Our Facebook Page

Maleny State School Facebook page is now 1 year old

https://www.facebook.com/MalenyStateSchool/

Thank you to the many parents who have engaged with our School Facebook page and passed on their positive comments to us.

Please encourage your friends to engage with our Facebook page as we have found it to be very beneficial in providing parents with a more effective means of communication. This not only allows our community to be more knowledgeable of what is occurring within the school but ultimately helps to increase parent participation within our school while promoting what our school does to our wider community.

Facebook also helps us to communicate and promote all of the wonderful things that we do and student achieve at school that can often go unnoticed.

Uniform Shop 2020 Holiday Opening Times

Monday, 20 January 2020

8:00am – 10:00am

Wednesday, 22 January 2020

8:00am – 10:00am

Friday, 24 January 2020

8:00am – 10:00am

School commences on Tuesday 28 January 2020.

Volunteers are required to assist selling uniforms. Please leave a message for Corinne, who is organising helpers for these days, at the office.

Remember all helpers are volunteers giving up their holiday time to assist families getting organised for the start of the year. Thank you for showing them your appreciation.

Donate old uniforms or school bags

Good quality used uniforms are needed by our uniform shop. This includes hats, black shoes, school bags, shirts, jumpers, etc. Please drop these into the office or uniform shop.

We ask parents of Yr 6 students if they are in the position to gift any quality uniform items back to the school to assist future families. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Black Shoes – White Socks

Please ensure your children help to make our school look and feel great in 2020. It is an expectation EVERY student in every year level will have BLACK SHOES (joggers) and WHITE socks to commence the year.

Register for Prep Now!

It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2020 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au .

Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2020. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2020 please encourage them to contact us immediately.

No Tuckshop

Please note there will be No Tuckshop on Friday of the last week of school (13th December). This will allow convenors to ensure the tuckshop is not carrying excess food over the holiday break and is organised and ready to trade at the beginning of 2020.

Crazy Hair Day

Our Student Council will be holding a Crazy Hair Day on Friday 6 December to raise funds towards their graduation costs and to assist the Garden Club. Students from all classes can colour their hair at home, wear wigs or design funky hair styles. To participate we ask students to donate a gold coin. It is essential that students Do Not bring hair spray or hair coloured spray cans to school.

Please no Candy Canes or Lollies

It is wonderful to see children in the spirit and exchanging Christmas Cards with one another at this time of year, however many cards have candy canes or treats attached which do not fit in with the Departments’ Healthy Food Choices policies. Parents have also asked if children cannot give out candy canes or treats as they do not want their children receiving these. Thank you for your understanding with this matter.

Year 5 Camp

Next week our Yr 5 students are at Mapleton Camp on Monday to Wednesday. I look forward to joining them in activities throughout the week.

Leaving Maleny in 2020

We are currently organising our class formation for 2020. It is important that we are advised ASAP if students won’t be returning to our school next year. Please email or call Desley in the office on Ph 5499 8333.

Have a Magic Week in Maleny. John

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase

Our whole school Buzz phrase for weeks 9 & 10 is a Be Respectful Rule - “Be Nice, Be Quiet”. This means that students model sensible behaviour at all times. They move quietly to supervised areas, sit quietly and follow adult directions. Students are expected to be nice to others and think about treating others as they would like to be treated.

Year 4A, 4B & 4C

We’ve had a busy few weeks working on assessment tasks. The Yr 4’s completed their drama performance on stage for their peers. We focused on projecting our voices and using expression to convey the personality traits of the different characters.

In Science the children have enjoyed designing and investigating their own force game as part of their science assessment for this term.

In English we have been focusing on advertising and investigating persuasive techniques including visual, audio and language features. The students have been comparing ads about toys and food from the past and the present. They are currently designing their own cereal box and incorporating persuasive techniques to appeal to their intended audience.

For Health the students are busy researching a chosen country in the world to help us understand cultural differences. They are creating a PowerPoint to share with their peers that will inform others about traditions, celebrations, foods eaten and customs specific to this culture.

Leadership Activities

Recently the Yr 5 classes have been doing Leadership activities once a week with Ms Peta Cave. These activities focus on developing leadership skills and identifying personal strengths and areas we can improve. So far we have investigated Inclusion (making sure that everyone has a turn and gets a fair go), Co-operation (working together as a team, helping others, not taking control and listening to others), Communication (talking to people clearly and making sure we speak respectfully - it’s OK to disagree with others but you need to be respectful) and Problem Solving. We will continue to do this once a week. We will also have a couple of sessions while we are at camp.

Here are some photos of a few of the activities:

Also we are VERY EXCITED about camp coming up in Week 9.

Year 6 News

What a busy term we are having working through all our assessment and preparing students for their transition into High School next year! During this term, Yr 6 students have been involved in a science experiment involving the growing of mould. The students were required to set up a fair experiment and track the progress of the mould on a weekly basis. This experiment was followed by an analysis of the mould, recommending the ideal conditions for its growth.

We have also been very busy trying to complete our lovely canvas pieces that are to be displayed at the upcoming Yr 6 Graduation Ceremony.

WAR ON WASTE

We have some wonderful news to share in regard to our ten-cent container collection. We have now made $575 which is over our goal for 2019. Thank you to Christopher, Thomas and Samson for bringing in extra containers. Well done everybody!

The Garden Club members have been busy mulching, planting new seedlings in our new wicking beds and weeding. We’ve been enjoying tasting the different coloured cherry tomatoes this week. The yellow ones have been a favourite for many of us.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Happiness

I was listening to a speaker the other day talking about happiness. He was talking about the elusiveness of happiness – that for many people it is just one click away, one purchase away, one relationship away, one drink away, one party away etc. The concept that happiness is only found in the possessions we acquire or the job status we have or the relationship we are in is not sustainable. When I went to Cambodia 20 years ago and worked in an orphanage, there was so much happiness, despite the lack of any material possession. So is happiness only found in superficial pleasures and materialism?

The key to happiness in my own life has been when I have invested time and love into other people. When we are living for a purpose greater than just ourselves, a deep happiness and joy comes. The saying, ‘that to give is better than to receive’ is so true. Whenever I have given my time, or a gift or words of encouragement to another person, I know that I am filled with great happiness. So the mystery is simple. Whenever we invest in the things that truly matter (people and relationships) we will not only feel fulfilled but experience a deep happiness that cannot be obtained for any length of time in any other way. So give to others. Live to see opportunities to build others up and make someone else’s life that much happier and then you too will feel happier.

Coming Up…

  2. Grandparent’s Group is every Monday from 9-10am
  3. Breakfast Club is every Wednesday morning
  4. Mentors – if you have a spare hour a week and would like to invest it in making a difference in the life of a child, please see Chappy for more details.
