Principal’s Report

Maleny SS District Athletics Champions

Congratulations to all students that participated in the District Athletics last Thursday and Friday. I have honestly never seen a team where every team member gave their absolute everything in every single event. Our student’s efforts were rewarded with Maleny State School bringing home all the silverware on offer. Maleny won the Schools Aggregate Trophy and the Overall Schools Points Champion Trophy which certainly made for a happy bus trip home. Age Champions included Matilda, Josh, Elijah and Sienna in the Multi Class. A huge thank you to Physical Education Teacher Mr Turner who has prepared students over a number of years for these events and has had to coordinate this year’s teams in a very short timeline. I would also like to acknowledge the support of all parents that were able to attend and help out along with Maleny Staff that assisted to train and coordinate events back at school and at the trials.

2019 Sunshine Coast Lego Robotics Competition

Seven Maleny State School teams competed over the weekend at the 2019 Sunshine Coast Robotics Competition. Some of the Roboclub team members entering robots and competing on the day were Ben K, Emily J, Aliea C, Luke D, Theo O, Eli J, Jasper J and William Mc. There was a huge field of 77 teams from schools from all over South East Queensland. We had some high hopes in the Sumo robotics competition which all of our teams entered. As always in the heat of 'battle' there are tough challenges to overcome. In this type of competition some of these are technical. We were very proud to see two Maleny teams make it into the top 16 teams round. One team even made it into the top 8 quarter finals. An excellent result to end a great day. A special mention to Ben K and Ben P whose robot 'Warmachine' had a 9-0 battle record until the finals were held. Very impressive! All students who managed to get to Noosaville and competed in the day long competition made Mr Greig & Mr Sanderson very proud. A huge thankyou from Mr Greig and Mr Sanderson to all the parents/ caregivers who drove their children all that way and stayed the day to support.

Under 8’s Day

Please come and celebrate Under 8’s Day with us next Wednesday 19 June from 9:00am – 10:30am. This year’s theme is celebrating the diversity of languages within the home, culture and community. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate in activities with their children. All of our Prep, Year 1 and 2 students will participate along with kindergarten children from C&K and Good Start centres. A number of our year 6 students will assist with activities and support students to ensure they have a successful and memorable Under 8’s Day.

2019 Bookfair - 17th-19th June

Our annual school Book Fair is open again on 17-19th June. It is a huge fund raiser for the school which helps the Innovation Centre purchase hundreds of books a year. Children will come through the Book Fair on Tuesday and browse the wonderful titles available and create wish lists of up to 5 books from the selection. These lists make their way home for parents/ guardians consideration. On the back of these forms will be instructions on how to purchase the books online. If choosing this method, write down the receipt number received and amount paid after online purchase and return the forms the next day to school so that the purchased books can be collected and taken home. Alternatively, the Book Fair will have open hours where the collection can be browsed by parents and children and purchases made directly via EFTPOS (debit or credit card). NB No CASH purchases. Sold out popular titles will be placed on backorder and delivered ASAP. The school Book Fair is held instead of a Book Club round.

Opening hours are:

Monday 3:00pm-4:00pm (Early Bird purchases),
Tuesday 3:00pm - 4:00pm and
Wednesday 8:15am - 10:30am (Extra hours due to Under 8s Day)

Regional Cross Country

Congratulations to all of our students that competed as members of the Glasshouse District Team in the Regional Cross Country.

Sophia pictured won the Under 11 Girls Regional Cross Country and will now compete in the Cross Country State Championships. Sophia’s rewards of focused daily training are certainly paying off with convincing wins in both the 800m and 1500m at last week’s District Athletics.

Hinterland Combined Band Workshop

Students from Conondale, Montville and Peachester will join with Maleny students next Wednesday 19 June to expand their knowledge and skills in a whole day Instrumental Band Workshop in our hall. The purpose of the day is to prepare the band for the upcoming performance at the 2019 Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.

Students will be given the opportunity to work with our very talented Guest Conductor, Mr Greg Spence, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Trumpeter.

Not only is Greg Spence one of Australia’s leading commercial trumpet performers, he is the Author of “Mystery to Mastery”, a revolutionary method book with online lessons.

Semester One School Reports

Student reports for Semester One are currently being prepared by teachers and will be distributed in the last week of Term. Remember a ‘C’ rating means your child is achieving the outcomes expected at their year level. The biggest percentage of students will achieve this result. Please read the standards on the front of your child’s report card for a better understanding of what a specific grade means. Please don’t hesitate to clarify any questions you may have with your child’s teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews (years P-6) will be held in week 2 of next Term. If you need to meet earlier please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a meeting. Parents will be sent an email shortly describing the Online Booking tool we use to coordinate our interviews. If you do not have internet access please call the office or see your child’s classroom teacher to assist you make this booking.

Maleny Show Display

Well done to the Maleny Show Committee for once again hosting a tremendous Show for our community. The theme of this year’s show was ‘Farming - Past, Present and Future’. I was impressed that every year level contributed in some way to this surrounding theme. Thank you to all students and staff that contributed and assisted to set up this display.

Earn and Learn Woolworths Promotion

Thank you to everyone for supporting this initiative. Please keep the stickers coming in. For every $10 spent at Woolworths a sticker is issued to customers. If you shop at Woolworths please place your stickers in the Maleny State School box at the store or hand them in at the school office.

