Principal’s Report
Wonderful Writer’s Week
In line with our school’s 2019 focus of ‘Writing’, last week we celebrated our second annual Writer’s Week. This included hosting local author Peter Carnavas on Thursday who presented workshops on writing and illustrating to all students. This was an incredibly inspiring and motivating day for all students and staff.
On Friday we hosted a Writer’s Forum which saw 40 educators in attendance from 17 different schools, including schools as far away as St Helens SS outside of Maryborough, Kilkivan and Minden SS in the Lockyer Valley. Thank you to all Maleny SS teachers who opened their classrooms to enable forum participants to view students writing, teacher resources and teaching pedagogies being used by staff.
This event was beautifully coordinated by Brent Heiniger our Literacy Coach with the support of Paula Heiniger our Deputy Principal. Teachers Mrs Walsh and Mrs Ferguson addressed the forum proudly on behalf of our teaching staff discussing their important role in our school’s writing journey as well as participating in a question / answer session. A huge thank you to all of our staff and students.
Our first ever Writer’s Trail was created with 12 local businesses displaying students writing from all year levels in their shop front for the week. Student’s writing included a QR Code that when scanned by a mobile phone allowed the voice of the student author to be heard explaining the writing techniques they had used to create their writing piece. Thank you to all students for their excellent writing samples.
We very much value community engagement with our school and I would like to thank all businesses that assisted us to positively promote the incredibly valuable skill of writing to our students. Please support our local businesses that have been so willing and cooperative in being a part of our 2019 Writer’s Trail.

Annual Report
Our 2018 Annual Report will be presented and discussed at our next P&C meeting. It is now available on our school web site or in hard copy from our front office.
The 2018 School Annual Report (SAR) provides our Maleny School Community with a summary of our achievements for the 2018 school year. The report includes information about:
- Our school’s progress towards its 2018 goals
- The key areas which have been identified for improvement in the 2019 school year
- Our school profile (characteristics of our student body, class sizes, school disciplinary absences, curriculum offerings, social climate, school satisfaction levels and parent involvement)
- Our staff profile (composition, qualifications, attendance, professional development and retention rates)
- Student performance (attendance and achievement)
Semester One School Reports
Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed this Wednesday. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week 2 of next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email shortly describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.
Chook Pen Update
Thank you to parents Zolton, David, Anna, Merrick and staff Mrs Jo Dykes and Kerry Sherwell for their hard work at our snake proofing working bee on Friday. We achieved a lot in a short time but also discovered there is plenty still to be done as time and weathering has taken its toll on all aspects of the area.
Under 8’s Day

3 of the many Wallies at Under 8’s Day making it easy for kids to find a staff member amongst the crowds. Mrs Bauer, Mr Byrne and Mrs Hicks.
Last Wednesday we celebrated Under 8’s day and our kids, loved it. Children freely moved from activity to activity of their preferred choice. In saying that one of the most popular activities was our emergency services vehicles that children were able to explore and did so for some time. A big thank you to the Queensland Fire and Rescue, Police and Rural Fire Brigade for their attendance and assistance on the day, you were certainly our children’s heroes. Students from Prep to year 2 participated in numerous activities which invigerated all of their senses and highlighted the theme of indigenous languages. The success of this day was a credit to coordinator Mandy Bauer and all of the staff involved. A special thanks to our Year 6 students and the Student Council who assisted with activities and supported younger students on the day.
Official Opening of Glenferna
Master of Ceremonies Chris Brooker assists the Govenor of Queensland to present Desley Malone a certificate of gratitude for her involvement as volunteer Restoration Manager.
Brian James President of Maleny Cultural and Historical Society, Desley Malone Glenferna Restoration Manager, The Governor of Queensland His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Andrew Powell State MP and Andrew Wallace Federal MP
Last Saturday I was honoured to attend the offical opening of ‘Glenferna’ at the Maleny Pioneer Village. Glenferna willl now be used as a School’s, Post Office and Telecommunication Museum to record the history of the 7 One Teacher Schools that were originally around the Maleny District . It will celebrate the rich history of ‘Glenferna’ which was also registered as a Receiving Office for mail from 1903 -1912. Over the years all but one of those 7 schools closed down, that being the Maleny Township School which is indeed our current school. This restoration is a real accomplishment by Cultural and Historical Society and one that will be of great historic and tourist value to our school and community.
