Volunteers Morning Tea

Each year we like to thank our many volunteers that assist in so many different ways within our school. This year our Morning Tea will be held in our School Hall on Monday the 2nd December at 10:00am. Please keep this date free as I am looking forward to thanking you for your contributions in person over a cup of tea. Invitations will come home on Friday, on time RSVP’s are essential for catering purposes.

Remembrance Day

On Monday our School Captains lead our Remembrance Day commemorations with a 9:00 service in our Hall. I would like to acknowledge and thank Chris Brooker from the Maleny RSL who spoke and engaged all of our students, reflecting on past events and the importance of Remembrance Day. Our recorder group were excellent and set the mood playing Amazing Grace and the National Anthem. Students’ behaviour and respect were outstanding. A dropped pin could have been heard from the time the first footstep entered the hall until the last one left. Two students from each class had the honour of laying a piece of rosemary on a wreath at the front of the Hall.

School Captain voting

On Monday a special assembly for all Year 4 and 5 classes was held to hear the speeches of the 2020 School Captain nominees with voting afterwards. Sports and Music Captains elections will occur next Thursday. I must commend all candidates as their speeches were all of exceptional quality. This year we shall also be announcing a new position titled Environment and Sustainability Captain. Parents are most welcome to attend both events.

Kuluin: Interhouse Maths Challenge Champions for 2019

Kuluin won the title of Interhouse Maths Challenge Champion for 2019 after they survived a close contest from the other houses in our recent Interhouse Maths Challenge. All of our students from Prep to Year 6 were challenged with a variety of both individual and team questions that were set by their teachers. The day enabled our students to become engaged with Mathematics and at the same time they enjoyed the friendly rivalry of an Interhouse competition.

Yr 5-6 Team Winners – Barrun Team 4 - Freya, Violet, Zac, Levi, Jessica
Yr 3-4 Team Winners – Tibro Team 3 – Leilani, Zac, Indi, Michell, Thomas, Oakley
Yr 1-2 Team Winners – Kuluin Team 2 – Selena, Hopi, Olivia, Trent, Serenity
Prep Team Winners – Tibro Team 2 - Georgia, Phoebe, Leighton, Isobel

Congratulations to everyone for a great day. Thank-you to all staff involved who assisted on and/or before the day. Looking forward to next year’s Math Interhouse Challenge Day!

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

PBL Buzz Phrase

Starting week 5 we have a new behaviour focus which has been determined by the current behaviour data. The focus is “First time every time”.

To promote this focus we have a new incentive system that involves the whole school. When a class demonstrates the behaviour “First time every time” they will earn a “power ball” to place in the bucket. “Power balls” can be earnt in class time, specialist lessons and eating time. On Tuesday at parade, each class will bring their bucket and empty their “power balls” into the rocket. When the rocket is full, the whole school will earn the reward of 20 mins free play.

PBL Team

Volunteers’ Morning Tea

On Monday 2nd December at 10:00am our school is having a Volunteers’ Morning Tea to thank all of our very supportive and hard-working volunteers who have helped our school throughout the year. This year the event will be held in our School Hall. Invitations will go home this week and it is essential that all RSVPs are returned no later than 22nd November.

It is very important that we have accurate numbers for planning. If something comes up and you are unable to attend after replying “yes” please let us know.

As we have many volunteers at our school, it is possible that we may have omitted a name. If you know of someone who has been a reliable volunteer for our school and does not receive an invitation this week could you please phone 5499 8333 and let us know. We look forward to seeing as many volunteers as possible at our morning tea

Prep A & Prep B

Welcome to our 2020 Prep Families.

It has been a great pleasure to meet our new families for next year at our Prep Transition Days. The sun has been shining and the children have enjoyed exploring the garden and the classrooms. Some of our current Prep children have had the opportunity to be leaders and welcome our new friends.

Transition to Year 1

Towards the end of Term, the Prep classes will visit the Year 1 classrooms and meet our current Year 1 Teachers. They will also get to play in the Junior Playground and begin to learn the rules and routines involved in playing and eating in the Junior School.

Musical Instruments for Science

In the coming week, students will be designing the musical instrument that they will be making here at school for our Exploring Light and Sound Unit. Mrs D has asked them to begin a collection of materials that can easily be used to make their planned musical instrument. During the assessment, students will plan the instrument, make an instrument, test its sound and then modify the same instrument and explain the effect of the change. I appreciate your support of the creative and industrious ideas of your students and look forward to seeing (and hearing!) the various sounds they come up with.

Design Technologies

Students have been busy learning various puppet designs for their upcoming assessment task. There is much excitement surrounding the future puppet show and students are beginning to learn jokes to tell at the show. Thank you to those of you who have shared or practised jokes with your children. We will advise closer to the date exactly when our puppet shows will be on.

Jo Dykes and Jenny Jenkinson

Year 2A & 2B

Halfway through our very last term for 2019! Where is the time going?

Swimming has started for Term 4! With the weather heating up we are moving toward our favourite swimming holes and beaches to cool down. During this time an awareness of water safety becomes very important, and we encourage all families to take part the school’s Swimming Program. It is great to see so many participating students, as this is an invaluable skill for all children.

We also had our Maths Competition last week which was an amazing amount of fun for the school.

A big congratulations go out to those students who were presented with their medallions. Well done! And to all students who contributed to their team’s points.

Just a friendly reminder to families that attendance every day is very important as we are carrying out assessment.

Also, all students need to have a hat. Please make sure your child has a hat and it is labelled.

Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain & Libby Ferguson

Year 2/3C

During weeks 4 and 5 this term it has been a pleasure to have a practicum student from the USC, Shiden Green. The students warmly accepted Mr Green into our classroom to share in our learning journeys. Mr Green worked with students within small group and whole class lessons. A highlight in which students particularly enjoyed was a fabulous math lesson Mr Green planned and delivered utilising the school’s Beebots and Robotic Mice to extend our learning in locations and directions. We wish Mr Green all the best in his future endeavours in becoming a teacher.

Kerry Lees

Year 3A & 3B

Both classes are working hard to complete assessment tasks this week. The swimming lessons are going well now that the weather has warmed up! Thank you very much for sending your child in their swimming gear. This has saved us lots of time and potential stress, and we appreciate it.

The children are very excited with the ‘First Time, Every time’ reward strategy that has been implemented for the whole school. Perhaps you could ask your child about it? The children found the Interhouse Maths Challenge fun. The children are really enjoying making their Science Guessing Game in Scratch for Digital Technology. Some students are also very happy to have joined the school choir and are learning their words to some Christmas songs.

What’s in Your Periphery?

Last week I went to a Chaplain’s professional development day. It was such an encouragement and I left feeling very challenged by a speaker. The topic that was shared was about how we can sometimes get so focused on the job before us and so goal oriented, that we don’t see what is going on in our peripheral vision. He spoke about an experiment that had been done where a group of students were given the task of walking across a room and giving a presentation. They only had 5 minutes to walk across the room but unbeknown to them, there were a few people planted in the room, who would come across their paths and having a crisis of some sort. The experiment looked at whether the students were willing to stop and help. Sadly none of them stopped. The experiment was done again with another group of people given the same task but with 20 minutes to get across the room. This time 40% did stop to offer help. The results were confronting and challenging. Do we get so focused that we no longer see the people who are in need? As a chaplain, am I noticing those students or families who are crying out for help? As a parent, am I getting so engrossed in my work that I don’t see my own child in need of my attention? It definitely gave me something to think about and I hope it encourages you as well.

Have a great week.
