Principal’s Report

Excellent Student Engagement and Behaviour

It has been wonderful walking into classes to see students so engaged in class lessons and activities and to observe exemplary student behaviour both in and outside of the classroom. I congratulate teachers and students for the high expectations that are being set by teachers, and met by students. I am always proud of our school but wanted to highlight just how smooth and productive the transition back to schooling has been this Term.

P&C SKYPE Meeting This Week Wed June 10 at 6:30pm

If you would like to help out or have some new ideas please come along as we are always looking for new faces. Link to log into the meeting will be emailed to all parents on Wednesday.

Smooth Drop Off and Pick up Procedures

Thank you to all families for complying with our various new procedures in place at drop off and pick up. Certainly there is a much smoother and calmer exit from our classrooms than we have ever had in the past. I welcome any feedback or observations from parents around our new procedures.

Purchase your new School Jumper and School Hat

Note all purchases need to be made through the online Flexi school system as the Uniform Shop is not currently open of a Friday.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Our Uniform Shop is stocked up with new polar fleece jackets. No doubt with cool weather coming these jackets will sell quickly. A reminder that all students require a school hat every day at lunch time and for outside lessons. Please check your child has a named hat and it is in their bag each day. Hats will not be lent to students by the school. Students without the correct school jumper will be offered a clean second hand jumper until they have their own. We ask parents to wash and return these after use to school.

Semester One Student Reports

Student reports for Semester One will be modified to reflect the content that students have completed and been assessed on while at school in Term One and Two. Teachers will report on the subject areas of English, Maths, Science, Health and PE (combined mark of swimming Term One 8 weeks and Health Unit completed, 5 weeks), Music and LOTE (Japanese Yrs 5&6). Reports will be emailed to parents for the first time on the final day of Term Two. Please ensure the office has your most current up to date email address. If you do not have access to email, please contact the office for other arrangements to be made.

Remember a ‘C’ rating (Yrs 3-6) means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (Yrs P-6) will be held next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email in Term 3 describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

Childrens’ Learning Styles – a way of developing a love of learning!

EVERY child is UNIQUE and every child has their own way of learning, their own interests and unique strengths and because of this our LEARNING STYLES are also unique!

One way that we can teach our children in a way that fosters a love of learning is to support their unique way of learning or Learning Style.

Have you ever wondered why some children like to fill out worksheets and others avoid them? Howard Gardner, a Harvard University Professor, developed the theory of “multiple intelligences” categorizing all the ways that children learn.

These 8 “learning languages” identify our unique learning styles. Identifying and using learning activities based on your child’s learning style, will support them to develop a love of learning.

The 8 “learning languages” are:

  1. Linguistic - "Word Smart" – These children learn best through listening, reading, writing and literature.
  2. Logical-Mathematical - "Number/Reasoning Smart" – These children learn best through solving problems and mechanics.
  3. Spatial - "Picture Smart" – These children learn through pictures, art and 3-D materials.
  4. Bodily - Kinesthetic - "Movement Smart" – These children learn through movement.
  5. Musical - "Rhythm and Song Smart" – These children learn through music, dancing and singing.
  6. Interpersonal - "People Smart" – These children learn through discussions and projects.
  7. Intrapersonal - "Self Smart" – These children learn through self-expression. You can find them drawing pictures, creating art, journaling and spending time in calm places.
  8. Naturalist - "Outdoor/Nature Smart"- These children learn best from being outdoors.

Which learning style fits your child? When trying to answer this question you are probably having a hard time deciding on just one style? That is because humans are complex. We have a variety of interests and every new life experience leads us to new interests. Children have multiple learning styles and providing learning experiences rich in all of these learning styles allows your child to practice skills in new ways.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Great to have everyone back, students have settled in wonderfully. Well done to everyone.

This fortnights rule is a Be safe rule.

The BUZZ Phrase is - “I Choose to Defuse”. Teachers will be discussing this with their classes.

  • I say STOP if someone or something is upsetting me.
  • I WALK away from the situation to a safe place.
  • I TALK to someone I can trust.
  • I CONTROL myself and keep my COOL.
  • I can solve problems in a calm manner.
  • I speak to staff about it to get ideas how to solve issues.

Have a great fortnight.

Something to Celebrate

Here's the rocket being emptied by the school captains at the end of Week 6. It was a reward that was achieved by filling the rocket last term. The focus behaviour was mainly for lunch and playtimes where plastic balls were given to students who were having FUN to be FUN (Being Flexible, Understanding and Negotiating). There were over 600 balls in total that were placed in the rocket so the whole school was rewarded with a little extra freeplay.