I initially attended a meeting with Desley and Tom Malone, Stan Collard the President of the Historical Society at the time, and Andrew Powell in 2013 looking to acquire an old one teacher school building after hearing that the government was looking at closing several schools down. This never eventuated however by good fortune Tom Malone came across ‘Glenferna’ a farmhouse built by Edward T F Thynne in 1903 which was part of the first land selection in Maleny. The original selection of 790 acres was subdivided, Ted’s portion was 469 acres and his 3 sisters bought 320 acres. Their mother was Mary (Cairncross) Thynne and part of the sisters’ portion is now Mary Cairncross Park.
Our school has donated an old wooden school desk and bench seat to assist the setting up of the old school room. Teachers Trish Mckay and Lou Walsh have also assisted in setting up the History of Education Room display with an impressive timeline depicting the history of education in our community over the last 100 years. Well done Trish and Lou.
I congratulate Desley Malone past student and teacher at our school for her vision and determination to initiate and see this project through to completion, it is an amazing story and fantastic achievement. Desley is still looking to complete the inside of the museum and would welcome any funds or donations of historical items.
Attendance – Make Every Day in the Last Week Count
I have been very impressed with our student attendance this term so far. It is important that students attend school every day including the last week of school. I look forward to seeing every student every day this week.
Book Fair
Thank you to all who supported our Book Fair this week. The school will receive 33% of all purchases made back in the form of new books. Well done Adrian Greig for excellent coordination of this event along with Miss Shelly.

Winter Uniform
Our coldest weeks this year will come in Term Three please purchase a school jumper available from the uniform shop (or a warm plain navy jumper without logos, stripes etc., grey, black or maroon jumpers and denim jeans are not acceptable) if your child doesn’t have the correct winter uniform.
Keeping our school safe
Please keep an eye on our school over the holidays and report any suspicious activity that you may notice as unusual. It is a credit to our community that we thankfully have not experienced any of the vandalism etc. that many other schools do struggle with. This being said we realise that we must all continue to be observant and play our part collectively to ensure that this continues. A big bonus for us is that parents do not allow their children to come to the school over the weekend/ holiday period and know where children are at all times. Our local police also do a wonderful job and regularly patrol our school out of hours, I very much appreciate their continued efforts.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday, I look forward to catching up in Term Three. Thanks for a great Term and your continued support.
School Resumes on Monday 15 July.
Have a Great safe and enjoyable Holiday Break
John
From the Deputy Principal
Two Ideas for the Holidays!
Writing Idea: Children often get the urge to write stories in their spare time. Encouraging children to write a story of their very own can give them an enormous confidence boost, as well as help them consolidate their literacy learning by putting their phonics, grammar and reading skills into practice.
Folding or stapling some scrap sheets of paper together can be the start of a short story or chapter book that they then illustrate. Children may also take holiday snaps and write the captions for these or use these in a story sequence, putting themselves as the central character in their story.
The best way to support such ‘free’ writing is to not edit, unless they ask you to, but to – let them use their imagination and creativity when it comes to author’s craft, style and presentation, and make sure you show how much you value the end product by keeping it to read again with the other books in your house.
Reading Idea: often with the hustle and bustle of the term we don’t get the time to read as much as we like. Take the time these holidays to:
- Read to or with your children
- Take the time to read yourself, as you modelling reading is the first step in your children wanting to read and becoming a proficient reader
The main purpose of reading is to read for enjoyment, and holiday time is a perfect opportunity for you and your children to do this. The long term benefits are far reaching, both socially, emotionally and academically.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
Our school’s current 4Be Focus Rule is:
Our School Buzz Phrase for Weeks 7 and 8 is “Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn”.
This means:
- I use whole body listening
- I listen without interrupting
- I raise my hand if I have a question or don’t understand, but I wait until the person speaking has finished
PBL Team
Prep A & Prep B
Last week we celebrated 90 days of learning at Prep. Zero the Hero came to visit and brought with him a puzzle for us to unjumble and sequence. The children have been enjoying the exciting activities Zero sends when we reach a zero number of days at Prep. We are starting to plan a celebration for early next term when we reach 100 days of attending Prep.
