Principal’s Report

Parent School Opinion Survey- Please Participate We Need Your Views

Our annual school opinion survey will commence on Monday 29 July. Survey information will be sent home next Monday. It is essential that as many parents as possible respond to our surveys to ensure that the data we analyse is truly reflective of our entire school body. We look forward to a positive participation rate from our parent body. Staff and students from the upper years will also participate in their respective student opinion surveys. Our current 4 Year Plan concludes in 2020. This means that we will be reviewing all aspects of our school to set a new direction for the following 4 years. Opinion data in relation to our school will be one important source of information we use to guide our new areas of focus in the future.

Maleny High School Musical

This Thursday the whole school will be attending ‘Popstars’ the musical performed by the Maleny State High School. A number of our Yr 6 students will also be performing in this production. Please ensure you have returned your child’s permission slip to allow them to attend, along with gold coin for entry.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (Yrs P-6) are being held this week. If you need to change your appointment time please contact your child’s teacher or the office to rebook a different time as the online booking window is now closed.

Colour Fun Run

This year our P&C will be organizing a Colour Fun Run as a major fundraiser. It will be held on Tuesday 17 September in the afternoon. This is in the last week of Term 3.

This was a fantastic event last year and we are hoping families will again support it by seeking sponsors for their children. Details will be explained on assembly next Tuesday and a letter explaining all details will be sent home with students.

Father’s Day Stall

Our P&C is seeking donations for our Father’s Day Stall which will be held from Tuesday, 27 August to Friday, 30 August. Please drop them into your child’s classroom or to the office.

Regional Sports Results

Congratulations to all our students that competed last week at the Regional trials. There were some fantastic efforts from all students with many beating their personal best times and distances. The behaviour and sportsmanship shown by students was excellent.

A special congratulations to Sophia and Seanna.

Sophia won the 11 year girls 1500m race on Tuesday and broke the regional record. She will now compete in the State Cross Country trials in Towoomba this week. Knowing Sophia’s work ethic in training and determination I am sure she will do very well at this next level.

Seanna did a PB in the 800m and jumped 15 cm more than her PB in Long Jump. Seanna has qualified for 4 events at the State Championships.

National Swimming Championships

Seanna, in addition to her feats in track and field, flies out to Melbourne for the Australian School Swimming Championships next Thursday. This is an awesome effort Seanna. She is swimming in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and is in the A team for the 200m Medley relay swimming final leg doing freestyle. The A team will then compete in the freestyle 200m relay with Seanna swimming 2nd leg. This is an amazing effort and we wish Seanna all the best.

P&C Meeting Wednesday New faces Welcome

Please join us on Wednesday the 14 August at 6:30pm at our next P&C meeting. Our main task will be ensuring that our Country Fair and Colour Fun Run organisation is on track. We will require lots of parents to assist with a variety of jobs. Please let us know if you can assist so we can allocate you a task. This will help us distribute the workload evenly.

Country Fair - 18 October 2019 - Save the Date!!!

The Maleny State School Country Fair will be on again on Friday 18th October 2019 from 3.30-8pm. Planning is well underway from our P&C and dedicated volunteers to bring this wonderful event together. This is our major fundraiser for the school and a terrific family fun day. There will be rides, class stalls, show bags, music, entertainment, lots of delicious food and fireworks at 7.30pm!

Our popular Mega Raffle will be a feature on the night.

Donations for Country Fair Stalls

This year we will advertise each week for a different item that we would like families to donate for our Country Fair Stalls. Last year this brought in a better response rate and our class stalls were very successful. As a family you may pick and choose which items you donate. We would not expect that families donate each and every item. Donations required will include lucky dip prizes, soft cheeses and biscuits, NACHOS ingreidents, sauces, toys/clothing, Ice cream and toppings, cakes and slices, chocolates, soft drink and books. Keep an eye out for which donations are required.

Arrive on Time and Ready to Learn - Schools starts at 8:50

It is essential that students arrive at school on time and have time to organise themselves for the day. Students arriving late are required to obtain a late slip from the office before moving to class. When students arrive late, they more often than not, miss crucial information at the start of the day and often find it difficult to settle in quickly. With only one administration officer this also blocks our office delaying parents/clients who are required to wait for late students to be processed before they are served. This unnecessarily puts staff under presssure at one of the busiest times of the day.

Parrents can support students by:

  • Making sure your children get a good nights sleep
  • Give them a nutritious breakfast and food for lunch to fuel their brain
  • Teach them to organise and pack what they need for school
  • Have a regular morning routine and get up early enough to get dressed in full school uniform, have a good breakfast, brush hair, clean teeth, get organised and out the door

Winter Uniforms

Our kids look outstanding in their uniforms thank you.

