Principal’s Report
Country Fair
This year’s Country Fair was certainly the most successful and well patronised in my time at Maleny. The introduction of both the Primary and High School instrumental bands in addition to the High School rock bands were a hit and certainly increased crowd numbers. The Re/Max fireworks went off with a bang and seemed to just keep going on and on. Col Finley was excellent as MC along with all of our entertainment that saw many of our students and parents performing. I am always impressed by the enormous amount of planning and work that occurs before, during and after the event by our hardworking P&C, staff and parents – thank you.
I have included the profits of our class stalls below and sincerely thank everyone that donated items to all of our stalls. Thank you also to the wonderful helpers who worked on the stalls.
Cheese Platters + Shopping Bags = $452.10 Fairy Floss = $715.75 Nachos = $577 Lucky Dip = $585 Hot Dogs = $760 Putt Putt = $347.50 Clothing = $758.85 Ice Cream Sundaes = $708.40 |
Cake Stall = $432.60 Choc Toss = $110 Money Board = $443 Loose Change Containers = $700.55 Show bags = $705 Drink Toss = $563 Book Stall = $407.40 Bar = $940.90 BBQ = $824 |
Without the assistance from our sponsors this event cannot occur.
To all of you we are most appreciative.

World Teacher’s Day
Last Friday we celebrated our wonderful teachers with a special lunch. It was great to recognise the incredible efforts of our teachers and to see many children presenting their teachers with gifts, flowers and messages of thanks.
An acknowledgement of the work our teachers do each and every day of the week from our P&C President, Merrick Ilett, on behalf of the P&C was most appreciated by all. A big thank you to Chappy and Amity for setting up the staffroom and Dee who baked the best cupcakes on the Coast for all our staff. Our teachers do an amazing job in supporting all of our students and well and truly deserve recognition for their professional skills and the supportive culture that they create for our students to thrive in.
Walk for Daniel
Recognise, React and Report - these are the key components that we teach our children to keep them safe. On Friday we held a special whole school assembly to join in Australia’s Biggest Safety Lesson along with many other schools right across the nation. Students wore red and watched safety videos and skits from our Yr 6 students on assembly. This was followed by a rainforest walk where they were challenged to count the number of red balloons hidden in the forest (22). We raised $370 that will be donated to the Daniel Morecombe Foundation. Check that your children understand what Recognise, Report and React mean and can name 5 safe adults that they would be able to turn to and seek support should they need.
Colour Fun Run
This year’s event was extremely successful and a lot of fun raising $12 000 which was an increase on 2018. Prizes are expected to arrive in the next 3 weeks and will then be distributed to students. Once again thank you to Charmaine our coordinator of this event and all families that participated.
Inter House Maths Competition
Our Inter House Maths Competition will be held in the hall this Thursday 31 October, it is as much about team and school spirit as maths. Students will have the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively in groups to solve maths challenges. While students will work in year level groups, teachers have spent considerable time in differentiating maths challenges to ensure individual needs are catered for. Students are asked to wear their sports shirts and join in what is sure to be fun. Presentations for House and year level winners will occur on Tuesday 5 Nov 2:20pm.

From the Deputy Principal
Ciao!
A warm hello to you all again, as I return from being on long service leave, after having had a wonderful time in Italy, Dubai and Singapore, visiting many wonderful sights and experiencing the culture of these amazing places.
After having travelled to different countries again, I am reminded of how lucky we are in Australia to have the opportunity within our Education system to learn about other cultures and how important learning another language can be, and the opportunities that can be opened up to us if we can speak another language. It has inspired me to learn another language.
On my return it has been lovely visiting each of the class rooms again to see everyone’s smiling faces and to check in and observe how students’ have progressed and how they have grown academically and socially over the last 7 ½ weeks since I last saw them all.
A big thank you to Kerry Lees and Greg Corkin who both did a marvellous job replacing me whilst I was on leave.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Our Buzz Phrase for weeks 3 and 4 is a Be Safe Rule - “Recognise, React, Report”. This coincided with Day for Daniel on Friday 25th October. Classes will be discussing how to recognise the clues our bodies give us when we are feeling unsafe; react by running away or yelling loudly; and report to adults – parents, grandparents, teachers, school principal, police. Classes will discuss the importance of always telling someone where they are going, what time they will be home, who they are with and if there are any changes to plans. For more information and activities visit the Daniel Morecombe Foundation website -

Facing Challenges and Using the Experience to Enhance our Writing
At the end of third term our Yr 4s went on camp to Currimundi and this was their first camp with the school. During this term we read a quest novel called Rowan of Rin which we all enjoyed very much. Throughout the story, the characters had to face many challenges when climbing a mountain and crawling through caves, but the students could see that these experiences helped Rowan, the small timid boy to become a hero in the end. Whilst at Currimundi the students had the opportunity to complete many activities and two were perfectly suited to the novel we read. Being able to complete the caving and rock-climbing activity enabled the students to internalise the challenges and worries that the characters experienced in the story.

Our English assessment for the beginning of this term, required the students to write a written response to a specific part of the story. Many students wrote about the caving scene in the novel and related this to their own caving experience from camp.
In Drama the students are now writing a short script from a part of the Rowen of Rin novel that incorporated tension. They are having to incorporate sound, costumes, backdrops and actions in their script to entertain their peers.

