2019 Voluntary Financial Contribution

The contribution for 2019 is $50 per child or $40 per child for families with three or more children enrolled at our school. Family contributions will be used to upgrade our technology resources (iPads, Laptops, Robotics equipment) allowing greater hands on access for all students in classrooms.

Principal’s Report

Year 6 Camp

Congratulations to our year six students who represented our school beautifully in Sydney, Canberra and Perisher recently on camp. As a principal it is a great feeling to receive so many compliments on our children’s behaviour at every venue we visited, including airports (where we were delayed for 2 hours). This is always a tremendous camp as there are so many ‘firsts’ for students. First time in a plane, first time to Sydney and Canberra, first time to see snow and ski, even first time to make a bed for some. Each day was absolutely action packed and this year we were able to post photos on the school Facebook page which parents sincerely appreciated. I would like to acknowledge the tremendous financial support of $100 per child that our P&C donates ever year. Also our awesome Apex Club, sponsors each child at $50.00 along with $60 from the Federal Government. Without these generous donations this trip would not be possible. It takes more than one fundraising event for the P&C to raise the $5000 donated to year six parents this year, please continue to support all of our P&C fundraising events to ensure that we can continue to offer camps to places like Canberra in the future.

School Concert

Join us next week for our whole school concert on Tuesday evening (10th September). The concert will commence at 6:00pm sharp, with food on sale at the tuckshop from 5:15pm. A gold coin donation is requested for admission. Each class will be performing an item along with some individual and small group combinations, in addition our school concert band will perform three pieces. There will be a short intermission where the tuckshop will also be open (the tuckshop will be closed during performances and the audience are encouraged to minimise movement during performances). We encourage parents to sit with their children and take responsibility for their behaviour and whereabouts during the evening. A note with a more detailed program will be sent home with students this week.

Colour Fun Run – Register Online now

Don’t miss our inaugural Colour Fun Run which is only 2 weeks away on Tuesday the 17 September at 1:30pm. Students will need an old white T-shirt to gain the best effect from the colours that will be spread around throughout the run. I am told new white shirts can be found for $3 at some of the bigger stores. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. As this event is a P&C fundraiser please ensure you have registered your child online and collected sponsors.

Father’s Day

A huge thank you to Mandy McMahon from our P&C for organising this year’s Father’s Day stall last week and also all of the parents that assisted to sell items. I am sure there were some great surprises for dad on Sunday morning. Children loved the shopping experience and put a lot of thought into their purchases for Dad. This P&C event raised $1100 profit, fantastic effort.

MALENY STATE HIGH SCHOOL - Enrolment

Last Wednesday the Maleny State High School held a parent information session for year 6 parents. If you missed this opportunity it is essential that you complete an enrolment package, available from the Maleny State High School (we also have a number of packages available at our office). Students must have their application lodged to be available to attend the High School Transition Days.

MALENY STATE HIGH SCHOOL - Open Day

On the 11th September, MSHS will be conducting a half day Open Day morning for parents 9:00 – 10:45.

Transition Days: Transition days for 2020 Year 7s will be held during Week 6 of Term 4 (13-14 of November). This 2-day event will be for only those students who have submitted enrolment applications prior to these days.

2020 Classes

Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4

Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by Friday 25 October 2019 if you would like us to consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2020. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made by the school to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. For requests to be considered they must be lodged on time on the correct form any request previously submitted in a past year must be resubmitted again this year if you wish the same circumstances to be considered. Our staffing formula is based on student day 8 2020 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2020 Prep students enrol now to assist us with our class structure organisation. It is also crucial that if families are leaving next year they alert us now.

P&C Meeting – We Need You!

Our last P&C meeting for the term will be held on Wednesday 11th September. Please come along at 6:30pm everyone’s ideas and support are welcome. Our Country Fair is in week 2 Term 4 so finalising the planning of this event will be a priority. We desperately need new parents to attend our meetings especially from our younger year levels.

Country Fair – Many Hands Make Light Work

2019 Donations for Class Stalls

Donations for the following items can be dropped off to your classroom at any time.

This year as per last year we are asking all families to donate items where they are able to rather than just the class running the stall as this has left us short of donations in the past. Each week will highlight/ advertise a particular item that we need donations for, however please send in any donations of the below items at any time. Your support is greatly appreciated.

ICAS testing

The annual ICAS or International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) begin in week 8, they are a suite of six competitions designed specifically for primary and secondary students.

