Principal’s Report
Re/Max Country Fair
Join us this Friday at 3:30 for our 2019 Country Fair. There will be no shortage of excitement in the air with rides, food, class stalls, showbags and loads of entertainment for everyone. A huge thank you to RE/MAX who are sponsoring our Fireworks once again this year.
New Junior Playground
Check out our new playground for Yrs 1 to 3 that was installed over the holiday break. The kids absolutely love it even to the extent I am told a Yr 1 student was seen kissing it. I would like to acknowledge and thank our hard working P&C and the Department of Education who have partnered together to fund this project (along with a school contribution).

Class of 1969 Golden Reunion
On Sunday I had the honour of welcoming back the Year 8 Class of 1969 and their past teachers. I welcomed the class at the Historical Society precinct along with President Kevin Howell and Reunion Coordinator Desley Malone and past teachers and then conducted a tour of our school. It is always great to hear the recollections of events from the past and reflect on how the school has changed over time. All past students were grateful for the tour and very positive about the changes that have taken place at our school.

Taken in the Yr 1 classroom, the original school built in 1913 and shifted to the present site in the 60s. Every student who started school at the Maleny State School has been in this classroom.
2019 Donations for Class Stalls
Donations for the following items can be dropped off at the office at any time.
Ice cream, toppings, Corn Chips, salsa sauce, tomatoes, onions, cakes with ingredients list attached, soft cheeses, dips and biscuits.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
Parent helpers required to assist on stalls (see your child’s teacher) and help set up and put things away after the fireworks.
2020 Classes
Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4
Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by Friday 25 October 2019 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2020. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts. This does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for.
All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form. Any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered.
Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2020 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2020 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.
P&C Meeting – We Need You!
Our next P&C meeting for the term will be held on Wednesday 13 November. Please come along at 6:30pm everyone’s ideas and support are welcome. We will look at a wrap up of our Country Fair and timing of 2020 events.
Register for Prep now! Don’t wait.
It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2020 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to admin@malenyss.eq.edu.au.
Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2020. I look forward to meeting with you soon.
If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2020 please encourage them to contact us immediately.
Prep Enrolment Interview Dates: 22, 23 & 25 October
If you have not booked your Prep enrolment interview please do so as soon as possible.
Please Call 54998333 to book your 20 min interview with your child. Enrolment forms can be collected from the office or downloaded from our Web Site.
Welcome to Prep and Transition Days
Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on: Wednesday 30 October, 6 and 13 of November from 9:00am until 10:30am. Parents can order uniforms for students on these days. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with Good Start Centre staff.
Year 7 at Maleny State High School 2020
Transition Days: Transition days for 2020 Year 7s will be held during Week 6 of Term 4 (13-14 of November). This 2-day event will only be for those students who have submitted enrolment applications prior to these days.
Have a Great Week, see you at the Country Fair.
John
From the Deputy Principal
Welcome back to a busy and exciting last term of 2019. The first week was fantastic and it was great to get into classrooms and see the work that all classes are completing.
Week 3 starts with a Pupil Free Day (Monday 21st October). While our students are getting an extra day to rest and relax, our teachers will be hard at work completing Professional Development activities. This includes looking at a variety of school and student data and coming up with action plans to continue to improve Maleny State School’s performance. Teachers regularly take part in moderation processes to ensure that there is consistency in teaching and results across our classes. On the Pupil Free Day, Maleny State School teachers will be participating in moderation with Mapleton State School. This will not only assist to see consistency in marking between the two schools, but will also allow our teachers the chance to share and view teaching strategies, activities and resources.
Our teachers regularly ask themselves the following questions to assess and improve their teaching performance.
- What am I teaching?
- Why am I teaching it?
- How will I teach it?
- How will I know when students have learnt it or not?
- What is next….if this works? If it doesn’t work? Where do I go for help?
Studies show that parents are also vital in the education of our students. Parents have found using the below questions has created opportunities for informative conversations with their children. The five questions parents can ask their children are:
- What did you learn today?
- How did you do?
- What did you do if you didn’t understand?
- How can you improve on your learning?
- What are you most proud of?
Performing these tasks enhances the learning culture at Maleny State School and will be important as we move further in to Term 4 and closer to our final round of reporting for the year.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Buzz Phrase – Weeks 1 & 2
Our Buzz phrase for the first two weeks of Term 4 is Be A Learner Rule - “Leaders Inspire”. This means that students are positive role models, work cooperatively and encourage others. They wear the School uniform with pride and always do their best to follow the 4 Be Rules. Everyone can be a leader.
PBL Team
Prep A & Prep B
Welcome back to Term 4. The Preps arrived back at school and were delighted to find a Post Office set up in each classroom. Each day after listening to the story, the students have been writing a letter to one of the characters. Their letter must include a greeting, question, suggestion and a sign off. The students are to be congratulated on their interesting ideas and improved writing skills.
This week we started our science unit “I like to move it, move it.” It was great fun moving our bodies to the theme song. It has been interesting looking for patterns in our environment and learning about growing patterns.
We are all looking forward to the Country Fair. Thank you to those who have signed our roster and volunteered to help on the day. Don’t forget to come along and support our “Prep Cheese Platter" stall.
Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)
Year 1A & 1B
We have had a great start to term four. The children have returned knowing the routines and expectations from day one. They are to be commended on how well they have dealt with their new before school routine of lining up in the eating area, ready to be collected by the classroom teacher at approximately 8:45am.
Interesting Musical Instruments – Year 1 Science Task
This term Yr 1 is investigating light and sound and will manipulate materials to see how light and sound are made. The children will be making their own musical instrument and will also make predictions about how they can change the sounds that their instrument produces. We will need recyclable materials brought in for the students to make their musical instruments out of. We will notify you when we need these materials sent in.
Roll-Up, Roll-Up – There's a Puppet Show in Town!
In a few weeks, the Yr 1’s will be creating their own hand puppets and telling jokes, using their creations in a short puppet show. Both 1A and 1B will combine for this event and all parents are welcome to attend this humorous half hour! More information will come home regarding the event details.
Thank you for all your support,
Jo Dykes and Jenny Jenkinson

Strength, Purpose and Worth
Last term I did a 10 week program with a small group of Yr 6 girls. The program is called Shine and deals with 3 topics of Self-worth, Strength and Purpose. One of the most powerful lessons relating to worth used a $50 note. I asked the girls if they believed that a person could lose their worth and they believed initially that a person’s worth could be taken from them. When I pulled out the $50 note and scrunched it up, I asked them if the value of the note had been lost, to which they responded “No.” When I stood on the note with my dirty shoe and again asked the same question, they agreed that ‘no, the note still had value. When I asked them if I was to spit on the note and throw it in the garbage, would it still be worth $50? They all nodded in understanding at the message I was teaching them - that the value of a person could not be taken or added to. We talked about how we can sometimes believe things that aren’t true. That by trying to be prettier, smarter or more popular DOES NOT ADD VALUE to a person. They already have value because they are human.
The program was concluded with a beautiful afternoon tea where the girls invited either their parents or a significant adult in their lives. The girls also made posters depicting their hopes and dreams for their future. The program was a huge success and each girl left knowing that their lives have intricate value, worth and purpose.