Well done to parents who have purchased a school hat, black shoes, white socks and a school jacket or plain navy jumper for their children. It is getting cold and will continue to be that way for some time. I am proud of our school and my expectation is that parents show they are as well by ensuring their children wear the correct uniform every day. If finances are an issue please don’t hesitate to call me as I am very willing to assist you. See Desley at the front office who has a number of good quality secondhand jumpers students can borrow for free. The best way to stay warm on our coldest days is to wear layers. Jeans are not part of our uniform and should not be worn. Congratulations to the huge majority of parents that send their children to school every day regardless of the weather in the correct uniform. We very much appreciate this and see this as a sign of your support and thank you for the support that our staff give to your children every day.

Year 6 Relationships Education sessions

True Relationships and Productive Health - Sunshine Coast (formerly known as Family Planning Queensland) has been presenting sessions regarding Human Relationships Education (Sexuality Education) for our Year 6’s during the first three weeks of this term. A parent information session was held at the end of Term Two.

Have a Great Week. John

Top 5 Writing Tips to assist your child with writing at home:

Children have limitless imaginations and harnessing this to create extended pieces of creative writing needs guided input from both teachers and parents.

Being able to write well starts with exposure to stories – both being read to and through reading themselves. Drama and role play is an excellent way to engage children's thoughts and ideas and help them internalise a story. Once children have read a story several times get them to act out parts in character, make story maps and build story settings to bring a story to life. Below are several tips that will help children translate their creativity into the written word.

Get children to use their senses

Ask children to write a piece as if their audience were a visitor from another planet. Get them to use their senses - taste, touch, smell and sight - to describe their setting to a person who would have no concept of what Earth is like.

Children can also use a 'show don’t tell' techniques where they need to describe a time of day or type of person without stating the obvious. For example, if a character is poor they may say that they wear tatty clothing and live in a dilapidated house.

Encourage them to gather ideas from the world around them

Many children struggle to get off the starting block when it comes to creative ideas. Children may want to use one of their favourite toys or a memory of an event to form the basis of a story.

Taking children on an ideas hunt, where they walk around their local area and make notes of anything they find of interest, will also help them create a bank of creative writing ideas.

Get them write about what they know and love

If your child is a fan of horses, dinosaurs, motor bikes, or any other hobby, get them to include this interest in their stories.

You may want to organise a visit to a museum or a zoo and then get children to write an account of the day's events before turning it into a story.

Use drama to bring their ideas to life

As children act out a character in role, they generally add details, such as tone of voice and extended dialogue that they wouldn't have otherwise included in a simple writing exercise. Creating character masks may also help with this.

Encourage children to read from a wide variety of genres

Children who read a wide variety of genres from science fiction to comedy will have plenty of creative ideas to assist them.

They can then choose to emulate their favourite author or genre-style using the vocabulary and dramatic techniques they have gathered.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Buzz Phrase

Our school wide behaviour Buzz Phrase for the first two weeks of term 3 is “Play Fair”.

This means that students will be encouraged to play fairly and for fun, but not always to win. Learning will focus on cooperating with their friends, taking turns when playing games, and helping those that are still learning how to play a game. Students are expected to include others and speak appropriately to all. If they get frustrated in their games, they need to walk away and cool down or seek an adult’s assistance. It was great to see so many students playing fairly at Sports Day.

Year 4’s Celebrate NAIDOC week. The theme for this year was Voice, Treaty, Truth – Let's Work Together for a Shared Future)

As NAIDOC week was held during the school holidays, we chose to continue celebrations in our first week back. The students completed rotational activities where they learnt some traditional games, investigated symbols and created artwork that shared a message. We made a mural of hands and completed two large flags. In addition, we completed reading rotations and research on Indigenous Heroes.

End of TERM 2

From the last of Term 2. The Year 5 classes worked on the theme “Aussie BBQ” for our panel of the Knitfest on the front fence. Here’s our finished masterpiece (a little washed out after some heavy rain at the start of the holidays).

Start of TERM 3

The first week of term 3 has seen us starting our new units.

English- we will be studying different styles of poetry (poems, songs, anthems and odes) and then rewriting one as a narrative later in the term.

Maths- sees us studying number concepts, position and location plus financial concepts like budgets, income and expenditure.

Science- we investigate the properties of light through investigations involving reflection, mirrors and shadows.

$115 COLLECTED FROM 10C CONTAINERS!!!!!

The Garden Club has now raised $115 dollars from collecting our ten cent containers. Some of this money has been used to buy seedlings for our garden beds. After the disco students counted out the extra containers we had collected from our big orange bin. A reminder that the big orange bin is against the fence between the Prep and Year 1 buildings for parents to donate their 10 containers to help the Garden Club raise money for a greenhouse.

Kind Regards
Lou Walsh