ICAS are conducted annually in Australia and in over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Pacific countries, and America. ICAS Assessments are online assessments, designed to recognise and reward academic excellence. This is the first year that they have been upgraded to an online test platform.

The assessments are based on the curricula for the relevant year. Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated, and thorough level of learning.

Students who paid upfront to sit these tests earlier in the year will sit these various tests over the next 3 weeks.

The following table highlights the test windows for each of these tests.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase

Our School Buzz Phrase for weeks 7 and 8 is a Be Respectful Rule – “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths”

During transitions, students should keep noise to a minimum and model sensible behaviour.

It is an expectation that students line up and move around the school quietly and respectfully, keeping to the left and giving way to adults. This includes classrooms, line up areas, specialist lessons, returning from play times and entering and leaving Parade. By following this rule, we are being respectful to others and their learning.

Weather Watchers

The Preps have been busy this term observing and recording the weather as part of their Science learning. They have been investigating how the weather affects their choices about what to wear and the activities that they do. They’ve also thought about the impact the weather has on other living things like plants and animals.

It’s been lots of fun cloud watching, making rainmakers, creating weather collages, doing wind experiments, ice painting, playing dress ups and being the daily weather reporter.

Recently we’ve been enjoying experimenting with different movements and actions to represent a Seasons Dance.

HASS and Science Excursion

Year One’s are currently learning all about natural, managed and constructed environments, and changes within each environment that take a short or long time. This will allow us to engage readily in the curriculum at our upcoming excursion to Mary Cairncross Park on Thursday 12 September. Thank you to those who have returned forms and money so far. More information will be available closer to the date for volunteers who will be assisting on the excursion on the day.

Jo Dykes and Jenny Jenkinson

Year 2A & 2B

Year 2 classes have been very busy, and the term has gone by so quickly. We are already heading toward assessments and would like to remind parents that each day is important. Strong attendance will ensure your child is up to date with all learning, and not experiencing any anxiety about incomplete tasks.

Also, we are looking for parent representatives to help organise our class stalls for the upcoming Country Fair. Our parent reps would help with corresponding with other parents about what is happening with our stalls and organising volunteers to help run our stalls.

We need help! Please approach classroom teachers if you feel you would be interested. Any help would be wonderful.

Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain & Libby Ferguson

Year 3A & 3B

What a couple of busy weeks we have had! In the classroom we are in the middle of creating a multimodal text for English. The students have enjoyed engaging with the text as well as creating artwork for “Kumiko and the Dragon”. Students will now be creating their own story based around fear.

Please keep bringing in books and clothes for our second hand stall at the Country Fair.

Sporting School Program

For the last four weeks, on a Tuesday afternoon, you may have found some Maleny State School students fine tuning their Lawn Bowls skills at the neighbouring Maleny Bowls Club. This is part of the Sporting Schools Program, in which students can participate in sporting activities funded by the program. As you can see students had a BALL! Thanks to Graham and Brett for coaching the students, we’ve seen some great improvements.

Chappy News - Availability

As we all know it was Father’s Day on Sunday and I hope that all the Dad’s out there felt valued and appreciated on this special day. I was doing an activity last week with one of the grades and I had to record the student’s responses to a variety of questions being asked. One of them was, “My dad is more handsome than…” to which the student would tell me their answer. I laughed so much at some of their responses. One child looked at me very seriously and declared that her dad was as handsome as a rock. Another child said that her dad wasn’t fast at all but then decided that he was definitely faster than a sloth.

One of the joyous things about my job as a chaplain is spending time with children and their purity and ability to speak the truth. Children have so much to teach us IF we’re willing and open enough to hear them. Spending time with them and listening to whatever is on their mind is one of the most powerful ways to love a child. I have discovered that if you are willing to listen to a child tell you anything, they will be more inclined to come to you and tell you things when they’re really important, so be available for them. Show them, by your actions that you always have time to listen to them. Have a great week everyone.

On Sunday August 25th, Imogen represented Maleny State School at the Modern Language Teachers Association Language Speech Competition at the University of the Sunshine Coast. It was a very exciting day with 580 students from 43 schools, delivered speeches in 7 different languages. Although Imogen did not get a place, she did an incredible job in memorising her Japanese speech, delivering it in front of the judges and answering questions to them in Japanese. We are very proud of you and thank you again to Renee for ongoing support. Ms Emi
