Principal’s Report

School Opinion Surveys Due 23 August – Please Participate

It is always great to chat with parents and receive feedback about our school’s processes and the impact of our school on students and our community as a whole. More importantly we require this feedback from as many parents as possible to ensure we can continue to improve as a school allowing students to achieve better outcomes.

Hence it is essential that as many parents as possible respond to our parent surveys to ensure that the data we analyse is truly reflective of our entire school body. Survey information has already been sent home (blue slip with your log in and code details) however of the 310 surveys sent only around 28 surveys have been completed. We are hoping for a positive participation rate from our parent body to gather the views of many rather than a few. Staff and students from the upper years have also participated in their respective opinion surveys last week.

Intra House Spelling Competition

A big thank you to Brent Heiniger for coordinating this event and all staff that helped to differentiate for students and assisted on the day making things run like clockwork. All students in every age group were extremely engaged and thoroughly enjoyed their session. Students received their team medals on assembly last week with Waregna winning as the overall House Champion.

School Concert – Save the date - 10 September 2019

This year our School Concert will be held on Tuesday, 10 September commencing at 6:00pm in the hall. The tuckshop will be open from 5:15pm to 6:00pm and at interval. All year levels will be involved in presenting an item along with our Instrumental Band.

Grandparents’ and Parents’ Morning Tea

Each Monday Chappy Becky is organising a place for parents and grandparents to meet for a cuppa and a chat. The feedback from Chappy is that participants are loving the opportunity to have a place where they can talk about their experiences and connect with other people in a similar situation.

Well done Becky on this new initiative.

Maleny Prep 2020 Information Session

Parents and Carers are encouraged and invited to attend our 2020 Prep information session run by our current Prep teachers on Tuesday 3 September 5:30 pm at Goodstart Early Learning Centre Maleny. All parents are encouraged and welcome to attend regardless of if their children attend Goodstart or not.

Prep Enrolment Interviews

All Prep enrolment interviews for 2020 will be held in the third week of Term 4 on Wednesday 23 and Friday 25 October. Interviews are conducted with parents and their child and take 20 minutes. Interviews are essential allowing great relationships to be forged between our school and parents, they also assist us to ensure we collect the appropriate information to best support your child’s transition to Prep and allow us to design balanced Prep classes. Call Desley on 54998333 to book your interview now.

Father’s Day Stall before school

This year our Father’s Day Stall will be held in the Uniform shop area BEFORE school (8:15-8:45am Tuesday 27 August - Friday 30 August). It is hoped that parents may like to assist their students with their purchases. Assistance to serve at the stall is required and will be most appreciated. Just drop in and offer to help or contact Mandy McMahon. Gifts range from $2 - $10, most are $5. Students wishing to purchase gifts are asked to bring their money on one of these mornings to the Uniform shop area before school. Get in early as stocks may not last.

Country Fair – 18 October 2019 Second Friday back in Term 4

2019 Donations for Class Stalls

Donations for the following items can be dropped off to your classroom at any time.

This year as per last year we are asking all families to donate items where they are able, rather than just donating to your child’s class stall, you may contribute to any stall, as this has left us short of donations in the past. Each week we will highlight/advertise a particular item that we need donations for, however please send in any donations of the below items at any time. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Australian Government Contribution for students travelling to Canberra

Our Yr 6 students will be undertaking an education tour of the National Capital this week. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship Education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and has been already factored into the total cost of this excursion. We are extremely grateful for this rebate to assist families financially.

P&C Meeting

Please join us for our next P&C meeting on Wednesday, 11 September at 6:30pm. New faces always welcome. Our parent numbers need boosting as we have some fantastic parents working extremely hard but they are few in number and more support would be appreciated.

1-2-3 MAGIC Parenting Course

Understanding our own and our children’s Behaviour.

We would like to invite parents to attend an upcoming series of three workshops designed to help parents with behaviour management strategies. Deb Price, who is currently working as Engagement and Well-being Teacher across Hinterland Schools and Guidance Officer at Buderim Mountain State School will be sharing the 1-2-3 MAGIC Programme with parents. The workshops will include information on:

  • Understanding and dealing with difficult behaviour eg. arguing, fighting, tantrums
  • Encouraging good behaviour eg. going to bed, doing homework, eating
  • Strengthening your relationship with your child through the use of praise, active listening and shared fun.

The three sessions will be held at Mapleton State School within the school staffroom on Fridays, 18 and 25 October, and 1 November 2019. Each session will run 9:00am-12pm. Morning Tea to be supplied.

Participants will receive a workbook linked to the programme at no cost.

Please note that the sessions are for all parents, regardless of whether your child attends Mapleton State School or not. Arrangements will need to be made for the care of any non-school age child(ren). Parents who have babies or very young children who would like to attend and are unable to gain care are most welcomed to come along, however if your child becomes unsettled we understand that you may need to leave earlier.