This was well deserved as we had excellent behaviour data around this area.

The Rocket will return in Term 3 with a new behaviour focus.

Year 3/4C

Great to see all the students again and their enthusiasm to be back at school. I would like to thank all my parents and carers for the wonderful job they have done with their children and their home schooling. Your understanding and participation through this time has been greatly appreciated.

We are now all back into full swing finalising units and revising over areas in our learning. Students have jumped right back into being at school again and are doing well. Thank you for your co-operation with the small changes at drop off and pick up due to restrictions, after ironing out a few kinks we have managed to make things run as smoothly as possible. It has also been great to see students taking on board the responsibility of washing their hands more often throughout the school day and it has been obvious that has happened with your support from home during this time.

Thanks again for everything you do to support your child’s learning and our school community.

Lovely to be Back!

It has been wonderful to see the Yr 4 students all back in their own classroom. What a pleasure to see so many happy faces and to hear the conversations between the children sharing their special memories at home. We have spent the last two weeks re-establishing routines and have been busy talking about poetry and growing seeds. The students have been innovating on poems and identifying rhyming words, onomatopoeia words, and spoonerisms. This week in Science, we have been investigating how bean seeds grow in different planting mediums like sand, gravel, cotton wool, potting mix in the sun and seeds in potting mix kept in the fridge. We have all made predictions on which medium will produce maximum growth.

Japanese learning from home

During the learning from home stage, students were sent some online tasks for Japanese. They were to choose a pet, one that they have, or had or would like to have. Students were to draw their pets and to write some sentences to talk about it. After some practise, students have voice recorded themselves speaking in Japanese. They have all finished with the sentence: I am a responsible pet owner, in Japanese! It was a fun and creative task! Well done everyone!

Our Senior Shirts have arrived!

It was smiles all round when students arrived back at school after our long break from our regular school routine. The excitement on their faces when seeing that their senior shirts had finally arrived was priceless.

Garden Club News

This week we were very proud to reveal our ‘big garden welcome sign’ on the fence line for all students to enjoy. We recycled plastic bottle lids to make our colourful sign to help show directions on where to find our flourishing garden. Hazel in grade 5 deserves a special thank you for all her hard work in helping with the design.

Our snow peas have doubled in height and we are eagerly waiting to try the new produce.

We have also tried growing Poor Man’s Beans which were often eaten back in the war time.

Our sunflowers are taller than all of us and the tomatoes have been a big hit with regular pickings each day!

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills involves the use of the smaller muscles of the hands, such as when doing up buttons, opening lunch boxes or using pencils or scissors. Fine motor skill efficiency significantly influences the quality of the task outcome as well as the speed of task performance. Efficient fine motor skills requires a number of independent skills to work together to appropriately manipulate the object or perform the task.

Fine Motor skills include:

Pencil skills (scribbling, colouring, drawing, writing)
Scissors skills (cutting)
Construction skills (lego, duplo)
Self-care (tying shoelaces, opening lunch boxes).

Our Fine motor skills program focusses on the coordination of small muscle movements which occur in the fingers, usually in coordination with the eyes. Our activities involve starting with primitive gestures such as grabbing at objects to more advanced activities that involve precise eye–hand coordination. The development of these skills allows students to be able to complete tasks such as writing, drawing, and cutting.

Love One Another

I want to speak about the generosity of people during this time of restriction through COVID. A few weeks ago I was informed by another Chaplain that the organisation, QCCC at Mapleton (Yr 5’s annual camp) were still running their kitchen and instead of hosting schools, they were making frozen meals and distributing them to people in need. When I went to pick up some of these meals, I was blown away at the kindness and generous donation that I was able to collect. I walked away with 3 bags full of beautiful meals that the chefs had created. I shed some tears on the way home as I thought of the families that I would be able to give this food to, and the blessing that it was to be able to help people at a time of crisis in their lives. The act of giving and helping people in a practical way astounds me every time. That together we are all capable of caring for one another whether it be financially, physically, emotionally, spiritually is up to each person to decide. I just want to encourage each of you to look around you and find ways to show love to someone who might be doing it tough right now. A simple card in the mail, saying you are thinking of them, could make the hugest difference in a person’s life. We can all be a blessing to one another. It might just be a baked cake or a bunch of flowers from your garden. Maybe you have excess fruit or other produce? Whatever you can do to make a difference in someone else’s life, is well worth the time and effort. Please see me if you would like to help spread the love, or if you are in need of some help. Let’s continue being a community that shows care and kindness for those around us.

Have a wonderful week everyone.
