Writing (Grammar)
Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday to all of our Maleny Mothers and those of you who also fulfil this incredible role of nurturing and caring for our children. I salute you and thank you for the valuable part you play in our children’s lives.
Also a big thank you to Super Mum Mandy McMahon for coordinating our Mother’s Day stall and to all parents that were able to assist through the week. Once again this year’s stall was very successful with some quality gifts (thank you parents for all donations, these were greatly appreciated). The real joy for me is watching children carefully choose a present that they just know mum will love.

Earn and Learn Woolworths Promotion
Our school is once again participating in this year’s Earn and Learn Woolworth’s promotion. For every $10 spent at Woolworths a sticker is issued to customers. If you shop at Woolworths please place your stickers in the Maleny State School box or hand them in at the school office. We hope to gain over $600 in school resources from this initiative.
NAPLAN
Students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 right across Australia will participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) this Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May. Students will take the 2019 NAPLAN tests with Friday being a make-up day. Students will participate in 2 tests on Tuesday (40 minutes duration) and one test on Wednesday and Thursday (45 and 50 minutes duration). Queensland student participation rate has been falling since being the highest in the country in 2008 to the lowest in recent years. The higher the participation rate the more valid the results will be. I strongly encourage our children to participate in NAPLAN tests and to try their best.
NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children at a point in time. Our students are well prepared by our staff for these tests and as a result we don’t see any of the stress and anxiety sometimes reported in the media. The diagnostic information that these tests provide on individual students allows us to plan future learning episodes for individual students to support areas of strength and challenge. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to:
http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carersupport.html
How you can help your child do their best the night before and day of NAPLAN.
- Ensure children go to bed early each night in the lead up.
- Give them a healthy breakfast.
- Arriving early to school will ensure students are organised and well settled before tests commence, (this applies every day)
- Don’t make a big deal of NAPLAN or put pressure on students to perform well. Just tell them to try their best.
We all get a little nervous before an exam. This feeling is normal and the adrenalin we feel can actually help us to focus our thoughts just like a sports player before a game or artist before a concert. Our teachers work hard to ensure students are prepared for tests and do it in a manner that ensures student’s anxiety levels are not too high. Our school does not believe in teaching to the test, we believe by using good pedagogy and teaching the Australian Curriculum students will have the skills to do well in NAPLAN which is based on the Australian Curriculum.

P&C Rewards Chappy
Chappy Becky does an amazing job each day at school playing games at lunch times with different year levels in the hall. Children often win prizes or are rewarded by Becky for their past actions portraying our school values and rules. A big thank you to our P&C who have just topped up Becky’s prize box as you can see below.
Next P&C Meeting Wed, June 12 @ 6:30pm
If you would like to help out at this year’s Country Fair or have some new ideas please come along as we are always looking for, and welcoming, new faces.
Proud and Proper
I love our school and I am certainly proud of the way our students look. I can’t thank parents enough for the support they have shown at dressing students in the correct black shoes and white socks.
Cold Weather Coming – Order a new jumper now to ensure you don’t miss out.
It is great to see most students wearing either a school jumper or a PLAIN NAVY jumper. Those that are not wearing the correct jumper are asked to put their jumper in their bag and borrow a second-hand jumper from the office. Many children do and some decide they are not cold and just put it in their bag.
Under 8’s Day

Year 2 – The Bush
Year 3 – Indigenous Australians
Year 4 – Plants/Floral

If you see some cheap felt/wool or have some that you don’t require please drop it in to the office. If you would like to help we would be very appreciative even if it is attaching complete items on to the hessian, many hands make light work here.

Contact Details – Do we have your most up to date contact details?
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on 5499 8333 so we can update our records. PBL (Positive Behaviour Learning)
What a fantastic start to Term 2 we've had with whole school behaviour. Students are to be congratulated for their efforts to be the best that they can be and follow our school Four Be rules. The PBL Team is impressed by current data that shows a reduced number of behaviour incidences in and out of the classroom.
Our school’s current 4Be Focus Rule is:
Our Be a Learner Buzz phrase for weeks three and four for this term is “I Can, I Will, I’ll Have a Go.” Students are encouraged to approach their work with a positive “I Can” attitude and to feel proud in finishing work to their best efforts. Having the right mindset can go a long way in achieving learning goals throughout schooling.
This means:
- I have a positive attitude towards learning.
- I give my best effort when working.
- I always have a go to begin and finish any work I may need to do in the classroom.
PBL Team
Year 4 A, 4B & 4C
NEWS from the Year Four Cohort!
The Year 4’s are learning about life cycles and are conducting a number of experiments with seeds. We have made our own grassheads and we are enjoying watching their hair grow.
In maths we have been looking at number lines and investigating place value and equivalent fractions.
In English we have been looking at Dreaming Stories and learning about the significance of the yarning circle. Our Indigenous people have used yarning circles for thousands of years to talk about important things in a respectful way.
In HASS we have been learning about life in England before the First Fleet. We know that the Industrial revolution created big changes where things were no longer made by hand and instead machines were used. We discovered that life was very hard and people from the country moved to the cities in search of work. The overcrowding and lack of work created hardship and many people were destined to become convicts. We have been discussing the cause and effect of changes over time and have been completing flowcharts to show this.