We all enjoyed the special author’s visit for Writers Week last week. Local author, Peter Carnavas had the audience captivated with his delightful illustrations and entertaining stories. It inspired the children’s writing and illustrating back in the classroom about a penguin. We look forward to reading many of his books at Prep.
The Preppies enjoyed mixing with their older peers and friends on Under 8’s Day. The sun was shining, the activities were fun and there was much laughter and enjoyment.
Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. The Prep Team.
Mandy Bauer (Prep A) & Lindy Hicks (Prep B)
Year 1A & 1B
Year One has enjoyed a very busy few weeks, with the celebration of Under 8’s day as well as Athletics day, Writers Trail and finishing off all assessment for report cards with Positive Behaviour for Learning Rewards day coming up on Wednesday. We are now counting down the days until we have our 100 day party, which will start term 3 off with a bang! In maths we will be focussing on counting to and from 100 in 2s, 5, 10s. Number under pins all knowledge in future maths and counting is a very important skill to learn. If you get any chance to brush up on some fun counting with your child over the holidays (even it if is counting train carriages as you drive past) please don’t let the opportunity pass you by! The Year Ones are almost half way to Year Two….. have a safe and happy holiday and we will see you again in term 3!
Jo Dykes and Jenny Jenkinson
Year 2A & 2B
It’s hard to believe but, it is so close to the end of our second term and first semester, meaning of course that we are half way through the school year! Where has the time gone? Since our last newsletter, we have had our Junior Sports Day and very recently Under 8’s Day, which was an amazing event that all the students who attended have been talking about. Noticeably on Thursday, some students were sporting some impressive bling from a beading activity. They were also very pleased and proud to collect a number of other creations from the day, which the wonderful teachers who organised those activities sent on to each class. So thank you to them. Year 2 also attended a very special talk from a visiting author, Peter Carnavas, which was a very interactive and insightful experience into the ways of story writing and illustration. He astounded students with the demonstrations of his skills, and surely inspired many young minds.
Also coming up is Knitfest and Year two have been working on an amazing bush themed display, which could not have been possible without some very dedicated parent helpers. Students thoroughly enjoyed the process, and although it was fiddly and a bit of a tangle, they kept on creating. Please, take the time to go along and look at each year levels efforts.
This is our last newsletter for the term, so enjoy the remainder of the week, remember to book a time for a parent/teacher interview, and enjoy your holidays!
Sarsha Anthony, Hayley Chamberlain & Libby Ferguson
Year 3A & 3B
As we approach the end of the term students have been busy completing final assessments. They have written their own procedure based on the book Charlotte's Web. In Science we have created some amazing posters on understanding the rotation of the earth, moon and sun and also looking at how this affects night and day and shadow formation. We observed how a shadow changed throughout the day and how it grew longer and shorter depending on where the sun is positioned.
Feedback from our Sports Day events was fabulous, with many families commenting on the excellent organisation and high interest and involvement of every student in our school. Congratulations to everyone that participated.

CHAPPY NEWS - JOIN THE SYMPHONY
As I was sitting in my Chappy room the other day I could hear a music lesson taking place outside my window. The students were learning the recorder so you can imagine the kind of music that was “tickling” my ears. Any parent who has or has had a child learning the recorder will know how I was probably feeling, but times that by about 25 students! As I heard the teacher patiently showing a child how to press their finger on the hole and position their hands, I heard a very pleasant note being played.
It made me think about how out ‘of sync’ we can become in our own lives and families when everyone is playing a different tune and doing their own thing. It also made me think about the loveliness that comes when we work in harmony with each other and learn to join one another in achieving the same goals, or values, whether that is at your work place or within your own home. I just want to encourage you to find ways to bring beautiful sounding melodies into the world around you and find ways to work together that doesn’t just create noise, but creates music. So today, I challenge you to find ways to deliberately “make music” and not be satisfied with just making a noise. Have a great week everyone.
