no matter how badly you may have even treated yourself, your life has intrinsic value simply because you are a human being. So today, if you’re one of those people who struggle with this concept, I hope that is an encouragement for you. You are valuable! You have worth! You are precious! You are unique!
Have a great week.