Term 2
Term 2 will be very busy. We’ve already had 2 short weeks and we still have all of our work to complete for Semester 1 report cards, NAPLAN (in Week 4), Sports Day and some students will also be involved in Friday afternoon Sports- Netball or Soccer for the next couple of weeks.
In the first few weeks of this term we have started researching our solar system and are especially looking forward to making and testing our Space Landers in week 4. The Space Landers will be a handmade container/box/covering designed to protect a raw egg from breaking when dropped from the balconies outside our rooms. Stay tuned for photos of our test landings. Also we have started our next HASS unit where we will investigate town planning and zoning in our own world in Minecraft. A guest speaker from The Sunshine Coast Regional Council came to the school last week to talk to us about what the council does to ensure that residents are prepared for natural disasters like storms, bushfires and floods in our local area.

Year 6A & 6B
Welcome to Term 2!
It certainly has been a very busy start to the term. We began our week by being greeted with our new senior shirts! The students were very excited to see their arrival and couldn’t wait to try them on. The first few weeks have been very hectic and we are very busy completing multiple assessments. Students have been working hard on completing their travel brochures for English and are beginning to learn about Energy, Electricity and constructing a working circuit. Interschool netball and soccer are in full swing and we have been very fortunate in finally getting some fantastic weather to ensure the kids can get out and train. This weather has also enabled us to get out and do some practise towards the Senior Sport Carnival which is fast approaching.

NEWS FROM THE GARDEN CLUB
The Maleny Garden Club have been busy adding our nutritious compost to new garden beds and planting new seedlings. The snow peas that the prep classes planted are growing strong and the children are enjoying eating the produce. We have applied for a grant to set up a greenhouse and fix the chicken pen and are waiting with fingers crossed for a positive outcome. We are about to start collecting our 10 cent containers from tuckshop in our eating areas to subsidise our garden expenses.
This week we have planted potatoes, beetroot, rocket, strawberries, spring onions and white radish in our garden beds and we look forward to seeing new growth soon.
Kind Regards
Lou Walsh

THE POWER OF WORDS
I’ve been thinking lately about how powerful our words are. There’s a proverb that says our tongue has the power of life and death in it and although it is the smallest part of our body it can cause the greatest damage. Just as a rudder steers the direction of a ship, so too does the tongue.
As I reflect on the truth of this, I ask myself whether I have used my tongue to build up or tear down. Clearly we are all guilty of building and tearing down at some point in our lives, but as a general way of life, I want to think of myself as someone who builds other’s up. There are always opportunities to bless people with words of encouragement and I believe that this is a conscious choice we can make every day. If I am honest, there are plenty of times when I will THINK something positive about another person but then I don’t pass it on. I urge you to be a person who builds up and speaks out those positive thoughts that come to your mind. If you like an outfit that you see someone wearing – tell them! If you like a haircut or behaviour you see in someone – tell them. If you believe that your child’s teacher is doing an awesome job – TELL THEM! Be that person who speaks life today. Be bold and say it. I dare you.
Have a great week everyone.

P & C News
Term 2 already! The P&C met this week and had a full agenda, including reports on very successful fundraising last term through the Golf Day and Spartan events, and upcoming fund raising opportunities at the School on Election Day on Saturday 18 May and at Bunnings on Sunday 19 May. A call for volunteers to assist is out, so if you have a couple of hours and can cook a sausage, sell biscuits or manage soft drinks we do need more help. Please e-mail the P&C if you are available.
We also had a presentation on the Positive Behaviours program run for the whole school and the fantastic results that the evaluations are providing for this evidence-based program. The P&C has provided some funds this year to support this program through the provision of signage which will reinforce the positive behaviours message. Well done and thank you to teaching staff for consistently supporting the program and making the school a safe and positive learning environment.
Progress is being made on gathering proposals for the playground equipment being purchased for the 1-3 playground. The funding is coming from a combination of P&C and EQ regional funds, and will be a lasting benefit for the junior school – giving the students a creative and fun environment as well.
Many thanks to the parents who generously donated gifts and time to make this year’s Mother’s Day stall a success. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums who parent, teach, and support our kids at Maleny State School, and THANK YOU.
Merrick Ilett
President P&C