In science we have been enjoying "Sixty Seconds Slam" challenges where we play games involving push and pull forces. A lot of the challenges involved ping pong balls. After playing the games we complete science diagrams showing our understanding of different types of forces.

A HUGE thank you to all the donations sent in to help with the Country Fair, especially items for the Cake and Ice Cream Sundae Stall. Many thanks to everyone who worked at the stalls on the night. It was a great night and we managed to raise $1141 from the two stalls, a fantastic effort!

Kind Regards

Leadership Process
Over the last couple of weeks, students wishing to become 2020 Leaders (School, House or Music Captains) have submitted their nomination packs to the Deputy Principal, ready for the upcoming shortlisting process. This has required students to gather evidence of how they have been representing the school in various activities, volunteering time and assisting the school community. These specific examples of being a leader were signed-off in the student’s Leadership Passport by a supervising adult. Passports were then handed in, along with their nomination form and an A4 page about themselves and information about how they meet the leadership criteria. The next step in this process will be interviews. Successful candidates from this step will then write speeches to present to all teaching staff at a staff meeting, as well as deliver the speeches to all current Year 4 and 5 classes. The students will then vote for the various positions.
Congratulations to the Year 5 students who have completed the nomination process and good luck to those students who are currently working towards the next step.
In Class
In class, students have been working on their Health assessment, which is promoting a healthy behaviour to their peers. This has been a poster or PowerPoint which encourages others to adopt a healthy behaviour like drinking more water or doing 60 minutes of daily physical activity. This involved some research to support their proposal.

In Digital Technology students are working collaboratively on their Scratch projects (coding), developing a maze game which teaches young children about a topic (Healthy Behaviours or What you need to do in a Natural Disaster). Later in the term students will share their group maze games with each other.
In Week 3 the Year 5 classes started working with Peta Cave (our Engagement and Well-being Teacher) on activities that will help to foster teamwork and develop leadership skills. These sessions will go over the next 5 weeks and will also be included into camp activities.
We are very excited about camp, which is coming up in Week 9 of this term. Students will travel to the Mapleton camp to experience various activities like rock climbing walls, orienteering, canoeing, archery, the Giant Swing and the Glider Possum. They will need to work together, communicate and encourage others in order to complete these sessions.

Potting up Seedlings for Our New Wicking Beds
It has been wonderful to see so many new younger members from Yr 1 and Yr 2 eager to join the Garden Club and our older members being so patient and showing them what to do. We spent the day potting up lots of sunflower seedlings which we are hoping to plant in the garden beds that run down to the Enrichment Centre.

OUR NEW WICKING BEDS ARRIVE NEXT WEEK
We have been potting up seedlings for our new wicking beds that will arrive next weekend. Many thanks to the very generous IBC KIng business at Northgate for being so kind. The students from the Garden Club will put the wicking beds together which will be a huge task. If we have any parents that would like to be involved, we would appreciate your assistance on Wednesday, 6th November during our lunch breaks. (11:00 - 11:45 or 1:00 - 1:30). Please let me know if you can volunteer and help supervise the creation of our new wicking beds.
Happy Customers Supporting the Garden Club at the Country Fair
The students were eager to bag up some of our produce and sold 11 bags of salad leaves at the Country Fair! We are looking forward to delivering some amazing news on parade this week to celebrate reaching our $500 dollar target for our 10 cent container collection!
Kind Regards

Instrumental Music News
Congratulations to the members of the Hinterland Combined Schools Concert Band on receiving a Gold Award for their performance at Music Fest last Thursday.
I am immensely proud of the way the band performed and the way they presented themselves at the Music Festival 2019.
The standard of musicianship was impressive.
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear them at our last performance for 2019 at the Hinterland Combined Schools Concert Band Music Awards. The performance will be held at Maleny State School Hall from 4:00pm on Wednesday 6 November.

DON’T LOSE FOCUS
I was watching a great film the other day called “The Walk” and it was about a French high wire artist called Philippe Petit. He gained famed for walking between the Twin Towers in 1974. There is a scene in the movie that really struck me however and it was at the start of his career as a tight rope walker. He was practising walking on the high wire in a circus tent. He had no net underneath him and by this stage he was very self-assured and confident in his own ability to effortlessly walk across the wire at this height. He had only 3 steps to go to reach the platform at the other side and just when you think he has basically made it to safety he lets his guard down and slips and falls, thankfully clutching the wire in his hands, but dangling precariously metres above the ground. It’s a very intense scene where he is clinging on for dear life and you can see the fear and realisation in his eyes as he pulls himself to safety. When he climbs down from the wire his mentor and coach says to him that most high wire walkers fall to their death when they are only a few steps away from the other side because they lose their focus. It spoke profoundly to me about how easy it is to start our lives with great focus and determination and then somewhere along the way to lose our focus and get drawn away from what our life’s purpose actually is.
My dad has always said to me that it’s not how we start our race but how we finish it that matters. I have known many people who have started out with great passion and drive, but somewhere along their journey they lost their hope or purpose and ended up making choices that had devastating long term consequences. It was just another reminder to myself to stop and check that I was still heading in the right direction and not to become arrogant or so self-assured that I was no longer teachable or willing to listen to correction.
Just something to think about. Have a great week everyone.
Reminder that every Monday at 9am I run a Grandparents Group in the Chappy Room. All are welcome to come and have a cuppa and stay for a chat.