Should you wish to attend please contact Mapleton State School by emailing or phoning the school office on Ph 5456 3333 or drop in personally to let office staff know you would like to attend.

Friends and family are welcomed.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

Spellbinder Intra School competition!

Last week was our annual ‘Spellbinder’ competition and it was wonderful to see our students working together as a team to spell the words in the various events.

Lots of children learn in different ways which is why teaching them means using a range of approaches. This will also help them when applying spelling because they will see the word in different contexts. Here are some strategies for spelling:

  • Listening for the sounds and breaking them down
  • Breaking a word into syllables
  • Using rhymes, mnemonics and songs to remember
  • Using visual approaches e.g. ‘word shape’, ‘bubble writing’
  • Being multi-sensory e.g. ‘word painting’
  • Using verbal and social e.g. ‘spelling tennis’
  • Kinaesthetic and physical e.g. ‘spell jump’

As well as engaging in all the fun activities suggested, it is still important to put the words into sentences for the child. This puts it into context and also gets them to apply the spelling within writing rather than a ‘list of words.’

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase

We are moving on with the Buzz Phrase - “Make Good Choices”. This will be our whole school focus for weeks 5 and 6.

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own behaviour. This means that they try their best, are always honest and follow the 4 Be Rules of their classroom and the school.

When students are making good choices, they are being positive role models for their peers. Positive role models are organised, on time, look after equipment and belongings, solve their own problems and care for others.

Exciting New Unit of Study

This term, our Yr 4’s are trialling a new technology unit designed by the teachers and Mr Greig. The students are investigating sustainable practices and we are about to create our own wicking beds in the garden area to grow vegetables in. Last week we conducted an experiment with food colouring and paper towel to observe the wicking process.

The assessment for this unit requires the students to develop a dipping stick to measure the water levels in our garden beds. We have been researching how wicking gardens beds are an efficient way to use water by minimising evaporation. The students worked cooperatively to put together their own class wicking bed. We used our own compost to the gardens. Next week we will be designing our dipping stick as an assessment piece and planting out our seedlings.

In English we have started writing historical recounts at the time of the First Fleet from the perspective of a convict child, a child seaman, a ship’s surgeon’s child or an Indigenous child from the Cadigal tribe living in the area. We have been exploring our senses to brainstorm what it might have been like at the time.

In HASS we have been looking at the continents and oceans in our world and looking at Africa and South America in particular. This week we are looking at scales and grid references and plotting where places are situated in the world.

Fun With Periscopes

In Science we have been learning about Light and its properties. Recently we have investigated how light is reflected and how we change the angle it is reflected with mirrors. To explore this further we made periscopes in groups and undertook some secret surveillance work around the school. Here are some of our groups spying on the goings on at Maleny State School.

Also we investigated all of the colours which make up the spectrum (Rainbow colours- ROYGBIV- Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo, Violet) through creating our own Newton’s Colour wheels. If we spun the wheels fast enough we could see all of the separate colours combine into one (a white light.)

War on Waste

Way ahead of our Target - $241 dollars after 8 weeks!

Last week, Chloe and Sebastian brought in 9 bags of plastic containers from their home to donate to our Garden Club. We are now at $241 after 8 weeks!

Thank you to parents who are helping to support our collection of 10 cent containers. We have been able to buy two IBC containers with the money raised for the year 4’s to create 4 wicking garden beds for their technology unit.

Many thanks to Mick Walsh for giving up his weekend to pick these containers up from Brisbane and for cutting and preparing the 4 beds for the Yr 4s. Last week students in the Garden Club planted new seedlings and mulched all the garden beds.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

Check Your Words

Our words are so powerful and they either have the ability to lift people up or tear people down. I read a quote the other day that said, “Children become who you say they are.” Everything in me screams that this is a true statement. As a parent I strive every day to speak with my children about the qualities that I have identified in them as their strengths. As I tuck them into bed at night I give thanks for having a daughter who is kind, compassionate, thoughtful and brave. I give thanks for having a son who is loving, courageous and can admit his mistakes. Seeing the power of my words to change my own children’s lives, I am even more mindful of what words come out of my mouth. I see every day my children becoming what I say they are. The opposite is clearly true. If a parent criticises and constantly highlights the negatives they see in their children, the child will only ever see their weaknesses. In bringing attention to an area that a child does need to improve upon, make sure to also acknowledge what they are doing right and use your words to build them up into confident and respectful people. This is also a wonderful opportunity to teach your children that they have the power to also change their classrooms and friendship circles. Empower your children with kindness and watch the positive difference they can make in the world around them. Have a great week.