Chicken Coup Working Bee

We want to get our Chicken Coup up and running for Term 3. First we need to snake proof the pen with wire. If you have some skills/resources (builders staple gun) in this area and can assist on Friday 21 June in the afternoon (we can change times to suit you, this is just a starting point) please contact Jo Dykes in year 1 or John Byrne through the office.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

From the Deputy Principal

Please help out…

We have a number of businesses that are close to our school, please be mindful when walking to and from school that these businesses are not affected by our actions ie. parking in the wrong spots that may impede entry to these businesses, walking through garden beds, or interfering with shop displays or signage.

WRITER’S WEEK

Coming up next week (June 17-21) our school will be celebrating our own Writer’s Week. This is seen as an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work that our students and staff have been creating and a chance to reflect on how far that we have come as a school in this area. Here are some of the activities that have organised for the week:

  • Writer’s Trail – A selection of student’s writing pieces will be displayed in participating stores throughout the town for the entire week. This will give not only our school community but our whole community of Maleny an opportunity to view our children’s creative work. A flyer next week informing parents of where you can find the displays will be distributed.
  • Author’s Visit – The award winning local author, Peter Carnavas, will be visiting our school on Thursday, June 20. He will present three engaging workshops on writing and illustrating to all of our year levels. Payment of $2.00 each is required by June 13 as mentioned in a note that went out a few weeks ago.
  • Round-up Writer’s Revisit – Some of our local writers who donated their services last year are at it again this year, as they visit our classrooms and share the children’s writing.
  • Lunch Time Workshops – A couple of workshops will be operating at lunch times in our library. These will be fun activities to spark different writing interests.
  • Writing Forum – On Friday (June 21) various schools throughout the wider area will come and hear what we have been developing in relation to writing over the past few years. It is an opportunity for us to share and grow as our visitors will also be asked to share their thoughts and ideas on writing in education.
  • Class Writing Displays – During this week all classes have been asked to display the student’s writing. Parents are invited to come and visit the classrooms during the week to view the student’s writing.

PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)

Our school’s current 4Be Focus Rule is:

Our School Buzz Phrase for Weeks 7 and 8 is “Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn”.

This means:

  • I use whole body listening
  • I listen without interrupting
  • I raise my hand if I have a question or don’t understand, but I wait until the person speaking has finished

LEARNING WAYS TO PROTECT LOCAL ENDANGERED SPECIES
From the Unusual to the Very Beautiful!

The students have all been busy investigating endangered species in our local area and they were lucky to have Lisa Ryan, a guest speaker from Mary Cairncross Park come and talk about the reserve. She explained about the threats to the different species and ways we can help to ensure their survival.

We all know that Mary Cairncross Park is a very special place and that 400 visitors come every day to enjoy this rainforest paradise. In Science, we have been looking at lifecycles and have been watching eggs hatch and seeing how the caterpillars grow and eat the cottonbush leaves. It has been fascinating to observe the different stages. We are eagerly waiting for the Monach butterflies to leave their chrysalis.

In Media Arts the children have been focusing on persuasive advertising and are in the process of creating a PowerPoint presentation to convince our Local Council to create more wildlife corridors for our endangered species to flourish. We have been looking at the way powerful words (modality words) and camera angles and music can influence the viewer’s mood.

A Hectic Term

This term has really flown by. So far we have had Sports Day, NAPLAN and Interschool Sports and now we are really busy completing our units.

After finishing our NAPLAN testing we celebrated by creating and launching our Science Space Landers. Here are a few action shots.

We are currently busy completing our assessment for all of our Learning Areas. In English we have been writing news articles with a bias either towards sharks being kept in aquariums or allowed to be free. Here are some of our best sentences:

“So keeping sharks in captivity will give them a death sentence.” (Mackenzie)

“Sure scientists can study them, but sharks lose their natural instincts. So then the scientist’s notes would be false, especially if you were comparing them to a shark who is free.” (Polly)

For HASS we have each created a powerpoint about a natural disaster. This included: looking at some of Australia’s worst floods and cyclones; sharing how to be prepared before disasters and what to do during and after disasters. Here are a few slides from some of our presentations.

War on Waste

Buddy Bench Arrives!!!

This week Sandie Johnston from the Sunshine Coast Council delivered the buddy bench from the 2018 War on Waste Film Competition. Many thanks to Will, Cam, Jesse, Indi, Zac and Ranger for their outstanding effort.

The students at Maleny have all embraced the collection of our 10 Cent Containers in our eating areas. It has been a great start with a total of $31.90 being raised in 9 days. Our goal is to make $500 by the end of the year. This money will help buy seedlings, mulch and netting for the garden beds. Many thanks to Kerry Lees for taking out bags down to the Caloundra Recycling Depot.

Kind Regards

HUMILITY

I’ve been thinking about how powerful saying sorry can be. Making amends with people we have hurt is a powerful starting place to redeem a broken relationship. I’ve discovered how quickly children will forgive an offence if the person apologising chooses to humble themselves and admit the wrong. There have been many times that I have had to say I was sorry to my children and admit that I hadn’t handled a situation as productively as I could have. I recently recognised a hurt that I caused a person by my words and I knew that I needed to admit to them that I recognised my words had hurt them and say I was sorry. The look on their face was priceless as I spoke and admitted my fault AND they were so happy to forgive me and enter once again into that trusting relationship. The truth is that none of us are perfect and we are all going to hurt someone on days we are wearing our “cranky pants.” So learning to choose humility and honesty are perfect attitudes to have if you desire to redeem a relationship and even if you don’t it’s still the right thing to do.

There is a saying that goes like this, “Humility is the Mother of Giants”. People respect those who are willing to admit fault and own their own behaviour. Humility exalts a person whereas pride comes before a fall. So choose humility every time and tell Pride to be quiet. Always say ‘YES’ to humility.
